Though the Juneteenth holiday was passed as a federal law in 2021 that derived from a lifelong dream of Fort Worth, Texas resident Opal Lee, many may not know Galveston, Texas is where Juneteenth was actually born. Juneteenth and General Order No. 3, read by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865 announcing that all slaves were free, is one of Galveston's most important historical moments. In Galveston and around the world, Juneteenth is observed with speeches and song, picnics, parades, and exhibits of African-American history and art. However, when it comes to having events at venues that were the previous grounds of slave plantations, some black people struggle with feeling offended, whereas others of the same race feel it's important to give truth to what happened in these spaces. And what about the pursuit of economic equality for African Americans and its relation to Juneteenth? With organizations like the Galveston Historical Foundation, being able to experience the live tour of their Ashton Villa "And Still We Rise" exhibit is a place where many will be surprised in knowing the bricks that the space was built with were made by slaves before June 19.  Then there's the history of Emancipation Park, a place that's said to be one of the most sacred spaces in the city of Houston. This episode focuses on the most talked about subject in today's society, preferably in the political realm...CRITICAL RACE THEORY. This week's guest is Dr. Marco Robinson, Assistant Professor of History and Assistant Director of the Ruth J. Simmons Center for Race and Justice, speaks about the origin of this subject, how it's been hijacked, how racist politicians are using scare tactics to convince and confuse people that this is about white kids hating themselves, and what we as the black community can do more of when it comes to learning our history. For those who are still confused on the matter, CRT is merely the acknowledgement of racial disparities that currently exist due to the systemic and institutional barriers that were established in this country during slavery, carried on during Jim Crow, and even exist in today's time. Fair Fight initiative, an organization that advocates for equality states that "fundamentally, CRT is an approach to holistically studying U.S. policies and institutions, with a wide focus encompassing such subjects as criminal legal, employment, housing, health care, and education, among others. In plain terms, CRT suggests that racism is part of a broader pattern in America. At the highest level, CRT posits that racism is implicitly woven into our laws, including the nature of policing and law enforcement in our communities. Drilling down to everyday life, this systemic racism impacts everything from hiring practices to home loans". Dr. Robinson spoke about how most of us don't learn most of what CRT is about until undergraduate or mostly in graduate school. For the last 2 years, politicians have been pushing the agenda of removing black history (American history) from school districts on a secondary level when kids today already are not being taught things about black history outside of Dr. King, Rosa Parks, and the civil rights movement but have made conscious decisions to remove anything that consist of the origin of slavery, how this country was really founded, and even go so far as to say racism is in the past, as if it doesn't still exist. The right wing media and politicians have made ridiculous claims that black people are trying to teach white kids to hate themselves and where they come. Dr. Robinson discussed how this subject matter is an on-going topic with a means to get to some type of resolution; where America, who claims to be the greatest country in the world without any definitive proof of it, needs to be held accountable for not living up to its own principles but it's going to take the entire black community get them to legislate laws that will allow our history in this country to be taught to all kids of all ages to prevent what has racially oppressed and marginalized us from continuing on. This is the first of many discussions on this matter and we will continue to provide the adequate information that lawmakers need to know to dismantle the racial barriers that have existed for far too long.

For a lot of universities this has meant confronting their own history with enslavement and racial segregation. Nearly two decades ago, Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) President Ruth Simmons, as president of Brown University, led the school through an historic intellectual and institutional process to know more about the role of Brown's participation in the slave trade.  What resulted was an historic accounting of university history and a model many universities seek to follow. On this episode we discuss the ongoing efforts to uncover their institutions connections of slavery and segregation with historians Drs. Looking at him now, it seems almost unbelievable to hear about his past. We talked about his hardships growing up in the North of England. He came from a dysfunctional family that moved around a lot. To say his early life was unstable is an understatement. To make things more difficult, he was a small-framed boy with a shock of bright orange hair. This only made him stand out more and he became a target for bullies. But you know what they say… What doesn't kill you makes you stronger! Sir Marco tells his story in such a way that it's impossible not to feel sorry for him. But he's found a way to turn his hardships to his advantage. The strength he exhibits comes from a place of knowing just how hard things can be. Although he's excelled professionally, that journey has been a difficult one too. Sir Marco recalls his first job selling timeshares. It's hard to imagine that the award-winning salesman, philanthropist, and best-selling author (among other things) is the same young man he describes in this episode. When he was 2 years old, Marco’s mother left Marco’s father and decided to go back to her family because Marco’s father was involved in gambling and had blown away her entire money. When Marco’s mother went back to her family, along with little Marco, her step-father thrown her out of the house and refused to shelter them. Afterward, the homeless mother and son started struggling for their survival, and meanwhile, his mother got married to a person who later on turned into a violent person. In this abusive environment Marco grew up as a traumatized and shy person, and then at the age of 15 an incident happened in Marco’s life that gave him courage to stand up against all odds of his life. Marco wanted to change his life and wanted to achieve success so badly that he worked tirelessly to build himself and his business. Determined Marco started the journey from being a salesperson and with few years, with the help of a mentor, he changed his density forever and set himself on the path of achievements one after another.  Marco says that his mentor gave him a book on sales called “bring out the magic in your mind” by Al Koran which proved as a real game-changer in his sales career.  Afterward, he built a strong reputation and received countless job opportunities from everywhere in the world.
