The first noise we hear on Christine is a bird, chirping merrily away, like it's warming up its voice. It's apropos, considering the five tunes of naturalist meditation we're about to embark on. The EP from Portland-based songwriter Canary Room, aka Maddy Heide, is one of 2021's small joys. Heide's dexterous guitar work and fluttering voice puts her alongside the bare musings of Linda Perhacs or Sibylle Baier, but with her constant gestures at the natural world, with water springing forth in nearly every lyric, Christine is most at place not with other humans, but in nature. By the end of the EP, it becomes self evident that the tuning bird at the start was getting ready to duet with Heide. We chatted with Heide below:

On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's Jae Soto! Her debut album, “Leave the Light On,” has quickly become one of my favorites of 2024. It's special and I can't stop listening to it. After talking a bit about that, we get into the beauty of Linda Perhacs' music, Gal Costa's infectious sounds, making interplanetary friends with The Golden Girls, Jackie Wilson taking everyone beyond, ML Buch's unique palette, Deerhoof showing that anything is possible, and she even challenged the cosmos (and broke our internet connection!) with one of her picks. Nicole Dorsey and Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film Black Conflux, identity and uncertainty, empathy, attitude and ego, staying present, humility in asking good questions and why what you do next really matters.Watch the film now online.TrailerFind out more about Nicole and the film here.Synopsis:“The lives of an anxious teenage girl and a troubled man converge fatefully, in Nicole Dorsey's vivid debut exploring womanhood and toxic masculinity.“Black Conflux is a constant visual delight.” –Stephen Dalton, The Hollywood ReporterSet in suburban Newfoundland in 1987, Nicole Dorsey's debut feature is a dreamy account of two converging lives.Fifteen-year-old Jackie (Ella Ballentine) is navigating the tricky transition between vulnerable adolescence and impending adulthood. The film opens with Jackie auditioning for her school choir with a gorgeous rendition of “Hey, Who Really Cares?”, by obscure early-'70s psychedelic folk singer Linda Perhacs. It's a symbolic overture for a promising young woman from a broken home. Raised by her aunt and living under the cloud of all the disappointments endured by the women in her family, Jackie finds herself giving in to internal and external pressures — partying, skipping school, and hitchhiking — in search of her own identity. Her choices leave her speeding inevitably towards Dennis (Ryan McDonald), a socially inept loner with a volatile dark streak and delusional fantasies of adoring women at his beck and call.Black Conflux is a vibrant and stunning debut, one that shies away from conventions common to small-town coming-of-age stories. Dorsey exhibits an inspiring cinematic style — both assured and mature — as she reflects on the past and her own experience. Exploring womanhood, isolation, and toxic masculinity, Black Conflux is a bracingly relevant narrative for today.”With thanks to Ravi Srinivasan and TIFFAbout Nicole:Nicole Dorsey is a Canadian film director and screenwriter, whose debut feature film, Black Conflux, premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. The film was subsequently named to TIFF's annual year-end Canada's Top Ten list for 2019, and received a nomination for the John Dunning Best First Feature Award at the 8th Canadian Screen Awards in 2020.A native of Burlington, Ontario, she is a graduate of the film studies program at Ryerson University. Welcome to the latest episode of Retrosonic Podcast "Music From The Edge of the Universe: The 5 Billion In Diamonds Story". We welcome founder members, the legendary producer and drummer with Garbage Butch Vig, Bristol UK producer Andy Jenks and UK DJ James Grillo to hear the definitive and fascinating story on how this star-studded Transatlantic project came to fruition. The band's second LP "Divine Accidents" (Make Records) was our Album of The Year 2020 and it's another imaginary soundtrack to another imaginary film - a dazzling sonic and cinematic mix of Psych Rock and Folk sounds. It features the same stellar cast of collaborators including singers Ebbot Lundberg of The Soundtrack of Our Lives, David Schelzel of The Ocean Blue, Damian O'Neill of The Undertones, Sandra Dedrick of The Free Design, singer Helen White and musicians including the Bristol Wrecking Crew of Alex Lee, Sean Cook and Damon Reece on guitars, bass and drums. The album also features new sublime contributions from James Bagshaw of British psych rockers Temples and gorgeous vocals from Martin Barnard from Jenk’s '90's combo Alpha. In this thoroughly entertaining journey through 5 Billion In Diamonds musical universe, Butch, Andy and James play and talk us through some of the many and varied influences on the 5BiD sound including John Barry, Ramases, John Carpenter, Jimmie Spheeris, The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Michel Legrand, Linda Perhacs, Faust, Jeff Bridges and Richard Rodney Bennett. There's also a pick of their own music from both albums including the forthcoming single and a special sneak preview of the as yet unreleased vinyl-only bonus track featuring Jimmy Chamberlin from The Smashing Pumpkins. There's a comprehensive introduction to all of the 5BiD special guest musicians and vocalists and a Butch Vig edited medley of examples of their music. If all that is not enough, James tells us who is next on his special guest wish list, Andy plays a track from his new project Ree-Vo and Butch gives us an update on the new Garbage album. We even find out how TV presenter, naturalist and conservationist Chris Packham is involved with 5 Billion In Diamonds. L.A. Music Powerhouse, Fernando Perdomo, releases “The Golden Hour”, the perfect culmination of an amazing musical journey, evoking the past and inspiring the future. FOR RELEASE July 18, 2017 LOS ANGELES, CA - One of the most accomplished musicians on the LA scene, Fernando Perdomo has created an album that echoes the sound and feel of classic 70s singer-songwriter records. Recorded at Ardent Studios with Big Star archivist and engineer Adam Hill, “The Golden Hour” has captured the atmosphere, energy and melancholy mood of the classic Big Star albums recorded within those walls. The sound of "The Golden Hour" features the instruments and gear heard on classic albums by the iconic power pop group. The main electric guitar employed on the album is a vintage Gibson ES-330 that was owned by late Big Star founding member, Chris Bell. Perdomo also was afforded access to the original Mellotron used by Big Star, which is heard on every song on the record. From the opening piano-instrumental, "Sunset" to the inspirational closer, "Gold," vast emotional ground is covered on “The Golden Hour.” Many of the songs on the record clock in at less than 3 minutes long, wielding a measured sonic economy in a world full of overcooked pop. Only 36, Perdomo is a veteran sideman having backed up a who’s who of musical talent numbering Todd Rundgren, Jakob Dylan, Fiona Apple, Beck, Emitt Rhodes, Linda Perhacs, Cristian Castro, and more. Tallying years of experience has honed his consummate ability and robust creativity on a variety of instruments. In fact, Perdomo is a virtual one-man band on “The Golden Hour” providing all the vocals and instrumentation. Lyrically, Perdomo’s exquisitely crafted songs are infused with a finely nuanced mix of honesty and vulnerability. On "I Feel (Therefore I Am)", Perdomo sings "I've made mistakes; it can be great" which is quite the admission from a musician who sounds like a true perfectionist. On "Love Loss Repeat," he intones, "Nothing lasts forever…especially love”. Perdomo wrote every song on the record independently, save for "Look At The Moon," which is a co-write between Perdomo and Jordan Zevon, son of Warren Zevon, who was inspired to write the instrumental for a bridge while watching Perdomo play his original version of the song on Facebook Live. While in Memphis, Perdomo wrote the lyrics for the bridge resulting in the final version of “Look At The Moon”, an honest love song about venturing out with the one you love on a moonlit night. Laying down the foundation of the record at Ardent Studios, Perdomo put the finishing touches on the record at his own Reseda Ranch Studios. The album was mixed and mastered by Grammy-award-winning engineer, Zach Ziskin. “The Golden Hour” features a gorgeous album cover image by Derek Cintron. Shot before the first note of the album was recorded, the evocative cover inspired the tone for the music that followed, and the visuals truly have captured the feel of the record. The Golden Hour is here…Perfect Light, Perfect Love…Enjoy!

I'm Bored (Hat & Beard Press) Jess Rotter: I'm Bored is a Gary-Larson-meets-The Muppets variety show, a terrific trip composed of drawings filled with recurring characters--ranging from walruses to wizards to life warriors, who are all, like the rest of us, seeking their daily salvation. A wizard paddles on a lonely sea, his flag proclaiming "I'm trying." An ostrich hitchhikes in the desert, holding up a sign with her destination--"Bliss." A walrus wearing an AC/DC shirt looks mellowly at the viewer underneath the refrain "I'm bored." Part art book, part comic book compilation, and partly a skeptical but loving take on those Successories motivational posters for the office, this book (designed by the artist and with a foreword by Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte) features the whimsical, wonderfully whacked-out work of artist and illustrator Jess Rotter. Informed by a deep knowledge and love for the world of 1970s rock 'n' roll, the work of Jess Rotter was inspired by her father's vinyl covers and comic books growing up. "Part Peter Max, part Fritz the cat" (as Rotter described an early aesthetic influence), Rotter's illustrations have appeared on everything from public murals to album covers (to name a few: Best Coast, Linda Perhacs, Wooden Shjips, Country Funk Volumes I & II and This Record Belongs To), and on projects for clients including MTV, Converse, Target, Red Bull, Indiewire and Lena Dunham's Lenny Letter. Her T-shirt label, Rotter and Friends (launched in 2006) resulted in collaborative capsule collections for The Gap and Urban Outfitters, and official band merchandising for acts such as the Grateful Dead, Sly Stone, Rodriguez, Big Star, Kurt Vile and more.

This edition of the Talkhouse Music Podcast features two of the more acclaimed new singer-songwriters of 2015: Jessica Pratt and Tobias Jesso, Jr. Both musicians have deep roots in the sounds of the '70s, but two very different sides of the '70s. Jesso's piano-driven debut album Goon evokes superstar '70s singer-songwriters like John Lennon, Carole King, Harry Nilsson and Elton John. But Pratt's latest album On Your Own Love Again channels a very different, much more obscure side of the Me Decade: psychedelic folk from brilliant musicians such as Linda Perhacs and Vashti Bunyan. We put these two together backstage at this summer's Pitchfork Music Festival and they covered a wide range of topics: the recent Brian Wilson bio-pic, the difference between playing solo and with a band, dealing with stage nerves and insecurity, how malfunctioning equipment can be a blessing, the interview tricks journalists try to pull on them and the wonderfulness of the Train song "Drops of Jupiter." Jesso reveals his tricks for playing as few songs as possible in his set. Pratt recounts a synopsis of the film she has seen more times than any other: The Brave Little Toaster (1987), which prompts our guests to wrestle with a most vexing question: "How weird is it for a blanket to be chasing a kid through a forest?"
