This week on Cover Band Confidential, we're back with fan favorite and newly minted bandleader Mark Frederickson, who's learning what it's like to start a cover band for the first time! After his first appearance struck a chord (pun absolutely intended), we brought him back to spill the tea on their first actual rehearsal, the gear rabbit holes he's fallen into, and the reality of getting ready for a real-deal gig—Make Music Day no less. We're talking song selection struggles, how to keep a new band from imploding over which way to approach a song, and whether it's too early to start rocking in-ear monitors. Plus, some honest talk about what it really takes to lead a group of humans with instruments and feelings.Whether you're starting your own group or just want to hear someone else stumble through it first, this one's got all the teachable moments and lessons you didn't know you needed.

Make Music Day isn't about headliners, stages, or ticket sales. It's about showing up with your sound—whatever that is—and putting it out into the world. What started in 1982 as a spontaneous moment in the streets of France has become a global celebration of music made by everyone. And Aaron's been part of growing that idea across more than 150 U.S. cities—and beyond. There's no audition. No gatekeeping. Whether it's a punk band on a rooftop, a saxophonist on a stoop, or 200 people sight-reading Sousa marches in a park, it's all fair game. What makes this work? A custom-built matchmaking platform connects performers with unexpected venues—think record shops, laundromats, patios, public steps. There's even room for big group experiences like Mass Appeal, where companies donate instruments and anyone can join in. No gear? No problem.Aaron shares why this kind of open access matters, especially now. In a world of algorithm-driven listening and self-curated playlists, real connection—hearing music you didn't expect, played by someone you don't know—hits different. It's discovery in its purest form.Make Music Day isn't just about performance. It's about participation. It's about remembering that music doesn't need permission—it just needs a spark. So mark the date: June 21. Wherever you are, find a way to join in. Visit makemusicday.org to find your city or start your own.Because the world doesn't need more noise. It needs more music. At least the morning was really nice! Looks like some heavy rain is headed our way this weekend. We started things off with Andy Hughes' version of the Thursday song and talked about his band, TUGG, playing this weekend at Make Music Madison as part of Make Music Day. In sports, the Grimace streak came to an end for the Mets, which led to Brian talking about what other McDonald's mascots could deliver a first pitch & start a new winning streak. Discussed yesterday's Joe Gow hearing as he tries to keep his job on the faculty at UWL, and we talked about the upcoming Simone Biles documentary. Had a great story about a family's pet donkey that went missing five years ago, but was recently seen with a new family. Justin Timberlake got popped for DUI earlier this week, but said he only had one martini. We wonder if he'll be cancelling shows, including the one in Chicago tomorrow. Today is the first day of summer, and we asked "What's something that seems easy to others, but is difficult for you?" Have you seen the 7'9” freshman on the Florida Gators? He's massive! During today's “Bad News with Happy Music”, we had stories about a city in Minnesota that had it's hydrants opened up illegally, a lawyer who poops in a Pringles can, Tasmania is trying to lure tourists with some unique job opportunities, another strange monolith has appeared, a member of the government in Vermont was busted pouring water in someone's bag, a guy tried to rob a bank after realizing that the front door was unlocked, a woman who got trapped in her Tesla, and a #FloridaMan who stole some beer. Energetic, intense, yet sensitive, and inquisitive. All of these words and more describe the style and work of Kansas City producer, musician, and composer Desmond Mason. Raised both personally and musically in Kansas City, Missouri, his musical roots are in, and have evolved from, hip hop, R&B, gospel, and jazz. Largely self-taught, he received formal education from Scott Anthony and Bobby Watson, both from the University of Missouri-Kansas City's Conservatory of Music. Becoming more widely heard, Desmond's itinerary is rapidly growing as the exposure to his work and compositions increases. He was one of Casio's representatives for the worldwide Make Music Day 2021, and is a multiple-time international beat battle/music production showcase champion, making him one of the best beat makers in the world. His writing has also made it onto the hit Fox TV show STAR, Jaigermeister campaigns, and CBS Sports Radio. In this episode, Desmond recounts his transformative journey of shedding 100 pounds and its ripple effect on every aspect of his life. He delves into a poignant childhood experience where his mother, facing challenges, sold his violin to support her struggles with addiction, temporarily derailing his musical aspirations. However, the narrative turns positive when another influential adult later steps in, reigniting Desmond's passion and determination for music. Over the past several weeks we've talked about Music in the Park, Boulevardia, Make Music Day (which is TOMORROW!) and the new releases have been piling up! On the show tomorrow we'll plow through a dozen new releases from KC musicians and bands. • We'll kick things off with a contender for song of the summer from corey dies in the end. • We'll hear a new pop song from Caley Rose, who was featured last week on KCUR 89.3 with a great supporter of KC music, Steve Kraske. • Our old friends from Six Percent have a great new EP coming soon. • The Way Way Back, slowing things down a bit on a new song and still doing everything right. • Jo MacKenzie continues to impress us with more and more new music. • New to us, Jerame Gray pouring out the emotions for those suffering in Ukraine. • Fresh off the stage from Boulevardia and Juneteenth Fest, a new one from The Black Creatures. • Some hip hop from Current exploring mental health issues. • Another new single from one of my favorite (former) KC voices, Danny McGaw. • Also new to us, music from Quinton Paige and Straight White Teeth, who both went to our show page and submitted music. It should be a fun show. We'll throw a little Boulevardia recap in there too, at the top of the show. Next week, on Tuesday, June 28 we're back at the Beer Hall at Boulevard Brewing Company with two special guests, Kat King and PURE XTC. In addition to being on the radio show from 6-7PM, they'll each play a 30-minute set in the Beer Hall from 7-8PM.

We are grateful to be joined by Roxana Pardo Garcia of LaRoxay Productions, Ming Ming Tung-Edelman of Refugee Artisan Initiative, and Tony Benton of Rainier Avenue Radio. Pivoted to PPE during the pandemic. 15:12 - Tony's Origin Story - Being a Black man has shaped him. Being a father to a daughter has shaped him. With the pandemic, people were pushed online more and more. 23:04 - Roxana talks about the projects she's working on through her site LaRoxay Productions. Started two businesses during the pandemic. Launched a fundraiser to raise $1,000,000 for their food bank. Shift from a culture of charity to a culture of justice. Also runs a company that curates events for companies. They upcycle people's clothes to make clothing accessories for pets. Is a finalist for the Northwest Circular Design Contest! Lastly, love for her community of Lake City but are using a donated space that will be torn down in a year or two. Looking to buy a location through a capital campaign to be their permanent home. 39:45 - Tony talks about his projects. Rainier Avenue Radio ran some amazing events such as Asian Voices Initiative around anti-Asian hate crimes. Make Music Nashville's primary goals are to provide an equal platform for musicians of all skill levels, interests and walks of life and to inspire the next generation of musicians through innovative outreach programming. Make Music Nashville is an all-day, open-access, free non-profit festival taking place in various neighborhoods in Nashville, Tennessee on June 21st every year. Participation is encouraged from all ages, genres and abilities, from indie rock to bluegrass to a cappella, from music students to professional artists and everything in between. More than 150 artists will spread out across the city as part of Make Music Nashville. The event will take place at more than 38 venues, including restaurants, breweries, the Zoo and the airport. This year, the event is expanding down to Murfreesboro and Franklin as well. Make Music Day is free for the city of Nashville, so we rely heavily on volunteers to keep things running smoothly. That means we need your help on June 21st! If you're available on this day and would like to help, please let us know. Here are just some of the things that you might be doing throughout the day: Tell passersby about Make Music Nashville and answer any questions audience and participators may have. Take photos of your stationed event. Help keep our performers happy. Help with setup and breakdown between artists. Help run sound. SIGN UP HERE Learn more: http://www.makemusicday.org/nashville/

Hosted by David Green of The Cultural Alliance Of Fairfield County. June 21, the summer solstice, is Make Music Day - a day celebrated the world over with musicians, amateur and professional, pouring into the streets, parks, amphitheaters, stoops, porches and more to celebrate the power of music to communicate - and have fun. In our region alone, eight towns are celebrating Make Music Day. On our June edition of Spotlight on Arts & Culture, we interviewed 7 of the 8 organizers (the 8th, Norwalk's Marc Alan was unable to participate at the last minute). But we did have Suzanne Kachmar from Bridgeport, Lou Heumann from Fairfield; Tatiana Mori from Greenwich, Paige Miglio from Milford, Jennifer DiLaura from Ridgefield, Annette Einhorn from Stamford, and Colin Healey from Stratford talking about why they were doing this and what some of the highlights of their programs will be. Listen to the conversation (count how many pianos you hear about) and enjoy the music clips that each guest brought with them.

From the legacy of the Big Nine to the creation of one of the earliest music festivals, Chattanooga has always had a rich music heritage. But recently there has been increasing focus to expand on that heritage for the 21st century. Today's conversation involves three people involved in just such an endeavor: Chattanooga Visitors Bureau's Mary Howard Ade & Candace Davis and SoundCorp's Stratton Tingle. The first half of our conversation revolves around the impetus to focus on building our music economy and the efforts of the CVB to highlight Chattanooga as a city of music, both for locals and tourists.
