Today's guests, Lisa Colpoys and Mark Chandler, help lead the Filing Fairness Project at the Deborah L. Rhode Center on the Legal Profession at Stanford Law School. This project is an ambitious, multijurisdictional effort to modernize court filing systems, widen access to courts, and improve the administration of justice by leveraging readily available technology already used in other sectors. Mark was chief legal officer at Cisco for 20 years, leading it to become one of the most innovative legal departments in the world. After leaving the company, he teamed initially with Professor David Freeman Engstrom and Stanford Legal Design Lab leader Margaret Darin Hagan to tackle the gap between the sophisticated tools available in the corporate world and those used by legal aid organizations and self-represented litigants as they navigate the court system. Lisa, who had already been an experienced leader in legal aid for over two decades, joined the leadership team last spring. Lisa previously led Illinois Legal Aid Online, and also worked at the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts and as a consultant to the Michigan Supreme Court Justice For All Project. Today, Lisa and Mark discuss what led them to Stanford, the goals of the Filing Fairness Project, the biggest challenge the project has faced so far, and the need for additional court funding.

Tuesday is coming in hot as we talk about the very present reality of used car leasing. We also talk about the last remaining sub-$20k vehicle as well as the end of a Netflix customer experience that paved the way for streaming as we know it. Show Notes with links:Used car leasing has always been an interesting idea, but carried too many risks. It's hard enough to predict the residual value of a new vehicle, alone a 4-5 year old vehicle. But predictive analytics combined with today's wild market is helping used car leasing gain traction.Used car leasing has the opportunity to protect a lender's risk profile and support a customer in a time where affordability is a major consumer concern.Rusty West, CEO of MarketScan, believes used-car leasing can alleviate the burden of consumers taking large, high-interest loans.“If we continue to shove customers into 84-month and 96-month auto contracts, then we are going to create a difficult environment,” West says. “We must get back to what's good for the whole automotive ecosystem. Focus on getting back to a healthy transaction.”“Used-car leasing remains in the minority, but it is gaining traction. We think we figured it out. Now it's a question of getting the word out.” - Mark Chandler, Credit Union Leasing of America. As the US auto market evolves, the once common sub-$20,000 new car is nearing extinction. While SUVs and trucks dominate American choices, the compact Mitsubishi Mirage holds the title as the last car below this price point. The Mirage is the last new vehicle priced under $20,000, but Mitsubishi will be discontinuing the model over the next few yearsFive Most Affordable New Vehicles are now: Mitsubishi Mirage ($19,205), Kia Rio ($20,157), Nissan Versa ($20,763), Hyundai Venue ($23,971), and Nissan Sentra ($23,994).Remember when Netflix was just a DVD mailing service? Well, as that part of its business ends, the entertainment giant is giving a little extra love to that customer base and will send subscribers up to 10 DVDs of their choice. The final mailing will be on September 29th and current DVD subscribers can choose up to 10 extra titles to be included. Normally, customers are allowed only 8 discs.Since shipping DVDs began in March of 1998, Netflix says it has mailed out more than 5 billion discs to more than 40 million customers.Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said that running the business had become increasingly difficult as the number of customers who still rented physical movies continues to shrink. “Those iconic red envelopes changed the way people watched shows and movies at home — and they paved the way for the shift to streaming,” he said. Those discs will still have to be returned apparently, with returns accepted until October 27, 2023.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

With rapid change around supply and demand during the onset of COVID-19, the need for just-in-time tire delivery was critical, especially when economies started to open up. At the forefront of predicting and acting on these supply and demand swings was American Tire Distributors.ATD has more than 140 distribution centers across the U.S. serving a network of around 9,000 dealers. Add COVID-19 into the mix, and the company could have had a supply chain nightmare on its hands. But, with weekly meetings, data analytics and strong partnerships with manufacturers, they say it’s actually been kind of fun and exciting, from a supply chain perspective that is.In this episode of What's Treading with Tire Review, we talk with Bill Hancock, ATD's senior vice president of supply chain operations, and Mark Chandler, senior vice president of supply chain for the company. Hancock and Chandler describe how ATD has navigated supply and demand in the tire industry during the pandemic, what they’ve learned through it all and what they see needs to be improved in the tire supply chain for a more efficient future.Listen here or subscribe to What’s Treading with Tire Review:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/whats-treading-with-tire-review/id1470309726Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1GA3lp6AFo7V7EEG5awHaEGoogle Podcasts: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Iv76bs6re7unom4p76myj3cakhmTo find out more about how Hancock sees the tire industry distribution landscape of the future, read his column in Tire Review's annual State of the Industry thought leadership piece: https://www.tirereview.com/tire-industry-supply-chain-distribution-future-agility/

Johnny Mercer, government minister and former Commando, talks with brutal honesty about his childhood battles with mental illness, including severe OCD. And, with astonishing frankness, he describes his brutal and heart-breaking experiences in Afghanistan where he was witness to countless horrors, not least the death of his close friend Mark Chandler. An emotional, powerful – and for those looking for crisis lessons – useful episode. Johnny’s Crisis Cures: 1. Stay strategic: “You have your goals and they have to be realistic; but once they are set the key is to focus on those and not get distracted by the niff naff and trivia.” 2. Keep perspective: “So much is down to luck; whether it’s an accident, whether it’s your career, whether it’s war, luck has such a heavy hand to play that you have to bear everything you do in perspective.” 3. It will end: “Seize the initiative; you’re never going to be in a crisis forever... whatever you’re going through things will return to normal just stick it out.” Links: We Were Warriors – One Soldier’s Story of Brutal Combat is available via Amazon.co.uk OCD-UK: https://www.ocduk.org Tickets For Troops: https://www.ticketsfortroops.org.uk Help for Heroes: https://www.helpforheroes.org.uk Episode Notes: Johnny Mercer is the non-graduate who should never have succeeded at Sandhurst – but who went on to be one of the most combat experienced officers in Afghanistan. The non-voter who should never have got elected, but who is now a Government Minister tipped as a potential future PM. What’s more remarkable are the challenges – as both a child and adult – that Johnny has faced down. An upbringing in a strict religious household that almost, in his words, destroyed his mind. A childhood that led him to develop an extreme Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, the management of which Johnny describes as a continual ‘work in progress.’ His approach to these crises, with the support of CBT and other treatments, was to find a greater, tougher challenge to focus on. That came in his three Afghan tours during which he risked his life almost daily. But it also left him confronting visceral grief when his close colleague and friend Mark ‘Bing’ Chandler was killed instantly as they fought side by side. I found Johnny’s methods of coping in these extreme situations compelling. Accepting and embracing that luck plays such a huge part in crisis situations, understanding and accepting your limitations as well as your potential and, perhaps most powerfully, remembering always that courage is just as contagious as fear. Not all Data Scientists wear lab coats to work. Intapp's Jennifer Roberts wears a cape! On the latest episode of The Geek in Review, Marlene and Greg dive into the wonderfully geeky world of data science and its application within law firms and the legal industry. Jennifer Roberts, Manager, Strategic Research at Intapp, discusses exactly what it means to be a data scientist, and why law firms are leveraging them to help run their legal operations. When it comes to "the business of law," Roberts says this is where the results of data science steps in and shows its value. Data science can help answer questions like, "how can we predict the price of legal services?" "How can we predict the scope of a matter?" "How can we help with legal project management?" And even "how can we predict what a client's needs are?" Or, "what will these clients buy from us in the future?" Data science and analytics help uncover the facts that not all lawyers and not all legal matters are totally unique. Roberts also helps us answer those naysayers who claim that they do not have enough data, or that they have Filthy Data™. We finish our LegalWeek question of "how are you changing the legal industry" with our final four responses. This week we hear from: Michael Boggia - Lookup Damian Jeal - Hubshare Kevin O'Keefe - LexBlog Martin Goulet - Wolters Kluwer Information Inspirations For anyone following the happenings (and large fines resulting from) the EU's GDPR, Marlene thinks perhaps this is something that may make its way across the pond. In a recent Corporate Counsel magazine article entitled, "Cisco's Chief Legal Officer Expresses Support for American Version of GDPR" (subscription needed), Mark Chandler of Cisco supports the need for more regulation on privacy. Greg talks with Emily Feltren of the American Association of Law Libraries, about recent legislation submitted that might finally move PACER from behind a paywall. Marlene's second information inspiration is about "Why People Still Don't Buy Groceries Online." Americans buy almost everything online these days, so why hasn't online grocery shopping taken off? Is this one of the last "tactile" experiences that we are holding on to, or have we just not had the "aha!" moment yet with online grocery shopping experiences? The final information inspirations talks about what it really means to have access to justice. In the New York Times opinion piece, "Everyone Needs Legal Help. That Doesn't Mean Everyone Needs a Lawyer," . Look for us at the ARK Library Conference in NYC this week.
