Rudolf Stingel talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Stingel was born in 1956 in Merano, South Tyrol, Italy, and lives in New York. He explores myriad ways of making paintings and extending the idea of what painting might be. With both a love of his medium and skepticism about the possibility of creating something new from such a time-honoured discipline, Rudolf explores a range of forms of painting, from abstraction to photorealism. He emerged in the 1980s, a period in which painting was condemned to obsolescence by some prominent critics, but he met this dismissal with a tangible sense of liberation, pushing painting beyond its traditional formats and contexts into the realms of sculpture and installation, while also engaging with historical genres and with key figures and objects in art history. The result is a body of work that is simultaneously weighty in the seriousness with which it questions painting and fleet-footed in the way that it relentlessly shifts, doubles-back and invents. Stingel reflects on his constant irreverence for convention, his attempts to “crank up the volume” in his groups of paintings and installation, the subtle strain of autobiography through his work. He discusses the early influence of Pablo Picasso, the enduring impact of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and the energy given to him by close friendships with artists including Urs Fischer and Maurizio Cattelan. He talks about the impact of films by Marguerite Duras and the music of Brian Eno. In "Molto molto tanto bene" (Einaudi) Caterina Bonvicini racconta la sua esperienza a bordo delle navi delle Ong che salvano migranti in mare e in particolare narra l'incontro speciale con una bambina, il suo gemello e la madre dei piccoli. La scrittrice decide di accogliere prima la madre Chantal e la piccola Amy che ha solo cinque anni e mezzo. Poi si attiva per far arrivare in Italia anche il gemellino di Amy, rimasto inizialmente in Libia con un'amica della madre. Ma spesso chi scappa dal proprio paese, in questo caso la Costa d'Avorio, si fida delle persone sbagliate e quindi il piccolo riuscirà ad arrivare in Italia non attraverso un corridoio umanitario protetto, ma facendo la traversata del Mediterraneo. Sembra una storia a lieto fine, ma nella vita le cose sono spesso più complicate e Caterina Bonvicini ha avuto la grande capacità di restituirci in questo romanzo tutta la complessità, le contraddizioni e le emozioni che possono caratterizzare una storia come questa.Nella seconda parte parliamo di "Il tempo degli imprevisti" (Guanda) di Helena Janeczek, vincitrice del Premio Strega 2018 con "La ragazza con la Leica". Il Novecento narrato attraverso quattro racconti in cui i protagonisti sono uomini e donne realmente esistiti e che l'autrice sceglie di fotografare in un determinato momento storico che diventa quasi un momento simbolico. A incarnare lo spirito degli inizi del secolo c'è la storia di Abigaille Zanetta, maestra che arriva a Milano nel 1906, aderisce al socialismo, si batte per i diritti degli operai e delle donne e finirà in carcere. Gli anni '20 vengono rappresentati dal dottor K, ossia Franz Kafka, che si trova a Merano e pensa di essere spiato. Subito dopo ci troviamo a Venezia dove la figlia del poeta Ezra Pound viene seguita da un ragazzino con il quale era cresciuta. Infine arriviamo al 1937, alla vigilia delle leggi razziali: a Trieste c'è il giovane Alberto, ossia Albert Hirschman, destinato a diventare un grande economista.

Inaugurata lo scorso 17 settembre, nel castello di Castelbello, nei pressi di Merano in Alto Adige (che già nel 2017 ospitò un artista grigionese, Jacques Guidon) la mostra dell'artista bregagliotto Bruno Ritter sarà visitabile sino a fine mese. Ben 46 le opere di grandi dimensioni esposte. Non c'è un titolo a fare da filo conduttore ma in ogni sala Ritter ha declinato un tema: figure umane, le relazioni, l'insonnia, la lotta, la jungla.Classe 1951, originario di Sciaffusa, Ritter si è diplomato in quella che oggi è conosciuta come l'Università delle Arti di Zurigo. Ha realizzato mostre in Italia, Austria, Svizzera e Germania. La storia di Ritter è molto particolare perché, per scelta, da ormai 40 anni l'artista vive in Val Bregaglia e lavora a Chiavenna. Ed è qui, nel suo atelier al piano terra del Castello di Chiavenna, che lo ha incontrato Antonia Marsetti.

I truly never thought I would ever have to make a episode like this. I'll admit, while editing the montage section of this episode, it was quite surreal to look back on my time after moving to Italy. Living in Italy is something I always dreamed I would do, making a life in Italy for myself is a goal I can say with great joy that I've accomplished. Nearly 5 years ago I got Italian citizenship by descent and left everything behind to finally live out a dream to move to Italy. Expat life was nothing new to me, but to live in Italy full time is something that introduced me to the new particulars of what being a dual citizen expat in Italy means. I'm so grateful to be able to look at Italy for the rest of my life as my country. Even if I am not living there anymore, I will always in many ways think of Italy as home and always have a special place in my heart for Rovigo. Living in Rovigo Italy, as well as Merano has been quite special and I will never forget the wonderful friends I've made in these places. While I am saying goodbye, I should maybe correct myself... because in some ways goodbye almost seems so finite… In reality, this is see you later.
