New tension in US-Israel relations: Analysis with journalist Sam Sokol

This week, Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy led a bipartisan US congressional delegation to Israel, a delegation that included Maryland's Democratic Congressman Steny Hoyer. McCarthy addressed the Knesset, Israel's Parliament, and indicated that he might soon invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address the US Congress. This is in stark contrast to President Joe Biden, who has so far refused to extend an invitation to Netanyahu to visit the White House since the Prime Minister put together a far-right coalition government that returned him to power last year. Israel is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its founding, and reeling from a level of internal discord that the young country has never before encountered. Netanyahu is pushing radical reorganization of the judicial system which would greatly diminish the authority of Israeli courts. Mass protests over the past many weeks have forced the proponents of the judicial overhaul to pause their efforts for the moment, but the crisis is far from being resolved. For an update on the situation in Israel, and perspective on Vladimir Putin's posture against the Jews in Ukraine, we turn to Sam Sokol, a reporter for Haaretz, and the author of Putin's Hybrid War and the Jews:  Antisemitism, Propaganda, and the Displacement of Ukrainian Jewry.  Sam Sokol joins us on Zoom from New York. Sam Sokol will be speaking about his book and the current situation in Israel on Wednesday night (May 3) at 7:00 at Beth Am Synagogue in the Reservoir Hill neighborhood of Baltimore. 'On Juneteenth': Annette Gordon-Reed's joyful ode to Emancipation

Midday

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2022 48:31

(This conversation was originally broadcast on June 18, 2021) Tom's guest on this archived edition of Midday is the author and historian Annette Gordon Reed. She is best-known for her study of Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson. Her book, The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family, won sixteen book prizes, including the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Her latest book is a beautiful peroration on the meaning of the holiday known as Juneteenth, which marks the anniversary of a significant historical event: on June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, declaring that all slaves were free, two months after General Robert E Lee had surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S Grant in Appomattox, Virginia. Juneteenth celebrations of this belated emancipation originated among African American communities in Texas, and now take place around the country. Gordon-Reed's book is at once an homage to her home state of Texas, and a wholly original and fascinating exploration of how history and legend and myth all shape what we learn when we're young, how our understanding evolves as we grow older, and how social dynamics inform the evolution of societal understanding. Professor Reed writes with erudition and grace, authority and humility, weaving a touching personal memoir into the stark reality of a harsh historical record. Her book is called On Juneteenth.  Annette Gordon Reed joined Tom on Zoom from her home in New York. They spoke just a few days before President Biden signed a congressional bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Because this conversation was recorded earlier, we can't take any calls or comments. ____________________________________ Here's a list of some local public events happening this weekend in observance of Juneteenth: The historic Hosanna School Museum hosts the Annual Upper Bay Juneteenth Festival in Darlington on Saturday from 12-6pm. Hosanna School Museum was the first of three Freedmen's Bureau schoolhouses erected in Harford County.   The building was used as a school, community meeting place and church. Today we continue our series of Conversations with the Candidates with Baltimore City State’s Attorney, Marilyn Mosby. She is running for re-election in the Democratic primary that takes place on the 26th of this month. Early voting begins on Thursday. She is opposed by two other candidates, Ivan Bates and Thiru Vignarajah. The winner of the primary will run unopposed in the general election. Marilyn Mosby drew international attention when she indicted six Baltimore police officers in the police-custody death of Freddie Gray in 2015. None of those indictments resulted in a conviction, but Ms. Mosby points to a 95% conviction rate to date for her office overall. The State’s Attorney’s office prosecuted more than 41,000 cases last year. In addition to the violence that rocked Baltimore following the funeral of Freddie Gray, the city's police department has been in nearly constant turmoil since Marilyn Mosby was elected in 2014. There have been four police commissioners in the past 3 1/2 yrs. The city and the police department are under a consent decree with the Department of Justice. And eight members of the elite Gun Trace Task Force were convicted of running an extensive criminal enterprise. The leader of the GTTF was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Wednesday. Of the more than 2000 criminal cases associated with the convicted officers, the State's Attorney's office reports that 220 cases have already been dismissed. Ms. Mosby oversees a staff of 400 employees -- including more than 200 attorneys. Her annual salary is the highest of any Baltimore City official. She received a Presidential Scholarship from Tuskegee University where she graduated with a BA in Political Science. She holds a law degree from the Boston College Law School. She is 38 years old. She is married to 40th District Delegate Nick Mosby, and they live in Reservoir Hill with their two daughters. Tom's conversation with Ms. Mosby, like all his previous interviews with candidates in the June 26 primary, is Live-Streamed on WYPR's Facebook page. In the second and third segments of the show, we also take listener calls and comments.Visit our Conversations with the Candidates page to listen to all our interviews with the contenders for Baltimore City State's Attorney, Governor, Baltimore County Executive and other key seats in the June 26th Maryland primary.

In this podcast:Sandtown-Winchester is the West Baltimore neighborhood where the late Freddie Gray was arrested last April, and it’s where he grew up. It's within District 7 of the Baltimore City Council, and that’s the focus of today’s show. The 7th District is central-west Baltimore City -- Sandtown, Hampden, Reservoir Hill, Matthew Henson, Walbrook, Druid Heights, Ashburton. Today, we offer interviews with six of the Democratic candidates campaigning to replace Nick Mosby, who decided to run for mayor this year instead of re-election to his council seat. 1:54: David McMillan is an official in emergency management for the city of Baltimore; he comes with an interesting family history and a desire to make the municipal government work better.21:31: Kerry Davidson is a Harvard-educated lawyer who turned a Penn North crack house into his home; he thinks the 7th District, like the city generally, is full of potential that’s being missed.44:55: Marshall Bell is a policy analyst for the City Council whose brother, Lawrence Bell, was once the council president. Marshall Bell has a criminal record from years ago and a powerful personal story that informs his candidacy.1:00:37: Shawn Tarrant is a former state delegate who served the west side in Annapolis and who says the 7th district's most pressing issues are jobs, quality affordable housing, crime and blight.1:18:46: Antonio Asa has an interesting idea about what the city could do with the hundreds of vacant houses on the sprawling west side.1:30:23: Ahmed Royalty says that, if he's elected, he will use his $66,000 annual council salary to fund programs that he thinks will improve city life.Next episode: On Monday -- one more candidate interview to offer: Richard Douglas, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Tuesday’s primary election.

In this episode of ORIGINS, we’ll take a closer look at women who have chosen farming as a career and as a way of life. According to the Maryland state census in 2012, there were 2,296 women farm operators in our state – a 20% increase from the 2002 census. We know women have always played important roles on the family farm but increasingly women are turning to farming on their own. Our first farmer is Lisa Wheeler Duff, owner of Oak Spring Farm is a small, diversified farm in Freeland, MD in northern Baltimore County. The mission of Oak Spring Farm is to provide families and the community with organic, wholesome fruits, vegetables and humanely raised eggs. Our second panelist is Alison Worman, who grew up gardening in the city of Milwaukee, and came to Baltimore to attend the Maryland Institute College of Art. She stumbled upon Whitelock Community Farm through MICA’s Urban Farming class and has been working there ever since. The farm began in 2010 when Reservoir Hill residents converted a vacant lot into an active urban farm with the help of hundreds of volunteers. Whitelock Community Farm serves as a model community based project showing that providing neighborhoods access to land and resources is a sustainable way of revitalizing urban environments and building communities. Our third farmer is Ginger Myers, who, along with her husband owns Evermore Farm, a small, family-owned and operated livestock and produce farm. Located in Westminster, Maryland, Evermore Farm raises all their animals on pasture. Ginger has over 25 years of experience in agri-business and small farm production. Ginger has worked as an agricultural marketing specialist in Maryland since 1999.

Social capital "trust among residents, strong neighborhood leaders and trusting relationships with nonprofits, schools and city agencies" is extremely important to a thriving neighborhood. Almost as tangible as housing stock or tree cover, social capital is measurable and can make the difference between a healthy neighborhood and one that struggles with crime, poverty and long-term vacancy. Jonalyn Denlinger and Dion Cartwright, who coordinate BCF's neighborhood investment programs, discuss the importance of social capital and how BCF invests in ways to build it in its two target neighborhoods: Greater Highlandtown and Reservoir Hill.
