Printing Money Episode 28: Recent M&A and More with Joris Peels, 3DPrint.com

Welcome to Episode 28 of Printing Money.  For this one Danny is joined by our own, Joris Peels (Executive Editor, 3DPrint.com). This crossover-pod is indeed quite meta-level but it's not entirely new – some months ago Danny appeared on Joris' own podcast, the 3DPOD.  We encourage you to listen to that episode as well. Episode 28 begins with an introduction to Joris, and a look at his nearly two decades in 3D printing. From Philips to Shapeways, to Materialise and Formlabs, and consulting across the industry, Joris has some reach, to say the least. Next, Danny and Joris review RAPID, the largest 3DP/AM event in the USA, which took place earlier this month in Detroit. The cautiously optimistic tone that has been 2025 was decidedly in force at RAPID, and oh by-the-way there was a noticeable presence from the Chinese brands, tariffs or not. From RAPID the conversation shifts to geopolitics, the regulatory environment, and yes, tariffs. Amongst the analysis are some great quotables to look for, including “Manufacturing itself is a weapons system,” and “Uncertainty is the new normal,” all amidst a whole lot of 3DP/AM industry food for thought. And all that is only the first half. In the second half of the episode, Danny and Joris dive into Printing Money's raison d'etre - deals and analysis! Specifically, this episode focuses on recent M&A, including coverage of the Nano Dimension-Desktop Metal-Markforged tie-up, BICO's new direction under Maria Forss, Fictiv's eye-catching acquisition by Misumi, and the trend of traditional Japanese manufacturers embracing 3DP/AM. Please enjoy Episode 28 and check out our previous episodes too. This episode was recorded April 24, 2025. Like sands through the hourglass, so is the Q2 2024 earnings season.  All of the publicly traded 3D printing companies have reported their financials, so it is time to welcome back Cantor Fitzgerald Managing Director Troy Jensen to discuss and analyze the numbers. Problematic balance sheets and challenging operating environments serve as a backdrop for some negative themes including strategic reviews, slashed operating expenses, and dwindling market capitalizations. But it's not all gloom and doom. Nikon SLM Solutions continues to experience growth, and some services and software providers performed well enough too.  And through it all, the additive manufacturing (AM) industry is still growing, so Danny and Troy point to some of the private companies where growth seems apparent. A unilateral ceasefire called by Russia has broken down within hours of coming into effect. Both the Ukrainian Defence Ministry and separatist forces say there's been shelling close to the frontline Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. President Putin ordered the thirty-six hour pause in fighting, to coincide with the Orthodox Christmas, which is celebrated in both countries. Ukraine had already rejected the truce - arguing that it could be used by Russia to reinforce its troops. NewsHour speaks to a Russian officer that defected from the army. Also in the programme: Mexico arrests drug kingpin's son; and Kevin McCarthy gains ground as US House Speaker stalemate continues. Today's episode is about the importance of having a GROWTH MINDSET vs a FIXED MINDSET and how to use take that approach to bring about positive change in your life and veterinary clinic.  Either you've got a growth mindset or you've got a fixed mindset. They were coined by Carol Dwek, an American Psychologist, about 6 years ago.  Dwek earned her PhD in Social and Developmental Psychology from Yale University. She coined the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset to describe the underlying beliefs we have when it comes to learning and intelligence.  According to Dwek, when students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. Therefore they put in extra time and effort, and that leads to higher achievement. You'll be able to recognise the three common misconceptions: "I already have it and I always will" "It's just praising and rewarding effort" "all you have to do is espouse a growth mindset and good things will happen"You'll also be able to recognise the seven differences growth vs fixed mindsetters have: A belief that intelligence can be developed Embrace challenges.  Persist in the face of setbacks – that is you have resilience – we've talked about this  before in episode 6 - it's an inner strength important to everyone in the veterinary profession. You'll view effort as the path to mastery.  You'll learn from constructive feedback (or criticism),  You'll find lessons and inspiration in the success of others, and you'll  Welcome challenges and view setbacks as an opportunity to learn and grow.Includes excerpts from Michael Jordan talking about his growth mindset + Carol Dwek - including her a few minutes from her talk at Google. Please sign and share GetVets.NZ

This time, Vancraen talks to us about some past things that he's experienced in terms of exciting moments and career highlights. Max asks him if he thought Materialise would be as successful as it is. Vancraen also talks about Materialise's Five Year Plans and reveals that, during the next one, he will be looking for a successor. We also mention that very many people at Materialise have been with the firm a very long time and that this may have aided the company's success. We talk about the market outlook for 3D printing and Materialise, as well. Vancraen mentions some interesting developments, such as Rapid Fit's adoption with fixtures and components for electric cars, medical printing advancements, and the firm's continued COVID response. We discuss flying cars and the entrepreneurial activity going on there, as well. Other topics include bioabsorbable PCL trachea implants and why Vancraen thinks that it's too soon for the company to invest in bioprinting. Vancraen discusses adding value and how Materialise has been extremely lucky as a company. He talks about disappointing customers and firing people. Max and I really enjoyed this talk a lot and Fried's thoughtful answers have a depth and humanism that really made us savor this episode.

Brussels Airport, srprs.me, de stad Antwerpen, Materialise, KdG, Torfs, … Volledige of ‘zachte’ rebranding? Dutch fashion-tech designer, Anouk Wipprecht, discusses her work and the many ways that technology and fashion are becoming one. As a successful designer and innovator in the fascinating field of fashion-tech, Wipprecht's passion is to design garments that bring together the physical and psychological. Fashion-tech is a bridge between multiple areas of study and design and is the nexus between fashion design, science and engineering, robotics, and user experience design. It seeks to lift fashion design to an experiential level, rising above simply garments to be worn for comfort or style.  With fashion as interface, Wipprecht's designs push conventional design to higher levels that interact with the surroundings and introduce considerations of expanding technology, personal space, and more. Wipprecht has formed many exciting partnerships with major companies such as Microsoft, Intel, Google, Audi, and Cirque Du Soleil, as well as the 3D printing company Materialise, as she continues to influence how we will dress in the ever-expanding technological future. Wipprecht discusses her thoughts on the ways she wants fashion to speak for those who wear it and how the technology aspects offer more opportunities for the wearer. She talks about the interesting spider dress that she created while working with Intel and details her use of the Intel Edison, a computer-on-module designed by Intel to be utilized as a development system for wearable devices. The spider dress contains sensors and moveable arms that create a more defined boundary of personal space while pushing style in a new direction.  Wipprecht describes her smoke dress, a dress that contains a small, battery-operated fog generator. The dress was unveiled at the Dutch Electronic Art Festival in Rotterdam. The famous smoke dress can produce up to a quarter hour of continuous output or 150 puffs of five seconds each, and it can react to the number of people within the general area. The innovative designer discusses her work with entertainers such as Fergie, Britney Spears, and others, and collaborations with movie studios on CGI-based movies. Wipprecht delivers an overview of the important work she is doing to help children with ADHD, such as her unicorn horn hat that contains a camera and electrodes that helps to measure brain signals and attention. She explains the process and how the camera records when brain signals indicate that the user is paying attention, which helps to further the advancement of their development. As technology continues to become part of our very existence, electronic systems can now be included in materials that allow processors and sensors to transmit and receive information. Wipprecht's technological couture is poised to lead us into the future of wearable tech.
