Her father, 98-year-old Rev. John Henry Brown, (Charlotte County, VA) a member of the 1390 Black Battalion, Civilian Conservation Corps, helped build the dams for the 1930s segregated Prince Edward Lake (Black recreation park) and Goodwin Lakes (White recreation park). The Civil Rights Acts of 1964 legally ended segregation; however, in 1986, the Park was integrated and renamed Twin Lakes. A ceremony honoring Rev. Brown was held at Twin Lakes in June 2023. Following Dr. Jubilee's production of this celebration, she had a vision to invite Dr. Opal Lee, the grandmother of Juneteenth, Fort Worth, Texas, to be the guest speaker at the 2024 Juneteenth Celebration. In collaboration with Kevin Faubion, Park Director at Twin Lake State Park, and The Friends of Twin Lakes State Park a 501(c)(3) organization, Dr. Jubilee began the uphill task of working together to bring her vision to fruition.    --- Dr. Jubilee is an Inspirational Speaker, SOUL-FULL POET/ SPOKEN WORD ARTIST, Life Coach, author, Creative Consultant, and song writer. She is an Inclusivity & Diversity Consultant through NCBI. As a renown inspirational speaker/workshop facilitator, Dr. Jubilee spreads her message of love and inclusivity.

Community organizer Daniel Banks describes the aura of a former Ku Klux Klan auditorium in Fort Worth, Texas as having “blood in the bricks.” Banks is involved with a project designed to confront the painful histories of this nation by stimulating dialogue and promoting human rights for all. Built in 1924, the intimidating 22,000-foot, imposing red-brick building once served as headquarters, both for the local chapter of the KKK, and for the entire state of Texas, where they staged marching practices, hosted minstrel shows and gathered frequently to strategize their agenda. Over 100 years later, an alliance of eight organizations will transform this structure into a cultural center and “safe space” for the very communities once terrorized by the KKK. Join us for a provocative conversation with I SEE U host Eddie Robinson as he speaks candidly with Daniel Banks. He's a founding board member of Transform 1012 N. Main Street, a Texas-based coalition of local arts, grassroots and service organizations that seeks to convert the space into a beacon of truth-telling, healing and liberation. Banks sheds light on how such a monument of hate has remained within blocks to Fort Worth's City Hall until now.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 19, 2023 is: indomitable • in-DAH-muh-tuh-bul • adjective Indomitable is a formal word used to describe something that is impossible to defeat or discourage. // Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, and honors the indomitable spirit of African Americans past and present fighting for justice, liberation, and the fulfillment of this nation's ideals. // Her spirit remained indomitable even in the face of tremendous adversity. See the entry > Examples: “In a life that has now marked 95 years in a country where she was born with every disadvantage except for the love and support of her family and her own indomitable determination to live fully for others, Opal Lee has changed her community. She has changed this state. She has changed our country. We are all better because she has been among us. … Through her life, and despite the terror visited upon her family, Ms. Opal has cherished and shared and spread the love and joy of Juneteenth whenever she could. And it is much to her credit that last year it became the country's 11th national holiday. She is celebrated now as the grandmother of Juneteenth. And it is what the nation knows of her.” — editorial, The Dallas Morning News, 2 Jan. 2022 Did you know? At five punchy syllables, indomitable is an imposing word, so it's inevitable that some are perplexed by this synonym for impregnable. But it's not so tough once you break it into parts. The prefix in- (spelled im- before b, m, and p) means “not” in an innumerable collection of English words. (How many have you counted so far?) The common suffix -able means “capable of, fit for, or worthy of.” Combine those two English affixes with the Latin verb domitare (“to tame”), and voila: indomitable. Indomitable was first used in English as a synonym of wild, describing—appropriately enough—things that cannot be tamed, but over time the wildness associated with indomitable developed into a specific kind of invulnerable strength.

Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day) is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Deriving its name from combining June and nineteenth, it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order by Major General Gordon Granger proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865 (two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued).[7] Originating in Galveston, Juneteenth has since been observed annually in various parts of the United States, often broadly celebrating African-American culture. The day was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law after the efforts of Lula Briggs Galloway, Opal Lee, and others.Early celebrations date back to 1866, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in Texas. They spread across the South and became more commercialized in the 1920s and 1930s, often centering on a food festival. Participants in the Great Migration brought these celebrations to the rest of the country. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, these celebrations were eclipsed by the nonviolent determination to achieve civil rights, but grew in popularity again in the 1970s with a focus on African American freedom and African-American arts. Beginning with Texas by proclamation in 1938, and by legislation in 1979, every U.S. state and the District of Columbia has formally recognized the holiday in some way. Juneteenth is also celebrated by the Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles who escaped from slavery in 1852 and settled in Coahuila, Mexico.

Dynamic duo, Opal Lee, 96 and her granddaughter, Dione Sims, 54 are relentless in their fight for freedom. Opal's activism started as a home school counselor in South Fort Worth, TX. Opal believed that “access to information and resources is what helps us do better” and she fought hard for all children to be educated and fed.Opal joined the movement, started by the late Dr. Ronald Meyers in 1999, to influence the United States government to make Juneteenth a national holiday. She had worked since the 70's to make sure Fort Worth celebrated Juneteenth. In 2007, Opal started a local Juneteenth museum. In 2014, Dione Sims, joined her grandmother in the pursuit of freedom through her nonprofit, Unity Unlimited. She manages the local and national Juneteenth campaigns and Opal's urban farming project. Dione believes in the power of Juneteenth to bring people together to talk about the real issues facing our country.  On June 17, 2021, Opal Lee saw the fulfillment of one of her dreams. Flanked on all sides by congressional and community leaders, she witnessed President Joe Biden sign the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, the bill that made celebrating freedom from slavery a law. Opal has received three honorary doctorates. She was named 2021 Texan of the Year by the Dallas Morning News editorial board, the 2021 Unsung Hero of the Pandemic, Fort Worth 2022 Person of the Year and most recently was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She currently serves as the honorary chair and major fundraiser for the future National Juneteenth Museum. “Working together is how we get things done. Our differences aren't made to separate us.” Opal LeeConnect with Opal and Dione:Unity Unlimited: dione.sims@unityunlimited.org
