In July, 5x15 is thrilled to welcome the highly acclaimed and best-selling authors Polly Morland and Rachel Clarke, for a vital conversation about medicine, the NHS and the fascinating story behind Morland's new book A FORTUNATE WOMAN: A Country Doctor's Story, a Sunday Times bestseller that was shortlisted for the 2022 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. Polly Morland was clearing her late mother's house when she found a battered paperback fallen behind the family bookshelf. Opening it, she was astonished to see reproduced in it an old photograph of the remote, wooded valley in which she lives. The book was A Fortunate Man, John Berger's classic 1967 account of a country doctor working in the same valley more than half a century earlier. This chance discovery led Morland to the remarkable doctor who serves that valley community today, a woman whose own medical vocation was inspired by reading the very same book as a teenager. A Fortunate Woman tells her compelling story, and how the tale of the old doctor has threaded through her own life in magical ways. Working within a community she loves, she is a rarity in contemporary medicine: a modern doctor who knows her patients inside out, the lives of this ancient, wild place entwined with her own. Praise for Polly Morland and A FORTUNATE WOMAN 'I was consoled & compelled by this book's steady gaze on healing & caring. The writing is beautiful.' - SARAH MOSS 'This book deepens our understanding of the life and thoughts of a modern doctor, and the modern NHS, and it expands movingly to chronicle a community and a landscape.' - KATHLEEN JAMIE, New Statesman 'The best book I've read about general practice for a long time. Astonishingly perceptive, it shows how a committed GP can keep human values alive in an increasingly impersonal NHS – and why we urgently need more like her.' - ROGER NEIGHBOUR, Past President, Royal College of General Practitioners Polly Morland is a writer and documentary maker. She worked for fifteen years in television, producing and directing documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4 and Discovery. She is a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines and is the Royal Literary Fund Fellow in the School of Journalism, Media & Culture at Cardiff University. She is the author of several books, including The Society of Timid Souls: Or, How to Be Brave, which won the Guardian First Book Award and was a Sunday Times Book of the Year. A Fortunate Woman was shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction in 2022. Before going to medical school, Dr Rachel Clarke was a television journalist and documentary maker. She now specialises in palliative medicine, caring deeply about helping patients live the end of their lives as fully and richly as possible - and in the power of human stories to build empathy and inspire change. Rachel is the author of three Sunday Times bestselling books. Breathtaking reveals what life was really like inside the NHS during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic last year. Dear Life, shortlisted for the 2020 Costa Biography Award and long-listed for the 2020 Baillie Gifford Prize, is based on her work in a hospice. It explores love, loss, grief, dying and what really matters at the end of life. Your Life in My Hands documents life as a junior doctor on the NHS frontline. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/malhete-podcast/message

The emergence of tuning to global shape properties of radial frequency patterns in the ventral visual pathway

Abstract: Radial frequency patterns - created by sinusoidal modulations of a circle's radius - are processed globally when radial frequency is low. These closed shapes therefore offer a useful way to interrogate the human visual system for global processing of curvature. Radial frequency patterns elicit greater responses than those to radial gratings in V4 and more anterior face selective regions of the ventral visual pathway. This is largely consistent with work on non-human primates showing curvature processing emerges in V4, but is evident also higher up the ventral visual stream. Rather than contrasting radial frequency patterns with other stimuli, we presented them at varied frequencies in a regimen that allowed tunings to radial frequency to be derived from 8 human participants (3 female). We found tuning to low radial frequency in lateral occipital areas and to some extent in V4. In a control experiment we added a high frequency ripple to the stimuli disrupting the local contour. Low frequency tuning to these stimuli remained in the ventral visual stream underscoring its role in global processing of shape curvature. We then used representational similarity analysis to show that in lateral occipital areas the neural representation was related to stimulus similarity, when it was computed with a model that captured how stimuli are perceived. We show therefore that global processing of shape curvature emerges in the ventral visual stream as early as V4, but is found more strongly in lateral occipital regions, which exhibit responses and representations that relate well to perception.

We start with two firm favourites. Frankie Froba- Love song in 32 bars and Teresa Brewer- Wang, Wang Blues. Then we go west- sort of! Bradley Kincaid with The Miners Song. Two cowboy songs. A traditional sentimental tale from Peg Morland with Cowboy Jack. Morland lost half a leg in an accident while working as a railway brakeman. A completely different cowboy from Leo Fuchs, a Yiddisha one. I love the flitting between English and Yiddish. I'm sure there are many 'in jokes' going on. The Sweet Boys give us two delightful pieces of nonsense. First- I give in so easily. Sang by Gale Ryan. Can find out nothing about her. Another familiar artist to F.S,  Roberto Inglez. Born in Elgin Scotland as Robert Ingles. He led the Savoy Hotel Orchestra in the late 40s and early 50s but then left and moved to Chile. Where he continued in music career. We have Wedding Samba, Autumn Leaves and La Raspa. He lends his charming soft vocals to this last track. Two from the immensely entertaining Charlie Barnett. Big Maceo was a hugely influential blues pianist. He died young in the early 1950s. Two tracks from him and we will certainly be playing more in the future. We end, again, with western Swing and three great tracks from Jimmie Revard and his Oklahoma Playboys . A very popular Texan band in the mid, late 1930s.

The same forces that have shaped our past and present are shaping our future. Illustrating this through ten illuminating indicators, from the fertility rate in Singapore (one) to the median age in Catalonia (forty-three), Paul Morland shows how demography is both a powerful and an under-appreciated lens through which to view the global transformations that are currently underway. Tomorrow's People: The Future of Humanity in Ten Numbers (Picador, 2022) ranges from the countries of West Africa where the tendency towards large families is combining with falling infant mortality to create the greatest population explosion ever witnessed, to the countries of East Asia and Southern Europe where generations of low birth-rate and rising life expectancy are creating the oldest populations in history. Morland explores the geographical movements of peoples that are already under way – portents for still larger migrations ahead – which are radically changing the cultural, ethnic and religious composition of many societies across the globe, and in their turn creating political reaction that can be observed from Brexit to the rise of Donald Trump. Finally, he looks at the two underlying motors of change – remarkable rises in levels of education and burgeoning food production – which have made all these epochal developments possible. Finally, he looks at the two underlying motors of change – remarkable rises in levels of education and burgeoning food production – which have made all these epochal developments possible. Tomorrow's People provides a fascinating, illuminating and thought-provoking tour of an emerging new world. Nobody who wants to understand that world should be without it. The great forces of population change – the balance of births, deaths and migrations – have made the world what it is today. They have determined which countries are superpowers and which languish in relative obscurity, which economies top the international league tables and which are at best also-rans.
