Finding reliable locum cover has always been one of the toughest challenges for podiatry clinics. In this episode, I speak with Hayley Uden about her groundbreaking app, HeyLucy!, which simplifies the entire process. From automated invoicing and quick payments to flexible opportunities for podiatrists, HeyLucy! is changing how we think about staffing. Tune in to hear how this app could make your professional life easier and more rewarding. Seven Key Takeaways Locuming in podiatry has lacked a centralised, transparent system. HeyLucy! connects clinics and locums directly via an easy‑to‑use app. The app automates invoicing and payroll, reducing admin stress. Locums receive payments immediately after their shifts. Flexible work options support semi‑retired podiatrists, parents coming back into the work force and podiatrists who only want to work part‑time. HeyLucy! allows podiatrists to try different clinics and regions. It's like a try-before-you-buy. The platform strengthens the profession by mobilising more practitioners. The amount of money Health NZ is spending on locum doctors to plug staff shortages is increasing and could reach $200 million this year. Checkpoint has obtained figures that show the spend on fill-ins is rising fast. A frontline doctor and the senior doctors union have said it is frustrating to see the increasing pot for temporary workers, when officials are saying money is so tight. Jimmy Ellingham reports.
How to Run Locum NP as a Business
In this first episode of a two-episode interview, host David Mandell speaks with Cory Kleinschmidt, an industry veteran in the locum tenens space. Cory shares his journey into the field, which began unexpectedly in the late 1990s when he helped develop LocumTenens.com, a job board that played a significant role in the industry's growth. He later founded Locumpedia, a digital platform dedicated to locum tenens professionals, offering resources, job listings, and insights into the industry. Cory explains the concept of locum tenens, which allows physicians to work as temporary providers in various healthcare settings, providing them with flexibility, higher earnings, and work-life balance. He highlights how the industry has evolved from a necessary staffing solution to a strategic workforce model, driven by growing physician shortages and changing work preferences. This first part of a two-episode interview also covers trends in locum tenens, including the increasing interest from younger physicians, the rising demand for specific specialties like neurology, cardiology, and psychiatry, and the impact of AI. Cory emphasizes that locum tenens is becoming an essential part of healthcare staffing, allowing doctors to explore different practice environments while mitigating burnout and financial stress. Key Insights: Locum tenens, meaning "to hold the place," originated in the Catholic Church before transitioning into healthcare staffing. The industry has grown significantly, with more physicians, especially younger ones, choosing it for career flexibility and income potential. Locumpedia is a digital platform that provides a free, centralized resource for physicians and healthcare organizations. The No-BS Guide to Locum Tenens was created to offer straightforward, unbiased insights into locum work. See https://www.locumpedia.com/. Locum tenens physicians work as 1099 independent contractors, allowing them to take advantage of tax benefits and business deductions. The demand for locum tenens is increasing due to physician shortages, burnout, and changing work preferences. Specialties such as hospital medicine, neurology, cardiology, psychiatry, anesthesiology, and radiology are currently in high demand. AI is expected to impact radiology, but the combination of AI with skilled radiologists is seen as the future rather than full automation. More doctors are using locum tenens as a way to test different work environments before committing to full-time positions. Locum tenens is becoming an essential part of modern healthcare staffing, allowing hospitals to adapt to patient demand and financial constraints efficiently. Getting out of training with no debt made a massive impact on his financial future. He expressed a huge amount of gratitude. He also said he was not financially literate and did not really learn about finances until he picked up the WCI book during residency. Between the help from his parents and becoming financially literate he was able to hit the ground running and start building his wealth. His big advice to you is before you get a paycheck, have a plan for it. Today we're diving deep into a retirement strategy that's gaining traction—we'll call it "phased retirement." Instead of the traditional abrupt transition from full-time work to complete leisure, phased retirement allows Emergency Physicians to gradually wind down their careers by transitioning to locum tenens positions. This approach offers a multitude of benefits, both financial and psychological, which we will discuss.

Now he is Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center where he provides direct patient care and teaches neurology residents on the inpatient and outpatient services. He also hosts a podcast called The Art of Medicine. And he has written a book called The Locum Life: A Physicians Guide to Locum Tenens, the definitive resource on this topic. In Part 2 we'll get much more into locum tenens work, and how he took what he learned to write The Locum Life. With that as an introduction, we will pick up where we left off with Andrew getting back into clinical medicine after a ten-year hiatus. My guest for Episode #261 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Dr. Andrew Wilner, a board-certified internist, neurologist, and epilepsy specialist. In 1982, he discovered that locum tenens was the perfect solution for achieving work/life balance as a physician and writer. Dr. Wilner has practiced locum tenens in a variety of inpatient, outpatient, academic, and community settings. He is a prolific medical journalist and author of several books, including Bullets and Brains. Currently, Dr. Wilner is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN, where he cares for patients, teaches, writes, and lives with his wife and baby boy. He's also host of the podcast “The Art of Medicine.” His latest book is The Locum Life: A Physician's Guide to Locum Tenens. In this episode, we discuss the concept of "locum tenens", a staffing solution that is steadily taking root in the world of healthcare. Locum tenens, which means "holding a place," provides medical professionals the flexibility of temporary placements in clinics or hospitals due to extended leaves or transitions between hires. Our guest for this episode, Dr. Andrew Wilner, a seasoned neurologist and epilepsy specialist, has thrived using the locum tenens approach. He gives insightful revelations about the career growth and personal satisfaction that come with adopting this method of staffing. In addition, Dr. Wilner gives an account of the human errors that can occur in healthcare settings. Using a personal tale about a mistake made during his training years, he emphasizes the necessity for checks and balances to prevent such occurrences. The discussion encourages healthcare professionals and administrations to approach healthcare provision not as invincible entities, but as humans who are prone to making mistakes. It is through such humility and acknowledgment of weaknesses that better healthcare systems can be fostered where errors are minimized and learning is continuous. Questions and Topics: How could that medication error happen? Sleep deprived Did the nurse challenge the order? More of an expectation to speak up now? A team effort to help you and help the patient? EHR risk of errors - wrong chart? New risks Human factors — 36 or even 24 hour shifts now? I don't want to sell you on Locum Tenens work. What I want to do is give you an objective peek inside the Locums world and decide for yourself if its right for you. I've done extremely well as a locum tenens recruiter by giving candid feedback to the physicians I talk with. I tell them the bad and the good. Today's episode is a compilation of clips I've shared on social media from some of the interviews I've done with the doctors I've worked with. Locum tenens is not right for everyone, but it might be a very good fit for people who: More control over their schedule and skill set. Want to work part time or phase into retirement. Value flexibility and freedom over title/status/money. Want to pay off bills in between residency & fellowship. Sick of hospital politics and 60-80 hours work weeks. Every year, The Spectator travels the country in search of the best and boldest new companies that are disrupting their respective industries. In a series of five podcasts, we will tell you about the finalists for 2023's Innovator of the Year Awards, sponsored by Investec. The awards winners will be announced in a prize ceremony in November. In the West, the UK was the first country to create a national health service, free at the point of use. And yet 75 years on, it's rare that a winter goes by without some kind of crisis in the NHS. And that's not even to mention the impact of the pandemic on waiting lists. In this category we're looking at innovations in the British health industry. How can we do things better? Many finalists in this category are relying on AI and better data collection, which can help with screening for cancer and more efficiently distributing medicines; some of them are literally inventing new technologies, patenting new materials to use in dentistry, for example, or 3D-printing personalised vitamins. Martin Vander Weyer, The Spectator's business editor, judges the awards and hosts this podcast along with three other judges: Jonny Olson, executive chair of Touchlight, a biotech start-up specialising in producing DNA at speed; Nicholas Hardie, non-executive director at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; and Michelle White, co-head of Investec's private office. The finalists in this category are: Nourished, which uses 3D printing to produce personalised vitamin supplements. Ethoss Regeneration Ltd, which has developed and patented a novel bone graft material for use in dentistry. iEthico, which has developed an AI-powered platform to optimise the distribution of medicine to tackle shortages. Locate a Locum, which has connected locum pharmacists to pharmacies in need using a digital platform. Nuclera, which enables researchers to obtain active proteins from DNA at speed. Attomarker, which uses nanotechnology to measure human biomarkers in the diagnostics process. Kheiron Medical Technologies, which uses AI for early diagnosis of breast cancer.
