What are the secrets to retaining A-Players? It comes down to loyalty. In today’s episode, Dr. Sabrina interviews loyalty expert Dov Baron to uncover the keys to building loyalty among our most valued team members. Some of these insights will surprise you! Dov Baron has been twice cited as one of Inc. Magazine’s “Top 100 Leadership Speakers to Hire”, also cited in the “Meeting and Event Professionals Guide to the Top 100 Motivational Speakers”, and he’s been named as one of the “Top 30 Global Leadership Gurus”. Dov is a man with a finger on the pulse of the evolving world of NextGen Leadership. He’s a best-selling author of several books. His latest book is Fiercely Loyal: How High Performing Companies Develop and Retain Top Talent. He is the host of the National US TV show, “Pursuing Deep Greatness with Dov Baron” on Roku TV, and the host of the number one podcast for Fortune 500 listeners globally, “Dov Baron’s Leadership and Loyalty Show” on iTunes. It’s also carried by FM and AM radio stations across the United States. Dov also writes for, and has been featured in, many industry magazines, including being featured on CNN, CBS Small Business Pulse, SHRM, Yahoo Finance, Boston Globe, Business in Vancouver, USA Today, CEO, Entrepreneur, and many more. Show Highlights: The biggest mistake leaders often make is assuming millennials are not loyal. The biggest part of communication is listening. You have to listen! Millennials stay in a job for 1.2-1.5 years, so you need to retain them in order to get your investment back. Salary no longer buys loyalty. Something you need to know: Many top-talent millennials would rather work for you than a large corporation. Dov explains why. How moving employees around based on their interests and new opportunities can be beneficial. Today’s young people learn differently than we did, and that impacts training. Dov explains why every business needs a “Chief Relationship Officer”. You must invest in your people-learning, emotional intelligence, and how to communicate better. Building relationships are crucial. When AI takes over a lot of jobs, you’ll be out of business very fast if you don’t learn to build relationships with the people who run the AI. Dr. Sabrina and Dov discuss employees that are a good fit, and those that are not. It’s important and compassionate to help someone along to their next opportunity if they are not a good fit in your business. They will respect this and have good things to say about you and your business once they have moved on. They become evangelists for your organization. Dov addresses the root of the fear of conflict, which is rejection. There’s nothing wrong with conflict, it’s the framework that is wrong. We often learn unhealthy models of conflict. You have to learn healthy models of conflict, and that requires listening, and hearing the other context. Conflict resolution is the ability to hear the context of the other person. Context isn’t present tense, it’s always history, and they may not know it in that moment. Dov describes an exercise to trigger the release of oxytocin that doesn’t involve touch, and why oxytocin is important. You don’t have reciprocal vulnerability with an acquaintance, but you do have it with a friend. It’s the willingness to confront where you disagree. Conflict has such negative connotations, so changing the word to “dialogue” or “narrative” can help create a safe space for team members to come forward and address points of disagreement. Encourage intelligence in your organization. Rebrand a conflict as an “intelligence exercise”. Dov shares a compelling story and discusses the importance of vulnerability. Show up, be real, and be authentic. Links and Resources: Get the Book!! “What we’re calling narcissistic behavior is actually the behavior that comes out of massive insecurity, and guess what? If you have skin and you’re a human, you have felt insecure at some point in time and then you’ve probably behaved in a way that was narcissistic, as a result of that insecurity.” - Dov Baron Narcissism is damaging, and a topic that I talk and teach about often, but what exactly is it and how can we recognize its traits in ourselves, and in others? Today’s Finding Brave guest gives his take on these questions and also shares his deep expertise and insightful strategies aimed at helping each of us develop our own authentic, empowered leadership. Twice cited as one of Inc. Magazine’s Top 100 Leadership Speakers to hire, Dov Baron was also cited in the Meeting and Event Professionals Guide to The Top 100 Motivational Speakers and Named as one of the Top 30 Global Leadership Guru’s. A bestselling author of several books, including his latest -- Fiercely Loyal; How High Performing Companies Develop and Retain Top Talent -- Dov has his finger on the pulse of the evolving world of NextGen leadership. Dov Baron is the Secret Weapon for many top leaders. Clients rely on his guidance to grow themselves, their cultures, their companies, deal with crisis and hear advice that they can’t find elsewhere. Dov is a master of human dynamics, understanding what consciously and unconsciously drives of individuals and teams. He has the ability to bond individuals and teams in such a way that they become fiercely loyal. Through his global work he learned from clients and colleagues alike that making decisions is both rational and emotional. Those most at risk of making poor decisions are people who are blind to the factors influencing them. Fortunately, many leaders want to understand their own leadership and improve. These are the leaders that call Dov. Life-Changing Story: In June 1990, while free rock climbing, Dov Baron fell approximately 120 feet and landed on his face. The impact shattered most of the bone structure of his face, disintegrating some of his upper jaw and fracturing his lower jaw in four places. After nine reconstructive surgeries, no external evidence remains of the damage; however, this experience was life-changing. Before the fall, Dov had spent years building a reputation as a dynamic speaker and teacher in the field of personal and professional development, but it wasn’t until years after the fall that he began to see the beauty and elegance of what had really happened – the return to his own CORE –what he calls his ‘Authentic Self’. Today: Today, Dov has been sharing his wisdom and expertise privately and on international stages with professional leaders for more than 30 years. Dov’s influence has created a massive social media platform with over 200,000 followers via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, iTunes etc. He has interviewed and worked with leaders featured on: Oprah, Ellen, CNN, Fox, MSNBC, CBS, Huffington Post, Larry King, New York Times, Washington Post, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal and many other top rated media. Dov’s “KIllTheKeynote” campaign to change the speaking industry went viral to over 5 million people on social media. He is now speaking for some of Europe’s wealthiest families at Scone Palace, Next-Gen leaders with UnleashWD and the Legacy Show, and top American c-suite leaders for The #CSuite Network. In addition to being an author and a radio host, Dov is also the leading expert on Developing Authentic Leadership and he is the world’s only Corporate Cultural Momentum Strategist, serving top performance individuals, corporations and organizations to generate both exponential growth and fierce loyalty. His passion mixed with humour and ‘get to the point’ no BS style are contagious. Within moments, you will feel a genuine connection with a man who authentically walks his talk. Dov believes that the world needs more leaders who are Authentically committed to living their purpose, standing in their truth, sharing their inner genius, and empowering others to do the same. Dov’s commitment is to take you by the hand and show you why tapping into your Authentic Self is the MOST important key to finding, developing, and retaining your top talent. Key Points from the Episode with Dov Baron: Dov helps individuals and companies build their ability around leadership, with a specific focus on purpose-driven leadership Dov was born into a ghetto in Northern England into a huge family where he was the oldest child He committed to leaving when he was 14 because he saw terrible things all around him, and knew he didn’t want thatfor himself Dov believes there was something within him that allowed him to see the world with a different perspective than those around him, and he saw himself not fitting in in many ways. Some people see that and decide to conform, while others realize they need to move on, which is how he responded to not finding a place to fit in. He left home at 15, and left England at 21. At that point, he had been married since 16 and had a child. He didn’t leave to get away from them, but rather to stay true to his long-standing desire to leave what he had come up in and going along with the clarity of his desire to leave and grow. He set out on a journey to study with different spiritual leaders around the world. He didn’t just study the religions and their philosophies, but immersed himself in their cultures and societies to really take in their messages. Dov got into speaking to companies about leadership almost by accident when a client asked him to come speak to his company. He opened his first talk by saying, “Put your hand up if you’re a racist.” He was certainly provocative, but it set the audience up to be surprised by their biases and how they stand in the way of their ability to truly lead. After several years of going full force speaking and burning out a bit in the 80s, Dov and a friend of his go to climb a mountain in Whistler in British Columbia, Canada in 1990. They climbed Brandywine Falls, and Dov wanted to climb behind the waterfall despite the height, wet rocks and steepness. After getting behind the falls and being soaking wet, he wanted to go off the path and free-climb on the rocks to come down. While climbing, a rock let loose, hit him in the face, and knocked him off the cliff, sending him tumbling down 120 feet to the ground. After an extraction effort, he got to a local hospital, where the numerous injuries were listed off with loads of broken bones and damaged organs. Dov was transferred to a bigger hospital, and in the ride there, he employed the practices he had been studying like meditation. Upon arrival at the hospital, they found nothing broken below his face. He had a very long, drawn-out recovery where he died five times. Unlike what you hear about near-death-experiences where there’s a light, Dov saw darkness, and felt a fight or a struggle to get back into his body. In those moments, his daughter who was by his side described the setting as like a movie where it was very loud with the commotion of the hospital and then suddenly going silent. Dov raised the idea that these big events change your life. His view is that they actually don’t. Instead, they magnify what you really are – all the anger, frustration and other feelings inside him that he hadn’t dealt with came to the surface. It isn’t about coming back. Back doesn’t exist. We can only go forward to what’s next or what’s new and make that work. He realized there are only three paths: go back (which he realized he couldn’t do), stay where he is and be the victim, or find a way to move forward. That means finding the meaning of his life. He realized he had never really found his purpose and needed to. He realized what mattered to him was around helping other people find theirpurpose. The change does not come in the devastation, but rather in the choice point after the devastation when we realize we will not be the same, we won’t go back and we won’t stay stuck. You know you are living your purpose when the work you’re doing will impact the lives of people whose names you don’t know, or better yet, names you will never know. Once you find it, then the real question is whether you’re willing to live it. A good sign that you’ve hit on the real thing is that living it scares you, which Dov sees as a good thing because it pushes him. People talk about fear of failure, but he doesn’t see it that way. He think we are actually afraid of how we will look in the eyes of others, will we be embarrassed, will people judge or reject us? When you’re purpose driven, you will be rejected, so you need to recognize this rejection is what you’re really afraid of so you can get over that fear. We got into what makes a great leader, and Dov summed it up in this one idea - the job of a leader is to create more leaders, not to create followers. The advice he gives people to move forward is simple. Stay curious. If you think you’re there, you’re not, so keep looking and wondering. Sometimes the move loving thing you can do for someone is not to be complimentary, but to call them out on the carpet for not living the life they were meant to live. Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship
This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is my good friend, Dov Baron. Dov is considered the leading authority on Authentic leadership and is one of INC Magazines Top 100 Leadership speakers. He’s been featured everywhere from Oprah to the Wall Street Journal and has been consulting, advising, and speaking on leadership for the last 30 years. He has spoken in front of everyone from Fortune 500 companies to the United Nations and the State Department. Dov is also the founder of Full Monty Leadership and the Authentic Speaker Academy on Leadership. He is a multi-time bestselling author and is the host of the Pursuing Deep Greatness TV show and the number one leadership podcast on Itunes, Dov Baron’s Leadership and Loyalty Show. What I love most about Dov is that he doesn’t mince words, tells you how it really is, and gets results. So, he is just the person I wanted to speak to you about leadership and life on this show. www.fullmontyleadership.com www.DovBaron.com Dov’s personal email - Dov@dovbaron.com Dov was born into abject poverty in London in a ghetto. His mother shipped him off to rabbis because he had “visions” as a kid. He started studying spiritual works with the rabbis and then later traveled the world studying with spiritual masters from all different areas including Buddhism, Hinduism, and others. He was very interested in psychology, but also studied quantum physics. In the 80’s he started speaking and had a knack for it. He was on TV, radio, newspapers. But, he was an adrenaline addict and In June 1990, while freeclimbing a rock face and fell from 120 ft. up landing on his face…or as he likes to say, he “fell 12 stories and landed on my ego.” His life as he knew it was over and he went through a very deep, dark depression, had many reconstructive surgeries and came out the other side as what he is today. Who is Shishu Sharma and what did you learn from him? • Shishu is his wife’s uncle • Dov dedicated his last book to him • One of the chapters of the book is about being a CRO – Chief Relationship Officer • Dov spent a considerable amount of time with Shishu before he died of cancer discussion what really mattered • The #1 thing was the realization of how important relationships are and how he missed out on many of the ones in his life. What is your biggest takeaway from learning this from him? • It wasn’t any changes as much as what he learned underscored what he believed about how relationships are the most important thing in our lives • Relationships tie everything together • Once you realize this, you have to invest in them and ask for help How did you get out of your depression after your fall and how did it lead to your understanding of authentic leadership? Dov tells this story at the 14 min mark… • Authenticity is what you know about yourself • What we know about ourselves is an evolution • Many people think they know themselves, but they don’t • When Dov fell, his identity got smashed to pieces as well • “There is no back, there is only forward…” • He would put on the “happy face,” but deep down he struggled to find who he was truly going to be because that person was gone. • At times he became filled with rage • He came home one night to find his cat dead and holding the cat, fell to ground weeping, not for the cat, but for the realization that he had hit bottom and had to move forward. • From there, it became about finding his purpose and how he would serve. Your identity is not what you do, but your purpose… At the 17 min mark, Dov answers the question, How do you teach people to find their true identity and purpose? • People mix up mission statements and purpose – or even passion • Purpose is emotional – it calls to your heart and your soul • Passion is transitory – when you were 15, your passion was different than it is today • Your purpose is not transitory. Your purpose is the fuel that goes into the vehicle of your passion. • Purpose runs through everything At the 20 min mark, Dov gives an exercise of how you can find your purpose… • Imagine what your Short statement eulogy would look like – what is that one statement you would want someone to say about you. • Now imagine what people are whispering in the back of the room – does it echo what is being said in the front? What is it you fear they would whisper in the back of the room? • Whatever that whisper is tells you your fear and gives you the insight you need to understand who you need to become to live your purpose. • Your purpose is not your career, but your career can be the best vehicle for your purpose. What are the characteristics of a notable leader? • If you want to be a truly outstanding, authentic leader, you must have courage • You must have courage to be curiosity • Courage + Curiosity + Love is needed • Love is critical – great leaders love their people. Because if you don’t, someone else will • Don’t be afraid to love and truly care (it’s not romantic, it’s platonic) • You must also be willing to be vulnerable – vulnerability is not a weakness, it is a great strength. You must be willing to show your humanity What creates loyalty? • What is the difference between a great friend and an acquaintance? Vulnerability • When you see people in their faults and love them anyway • The same goes for you – you’re vulnerability endears people to you What is the soul of leadership? • For Dov, the soul of leadership is service. Being there to serve. • To ask what it within a person is that can be a blind spot or that they need support in overcoming them and then serving them by helping them. What does purpose matter more than profit? • From research done between 1991-2001, it was shown that profit changes dramatically when you have purpose. • 90% of consumers expect companies to act responsibly • Companies that purpose driven are on average more than 1600% more profitable than companies that are not purpose driven. • In today’s age, being meaning drive is critical for a company. • Purpose drives profit. What is the hero’s journey and how does it relate to this? • Being a leader is a heroic journey. • Leadership starts with self and you need to be heroic about it. • The treasure you most want is hidden in the cave you most fear and you must have the willingness to step into it. • The treasure is soul – it is your most authentic self, the whole of who you are. • Many people have everything they want except that “one thing for them…” • Life is defining you or refining you – that is the choice • You can’t be a victim and you must be open to life refining you What are the elements of a great story? • The answer is the hero’s journey • Read Joseph Campbell’s, “The Hero’s Journey” • Read “The Hero with a Thousand Faces” • Before there was writing, everything was passed on through story • For a story to work, it has to involve the listener At the 44 min, Dov tells the story of how he got into speaking… “If you are going to be the best you possibly you can, you cannot do it by imitating someone else. Your hero’s journey lies in being truly yourself…” Dov asks you, “What are your taboos? What is it that you don’t think you should talk about? Why? Are those hindering you and not letting you be who you are? Best Quote: “There is no back, only forward. Life is either defining you or refining you. It is your choice.." Dov's Misfit 3: 1. Dov Baron is the host and executive producer of Leadership and Loyalty Show. His podcast has earned him not only accolades but a huge following of leaders on all levels of success as well. He is a leader among leaders, whose purpose-driven life has made him stand out in his career. He is the bestselling author of Fiercely Loyal: How High Performing Companies Develop and Retain Top Talent. Dov Baron - The Fall That Changed Everything There are moments in our lives that we always remember, and there are moments that we never forget. For Dov, that moment in June 1990 probably sits at the top of his list of unforgettables. While on a rock climbing expedition, the adrenaline junkie and successful career man fell face first from a height of 120 feet. “It was the opportunity to break me open and reveal the truth of who I am on a purpose level.” - Dov Baron It was the end of his life as he’d known it. But it was a lot like breaking open the shell of who he was. It made him re-examine the purpose behind everything that he did. Purpose Equals Giving Humans have six basic needs. The first four of them is all about oneself. It took hitting rock bottom, quite literally, for Dov to realize when enough is enough. “Purpose is not about what you get, it’s about what you give. So happiness comes from what we get, but fulfillment comes from what we give.” - Dov Baron Once Dov realized what he’s meant to do in order to give to others, he began changing his approach. He’s now known as a speaker coming to the aid of organizations who wish to cultures of loyalty and purpose, led by purpose-driven leaders. Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life? “I’ve been real.” 2. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life? “Master your story. Find out what your story is that will inspire others." 3. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? “You must be real.” 4. How do you want to be remembered? “Dov Baron was a father to many.” To hear Dov Baron talk about putting one’s heart above one’s smarts and how to take care of your tribe of talents, download and listen to the show!
