Show #474 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 17th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Correcting Audi: Tesla Model 3 Charges Over 2 Times Faster Than Audi e-tron "The article was written by Simon Barke and Myles Clark. They each hold a PhD in physics, work for an international space mission at the University of Florida, and understand scientific data quite well. Matthew Mostafaei, Audi’s manager for e-tron, presented data taken from Twitter during the New York Auto Show without naming the source. (That’s plagiarism.) The data was misrepresented by plotting it on a different axis. (That’s a falsification.) He then used the data to show the e-tron’s charging superiority over the Model 3, when it actually proves the opposite. (That’s deception.) You may call this good marketing. I call it a brazen lie. At best, it is a highly misleading accident." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/17/correcting-audi-tesla-model-3-charges-over-2-times-faster-than-audi-e-tron/ NISSAN CLAIMS ITS UPGRADED PROPILOT SYSTEM ENABLES HANDS-OFF HIGHWAY DRIVING "Nissan is introducing a new version of its ProPilot Assist driver-assist system in Japan that marks a big step forward in automation. The current version of ProPilot Assist is basically adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature, but Nissan claims the new system — dubbed ProPilot 2.0 — allows for “hands-off” driving on highways." says DigitalTrends: "ProPilot 2.0 is designed to work only on highways, similar to Tesla’s Autopilot and Cadillac’s Super Cruise systems. It has the capability to follow a route set in the car’s navigation system from on-ramp to off-ramp. Once the car reaches the off-ramp, the driver must retake full control. On the highway, though, Nissan claims drivers can take their hands off the wheel while the car cruises in a single lane." https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/nissan-propilot-20-driver-assist-system/ MG ZS EV TO BE EQUIPPED WITH 44.5 KWH BATTERY "MG (part of the Shanghai-based SAIC Motor) announced further details about the MG ZS EV, currently presented at the London Motor Show. The electric crossover will be equipped with 5 kWh liquid-cooled battery, which places it almost directly against the Hyundai Kona Electric with the 39.2 kWh standard battery. The WLTP range will be confirmed in Q3." according to InsideEVs. The press release says: "The ZS EV is powered by a 44.5kWh water-cooled battery with rapid-charging capability that will enable it to be recharged from 0-80% in 43 minutes, while domestic charging on a 7kW unit takes six-and-a-half hours from 0-100%. Certified range on current WLTP test regulations is expected to be confirmed in Q3." The cost-cutting measures are necessary despite the fact that Tesla just raised $2.7 billion earlier this month, Musk said in the email."reporst The Verge today: "Musk and Zach Kirkhorn, who recently replaced outgoing chief financial officer Deepak Ahuja, will review “all expenses of any kind anywhere in the word, including parts, salary, travel expenses, rent, literally every payment that leaves our bank account,” according to the email." https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/17/18629166/elon-musk-tesla-money-changes-cfo-employee-expenses TESLA IS UPDATING BATTERY SOFTWARE AFTER MODEL S CATCHES FIRE IN HONG KONG "A Tesla Model S caught fire in a Hong Kong parking lot on Sunday, less than a month after video of a Model S bursting into flames in Shanghai, China went viral. Now, “out of an abundance of caution,” Tesla says, the company is making software changes that could reduce the risk of batteries catching fire." reports Jalopnik: "Jalopnik spoke with a Tesla spokesperson about the incident, and the company said it is making some over-the-air changes to thermal and charge management battery software to make the Model S and X safer" Tesla said: "As we continue our investigation of the root cause, out of an abundance of caution, we are revising charge and thermal management settings on Model S and Model X vehicles via an over-the-air software update that will begin rolling out today, to help further protect the battery and improve battery longevity.” With an update on the article after it was published: "This article has been amended to clarify that the Tesla Model S or X may not necessarily have to be driving for extreme battery temperatures to occur. The new thermal management software aims to manage those temperatures under all conditions." https://jalopnik.com/tesla-is-updating-battery-software-after-a-model-s-catc-1834794877 TESLA NERFS AUTOPILOT IN EUROPE DUE TO NEW REGULATIONS "Tesla is starting to push a new software update that is pulling back some Autopilot features in most European markets due to new regulations. Tesla’s Autopilot on Model X and Model S was already approved under the previous set of regulations, but they now have to walk back some functionalities in order to comply. The changes are starting to get push to Model S and Model X vehicles in a new 2019.16.1 software update." says Fred at Electrek. Tesla wrote" “Due to new local regulations, the limit of how far the steering wheel can turn while Autosteer is active has been adjusted. This may reduce Autosteer’s ability to complete sharp turns. Additionally, to initiate Auto Lane Change, the turn signal must be engaged to the first detent (held partially up or down) and the lane change must start within 5 seconds of engaging the turn signal.” https://electrek.co/2019/05/17/tesla-nerfs-autopilot-europe-regulations/ PEUGEOT POSITIONS E-208 AS TOUGH RIVAL TO FUEL-POWERED SIBLINGS "Peugeot hopes to draw buyers to the brand's first mass-market full-electric vehicle -- the e-208 -- with a long-term battery warranty and lease rates that are comparable to internal combustion versions. The favorable terms are part of Peugeot's ambitions to have the e-208 account for 15 percent of its new small hatchback's global volume." according to Automotive News Europe: "Sales prices for the 208 will be announced this spring, but Peugeot is already promoting a 48-month, 60,000-km, 299 euro-a-month lease for the e-208, with a down payment of 2,400 euros. The company says the terms compare favorably to gasoline versions (269 euros a month) and diesel versions (289 euros a month) of the 208 when the cost of fuel is taken into consideration." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/peugeot-positions-e-208-tough-rival-fuel-powered-siblings COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. TESLA MODEL Y SPOTTED IN PUBLIC FOR FIRST TIME EVER "ChargePoint made an unprecedented find - the Tesla Model Y was spotted in the public. The captured photo (sadly only one) shows us the rear of the small SUV, based on the Model 3, which will enter the market in late 2020 to potentially become the best-selling Tesla ever. It's promising to see that Tesla is already advanced enough to release the prototype/pre-production unit on public roads for test or demonstration purposes. We believe this to be the very first ever public sighting of the Model Y and perhaps it's being tested on the ChargePoint network ahead of its grand launch." reports InsideEVs.com. HERE'S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WORKHORSE Autoblog look at Workhorse: "General Motors is negotiating the sale of its shuttered factory in Lordstown, Ohio, to a company that builds electric trucks. The company confirmed Wednesday that it's in talks with Cincinnati-based Workhorse Group to sell the huge facility, and also announced plans to invest $700 million in three Ohio factories to create 450 additional jobs. The potential sale, first announced on Twitter by President Donald Trump, could preserve some jobs at the sprawling plant 60 miles east of Cleveland. But it also dashes any hope that GM would reopen the factory where until March, it had built cars for more than five decades." "This Wednesday, things went sort of nuts when President Trump tweeted that GM’s Lordstown Plant would be bought by Workhorse, a maker of electric trucks, even though the deal is by no means settled. Most of us don’t know that much about Workhorse" reports Jalopnik, not impressed with the truck they're making to go up against Rivian and Tesla trucks: "Compared to other EV trucks like the Rivian, the design and engineering of the W-15 feels pretty clunky and crude; the styling seems amateurish, and the specs aren’t exactly impressive. Sure, the dual electric motors making about 450 horsepower is impressive and gives a very good 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds, but the far more important number, the range, is a pretty disappointing 80 miles. Workhorse is also in the running, in partnership with VT Hackney, for the contract to produce the next-generation USPS mail truck. Perhaps this plant purchase is in anticipation of getting this deal? We’ve heard nothing from the Post Office to suggest any vendor has been selected." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/05/08/gm-lordstown-workhorse/ https://jalopnik.com/heres-everything-you-need-to-know-about-workhorse-the-1834673218 TESLA REGISTERS FIRST VIN BATCH OF RIGHT-HAND DRIVE MODEL 3 "Within two weeks since opening the online design studio in UK, Tesla registered the first batch of Model 3 VIN numbers for right-hand drive markets (probably the UK, which is first on the list)." reports InsideEVs: "The latest batch is for 442 Model 3 according to Model 3 VINs, including: ≈70% AWD, ≈70% International (outside North America) and ≈64% RHD (around 283). First deliveries are expected next month, but it's too early to try figure out how big demand will be in the UK, but obviously at least four-digits in the initial period we believe as the car is getting very positive reviews." https://insideevs.com/news/348997/tesla-register-first-vin-batch-rhd-model-3/ MERCEDES-BENZ SHOWS CONCEPT EQV ELECTRIC MPV IN BARCELONA "Shortly after the world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, the Concept EQV completed its first urban journey. In the port of Barcelona, the concept vehicle showed that the electric future for premium MPVs is just around the corner." Now the Concept EQV has completed its first public drive and presented itself in the port of Barcelona in front of a fitting backdrop. The vehicle is aimed equally at families, sports enthusiasts or quality shuttle services. With its progressive exterior, the Concept EQV caused a stir with passers-by in the fashion and design city. In particular, the EQ-typical radiator grille with its continuous LED strip left a lasting impression. Mercedes-Benz Concept EQV specs: 100 kWh battery pack up to 400 km (250 miles) of range 150 kW electric motor front-wheel drive fast charging – 100 km (62 miles) in 15 minutes at DC fast charger top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph) https://insideevs.com/news/349058/video-mercedes-benz-concept-eqv-barcelona/ MG ZS EV TO DEBUT IN EUROPE NEXT WEEK AT LONDON MOTOR SHOW "MG announced the European debut of its first all-electric model, the MG ZS EV, at the London Motor Show (16-19 May) at the London ExCel. The electric ZS will enter the UK market in autumn.Since March, MG received almost 800 expressions of interest for the ZS EV, which turns out to be the most for any pre-launched model in the company’s history." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The company intends to open order book at the show and begin sales on September 1, 2019. Pricing and specifications will be confirmed closer to market launch." https://insideevs.com/news/348899/mg-zs-ev-debut-europe-london/ VOLVO'S POLESTAR PICKS BRITAIN FOR NEW R&D CENTER, IGNORING BREXIT "Swedish luxury electric carmaker Polestar, which is jointly owned by Volvo Cars and its Chinese parent Geely, is setting up an R&D center in Britain to develop future passenger cars, it said on Wednesday." says Autoblog today: "The move comes as Britain's impending exit from the European Union has dented UK car manufacturing, prompting several carmakers to cut local production and warn that Brexit was deterring suppliers and EU workers. Polestar, whose cars are known for their signature Polestar gold seat belts, said there were no special considerations about Brexit in making its decision as the move was more about tapping existing engineering expertise in the UK. Polestar intends to initially employ 60 engineers in Britain and expand its team over the rest of the year." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/05/09/polestar-volvo-britain-development-center/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Friday 18th May 2018. On tomorrows show something different – one story, arguably one of the biggest EV stories of the week – and one guest from the company behind it. I’ll tell you more at the end of this show. And before we get started, just a note it’s the London Motor Show 2018 this week with everything from the Tesla Shooting Brake you might have seen which comes from my native Norfolk, to the brand new iconic electric Black Cab, to the world’s first production EV kit car the e-rod. You can search for the hashtag #LMS2018 if you’re interested in seeing more. 1000S OF SUPERCHARGERS ARE IN PERMITTING/CONSTRUCTION PHASES First up we'll dive straight into InsideEVs and Elon has been busy on the build again. This time is it Model 3? No! Model S or X? No! SpaceX? No! Tesla Energy, something about the Solar roof? No! The latest in a long line of positive announcements is about the Supercharger network. Already a huge incentive to get into the Tesla walled garden, he now says an updated Supercharger map is coming in the next few days. Responding to a question from new Model S owner Kevin Mitnick on Twitter about any superchargers coming to Woodland Hills, Elon replied: "Yeah, there are thousands of Supercharger locations going through permitting/construction, including that area. Will publish an updated map in the next few days." So what does "thousands" mean? At the basic level, it means 2,000 or more. And I presume he's talking Worldwide because there are many in the planning and permits stage even here in the UK. Oh and another reason this is the top story today, and it's got something to do with that 'walled garden' I mentioned. I wouldn’t be surprised to see another auto maker to cave in and pay Tesla for access, especially a smaller, more boutique brand without the means to build their own network. For now Tesla is burning cash and doing whatever it required to build out the network, whilst the Superchargers are never going to be used as a profit centre of Tesla owners. However, let me remind you of something from the earning call when he took questions from the blogger Galileo, who is a fan of Tesla having an exclusive club of chargers which others can’t access, as that makes them more valuable to investors. Elon said that he can see a time in the future when it's opened up to other manufacturers, indeed Tesla has even offered, but nobody was ready to be their customers just yet. And you can understand why, with huge auto makers wanting to do it their way, on their terms. However I can see a time when at least one major car maker in the medium term calls it quits on their own tech and licences EV technology from Tesla. Given Elon's mission is not to stop until all vehicles are electric, and also looking for new revenue streams, why wouldn't someone like Ford decide the best way to avoid total collapse is to licence the drivetrains from Tesla? ELECTRIC BUS FLEETS Earlier this week the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SF Muni) Board of Directors passed a resolution to begin procuring zero emission battery buses to replace electric hybrid vehicles by 2025, with a goal of achieving a 100 percent electric bus fleet by 2035" reports EcoWatch. Meanwhile, in South Korea, the government wants all buses and trucks to run with zero emissions by 2030. Electrive says: "The new plan released by the government also wants to introduce small electric two-wheelers for postal deliveries by 2020. Around the same time Seoul will also start to mass-produce and supply hydrogen and electric buses in earnest." And let me put both of those wonderful targets in perspective with a tweet from Colin McKerracher, Head of Advanced Transport, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). In 2018, "Shenzhen: May 1st: all new commercial light duty trucks = EVs. From July 1: Only EVs allowed in ride hailing. By Dec 31: replace all remaining taxis with EVs. Build 5,200 EV chargers for taxis. Retire 20,000 diesel light duty trucks. City policies will reshape auto markets." RECORD EV SALES FOR SOUTH KOREA Well let's stay in South Korea for a bit longer. "The number of electric vehicles sold in South Korea so far this year is already more than double the sales recorded for the whole of last year. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, electric vehicle sales rose from five-thousand-900 units in 2016 to 13-thousand-800 last year. It says more than 30-thousand EVs have been sold in South Korea since the turn of 2018, including preorders" according to some insight from KBS World. BMW UNVEIL SHAPE OF iNEXT Yesterday at the annual shareholders meeting for BMW in Germany they presented their vision for the iNext EV. The iNext is designed to be a technology showcase for BMW: electric propulsion, full self-driving, and advanced interfaces, said BMW CEO Harald Krueger. According to Green Car Reports: "It is supposed to be available with three different battery sizes: a 60 kilowatt-hour battery with 280 miles of range, a 90-kwh battery good for about 342 miles, and a range-topping 120-kwh battery with 435 miles of range. That last figure is longer than most gasoline cars." These types are things are never really about the car, but more about what they think they will focus on. So they say it will have Level 3 self-driving, equipped for Level 4, advanced gesture control. BMW HAS SOME PRODUCTION TIPS FOR TESLA As Tesla struggles to meet the mahoosive demand for Model 3's I'm sure what will really help is BMW chipping in with some advice. And it's this: "embrace human labor, be flexible and focus on the details." At that same annual meeting, Oliver Zipse from BMW said: "“Producing cars in cycles of 60 seconds: That is the deciding factor" BMW makes Tesla’s entire 2017 output once every two weeks. “To fully automate the assembly process is not our goal, because the human being with its unique properties is unbeatably flexible.” “Maybe there’s more leeway in the top-end market segment above 100,000 euros ($118,000), but as soon as you enter market segments with volumes like the 3- or even in the 5-Series, keeping costs under control is paramount,” BMW’s Zipse said. “You can’t allow yourself to have inefficiencies there.” EAST COAST STATES UNITE TO ADVANCE EV CHARGING States on the East Coast of the US, from Virginia to Maine, have announced support for the release of the ‘Northeast Corridor Regional Strategy for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure’ to advance public and private investments in EV charging" according to Renewable Energy Magazine: "As part of a legal settlement between the federal government and Volkswagen addressing Clean Air Act violation claims, the Northeast Corridor states, from Virginia to Maine, have up to $108 million that may be invested on charging and hydrogen fuelling infrastructure for electric cars. Electrify America, a Volkswagen subsidiary, is investing $2 billion to promote electric vehicles, which will include substantial infrastructure investments in the Northeast Corridor." I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
