In this episode, we're celebrating the student-guru relationship, and the role it has in our evolution. Each year we celebrate this relationship, and the all the teachers and teachings in our life, with Guru Purnima. Vedic meditators are invited to join Guru Purnima celebrations with Thom and other Vedic Meditation Initiators around the world during the weekend of July 20-21, 2024. If you'd like to join these celebrations, please visit thomknoles.com/guru-purnima for details of events near you. The word Guru is very much misunderstood outside of India. Parodies often show the Guru as being someone who makes demands of their followers, and the disciple as being one who blindly follows the instructions of the Guru. But the truth of the relationship is much deeper than that, and it goes both ways. The wisdom of the teacher is brought forth by curiosity of the student, which in turn leads to a level of earned trust in the teacher from the student. Thus the student follows the instructions of the teacher with eyes wide open, not blindly, as most Western mischaracterizations of this relationship suggest. In this episode, Thom previews the Guru Gita, the song of the Guru, which eloquently and elegantly explains the teacher-student relationship. It gives us a benchmark to know when we've had the well-deserved great good fortune to invite a Guru into our life who is worthy enough to support our evolution.Episode Highlights:[01:33] The Process of Illumination[04:14] Grades of Manifestation[06:54] Elements of the Self[09:41] Expanded Awareness[11:17] Sensing the Cascades of Cause and Effect[13:42] Skanda Purana[16:10] The Song of the Guru[18:56] Sweet Surrender[21:58] Stop Trying to Control Everything with Thinking[23:42] Guru-Disciple Relationship[25:39] How to Make Use of the Guru Gita[28:06] Nama Rupa Sahitam Bhavati Eva[30:09] Well-deserved, Self-created Good FortuneUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Remember when the Lakers had a terrible, terrible offense, and the only way they could score was in transition or at the free throw line? Well, that's not an issue anymore. The Lakers have, particularly since reconfiguring the starting lineup (again), been one of the best offensive teams in the NBA. In every category that matters, and it's not something fueled by what some critics call "junk" offense. (Meaning, living at the line.) Over their last 15 games, the Lakers have posted the following: 121.4 ppg (4th)offensive rating 119.8 (2nd)52.5% FG (1st)39.8 3PT% (4th)... which makes their 29th 3PA especially egregious. Why won't they take more?61.5 points in the paint per game (1st)15.3 fast break points per game (9th)4th for unassisted 3PTs -10th turnovers per game (12.7, just 1.1 off from leading the league)9th for Turnover %This is good work. And its with the bench producing virtually nothing, as of late. The main source (by expectation, at least) of scoring would be Spencer Dinwiddie, but he's not been giving the Lakers points to speak of. But why? Dinwiddie has said he's just trying to fit in on a team with a well-established pecking order. But maybe he's trying a little too hard? His usage rating is lower than Jaxson Hayes, who isn't allowed to dribble. Can the Lakers get him going? Are there other signs, though, that the Lakers might have a good team buried under a relatively mediocre record? Is the schedule finally opening up? And why, oh why, couldn't the Lakers have hired statue makers who can proofread their work? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers offense is on fire. Why? Will it last? SEGMENT 2: Can the Lakers fix Spencer Dinwiddie? SEGMENT 3: Seriously, who proofread the Kobe statue? If you look at the tax tables, you'll see that there are seven different tax brackets listed: 10%, 12%, 22%, and on up to the highest bracket at 37%. But did you know that there's also a certain amount of money you can earn that's not taxed at all? While there's not an official “0% tax bracket,” the truth is that the first $14,600 you earn as a single individual (or $29,200 if you're married filing jointly) is yours to keep tax-free, thanks to the Standard Deduction. Sure, that's not a huge amount of money, but it's also not insignificant, and there are ways you can use this part of the tax code to your advantage.Find out how the “Zero-Percent Tax Bracket” can potentially benefit you in a big way with podcast host Johnny Dean and “Professor” Rick Plum, CFP® on this week's episode of Managing Your Financial Future!

What was your favorite science story of 2023? Was it the rise of orca-involved boat sinkings? Or maybe the successful landing of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission at the moon's south pole? This week, it's the second and final part of our annual event about the best science stories of the year, with a roundup of some of the good news, animal news and all-around most important stories of 2023. Or how the World Health Organization ended the global health emergency declaration for covid-19.Plus, wonders from the animal kingdom: innovative bird nests made of anti-bird spikes, cooperation between dolphins and fishermen in Brazil and the incredible clogging power of hagfish slime.Hosts Timothy Revell and Christie Taylor discuss all of this and more with guests Clare Wilson, Sam Wong, and Leah Crane. How we achieve net zero is more than just a political or environmental decision. It is one that will have huge societal impacts. How we get our energy translates to how we move around, how we heat our homes. It's a reminder that the energy transition has many trade-offs, as we navigate achieving net zero while protecting the wellbeing of people and industry, especially during a cost-of-living crisis. Might hydrogen be part of the answer? In this special podcast, The Spectator's economics editor Kate Andrews speaks with those working in government, NGOs, and industry about how to unlock this technology. She is joined by Chris Stark, Chief Executive of Climate Change Committee (CCC); Chris Skidmore MP, author of the government's net zero review; Emma Pinchbeck, CEO of Energy UK; and Jon Butterworth, CEO of National Gas. As it says in his bio, Jonathan Panetta is “trying to heal the world with a hard rock brain and a punk rock heart.” In this episode, we talk about how songs like “Inner Demons” deal with mental health and what he hopes people take from listening to them. Jonathan shares the creation process behind his new EP and the different avenues he goes down when it comes to sound and style. Jonathan's done some collaborating, particularly with friend of the show Dany Horovitz on the single “Make Use of Your Time,” which was inspired by the “Life is Strange” video game series. We talk about working with Dany, how this happened, and other artists he's worked with. Jonathan and I do a little nerding out over the game, the amazing soundtrack and some of the takeaways from the story. “Inner Demons” also has its own music video, and Panetta worked with Nesskaf Productions and we look at the planning process and cool visuals seen throughout. Opening this episode is an excerpt from “Make Use of Your Time” and closing things out is the full track, “Inner Demons.”
We have total freedom. But we have used it to put ourselves in bondage. The good news is that what we fear is unreal. By summoning up our courage, our inherent wisdom, and our divine love, we can break all our illusory chains and re-dream the world as a realm of freedom, beauty, goodness, joy, and creative power. In today's episode of the Master Delegator Podcast, Kristy Yoder is joined by Louisa Hollingsworth. Louisa is an inspiring and outstanding mom entrepreneur who helps business owners manage their time in the digital space and have more time to do the things they enjoy by assisting them in sorting and organizing emails more effectively.Episode Highlights:03:45: How Louisa started sorting and organizing emails for business owners05:08: How to sort and organize your emails06:53: Make use of email management tools (Leave Me Alone App)11:09: Make use of folders 12:37: Folders you must prioritize and have14:46: Hiring an email management VA19:08: How to delegate email management tasks while maintaining privacy24:29: Preparations to start delegating email management tasksImportance of Sorting And Organizing Your Email InboxWorking as a VA, Louisa herself worked with a lot of business owners who found themselves in messy and cluttered emails. Louisa, who loves managing, started doing it more often for her clients and then used it to start her own business.Lucky for you, Louisa shared a few tips on how you can sort and organize your email inbox to help you get away from cluttered digital space and never-ending emails:Make Use of Email Management Tools - The easiest way to declutter and free yourself from unnecessary emails is by using an email management tool, like Leave me alone App. Basically, it's an app that allows users to roll up their favorite newsletters, put all of them in one email list to read and block everything else that is unimportant.Make Use of Folders - Another convenient way to sort your emails is by labeling them and putting them in a folder where you can easily tell which emails you need to prioritize reading.Hiring an Email Management VA - Depending on how much time you're willing to spend on organizing your emails and how fast and efficiently you want them to get done, one best option is to hire someone to do everything for you, such as an Email Management VA. Instead of doing it all yourself, why not hire someone to do it for you so you can save money and devote more time to what is most important to you and your business? About Louisa HollingsworthLouisa Hollingsworth is an entrepreneur who helps overwhelmed business owners and mom entrepreneurs manage their email inboxes, get them to zero, and teach them how to keep it that way. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell kept it short and sour last Friday, and stocks have fallen in all four trading sessions since he re-announced his hawkishness with authority at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium. With traders pricing in a 75-basis-point rate hike in September, the path forward for the U.S. seems a little less fraught than the one facing Europe, where rationing and recession loom in consequence of the continent's energy crisis. That's with inflation rising to a fresh record in August and virtually goading the European Central Bank into its own major rate hike when it meets next week. Imran Lakh, the founder and CEO of Options Insight, joins Real Vision's Andreas Steno Larsen to talk about volatility and how to trade it using options. We've been telling you for weeks about steadily declining gas prices here in Southern California and across the country ... but apparently those high gas prices are still having a major economic impact because inflation for the month of June continued at a record setting pace. We'll go In Depth on what has been the weirdest American economy in recent memory. Over 4-thousand Beagles, who just survived horrible conditions at a research facility in Virginia, are looking for loving forever homes .. we'll get you the details. And Starbucks is closing stores here in Los Angeles and other West Coast cities because rampant homelessness has become too much for their staffers to handle. California will become the first state in the country to formally move back the start time for high schools and middle schools ... we'll look at how a little extra sleep could go a long way for teenagers, and their parents. BMW is going to start charging its customers in several countries a subscription fee if owners want to use their cars' seat warmers. That's right--they're going to charge you to use the seat warmers ... in your own car. And at the end of today's show, MIT researchers predicted 50 years ago that there would be a full-scale, global societal collapse here on Earth by 2040. We're going to talk with a modern day researcher who checked their data and concluded ... yup, it's all looking pretty grim for us. Learn more about your ad choices. During the pandemic, one thing we've had a little more of--at least sometimes--is time. Time to panic and stress and worry, but also time to think and reflect. This week, in the spirit of reflection, we're revisiting a conversation with theoretical physicist Sean Carroll recorded back in 2016. At the time he had just written a book called The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself, which explores questions about purpose and belief and meaning. Today, in 2022, his book is even more poignant. If you've ever found yourself feeling woefully insignificant relative to the vastness of space and time, Carroll's perspective might just change your life. He argues that since we only have a limited time in a tiny part of space, we need to make good use of every heartbeat. The Big Picture is a poetic overview of the known universe, with deep insights into the human experience. It augments the yearly Federal Employee Viewpoint Surveys with more frequent measures. Data is great, but will agency managers do anything with what they learn? That's the question my next guest is asking. He's a professor in the Key Executive Leadership Program at American University, Bob Tobias.
We have all experienced anxiety on some level at various points in our lives. COVID-19 and the global response to it have brought massive changes and deep uncertainty since the start of 2020. Before then, 90% of Americans in the room raised their hands when asked if they had experienced daily anxiety. Wendy Suzuki, a neural science and psychology professor at NYU, says that number has gone way up. But she reminds us that at its core, anxiety is really a protective mechanism. Like all emotions, it serves an evolutionary purpose and is key to survival. In episode 43 of The Incrementalist, you will learn: 1) Anxiety is generally defined as worry over an imminent possible event or worry over uncertainty.2) Anxiety is a psychological and physical response to stress, which moves you into fight, flight or freeze mode.3) Currently, 28% or nearly 1/3 of Americans are diagnosed with a clinical, anxiety disorder. Examples are generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, PTSD, and OCD.4) Chronic anxiety weakens the immune system, contributes to heart disease, impairs brain health, creates indigestion, and makes us less productive. It causes negative plasticity in the brain, changes our biochemistry and raises blood pressure. 5) Good anxiety tells you what's important, what needs attention, what you value, and what to avoid. By befriending anxiety, you can build resilience, patience, compassion and empathy, and leverage nervous energy to deal with challenges. 6) According to the Yerkes-Dodson curve, a bit of anxiety can put you in the optimal state to perform a difficult task. But just like fine wine and delicious chocolate, you can have too much of a good thing. 7) Four tools that Dr. Suzuki recommends for activating the parasympathetic, destressing part of the nervous system:a) Deep Breathing - which includes the 4 x 4 box breathing method.b) Movement - which includes a power walk outside or walking up and down the stairs. Cardio exercise for about 45 minutes, two to three times per week, gives the most benefits.c) Joy conditioning - which is active recall and selection of memories of your most joyful experiences, especially ones with olfactory associations.d) Social support - which you might need to choose carefully because certain relationships are better than others for certain purposes and in different contexts.8) Why you need to create an enriched environment and escape impoverished environments for brain health and emotional wellbeing.9) Approach anxiety with an exploratory mindset so you can harness it as a superpower.10) Embracing good anxiety helps you to avoid toxic positivity and experience the expansiveness of your emotions.Read the transcript.
