Tonight we are discussing the  1989 British horror drama television film directed by Herbert Wise (most famous for I, Cladius, who worked solidly from 1957 to 2001 on everything from The Bill to 9 episodes of Tales of the Unexpected - including ‘The Landlady' which may well be the episode that Jon talked about remembering in episode 29) It  stars Adrian Rawlins (Harry Potters Dead Dad in the movies and Mr Pike in one episode of Neighbours),  Bernard Hepton (I, Claudius, Get Carter Tinker Tailor, Soldier Spy and Colditz), David Daker (93 episodes of Boon, 84 episodes of Z cars, Time Bandits and 2 Doctor Who stories: Irongron in The Time Warrior and Captain Rigg in Nightmare of Eden)  and Pauline Moran ( who was Miss Lemon in many episodes of Poirot and was bass player in the all female band ‘The She Trinity' who had a top 40 hit a cover of "He fought the law" in 1966.).  Hill's The Woman in Black had already been adapted into a beloved stage-play that went to become the West End's second longest running, non-musical after The Moustrap. More recently, the story was filmed by Hammer in 2012, staring Daniel Radcliff and going on to be the highest grossing British horror movie of all time. This teleplay is adapted from the 1983 novel of the same name by Susan Hill. It focuses on a young solicitor who is sent to a coastal English village to settle the estate of a reclusive widow, and finds the town haunted. The programme was produced by Central Independent Television for ITV, it was filmed at Stanlake Park in Berkshire, using the causeway to Osea Island, near Goldhanger in Essex, and the local salt marshes, whilst scenes to represent Crythin Gifford were filmed at the National Trust village of Lacock, near Chippenham, Wiltshire. and premiered on Christmas Eve 1989. It was an unexpected success, though author Susan Hill reportedly disagreed with some of the slight changes made in the adaptation By General Witchfinder's favourite Nigel Kneale, who you will all most like be aware of as the writer of the eerie and downright terrifying with his Quatermass tetralogy and, the classic ‘The Stone tape', The Road and Beasts, a six horror stories based around animals, for ITV. Keen (but formally untrained) royal anthropologists Eva and Allie have noticed that Queen Camilla seems to spend an awful lot of time at a mystery house called “Ray Mill” in Wiltshire, England. It turns out that Ray Mill is Camilla's private home, one she's hung onto from her pre-royal days. It's where she flees on weekends, holidays, and pretty much anytime she fancies a big ol' G&T in front of Coronation Street, her favorite soap, and a show which Charles reportedly loathes. In episode 4 of Windsors & Losers's “The Camilla Season,” Eva and Allie attempt to untangle Charles and Camilla's $25 billion dollar property empire and answer the simple question: “Why does the very married Queen hold onto her own house?”

The village of Lacock was once a quaint medieval community with cobbled streets,  cottages and coaching inns set around a tumbling stream. It all looks rather familiar because we've seen it in the cinema, movie theatre and TV screens – scenes from Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey and Harry Potter were all shot in Lacock. Music © Barney & Izzi Hardy

The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom

In this episode, we discuss the Oxford Effect. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:·     00:00 Intro·     2:13 Thank you listener for pointing out the easter egg that McGonagall used to play quidditch!·      3:14 What is the Oxford Effect? It is the melding of the Harry Potter books and the world. This is a rather difficult thing to understand and explain because it is two mediums that don't mix. Check out this video to get an idea of what I visualize (spoilers for Rings of Power). Watch the ball!·     8:38 Why is this called the Oxford Effect? Not only is Oxford an old Harry Potter looking place, but it is also a filming location and is a living example of Harry Potter. The filmmakers used Oxford to create Harry Potter.·     Lacock is another place where Harry Potter is present with the very old style of building and roads.·     13:14 What does the Oxford do for the story? It makes Harry Potter so much more alive. We can read about the Hogwarts express, watch Ron's hand against the window in the film, then go to the Hogwarts Express in the UK. ·     16:12 Why should it be pointed out? It is the entire reason for the continuation of Harry Potter. Without it, the fandom would be stagnant and dead. The Oxford Effect is what gives meaning to the Harry Potter world in the real world.·     20:11 This only grows over time. This is because the books and films don't change while the fandom does. The original story isn't racing to catch up. It rather acts as an anchor to hold and facilitate the growth for the Harry Potter universe. ·     22:24 Why do I love the Oxford Effect so much? It has allowed for the Harry Potter universe we know today. Without it, there wouldn't be any fan sites or spinoffs. There would be the books, and that's it.   Having anything you want to hear or say? Click here for a voice submission or here for text. We're making the most of the weather again and recording the podcast outside on location. As before you'll need to listen to find out where we were. As ever we start with a chat about what's been happening in the world of Hidden Wiltshire since the last podcast. And if it weren't for one or two of our wonderful contributors the answer would be “not much”. Elaine Perkins has “delivered” once again (this seems to be the word of the month at the moment)! She posted some great photos in the contributors' Facebook Group of a short evening walk she did taking in Old Sarum, Little Durnford and the Avon Trail. Elaine also ventured on an exploration of Amesbury and the surrounding area which we have now posted as a blog on the open Facebook site and the Hidden Wiltshire website. Amesbury may not be hidden but some of what Elaine found certainly was. You'll find a link to her blog below. Glyn managed to squeeze in one walk before he went on holiday, based around East and West Knoyle. There's a link to his blog and photos below. This is a beautiful part of Wiltshire and well worth a visit. Meanwhile Paul has once again deserted the county and undertaken walks in the New Forest (just over the Wiltshire border in Hampshire) and further afield on the stunning Dorset coast. But we can't talk about those! There have been a couple of Wiltshire Museum guided walks since the last podcast. A select few guests accompanied Glyn on a walk in the countryside around Castle Combe, an abbreviated version of the walk Paul did just after lockdown in July 2020. You'll find a link to Paul's walk below but Glyn managed to shorten this to a more manageable five miles. We've added a map of his walk to Paul's original blog. Glyn's article about Wiltshire's Blind Houses was featured in the August edition of Wiltshire Life. His original blog can be found below. Glyn also attracted a lot of attention on Twitter when he posted some aerial photographs of the parched landscape around Rybury Camp in Pewsey Vale. Local farmer (and constructor of long barrows) Tim Daw had noticed some interesting crop marks in his fields and invited Glyn to photograph them with his drone. You can see the photographs on both Hidden Wiltshire Facebook pages and on Glyn's Twitter feed. There appears to be a previously unknown enclosure and henge in the fields together with multiple possibly Iron Age storage pits. Whilst the hot dry weather creates many problems it does enable the land to reveal many of its hidden secrets. Finally in our review we wanted to mention a couple of Hidden Wiltshire followers. Firstly Bill Parncutt, who emailed us with some very kind comments about the podcast, and secondly Simon Lovett and his dad John for whom Simon bought a copy of our book as a birthday present. Paul delivered the book personally to John but stupidly didn't get the name of his lovely wife. But it was great to meet you Mrs Lovett! Before we moved onto the main subject of the podcast we had a chat about our location for the recording so do have a listen. The main subject in this episode was the walk Paul and his regular walking buddy Stu did in February 2022 starting in Lacock, their target being the Wilts & Berks Canal. Everyone knows Lacock so we didn't dwell on that for too long. But the canal is something that many don't know about. Completed in 1810 the canal stretches for 52 miles and its primary purpose was to carry coal. Ironically its heyday was the 1830s when it was used to carry the raw materials for the construction of the Great Western Railway which was to see its ultimate demise and abandonment in 1914. Then in 1977 a group of volunteers formed to begin the monumental task of restoring its entire length, a task that continues to this day under the auspices of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. If you want to support them in their endeavours, you'll find a link to their excellent website below. The rest of the walk takes in a number of fine Wiltshire houses including Ray Mill House, Pewsham House, Kilima Farm, Bowden Park and Bewley Court together with a rather pathetic looking Iron Age hillfort at Naish Hill and finally Lacock Abbey. In all the walk was about seven miles and you will find a link to Paul's blog with route map below. Then on to the wrap up: Steve Dixon's piece leading into our main subject is called “Dark and Lonely Water”.  A rather depressing piece it includes the voiceover from a public information film from 1973 about the dangers of playing near water, narrated by Donald Pleasence! As ever the piece in the introduction and at the end of the podcast is entitled “The Holloway”. The great news is that, whilst Steve has provided us with a sizable library of music, he has of late become enthused and promised us some new work. Finally, don't forget to check out the Hidden Wiltshire online shop on the website if you'd like to help us keep the lights on. A conversation between Charlie Moores and Anne, a spokesperson for the Wiltshire Hunt Saboteurs.Anne and Charlie have spoken before, in late December, shortly after a well-publicised attack on hunt protestors by followers of the notorious Avon Vale Hunt at their Boxing Day meet in the Wiltshire village of Lacock (link below). This time they're talking in late March, so towards the end of the so-called fox hunting season. It's been a tumultuous period for the various Wiltshire hunt packs and for the sabs and monitors who track their movements and are working to stop wildlife crimes taking place in the Wiltshire countryside. While the Avon Vale - and their support staff and protective shield of vehicles from Wiltshire Police - has now packed up until the fox cub hunting season starts in the autumn, the past six months have removed any doubt at all that illegal foxhunting is routine in Wiltshire – taking place right under the noses of local police, as well as under the noses of local Conservative MPs James Gray and Michelle Donelan, and the Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson who either haven't commented, commented that hunting is a legal activity, or suggested that had hunt sabs not been at Lacock at Boxing Day they would have been at home making bombs…And stepping into all of this – standing between the illegal hunts and our wildlife - are the Wiltshire Hunt Sabs. They affiliated with the HSA in their current form in time for the 2021 season – so how do they look back on their first full year of operation, and what are their plans for tackling this shameful situation in the years ahead…Wiltshire Hunt Saboteurs Twitter feedWiltshire Hunt Saboteurs  Facebook pageWiltshire Hunt Saboteurs Tip-off Line - 07562 628 187Donate to Wiltshire Hunt Saboteurs via PayPalOff the Leash Interview #14 Wiltshire Hunt Sabs Off the Leash Shortcast #76 Charlie Moores | The Avon Vale Hunt and a response to Wiltshire's PCC

Glyn has a new toy. A 360 degree camera which he assures us will be used for nothing more suspicious than making videos for the Hidden Wiltshire YouTube channel whilst out walking. So watch out for more news on this, and more of our ugly mugs. Meanwhile Paul is traumatised having sold all his camera gear without having the foresight to sort out a replacement kit. Unfortunately we've received another complaint from a Mr Jenkins about how long it takes us to get to the main subject of each podcast. In the last podcast it took us 29 minutes (apparently) to get to the point. We'll see if we can do better and maybe get through an entire episode without getting to the point. Some would argue we already do! Back on the subject of videos the countdown is on for the YouTube premier of Hidden Wiltshire's first serious crack at making a film. Our 40 minute film starring local historian David Carson is based around the villages of Alton Barnes and Alton Priors and the surrounding hills, taking us on a historical journey from Neolithic times up to the English Civil War and the Swing Riots of the 19th century. The film premiers at 7:30 pm on Tuesday 15 February and viewers can use the Chat function to talk to the Hidden Wiltshire team as we watch the video together. There's a link to the YouTube channel below. We posted a blog a few days ago about the walk Paul did based around Lacock and the Wilts & Berks Canal. For those who don't use Facebook it's a good idea to keep an eye on the Hidden Wiltshire website for regular blogs. You can subscribe to alerts which will notify you when new blogs are posted. There's a link to the Wilts & Berks Canal walk below. A quick mention also of the exhibition by aerial photographer David Abrams called Ancient Sites from the Air. David's incredibly detailed photographs include many in Wiltshire and can be seen at Salisbury Museum until Sunday 15 May. More details in the link below. Finally, before we get on to the main subject, we thank some of our lovely Facebook Group contributors for their posts about their walks and finds. A special mention goes to Elaine Perkins who's posted details and photos of some terrific walks recently. Just the sort of thing we're looking for. The main subject of this episode of the podcast is the walk Glyn and Paul did recently together with Hidden Wiltshire follower Bo Novak, around Old Winsley and Turleigh which took in the curiously named “The Elbow”. We recorded some audio as we walked so this podcast is a mixture of indoor and outdoor recording. We've mentioned this walk a few times but we were inspired to do it following correspondence with Sarah Lucas. Sarah moved away from Wiltshire some 30 years ago and listening to the podcast brings back memories of her youth. She lived with her family in Old Winsley and during the last war her mother worked as a nurse in what was a TB clinic and is now Avonpark Retirement Home. Her grandparents owned a house by the Kennet and Avon Canal called The Elbow. Sarah asked if we would do a walk and take some pictures in the area. We were happy to oblige. It's an area Glyn and Paul knew little about so it was great to have Bo along to act as our guide. You'll find a link to the blog about the walk below. Then on to the wrap up: Thanks as usual to Steve Dixon for the music. His piece leading into our main subject is called “Canopy”. As ever the piece in the introduction and at the end of the podcast is entitled “The Holloway”. Don't forget to check out the Hidden Wiltshire online shop on the website if you'd like to help us keep the lights on. Both Hidden Wiltshire books can be purchased there. Charlie Moores talks with Anne, a spokesperson for the Wiltshire Hunt Saboteurs. We're discussing fox hunting in Wiltshire and in particular the events that took place at a Boxing Day 'meet' of the notorious Avon Vale Hunt at Lacock, a  village in north Wiltshire almost entirely owned by the National Trust. As recorded on numerous body cams and uploaded to social media. the meet erupted into violence when hunt followers attacked protestors. In the aftermath of this violence, important questions are now being asked. Why, for instance, does the National Trust - one of the country's largest landowners which banned so-called trail hunting on its land in November this year - still allow meets to take place on its land?  Just how closely connected are the Hunt and the police officers who were on duty in Lacock that day? What are we supposed to make of the 'responses' to their constituents being attacked from local MPs Michelle Donelan and James Gray?  And what is it that keeps dedicated hunts sabs putting themselves on the front line...Wiltshire Hunt Sabs Twitter feed, Facebook page, and PayPal funding page Wiltshire Live Boxing Day hunt descends into violence amid protest in idyllic Wiltshire village

In this Off the Leash Podcast 2021 Year End Special, Dominic Dyer and Charlie Moores focus on the madness of foxhunting's Boxing Day 'meets' with reference to the disgraceful attacks by hunt followers on protestors in Lacock, a National Trust owned village in Wiltshire; the Faroes and the Grind; the use of Black Bear fur in military hats; and announce plans for an Operation Ark and Operation Magic Carpet New Year Special podcast.  Sandwiched inside all of that is animal sentience, moorlands, and much more. We also discuss a planned series of shortcasts on snares and snaring to support the recently re-launched Animal Aid petition to ban the use of free-running snares. We can't really make an episode of The Off the Leash Podcast without our Heroes and Villains, and in this one we slam the fossil fuel industry, the pesticide industry, the shooting industry,  foxhunting, and the so-called Countryside Alliance, and heap praise on everyone who helped get people (and animals) out of Afghanistan and the hunt sabs and monitors who put their bodies (and minds) on the line to protect wildlife and stop wildlife crime from taking place (heroes one and all). Finally, we thank everyone who has supported us in our first year online, and look forward to 2022.Wiltshire Live Boxing Day hunt descends into violence amid protest in idyllic Wiltshire villageWiltshire Hunt Sabs Twitter feed and PayPal funding pagePETA  Stop Bear Slaughter: PETA Unveils Faux-Fur Queen's Guard CapAnimal Aid page on snaresGovernment petition  Make the use of free-running snares illegal for trapping wildlife Government petition  Suspend trade agreement with Faroe Islands until all whale & dolphin hunts endOff the Leash podcast Interview #12 Crustacean Compassion | Decapod SentienceUnearthed  Europe and the UK's vast shipments of banned, bee-killing ‘neonics'

Today's guest is marathon swimmer and Pacific Open Water Swim Company Co-Owner and Boat Pilot - Sylvia Lacock. It was really interesting getting Sylvia's perspective on how marathon swimmers can be assisted in their epic adventures with the right Boat Pilot and the correct knowledge.  She leaves nothing to chance in her quest to give swimmers the best experience they can have.  From Alcatraz swims in San Francisco Bay to Lake Tahoe, Sylvia and her team offer their expertise.  We chatted about many aspects of what goes into being successful in a swim of this magnitude.  And she speaks from her own experience, as she has conquered the Catalina Channel! An epic swim in itself. If you have completed a marathon swim, or you are thinking of doing one, have a listen to this podcast.  I am sure you will benefit from Sylvia's advice.  Oh ...... and if you are ever in San Fran and wanting to tackle that  glistening bay under the Golden Gate Bridge, look up the Pacific Swim Company!Find Sylvia on socials at:Facebook:  Pacific Open Water Swim CompanyInsta: @pacificswimcoYou can find Torpedo Swimtalk on socials at:Facebook: Torpedo SwimtalkInsta: @torpedo_swimtalkWebsite: https://torpedoswimtalk.buzzsprout.com

The first of three episodes suggesting days out from Bath, this one takes you to Lacock and Corsham.  Hear about the widowed Mum of eight who founded Lacock Abbey in the 13th century, about the life of the nuns there and the village's role as a popular film set.  You've probably seen it in Pride and Prejudice, Wolf Hall or Harry Potter.  Secondly, off to Corsham, home of Corsham Court and of a 17th century almshouse and schoolroom.  Useful links https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock-abbey-fox-talbot-museum-and-villagehttp://www.corsham-court.co.ukhttps://www.citybreakspodcast.co.uk

I first met Sylvia Lacock in 2019 at the marina in Camp Richardson about an hour before I set off for my swim across the length of lake Tahoe. At the time I was impressed by her knowledge of the lake, thoroughness in covering safety, and professionalism as a pilot. Later I came to find out that Sylvia had a marathon swim story all her own - FINALLY I pinned her down to tell us all about it. In her own words: Adult-onset swimmer (33) now 50, with a few marathon swims completed, with the longest being a solo Catalina Channel in 2014. These days she spends more time at the helm as a USCG-licensed Captain and co-owner of Pacific Open Water Swim Co. with more than 2,000 hours per year piloting swimmers. Sylvia is currently working on her Master Captain's License and teaching others to become licensed. She is an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Golden Gate Flotilla and board member for the Northern California Open Water Swimming Association and Lake Tahoe Open Water Swimming Association. If you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.comStay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comJoin a supportive group of limit pushers at The Marathon Swimming Collective Music credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.

On this day in Tudor history, 23rd September 1571, after being taken ill while preaching a sermon in Lacock, Wiltshire, forty-nine-year-old John Jewel, Bishop of Salisbury, died at Monkton Farleigh Manor. He was laid to rest in Salisbury Cathedral. Not many people have heard of John Jewel, but he had an interesting life which spanned the reigns of King Henry VIII, Edward VI, Lady Jane Grey, Mary I and Elizabeth I - time of religious change. He was a clergyman, a Protestant exile, a theologian and bishop, and someone who spoke up for what he believed. Find out more about John Jewel, Bishop of Salisbury in Queen Elizabeth I's reign, in today's talk from Claire Ridgway, founder of the Tudor Society. You can see this podcast as a video at the following link:https://youtu.be/P5CBC_FLhP4 You can find Claire at:https://www.theanneboleynfiles.com https://www.tudorsociety.comhttps://www.facebook.com/theanneboleynfiles/https://www.facebook.com/tudorsociety/https://twitter.com/AnneBoleynFiles https://twitter.com/thetudorsociety https://www.instagram.com/tudor.society/ https://www.instagram.com/anneboleynfiles/
