Happy New Year! While Australia was enjoying a peaceful Christmas, Ukraine was not – so why is our Army in the process of destroying 45 perfectly good Taipan helicopters rather than donating them? Ukraine made the request in mid-December and it looks like the government is pretending it hasn't happened. It seems extraordinary that highly capable military helicopters worth $900 million – that the ADF has declared it no longer wants – are being disassembled as a prelude to being buried in landfill. Who is running Australia – the elected Government or the Defence Department? This is a scandal in the making with a lot of detail to come exposing a significant coverup – but the truth will be revealed. What a shame that most people are on holiday – which is what Defence is counting on. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Western response to the war in Ukraine surprised the world in 2022 in how unified it was. European leaders and the US stood together in solidarity against Russia's brutal aggression, a rare moment of togetherness amidst other divisions. But in late 2023? Well, the situation is mixed. Increasingly sophisticated military equipment continues to be sent to Ukraine, but will it prove to be the wunderwaffe that so many Ukrainians hope for? And with the political success of far right populists in Slovakia and the Netherlands, is the unity of Europe about to break? What role does the cautious German Chancellery play here? And will the much anticipated US aid package come in time to bolster Ukraine's war effort? In this episode of Power Lines, we answer these questions and more, alongside our guest this week, Justyna Gotkowska. Justyna is the Deputy Director at the Centre for Eastern Studies (OSW) and head of its Security and Defence Department. She primarily focuses on central and Eastern Europe, notably Germany and the Baltic states, and is a regular participant in international research projects, including Think Visegrad, Estonian ICDS, and German DGAP. THE STEPHEN SHIELS RADIO SHOW

China sent a spy balloon into the United States of America and the Balloon was shot down by Joe Biden. How was this possible for Xi Jinping to get into US airspace?. These electromagnetic pulses are used in war-fare and were once classified documents. A Chinese air defense zone in the East China Sea now includes a controversial area that has long been considered international airspace. The United States has protested the move, and on Thursday a U.S. Navy surveillance aircraft flew through the zone in a freedom of navigation operation. The U.S. says the zone is a unilateral attempt to change the status quo in the East China Sea, and it has urged China not to enforce it. Beijing has responded by calling the U.S. operation provocative and saying it will take whatever measures are necessary to protect its territory. So how did a Chinese balloon end up in U.S. airspace? The balloon, which was carrying a surveillance camera, was released on Wednesday from a park in Beijing, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. It was found the next day by a U.S. aircrew on a routine mission in the area, the Pentagon said. The Defence Department has not said how the balloon entered U.S. airspace, but it is likely that it drifted there on the wind. There are affiliate links on this page. Helen is not just a survivor of her personal tragedy but an amazing overcomer passionate about inspiring others to successfully navigate their way through whatever crisis life hurls at them. As a registered nurse, she worked in two Accident and Emergency departments in NSW, plus several years of Industrial nursing. On arrival in South Australia, she successfully reinvented herself in the public relations world of corporate communications through the local government arena, the Defence Department for a decade. She has 45 years of experience navigating the complex criminal justice systems of both New South Wales and South Australia. (If you can navigate them, you can navigate anything). She speaks about Navigating Tragic Events – a blueprint for going through and overcoming tragic loss. More and more people experience tragedy across Australia in fire zones and flood-prone areas. Helen's message exudes hope for real and practical overcoming for a future beyond disaster. She knows her blueprint for overcoming crises applies to every business situation. This weekend saw the one year anniversary of the quarantine system that has now entered all our lives - MIQ. You’ll remember it started in February 2020 with a fleet of campervans on a Whangaparaoa Peninsula Naval base housing a couple of hundred Kiwi refuges from Wuhan. Then New Zealanders were asked to self-isolate, which we proved to be spectacularly unreliable at, so a government mandates and monitored quarantine system was initiated in mid-April 2020 It has been a huge undertaking.  MIQ involves 4500 rooms around the country in 32 hotels. 130,000 New Zealanders have passed through.  There have been 850 cases of Covid 19 in the facilities including 95 active cases right now. There are 4000 staff.  They have delivered 9.1 million meals and snacks, and conducted more than 900 swabs each day. Brigadier Jim Bliss says MIQ had grown into a "massive logistical exercise which runs incredibly smoothly and has served our country very well". He also says what MIQ has achieved is beyond belief And that on the whole is true, but that has not stopped many saying that the process is bad and the government is useless.  Criticisms have included that the government’s lack of business experience has contributed to MIQ’s weaknesses. This despite the system’s oversight coming from the Defence Department which has some of the highest skill levels of logisitic planning in our economy. All this is in the pursuit of accountability which is very important.  But sometimes the people holding the government to account need to be held account themselves. National’s MIQ spokesperson Chris Bishop said that National’s policy would be a purpose built facility and not the 32 hotels currently co-opted. So easy to say and so easily parroted on talkback radio but why does no-one ask him what that means. Is it one facility to cope with the 6000 residents we house every week? Because that is a very large facility.  Very large indeed.  And with a very large price tag. In the billions. Is it only for the active cases which are currently housed at jet Park and which is our most dedicated facility?  In which case we have it already, in essence. It’s a call that I would take so much more seriously if I could see that some serious thought had gone into it. It’s happened all through this year.  David Seymour last week congratulated the government on instituting a trans-Tasman bubble but claimed it was six months too late.  Which is a nonsensical statement as Australia didn’t even have an internal travel bubble six months ago. It’s the same as the National Party election policy that travellers must be tested 72 hours before departure.  A policy adopted by the government eventually. From the moment it was announced I was asking the question on how you police that in another country you have no sovereignty over and how do you ensure there isn’t a black market in dodgy tests. Which has proven to be devastatingly accurate. When we look back on this year of Covid fighting we will see a long string of reckons and crackpot ideas that were not held to account.  Not just from the government but from the opposition and media critics as well

The allegations of serious war crimes by Australian special forces contained within the Brereton Inquiry report mean some change is necessary even as justice takes its course. But should Parliamentarians involve themselves more in Defence and military oversight, as Andrew Hastie MP suggests, or could this politicise the military and cast it into the culture wars? Could adverse findings about a ‘warrior culture' lead to something useless in its place? And could a ‘black armband' view of our country and its military record imperil the venerated place of the Australian War Memorial in Australian life and remembrance? Co-hosts Scott Hargreaves and Chris Berg are joined by former Defence Department employee, Andrew Bushnell, for this discussion. They also revisit the omnishambles that is South Australia's response to its ‘pizza box' coronavirus cluster. What does the panic tell us about Governments' capacity to manage science, public health and known unknowns? The panellists also discuss their culture picks, including the disappointing Hillbilly Elegy on Netflix, Gotham, the monumental history of New York's early years, and Based on a True Story, the new and brilliant ‘memoir' by SNL alumnus, Norm McDonald.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon demonstrate that random search with early-stopping is a competitive Neural Architecture Search baseline, performing at least as well as “Efficient” NAS. Unrelated research, but near simultaneously published, from AI Lab Swisscom shows that random search outperforms state-of-the-art NAS algorithms. Researchers at DeepMind investigate the possibility of creating an agent that can discover its world, and introduce NDIGO (Neural Differential Information Gain Optimization), designed to be “information seeking.” And the Electronics and Telecomm Research Institute in South Korea creates SC-FEGAN, a face-editing GAN that builds off of a user’s sketches and other information. Watch the video podcast here. A Bit About Christina Christina started off working in the Defence Department as a management analyst, so her job entailed a lot of technology. She then got married to a marine, so that trajectory changed for her as they needed to move around for his work. Christina got a job in tech support at a bank and whilst she was working there she got to know some of the programmers who told her about Homestead. This caught her interest and so, in 1997 she built her first website. She then decided to make websites and although she didn’t have any experience, not many people did at the time. She loved it and knew she could do it from anywhere and so she founded GlobalSpex in 1999. She now has four virtual contractors based in Argentina, India and the two in the US. The GlobalSpex Niche Christina's customers are typically in engineering, energy and healthcare. Her "thing" is problem-solving, so she attracts those types of customers who have that analytical brain and appreciates analysis and research. She would never call herself a web-designer - she is a problem solver and a consultant. Christina wrote a great blog post for WP Elevation because she got so fed up with people telling her that her services are too expensive when they could create something cheaper and more easily with Squarespace or Wix. The blog explains that it's not about the website, it is about the right colours, the right codes, the right things to say in the right place. Check out the link to this post in the link section below - it's a great one. So how does Christina have that 'client fee' conversation with potential clients? She doesn’t tell them why her services are more expensive, she takes them down the path by asking them questions. Such as, “What kind of shipping are you going to have?” “How are you going to measure that?” “What’s your merchant?” Most of these questions are things that they have never thought about and have no idea. They realise that this isn't their thing, there is a lot involved and usually, they won’t want to deal with it. What Are the Challenges of Having Your Own Business? For a long time, Christina didn’t value her own skills and wasn’t compensated for it. When she became a WP Elevation member, it helped her to stand up for herself and to stop undervaluing her services. She changed the prices of her care plans which increased her recurring revenue. When you’re starting out it’s hard to charge more but each person has to find what makes them special. It will take a little while to figure out what you’re really good at, but once you do you can then get compensated for that. When the customer comes back and gives you good feedback it helps your confidence. You're always going to have doubts and everyone has imposter syndrome no matter how skilled they are, but you need to keep learning the tools, researching, and tweaking along the way. As you grow and expand you can start outsourcing the things that you don't like doing. You're going to have trial and errors to find the right person and it is never going to be perfect. Christina says that she has been through many contractors and has refined the trial process more and more each time and you work out the type of people that you work best with too. Her advice is, to be honest with the contractor and tell them how you work, what your processes are and ask if they can work this way. Try not to feel bad if it isn't working out and remember that it is business, gently tell them it isn’t working and move on. The Worries Christina is a mum with a husband who works long hours, so she is juggling a lot and sometimes things get missed. However, she has gotten better because she has built so many systems and processes to minimise those panic moments. She has templates and checklists to help with the overwhelm. Christina uses TeamWork which she says has been invaluable to help keep a track of what everyone in the team is doing. She also uses Process Street, email templates in Google drive, and is currently building an intranet so that all of the tools are in the one place. They track the milestones of a project so that they can get back to the client and tell them that they won't make the deadline if they don’t get the content to them by a particular date. Scope Creep and Communicating with Customers GlobalSpex has an onboarding process for customers with emails that go out, an initial meeting and then weekly phone calls. Christina documents everything so if they come to her with a change that is beyond the scope, she puts that in an email. It needs to be in writing because they forget or they don’t realise that they're breaking the scope. Balance Christina has a 16 and a 10-year-old and a husband that works a lot, so how does she balance it all? She says that she doesn’t balance it! There are days when she needs to be with the kids and days when she needs to work. They are quite independent and wash their clothes and do the dishes which helps. They take vacations together and she can go with them anytime and work anywhere. She doesn’t believe in balance, there is no such thing! What Next for GlobalSpex? There is so much change going on in the area of digital marketing so Christina is trying to pull away from custom design websites. She is trying to look at the bigger picture of generating revenue for the customer. She doesn't want to separate PPC, email marketing and SEO; they are part of the whole package to get more customers. Christina says that you need to find the right contractors and the right customers who also understand that. They come in with their own viewpoint of what they need, so you need to educate them. Advice for the Newbies At a local meetup recently a young guy who had just got into WordPress attended. His first question was “How do I make money?” Christina's advice was this: Always have a contract. Set your boundaries and let the customer know from the very beginning about the process and how they should best be communicating with you. Figure out what piece of it you really love and focus on that. Hone in on it, become really good at it and get known for it. “Find the thing” that will be your point of difference. Once you have the knowledge in this area your confidence comes across to the client. Christina's Favourite Tools Christina's tools that she can't live without are: Beaver Builder Premium Yoast - she is taking some of their courses at the moment to dive into it deeply. Zapier

In 1971, the New York Times published one of the most important leaks in US history - 7000 pages of top-secret Defence Department documents known as the Pentagon Papers. The Papers were leaked by a Pentagon analyst called Daniel Ellsberg in an attempt to end the Vietnam War. He tells his story to Witness.
