Our family friend Zach Tucker (age 26, Russia RM, University of Utah Finance Grad, Current MBA Student at University of Minnesota) joins us to share his story. Zach (who is no longer active in the Church and plans to marry a man) shares his journey to accept his sexual orientation (mostly after his mission) and eventually come out to family and friends (lots of love and support). Zach talks in-depth about coming out to others (a close *girlfriend*) and then his family (via a group video) which led to a dinner around his mother Pam's table. Zach talks about the love, good questions, and family support he received that night (which continues today). Zach talks about supporting his active LDS mother Pam as she finds joy in the Church and the family's love and support as Zach moves forward in the path he feels is best for him. Zach talks about his family's unity and love—even with differences. It is a beautiful family love story that follows the principle taught by Elder Quentin Cook in his October 2020 General Conference Talk: “Unity and diversity are not opposites. We can achieve greater unity as we foster an atmosphere of inclusion and respect for diversity.” Zach then talks about the group he was the most nervous to come out to—his “sports-loving, jock, republican, straight” friends that he considers as brothers —his boys that he grew up with—boys that he hopes being gay doesn't change their friendship and brotherhood. Zach talks about the positive experience coming out to his bros and their love, support, humor, and interest in Zach. I was happy to hear these specific examples and wish I could go back in time and say the same for a couple of my high school classmates who came out as gay. Zach talks about being “guided by love” for others in everything he is doing and invites others to do the same. I was so moved listening to Zach and honored to have him on the podcast. But the truth is a success is a deeply personal concept, and defining it for yourself is key to living a fulfilling life.Often, we get so caught up in chasing what we perceive as success that we forget to define it for ourselves. Success can mean having a fulfilling career, a happy family, financial stability, good health, or positively impacting the world. The point is it isn't a one-size-fits-all concept. Dear Family and Friends,Many of us wrestle with the gap between feeling like we are not enough and our dreams, between who we are and who God says we are meant to be. So many times we feel like we have messed things up, or, in some ways, have not measured up, so we end up asking, “Why Me?”. We are not alone in this; Moses, Gideon, Elijah, Jeremiah, and Peter all felt this way, that they were not enough, asking “Why Me?”. And guess what? They weren't. But with God in the fire with them they were used to change the world. And God can be in the fire with us. Dear Family and Friends,This Sunday, we will conclude our series on the book of Judges by taking a closer look at the life of Samson. By many accounts, he is the worst of all the judges. His life is full of deception and scandal, and his moral failures are too many to count.A man chosen by God to deliver the Israelites from the Philistines… but yet he made a series of foolish choices with real life consequences. Four times across three chapters we are told that the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon Samson. But yet, he forgot where his true strength came from. It's tempting to read the story of Samson and think, what an idiot! But if we're honest, there are several elements to his life and story that can become all too familiar if we really pay attention to what is happening behind the scenes. Together, we will wrestle with several questions based on lessons from the life of Samson. Come and learn more about how the life of a Tragic Hero relates to our story in 2023. 

Dear Family and Friends,Over the past several weeks, we have been looking at some of the stories in Judges of people who God used to rescue and bring relief to Israel in times of oppression. We've already seen that God doesn't choose leaders based on human calculations - and that is good news for all of us. In fact, the further we get into the Judges, the clearer we see that the real hero is God - and he can call up and empower and work through anyone. Join us this week as we look at the story of Jephthah - a man who God works through to rescue Israel, even though he has some serious flaws. And we will see that God is moving his story forward, remaining faithful to his people, even when there is a lot of confusion and chaos. Because God's story is ultimately about his faithfulness to us - a faithfulness and commitment that has been there from the very beginning.

Dear Family and Friends,This Sunday, we will continue our series through the book of Judges by looking at the story of a very unlikely hero, Gideon. When God calls him to accomplish something great and amazing, Gideon reminds God of his inadequacies. When God calls him by a new name, Gideon struggles to see himself as God sees him. When God calls him to fight a great battle, Gideon wonders about the great odds against him. Gideon's story reminds us that our God is bigger than our fears, our problems, our worries, and our failures. He is bigger than our sin and shame. He knows all about the Midianites in our lives. He knows the losses we have faced and the guilt and regret we carry, and yet, He offers us a better story, a better dream, a better task, a better life and best of all, a better understanding of His plan, His purpose, and His presence than we have ever known. God is with us. You are not alone.You will want to read Gideon's story especially if you are facing long odds in any area of your life. Take about fifteen minutes this week and read or listen to Gideon's story in Judges 6-8.

Dear Family and Friends,We continue our series on the book of Judges this Sunday, looking at the powerful story of Deborah, a remarkable leader God raised up who was not just a judge, but a prophet and a woman. Way back around 1200 BC, God was sending a powerful message when He chose a woman to serve in a position of national leadership. We'll meet a colorful cast of characters – Deborah, Barak, Sisera, Jael, and Heber. What can we learn from them? What does the Bible teach us about God and women? How does God view the abuse of women? What kind of people does God use to accomplish His purposes? We will answer these questions and more as we discover God's vision for the kind of kingdom He wants to build on earth. I am dedicating this weekend's message to all the women in our community. Men, bring your wives, sisters, daughters and friends as we listen and learn from the lives of two remarkable women in Judges 4 & 5.

Dear Family and Friends,We will be launching a new sermon series this weekend on the book of Judges titled Unlikely Heroes. The book of Judges has been described as one of the most thrilling, colorful, and disturbing books of the Bible. It has themes of great faith, lies, political intrigue, violence, idolatry, power, uncommon heroism, love and death. More than anything, it portrays God's repeated faithfulness even though God's people repeatedly rebelled against Him and failed Him. While these things happened a long time ago, their stories are in the Bible because we may not be all that different from them! This season, we will learn about how God raised some ordinary, unlikely heroes to lead and guide His people during turbulent seasons. Join us as we seek to discern God's calling upon us as flawed, everyday people to step into freedom from the negative cycles in our lives, in our families, and in our culture. We just have to make sure we are listening, we are available, and we are willing to be used by God.

Theresa is one of the most uplifting people I know. She has spoken extensively on multicultural issues, special needs, and how we can all live out our God-given potential. We will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this weekend, as well as celebrate our Haven Special Needs Ministry.

My So-Called High School Rank, premiering on HBO and HBO MAX, is a special documentary that gives an unfiltered view into the private loneliness and pressures of teenage life. This was especially true in March 2020 when students were forced to settle into new realities, feeling isolated and frustrated with so much out of their control. This timely documentary chronicles the creation of a musical theater production at Granite Bay High School in Sacramento, California, and is inspired by students' stories of the constant pressures to achieve a top rank in every part of their lives to get ahead in today's fierce college admissions process. In an uncanny case of art anticipating real life, Granite Bay's musical “Ranked” was in the works weeks before Rick Singer and the “Varsity Blues” scandal made headlines in 2019. The play's apt timing and subject matter speak to a culture where many students feel driven to succeed at any cost. As news emerged of the production of a musical exploring these critical issues, other schools reached out to stage their own productions. High schoolers around the country connected with the show's themes as they themselves struggle to find their place in the world amid intense college admissions competition.    The film chronicles auditions and rehearsals at three high schools from Ripley, West Virginia to Cupertino, California to the Bronx, New York where students face similar challenges despite dramatically different life circumstances. It also charts the success of the musical and the first steps towards the realization of the creators' dream to mount the show on Broadway only to be sidelined by the global shutdown. Shot over two years in public schools representing vastly different communities,  My So-Called High School Rank reveals the remarkable resilience and similarities that bind this generation across economic and racial divides.    The award-winning producers and directors, Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg's films and series have been shortlisted for the Oscars and earned multiple Emmy and Peabody nominations, among other honors. They are joined by two fabulous and inspirational students featured in the documentary. Anvita Gattani who played the original role of Jordan in Ranked at Granite Bay High School is currently studying at NYU Tisch. Nahiely Urbaez Cruz is a former student at Fordham High School for the Arts and is currently at Cornell University. Kevin Hines is a storyteller, best-selling author, global public speaker, and award-winning documentary filmmaker. In the Year 2000, Kevin threw himself off the Golden Gate Bridge in an attempt to end his life. He needed his immense mental pain to end but regretted his decision the moment he jumped. Many factors contributed to his miraculous survival including a sea lion who kept him afloat until the Coast Guard arrived and an amazing team of doctors. Kevin now travels the world sharing his story of hope, healing, and recovery while teaching people of all ages the art of wellness and the ability to survive pain with true resilience.  Kevin is in pre-production of his new Docu-Series The Journey and is working on a comic book version of his life in a cosmic and supernatural form called Hope Dealers. His fight has been long and arduous, beginning with being born into abject poverty, being put up for adoption, and having his biological older brother pass away as a child. His mental health was further challenged because he was bullied because of his unknown mixed race, his bipolar, and his suicidal ideation.  Kevin survived the unimaginable, jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge to see another day- a true miracle. He's determined to remain committed to life until its natural end. He reminds us all how much we have to live for. His motto Be Here Tomorrow and every day after that has touched and saved countless lives. Dr. Ran Anbar is a pediatrician board certified in pulmonology who offers hypnosis and counseling services in La Jolla, California, and Syracuse, New York. He's past president, fellow, and approved consultant of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. He's here today to discuss the power of hypnosis, which has long been looked upon with confusion and skepticism. He shines a light on this underutilized field of medicine and why it should be the first line of defense before medication for mental health symptoms. With 25 years of experience, Dr. Anbar is a leader in clinical hypnosis who has successfully treated over 7,000 children. He's served as a professor of pediatrics and medicine and the director of pediatric pulmonology at SUNY Medical University in New York for 21 years. He's worked as an editor for the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis and directed more than 20 clinic workshops on pediatric hypnosis. He's trained more than a thousand healthcare providers, been the principal investigator in 10 published case studies of pediatric hypnosis, is involved in research trials of children with cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary disorders, and has lectured all over the world.  Dr. Anbar is a published author of more than 50 articles, abstracts, and book chapters on pediatric functional disorders and pediatric hypnosis. This weekend, a healthy, vibrant, young pregnant Black woman and her husband went to the hospital in Texas. 24 hours later, both the baby and the mother were dead. Now her children are without a mother and her husband, Brennon, is without a wife. And what we know, is that pregnant Black women all over the country are having HORRIBLE struggles with their pregnancies at rates far worse than white women. And every expert has said that it is basically systemic racism embedded in the medical field.
