Navigating the Complexities of MarketingIn a recent episode of our podcast, we had the pleasure of hosting Marc Ensign, a fractional Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) specializing in the legal, financial, and medical sectors, and the founder and CEO of LoudMouse. Marc shared his extensive experience and insights into effective marketing strategies, the challenges businesses face with marketing agencies, and the importance of leadership and data transparency in driving successful marketing efforts. This blog post delves into the key themes discussed in the episode, offering actionable advice and thorough explanations to guide businesses in their marketing endeavors. One of the critical points Marc emphasizes is the lack of dedicated leadership in marketing within many organizations. While companies typically have a CEO, CFO, and sales team leaders, marketing often gets sidelined. This absence of leadership can lead to ineffective strategies and wasted resources. Marc's role as a fractional CMO allows him to step in and provide the necessary oversight and direction. By understanding the intricacies of marketing and having a comprehensive view of the business, he can identify issues that may not be apparent to other executives. This insight enables him to make informed decisions and adjustments to marketing strategies based on data rather than gut feelingsMarc notes that the marketing landscape is constantly evolving, making it essential for businesses to stay updated. He emphasizes the importance of authenticity and transparency in marketing efforts. In a world where consumers are increasingly skeptical, presenting a genuine brand story and connecting with audiences on a human level is crucial. Many businesses struggle to answer fundamental questions about their marketing performance, such as conversion rates and lead sources. This lack of clarity often leads to frustration and disconnection from marketing efforts. Marc stresses the need for robust tracking systems to gain insights into what is working and what isn't.About Marc Ensign:MARC ENSIGN is a renowned marketer, prolific storyteller, and accomplished musician. After spending over a decade playing bass with the Broadway show Rent, Marc discovered he had a talent for getting people to pay attention. Think about it. How else does a kid with no experience or connections pass up thousands of other musicians to land the most coveted gig in New York City?Really good marketing. When his stint on Broadway ended, he (temporarily) hung up his bass and built a successful digital marketing agency to help companies compete in otherwise impossible industries to break into. This approach caught the attention of Fortune 500 Companies such as Berkshire Hathaway, American Express, and Nike, as well as Celebrities, Athletes, and Entertainers like Tiger Woods and Oprah Winfrey. But eventually, that sort of thing got boring, so he moved on. Now, leveraging over twenty years in the marketing industry, Marc is working with companies as a Fractional CMO to solve the marketing issues that have been plaguing businesses for years, from underperforming agencies and unpredictable results to wasted marketing spend and a lack of transparency. All while alleviating the stress of managing the marketing team so business owners can focus on what they do best. And that's (more or less) how LoudMouse was born.Of course, none of this would be possible without Marc's incredibly understanding wife, who has been on this rollercoaster for 22 years and counting. Together, they have two kids: Bella, who is currently attending FSU with a major in political science and journalism, and Zach, who is studying to be a game designer. As far as that whole music thing goes, Marc still tours a few times a year with various Broadway shows. It's a pretty cool side hustle and an even better way to get people to give you a standing ovation at the end...

In this episode we speak with Marc Ensign. Marc has shared the stage with the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk, Brené Brown, Simon Sinek, Chelsea Clinton, and many more. His writing has been featured in Forbes, The Huffington Post, CNN, The New York Post, and many other publications. Through Marc’s personal branding agency LoudMouse, Marc helps people build a brand around themselves. Marc’s background is in music, he’s a bass player. He went to Berkley college of music in Boston, graduated with a degree in music performance and moved in with his mom as an unemployed musician. He dreamt of working on Broadway, so he started creating a personal brand around himself. Fresh out of college, he was unqualified and with zero experience. Still, he started positioning himself as an authority. He created a logo for himself, got headshots done and started hanging around Broadway and networking (or stalking people as he also refers to it). He reached out to Bass Player magazine and told them he’s friends with all these people on Broadway and he could do a story for them about what it’s like to be on Broadway. They loved the idea and gave him 350USD. Now he was able to call people and say he’s writing an article for a prestigious magazine and offer to interview them. He went as far as to set terms: “an hour interview”, “get a copy of the music of their show”, “let him watch their show from the pit”. Those who disagreed were off “the list”. By the time the article came out he had successfully positioned himself as an authority. He ended up playing in the show RENT on Broadway for 10 years. He made the transition to the marketing and branding world when he realised that marketing comes naturally to him and he wanted to help other people. He founded a company helping musicians and artists market themselves. At some stage someone at American Express saw his work with the artists, which was very creative, and reached out to him. That was a tipping point for his business. American Express lead to Nike, Berkshire Hathaway and other mega brands. It took him 10 years in that business to realise he hates working for corporations. “The world doesn’t need someone to sell an extra can of Pepsi. I want to make an impact in the world and, working for those companies, I’m not doing that”. That’s fascinating to us because it seems like an evolution many of our guests went through, when searching for meaning. He decided he wanted to work with people rather than being a cog in the wheel of big companies. He left that company and all of the benefits that came along with it and followed his true passion trying to help change the lives of people for the better. He opted to walk away with nothing. That’s how passionate he was about this. And he has no regrets. “Looking back it was the best thing I ever did, things happened the way they were supposed to happen”. He founded LoudMouse with a notion of doing for people what he did for companies. With years of experience, a natural talent and TONS of passion to do good, the success that followed seems natural. Marc shared some practical tips on how to build your own personal brand: - Be clear about who you are and who you’re communicating with. “Who are the people that are stuck awake at night worried about this problem that I’m going to fix?”. Understanding that is an absolute must. It requires digging in deep. If your only motivation is money and you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, who you want to help and why, people are going to see right through that. - Have a clear visual brand (like he did from as early as his days as a college grad). - The chase for as many followers and likes as possible is a distraction. It’s not about the number of followers that you have, it’s about how much they’re sold on you and love you. ...and more. We found his story truly inspiring, and we believe you will too. We hope you enjoy your listen.

Marc Ensign is the Big Cheese at LoudMouse, a personal branding agency for speakers, authors, coaches, entrepreneurs and artists.  A musician by training, Marc dreamed of performing on Broadway. He created a strong personal “brand,” wrote articles for music industry magazines, interviewed and forged relationships with a lot of performers. As a skilled bass player, Marc eventually “got the Broadway gig,” not by touting his amazing bass playing, but by promoting his ability to imitate a wide variety of styles. Supporting, rather than competing against, other professional musicians, Marc substituted for regular Broadway show band members who, for whatever reason, needed “a night off.” His full time Broadway career ended up lasting 10 years. In 2001/2002, while working as a musician in the evenings, Marc dabbled in web design during the day. A big and lucrative assignment from American Express's Travel + Leisure Magazine turned Marc's “pajamas as business casual” web design company into a marketing agency – overnight. A decade later, he felt lost. Marc had no education in marketing, but he had a passion for it –and, in particular, for figuring out the one impossible dream a person had – and creating a marketing message and strategy to achieve it – building, for each of his clients, a “personal brand” to get them to their “Broadway.” A couple of years ago, he started LoudMouse with a mission: To change the world by empowering those who want to change the world. Marc was a breakout speaker at Hubspot's Inbound 2019 and talked about “Standing Out and Start Getting Paid: How to Build a Personal Brand They Can't Ignore.” In this interview, Marc outlines three elements for building a successful personal brand. Identity. Be clear on who you are. Communicate “who you are” in a way that really connects with people in an authentic way. Visibility. Be able to communicate the message of “who you are” with visual elements: Your font/color/ logo/ website/ social media platforms/ pictures/ headshots. These elements have to be congruent with each other – and consistent. Authority. Are you positioned as an industry expert/leader/podcaster interviewee? When people `think of your industry, regardless of size, do people think of you? Did you write the book on the most important thing or a new groundbreaking innovation? Marc authored The Groove Book: A Study in Musical Styles for Bass (2011) and Slappin': A Complete Study of Slap Technique for Bass: A Complete Study of Slap Technique for Bass (2015), both under the Mel Bay Publications imprint. He is still building his brand as a musician, while using his agency to help “small” people leverage their brands to have “big voices.” Marc can be reached on his company's website at: https://loudmouse.com/, on his personal website at: https://marcensign.com/, and on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcensign/.

Marc Ensign is a musician who played bass guitar for the hit Broadway musical, RENT. Marc is also a marketing specialist. Those outside the world of theatre may not be able to grasp just how far one is willing to go to get the gig or job one really wants. For Marc Ensign, it meant collecting Broadway Playbills and stealing a phone book from a Manhattan bus station to get leads, and, then disguising himself as a journalist so that he could interview other Broadway musicians in his field. Regardless of what it took for Marc, it worked in his favor for some serious returns. It's a fascinating, and often funny story. Todays guest entrepreneur joining us on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots podcast interview is Mr Marc Ensign, did me a huge favour, before he has even appeared on the show, by basically writing the shows introduction for me. Normally, I do all the research and spin it all together, but when you go to their linkedIn and about page and start laughing straight away, then why write the thing yourself. So in his own words "I've had a bit of a whirlwind of a career over the past 20 years that all began as a well known Broadway musician. I've always been an entrepreneur by nature. I really didn't have much of a choice as I was pretty much fired from every job I had as a kid for always insisting on doing things my way. As it turns out, companies generally don't like it when you do that…unless of course you own the company, so I started my own company. Successfully promoting my way to Broadway as a musician told me that I had a real knack for marketing, so in 2001 I picked up a copy of PhotoShop and started a website design and search engine optimization company called Sound-n-Vision. For over 11 years now I have been directly involved in the success of well over 1,000 organizations from local Mom and Pop shops to Internet startups to non-profits to Fortune 500 Companies and everything in between by helping them to develop new strategies for success using website design, search engine optimization and social media. With all of the success I have been able to achieve for my clients, I figured that it was a natural transition to share my real world experience and expertise on successful Internet Marketing strategies with people from all walks of life. Marc Ensign describes his style of writing and speaking as "Internet Marketing Without the Geek Speak" meaning that I have a gift for taking otherwise complex subjects like search engine optimization, social media marketing, blogging, increasing conversion rates and other marketing strategies and breaking them down in a way that anyone can easily understand and take immediate action on. This is a man who has found a passion where he didn't originally see that he had one? And like me, Marc also struggles with spelling the word definitely every time he types it. So has he created the skill that has led to his successful online business, by simply working harder than most at practicing his art? He has found the freedom to become more of himself Well let's bring onto the show to start joining up dots, as we discuss the words of Steve Jobs with the one and only super entrepreneur and businessman Marc Ensign
