The 5 Biggest RMD Mistakes in Retirement

Retirement Revealed

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 24, 2026 14:37

Jeremy Keil explains the 5 RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) mistakes in Retirement and how to avoid them. A retiree recently called for help. It was their first year taking Required Minimum Distributions. They had delayed their first RMD until April of the following year — which meant taking two distributions in one tax year. That part was allowed. In some cases, it can even be strategic. But when they called their IRA custodian and asked, “How much should I withhold for taxes?” they were given the default answer: 10% federal withholding. They assumed that must be right. It wasn't. They ended up short on taxes by more than $10,000 — and owed penalties on top of that. That situation wasn't caused by breaking a rule. It was caused by following the rule without a plan. And that's where most RMD mistakes begin. I recently wrote an article for Kiplinger magazine titled “5 RMD Mistakes That Could Cost You Big-Time: Even Seasoned Retirees Slip Up” and for this week's episode of the “Retire Today” podcast I decided to talk through each of these mistakes in detail. Mistake #1: Waiting Until Age 73 to Create a Plan Turning 73 is not a strategy. If you wait until the government forces your first RMD to think about it, you've already missed years of opportunity. The window between retirement and RMD age is often the most flexible tax-planning period of your life. In those years, you may have: Lower earned income No required withdrawals yet Control over when and how you take distributions That's prime territory for intentional tax planning. Once RMDs begin, you've lost some flexibility. In the KEEP step of the Retirement Master Plan, tax timing matters. RMDs don't happen in isolation. They interact with Social Security, pensions, and brokerage income. Planning ahead—sometimes a decade ahead—can dramatically change the long-term outcome. Mistake #2: Failing to Make Use of Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) This one surprises me every year. RMDs currently begin at age 73 (moving to 75 for those born in 1960 or later). But Qualified Charitable Distributions still start at 70½. That means you can send money directly from your IRA to a charity before RMDs even begin. Why does that matter? Because a QCD: Reduces your IRA balance (lowering future RMDs) Keeps the distribution out of your taxable income May help limit Social Security taxation May help reduce Medicare premium surcharges Many retirees continue writing checks to charities from their checking account, hoping for a deduction. With today's larger standard deduction, many people don't itemize at all. Going directly from IRA to charity is often more tax-efficient—and sometimes dramatically so. If charitable giving is already part of your plan, the tax strategy should be part of it too. Mistake #3: Doing the Wrong Tax Withholding When retirees call their custodian to take their RMD, they're often asked: “How much would you like withheld for taxes?” The default federal withholding is often 10% for IRAs and 20% for 401(k)s. Many people assume, “That must be right.” It often isn't. I recently saw a retiree who delayed their first RMD until April of the following year—which meant taking two distributions in one year. They defaulted to 10% withholding. They ended up underpaying taxes by more than $10,000 and owed penalties. The custodian can't provide tax planning. That's not their role. Before taking an RMD, you need to project: What tax bracket you'll land in Whether additional withholding is necessary How this affects your overall estimated payments Again, this falls under the KEEP step. Don't let the default settings dictate your tax bill. Mistake #4: Not Realizing How Your RMD Income Affects the Rest of Your Tax Return RMDs don't just increase taxable income. They can: Make more of your Social Security taxable Push capital gains from 0% into taxable territory Trigger Medicare IRMAA surcharges Many retirees focus only on their marginal bracket. But the real issue is tax cost, not tax bracket. An extra $20,000 RMD might not just be taxed at 22%. It could cascade into additional taxation elsewhere. That's why projections matter. You don't want to discover these ripple effects after the fact. Mistake #5: Forgetting That the M in RMD means ‘Minimum,' not ‘Maximum' The M in RMD stands for minimum. It does not mean that's the only amount you're allowed to withdraw. You can: Withdraw more than your RMD Complete Roth conversions after satisfying the RMD Send more than your RMD amount to charity (subject to QCD limits) Sometimes taking more than the minimum makes sense—especially if it smooths taxes over multiple years. RMDs are a rule. They are not a retirement strategy. The Bigger Lesson RMDs are not just a government requirement. They are a planning opportunity—or a planning hazard. They affect your income plan (MAKE), your spending plan (SPEND), your tax strategy (KEEP), and even what you ultimately LEAVE behind. The biggest mistake isn't misunderstanding a rule. It's treating RMDs as an isolated event instead of part of a coordinated retirement master plan. Because in retirement, small tax decisions compound just like investment returns may do. And when handled intentionally, RMDs don't have to derail anything at all. Don't forget to leave a rating for the “Retire Today” podcast if you've been enjoying these episodes! The future of Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) subsidies is a pressing issue for retirees and anyone shopping for health insurance on the ACA marketplace.  With the generous subsidies brought by the American Rescue Plan Act set to expire at the end of 2025, I break down exactly how these subsidies work, what changes are coming in 2026, and what that means for your wallet. We're talking eligibility thresholds, how income is calculated, why premiums might rise, and—most importantly—shares practical strategies for lowering your adjusted gross income to continue qualifying for subsidies as the rules tighten. Whether you're planning to retire before age 65 or just want to make sure you're making the most of affordable health options, this episode is packed with actionable advice to help you navigate the shifting health insurance landscape. Stay tuned to hear how you can prepare before the subsidy cliff arrives. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [00:00] ARPA health subsidy set to expire. [06:48] Special enrollment eligibility criteria. [09:49] Estimate income for subsidy applications. [12:50] Retirement subsidy eligibility insights. [16:38] Managing income for post-2025 health subsidies. [19:50] Retirement planning and tax strategies. What Retirees Need to Know About Expiring Subsidies in 2026 For many Americans considering early retirement, one of the pressing concerns is the high cost of health insurance before Medicare eligibility kicks in at age 65. The Affordable Care Act (ACA), often called Obamacare, has provided critical subsidies—tax credits that reduce monthly health insurance premiums for individuals and families who earn between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL). Thanks to these subsidies, many retirees have found coverage that's far more affordable than what existed before the ACA. These subsidies aren't static, however. Their availability, amount, and eligibility thresholds have changed over time, notably with the enhancements set by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) during the pandemic. But much of that is set to change again at the end of 2025, and retirees need to understand what's at stake and how they can prepare. How ACA Subsidies Work Right Now Currently, the vast majority of people purchasing health insurance through the ACA marketplace receive premium assistance. As of 2024, 91% of the 21 million marketplace participants benefit from some kind of subsidy, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. These subsidies are calculated based on household income and size, and for now, thanks to ARPA, even those earning above the previous 400% FPL cutoff have been able to secure relief. The system works on a sliding scale: the higher your income (relative to the FPL), the lower your subsidy—and vice versa. For instance, a single retiree in most U.S. states falls under the subsidy limit if their Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) is less than $60,640 (400% of the 2024 federal poverty level). For a couple, that threshold is $84,600. The subsidies fill the gap between what the government deems an affordable percentage of your income and the cost of a benchmark “silver” marketplace plan. The Big Change: Subsidy Cliff Returning in 2026 A crucial point highlighted in episode 267 of Carolyn C-B's podcast with Ryan Morrissey: the most generous version of these subsidies, courtesy of the ARPA, will sunset at the end of 2025. We are about to return to a world where if your income exceeds 400% of the FPL by even just $1, you lose all subsidy assistance—an abrupt subsidy cliff. Previously, the ARPA smoothed this out, allowing gradual decreases rather than outright elimination at the cutoff. That made planning far simpler for retirees managing taxable withdrawals from savings or retirement accounts. Starting in 2026, the sudden loss of these subsidies at the income cliff could mean the difference between a manageable $400 monthly premium and a staggering $2,700+ for a similar plan. To add to the challenge, insurers anticipate higher premiums in 2026 as healthier enrollees fall off plans due to pricing and subsidy loss. Planning Strategies for Retirees With the looming subsidy cliff, retirees may need to rethink their approach to generating retirement income. Since eligibility is based on income, not assets, it's possible to have significant savings but low reportable income, qualifying you for subsidies. Key strategies include: Harvest Extra Income Before 2026: Consider accelerating IRA distributions, realizing capital gains, or selling assets in 2025 while subsidies remain generous. Build Up Liquid Assets: By moving assets into cash accounts before retirement, retirees can “live off” cash in years they need to keep income low, preserving subsidy eligibility. Utilize Roth and Home Equity Withdrawals: Roth IRA distributions (if held 5 years and owner is 59½ or older) don't count toward MAGI; home equity lines or reverse mortgages can also provide non-taxable funds. Make Use of Pre-tax Contributions: While still working, increase contributions to 401(k)s, IRAs, and HSAs—these lower MAGI and can be a tool for subsidy planning. Congress may choose to extend or reform these subsidies again, but as of now, retirees should assume the cliff is returning. If you plan to retire—and especially if you'll rely on individual ACA coverage before age 65—be proactive. Monitor federal updates, calculate your projected MAGI, and consult a knowledgeable financial advisor for personalized guidance. Open enrollment begins November 1st each year—make sure to check your state's marketplace for updated premiums and subsidy parameters for 2026. Planning now can safeguard your health and your finances through a rapidly changing insurance landscape. In this episode, we're celebrating the student-guru relationship, and the role it has in our evolution. Each year we celebrate this relationship, and the all the teachers and teachings in our life, with Guru Purnima. Vedic meditators are invited to join Guru Purnima celebrations with Thom and other Vedic Meditation Initiators around the world during the weekend of July 20-21, 2024. If you'd like to join these celebrations, please visit thomknoles.com/guru-purnima for details of events near you. The word Guru is very much misunderstood outside of India. Parodies often show the Guru as being someone who makes demands of their followers, and the disciple as being one who blindly follows the instructions of the Guru. But the truth of the relationship is much deeper than that, and it goes both ways. The wisdom of the teacher is brought forth by curiosity of the student, which in turn leads to a level of earned trust in the teacher from the student. Thus the student follows the instructions of the teacher with eyes wide open, not blindly, as most Western mischaracterizations of this relationship suggest. In this episode, Thom previews the Guru Gita, the song of the Guru, which eloquently and elegantly explains the teacher-student relationship. It gives us a benchmark to know when we've had the well-deserved great good fortune to invite a Guru into our life who is worthy enough to support our evolution.Episode Highlights:[01:33] The Process of Illumination[04:14] Grades of Manifestation[06:54] Elements of the Self[09:41] Expanded Awareness[11:17] Sensing the Cascades of Cause and Effect[13:42] Skanda Purana[16:10] The Song of the Guru[18:56] Sweet Surrender[21:58] Stop Trying to Control Everything with Thinking[23:42] Guru-Disciple Relationship[25:39] How to Make Use of the Guru Gita[28:06] Nama Rupa Sahitam Bhavati Eva[30:09] Well-deserved, Self-created Good FortuneUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Remember when the Lakers had a terrible, terrible offense, and the only way they could score was in transition or at the free throw line? Well, that's not an issue anymore. The Lakers have, particularly since reconfiguring the starting lineup (again), been one of the best offensive teams in the NBA. In every category that matters, and it's not something fueled by what some critics call "junk" offense. (Meaning, living at the line.) Over their last 15 games, the Lakers have posted the following: 121.4 ppg (4th)offensive rating 119.8 (2nd)52.5% FG (1st)39.8 3PT% (4th)... which makes their 29th 3PA especially egregious. Why won't they take more?61.5 points in the paint per game (1st)15.3 fast break points per game (9th)4th for unassisted 3PTs -10th turnovers per game (12.7, just 1.1 off from leading the league)9th for Turnover %This is good work. And its with the bench producing virtually nothing, as of late. The main source (by expectation, at least) of scoring would be Spencer Dinwiddie, but he's not been giving the Lakers points to speak of. But why? Dinwiddie has said he's just trying to fit in on a team with a well-established pecking order. But maybe he's trying a little too hard? His usage rating is lower than Jaxson Hayes, who isn't allowed to dribble. Can the Lakers get him going? Are there other signs, though, that the Lakers might have a good team buried under a relatively mediocre record? Is the schedule finally opening up? And why, oh why, couldn't the Lakers have hired statue makers who can proofread their work? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers offense is on fire. Why? Will it last? SEGMENT 2: Can the Lakers fix Spencer Dinwiddie? SEGMENT 3: Seriously, who proofread the Kobe statue?  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Stitch FixStyle that makes you feel as good as you look—get started today at StitchFix.com/LOCKEDONNissanOur friends at Nissan have a lineup of SUV's with the capabilities to take your adventure to the next level. How we achieve net zero is more than just a political or environmental decision. It is one that will have huge societal impacts. How we get our energy translates to how we move around, how we heat our homes. It's a reminder that the energy transition has many trade-offs, as we navigate achieving net zero while protecting the wellbeing of people and industry, especially during a cost-of-living crisis.  Might hydrogen be part of the answer? In this special podcast, The Spectator's economics editor Kate Andrews speaks with those working in government, NGOs, and industry about how to unlock this technology. She is joined by Chris Stark, Chief Executive of Climate Change Committee (CCC); Chris Skidmore MP, author of the government's net zero review; Emma Pinchbeck, CEO of Energy UK; and Jon Butterworth, CEO of National Gas.  This podcast is kindly sponsored by National Gas.

As it says in his bio, Jonathan Panetta is “trying to heal the world with a hard rock brain and a punk rock heart.”   In this episode, we talk about how songs like “Inner Demons” deal with mental health and what he hopes people take from listening to them. Jonathan shares the creation process behind his new EP and the different avenues he goes down when it comes to sound and style.   Jonathan's done some collaborating, particularly with friend of the show Dany Horovitz on the single “Make Use of Your Time,” which was inspired by the “Life is Strange” video game series. We talk about working with Dany, how this happened, and other artists he's worked with. Jonathan and I do a little nerding out over the game, the amazing soundtrack and some of the takeaways from the story.   “Inner Demons” also has its own music video, and Panetta worked with Nesskaf Productions and we look at the planning process and cool visuals seen throughout.    Opening this episode is an excerpt from “Make Use of Your Time” and closing things out is the full track, “Inner Demons.”

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell kept it short and sour last Friday, and stocks have fallen in all four trading sessions since he re-announced his hawkishness with authority at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium. With traders pricing in a 75-basis-point rate hike in September, the path forward for the U.S. seems a little less fraught than the one facing Europe, where rationing and recession loom in consequence of the continent's energy crisis. That's with inflation rising to a fresh record in August and virtually goading the European Central Bank into its own major rate hike when it meets next week. How to Make Use of Our Limited Time in This Tiny Part of Space with Sean Carroll

During the pandemic, one thing we've had a little more of--at least sometimes--is time. Time to panic and stress and worry, but also time to think and reflect. This week, in the spirit of reflection, we're revisiting a conversation with theoretical physicist Sean Carroll recorded back in 2016. At the time he had just written a book called The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself, which explores questions about purpose and belief and meaning. Today, in 2022, his book is even more poignant. If you've ever found yourself feeling woefully insignificant relative to the vastness of space and time, Carroll's perspective might just change your life. He argues that since we only have a limited time in a tiny part of space, we need to make good use of every heartbeat. The Big Picture is a poetic overview of the known universe, with deep insights into the human experience.
