Ep. 38 is the third and final episode in the mini-series all about the Me-Made-May wardrobe challenge. Expanding on last week's episode about setting your own unique pledge, today we'll flip it and discuss super-simple, basic pledges that still offer heaps of learning potential. If you're just not sure what your wardrobe goals are, or you don't have the headspace for anything complicated right now, this episode provides the solution. We also hear from previous podcast guests, Amy Dyce and Judith Staley, who also chose simple pledges for their challenges. They talk about the wealth of takeaways they accrued from this approach, and give us some thought-provoking insights about applying the lessons learnt. Support the podcast over on Patreon! You can still learn A TON about your wardrobe, and make great strides in getting closer to the wardrobe you dream of by setting yourself a very simple, standard pledge. Picking an uncomplicated formula, as long as it is challenging but do-able for you, will still give you a chance to learn and play about throughout the month. A great way to start is by finding out exactly what you have. Try to find a chunk of time to get all your handmade items out in one place. Then cast your mind back a week or so, or pay attention to what you're wearing for a few days. How many handmade items do you wear on average already? Then set your simple pledge by choosing to up the frequency slightly, or by altering how you wear them. For example, if you usually wear a handmade item twice a week, pledge to wear a handmade item three or four times a week. Or if you usually wear two handmade items each day, make it three! OR keep wearing two handmade items each day, but make sure you wear a different outfit combination each day. Find Amy Dyce on Instagram @craftandthrift HERE and find the website HERE. This is the second episode in the mini-series all about the Me-Made-May wardrobe challenge. If you're not sure how to get the most from taking part in MMM, this episode offers a guide to crafting your own, tailor-made pledge. Included are examples of a variety of unique pledges that might click with you, and lead you to heaps of useful lessons and insights about yourself and your wardrobe needs. We also get to hear from two previous podcast guests and repeat MMM participants, Rebecca Evans-Merritt and Meg Grandstaff. Both offer their own fascinating perspectives, experiences and takeaways from their own challenges, and offer advice for new participants. Support the podcast over on Patreon! To pick a useful challenge for you, the first step is to get a handle on how your relationship with wardrobe currently stands. If you can find the time, get all your self-made items out and have a look at what you've got. Also have a think about how often you tend to wear handmade items already, and which ones see the most action. Think back to what you wore the past week. How many items were made by yourself? By looking at what you've got AND by thinking about what you usually wear already, you'll get some clues for a suitable pledge. Is there a sticking point that you're already well aware of? For example, you feel happiest in a dress, but rarely wear them. Or you have a whole load of clothes made from vibrant prints, but you're not sure how to incorporate them into an outfit. Remember, the main point of the challenge is to wear your handmade items more and/or in different ways. So with that in mind, hopefully you will start to get some ideas for a pledge that will push yourself slightly out of your comfort zone to allow yourself to learn and grow. Me-Made-May is a popular annual wardrobe challenge that helps participants improve their relationship with their handmade wardrobe. It also gives you the opportunity to learn lots of useful lessons that will inform your making going forwards. Episode #36 is a deep dive into the challenge that I inadvertently created thirteen years ago. Whether you've already heard of MMM, have taken part in the past, or it's entirely new to you, this episode will help you decide if you want to step up to the challenge this year, and how to get the maximum benefit from it if you do! Support the podcast over on Patreon! What is Me-Made-May? MMM is a wardrobe challenge that helps you improve your relationship with your handmade items. It can also teach you what to make (and not make) in the future! What isn't Me-Made-May? MMM isn't a making challengeMMM isn't a photo challengeMMM isn't a competitionMMM isn't about having heaps of handmade clothes So who is MMM for? The challenge is for anyone with at least one handmade item that wants to make improvements to their wardrobe and how they feel about it. How do I take part? You will need to intentionally wear your handmade items more and/or in different ways throughout May 2022. Have a think about the handmade items you own, how often you already wear them, and perhaps if there are any areas of your relationship with your wardrobe that you already know could use some improvement. Then set your own pledge outlining the specifics of your challenge before 1st May. There's a fun pledge formula that you can use, it goes: “I (insert name or username) pledge to wear (insert specifics of your pledge) for throughout May 2022” You can keep this entirely to yourself, tell friends and family, or share this on social media: whatever you wish.
It's the sixth episode of the Check Your Thread podcast, and the second episode featuring parts of the great conversation I had with Amy Dyce. Last week Amy shared heaps about her small business, Craft & Thrift. In today's episode, the conversation moves from running a sustainability-minded business, to running a sustainability-minded life! We discuss ways to share eco habits, the realities of eco-guilt and how making sustainable choices can get murky. Amy also talks about the ways she uses sewing to save her money and how thrifting has made sewing viable for her. Amy also explains how sewing and knitting became a gateway for her to become more aware of social injustice and other political issues, and reflects on the importance of acknowledging and checking your own privilege. The Australian Sewing Guild is about to launch #memademonday in October. This is a challenge to showcase what you've sewn while you've been in social isolation. Every year a similar challenge #memademay is fairly similar and runs everyday in May. The ASG October challenge on the 4 Mondays in October is your chance to showcase your sewing projects on instagram and on facebook. Make sure you note the pattern used, fabric used, any details about the project and use #memademonday and #australiansewingguild. You might enjoy this challenge and take us Memademay next year. Go on!

Episode 4 of the Very Serious Crafts Podcast brings a discussion of the 100 Days Project, Me Made May, and what happens when good ideas come along at the wrong times. Show notes: https://www.veryseriouscrafts.com/show-notes
Zoe Edwards, the creator of Me-Made-May, is on the podcast! We talk about sewing for kids, sustainability, and a decade of blogging. We also cover everything you need to know about the Me-Made-May challenge!
In this episode we have a special interview with Eric Lutz, publisher of RIB magazine, which we recorded at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival in March. We've been holding on to this interview for a while, but since the second issue of RIB will be hitting shops in early June, this seems like a good time to share the audio with you. We've also got a quick update on our WWKIP day event on 10th June at the Village Haberdashery and what's making us happy these days! Make Happy – aka – What we’re working on #MeMadeMay is still underway! Rachel is still working on the handspun socks, and started spinning up some BFL for a sweater. The Kippen Cardigan has fallen by the wayside for the moment. Last episode’s sock yarn is finished and plied and washed and waiting for a moment when I can cast on! Allison finished the crocheted tie for Harrison and not a moment too soon! Everything has been all about the Joji MKAL / mystery wrap which she's knitting in the Kitsilano colourway kit put together by SweetGeorgia Yarns. She's also been sewing and working on finishing a few things, including the Cleo dungaree dress by Tilly and the Buttons that is so close to being finished! Don’t forget to show us what you’ve been working on that’s making you happy! Tag your photos on Instagram with #yitcmakehappy so we can see your projects! In conversation with RIB magazine At the Edinburgh Yarn Festival earlier this year we were lucky enough to meet the publisher of new Canadian bi-annual magazine RIB, Eric Lutz. Eric and his business partner, editor Devon Johnson have created a fantastic magazine that helps to fill an often lacking niche – men’s knitwear patterns. Their approach is to create an inspiring collection of patterns for men who knit, and for those who like to knit for them. Issue 2 of RIB will be available early next month, and we share our thoughts on the pattern previews and what we're looking forward to knitting from this issue. Wrap up Many thanks for joining us for another episode! You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio (please rate, review and subscribe!) and you'll find us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night at The Goat on the Rise between 7 and 10pm. Have a great couple of weeks and we’ll chat with you soon! Music credits (available on NoiseTrade) Ridiculously Happy (feat. Twilight Meadow) - Owl City

This Week’s Episode Before I launched the Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show, I sent out a survey to a few online friends for feedback on show topics. Kathy Kelly from the Crochetbird blog asked about ways to engage with blogging community. Thanks for the suggestion, Kathy! In this episode, I share 6 suggestions for engaging other bloggers. 6 Ways to Engage with the Blogging Community Commenting Participating in challenges Joining link parties & blog hops Finding blogger groups Attending blogger events and meetups Connecting with bloggers on other forms of social media Each of these different ways of engaging has its own benefits and challenges. Deciding which ways work best for you will depend on your goals. 1) Commenting Commenting on other blogs is a great way to engage with bloggers. Unfortunately, due to spam, trolls, malware, etc., some bloggers don’t allow comments or have so much security to cut through that it makes commenting near impossible. Include a link to your blog in the comment form, and, if appropriate, include a specific link to a post that’s relevant. When possible, include a substantive comment. Try not to include links within the comment unless they are highly relevant to the discussion and/or you already know the blogger. (The best analogy I’ve heard about this is that including links in the comment is like a party guest jumping up in the middle of dinner to shout, “Come on over to my house for dinner instead!”) 2) Participating in challenges There are several types of popular blog challenges, including: Daily blogging challenges DIY challenges, like Me Made May or the Seamless Pledge. Yarn-related challenges, like Knit Picks’s 52 Weeks of Dishcloths. Blog improvement challenges, like ProBlogger’s 31 Days to Building a Better Blog or the Ultimate Blog Challenge. You can join in a current group challenge, or follow along with another blogger’s personal challenge, or work through an old challenge. Challenges can help you improve or diversify your blogging skills while engaging with other bloggers. 3) Joining link parties & blog hops Link parties and blog hops are organized activities that take place on a regular basis. A host (or hosts) write a blog post and participants can add links to their blog post directly in to the post. Link parties come and go so ask for recommendations or use search to find a party. Each link partu has its own culture and rules. Generally speaking, you are expected to visit several of the other posted links and comment. It’s often the norm to visit every blogger who comments on your blog as well. 4) Finding blogger groups You can find blogger groups on every social media platform, so choose a setting where you feel comfortable. Some of these groups are private or secret, so you can discuss some of your blogging concerns more privately. Others are public. Most of these groups combine elements of blog support (discussions about tech issues, posting ideas, etc.) with cross-promotion. Some are open to all bloggers and others are focused on specific types of bloggers. Some groups you may want to consider are: Blogging, The Blog Hub, French Blogs, and Self-Hosted WordPress on Ravelry. Facebook groups with the words “blogging,” “bloggin,” or blogger in the title. HubSpot shared a list of 20 LinkedIn Groups Every Marketer Should Join. You can also click these links to find LinkedIn groups with blogging or blog as keywords. There are also blogging communities for specific cultural or social groups. You can also ask your fellow blogger friends for recommendations or see which groups they promoted on their blogs. 5) Attending blogger events and meetups In person meetups and events can be a great way to connect with bloggers. Events can be the places to introduce yourself to a blogger with a large following or finally get to meet your online friends face-to-face. She Owns It: Celebrating Supporting & Connecting Women Entrepreneurs has a great list of events, most of which are relevant to bloggers, here. If you live in or near a major metropolitan area, you can probably find a local group of bloggers via MeetUp.com or Craigslist. You can also engage with other bloggers at yarn industry events, like The National NeedleArts Association trade shows. You can meet bloggers from your region through local or regional fiber events. You can find a calendar of such events here on Knitter’s Review. Large events may include workshops or other training opportunities that can help you improve your blog. Face-to-face meetings, especially the larger events, may involve more costs. Some very large events can be overwhelming for introverts. 6) Connecting with bloggers on other forms of social media Most bloggers have a presence on other forms of social media. You can engage bloggers on whatever platforms you are mutually involved in, including Ravelry, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Pinterest. Engage authentically with the bloggers you follow by commenting, sharing/reTweeting their posts, and writing feedback via social media. It’s nice to include links when you can (though, for space reasons, that can be a challenge on Twitter!) Some blogger groups have their own hashtag. For example, Blogs by Latinas and Latina Bloggers Connect use #LatinaBloggers. Using a hashtag can help other bloggers in your group identify your Tweets to share and comment. Before you engage with other bloggers… Consider why you want to engage with bloggers. Are you trying to improve your own blogging? Groups might be best for you. Do you want to monetize your blog or become a pro blogger? Events and meetups might be best for you. Are you looking for new blogs to follow? Link parties/blog hops and challenges might be best for you. Do you want to increase your following? Commenting, link parties/blog hops, challenges, and connecting with bloggers on social media may be the best way. You may find that just one, or a combination of these ways works well for your goals, comfort level, time restrictions, and budget.
