Lilly Marsh creates blankets, shawls, and other cloth, almost exclusively from local wool. Working closely with farmers and the nearby Battenkill Fiber Mill, she gets to know not only her neighbors but the fibers they grow: the surprisingly lovely wool from East Friesian sheep raised to produce milk, the springy Dorset crosses that are popular in the region, and other fibers of the Hudson Valley Textile Network. Formerly a shepherd herself, Lilly knows how important and unique this wool is to the families who raise it. She is a full-time professional custom weaver. “I weave primarily with all local wool,” she says. “That's what I do full time, day after day after day.” The cloth that she weaves helps farms and small businesses transform their fibers into finished products that shoppers at a farmers' market can take home and enjoy. She sees her role as weaver not as the sole artistic voice directing textile production but as one link in the chain between farm and consumer. Lilly appreciates her complex, powerful looms and their ability to create dynamic cloth, but the designs that make her heart sing are the ones that bring out the best in her materials. Where many weavers gravitate toward cotton, silk, and lyocell, she finds wool yarns fascinating and nuanced. At earlier points in her textile journey, Lilly was a shepherd herself, raising a flock of Corriedales in Indiana. She earned a PhD in America Studies, focusing on the work of knitter Elizabeth Zimmermann. As she expands her studio and deepens her work with the Hudson Valley Textile Project, she says, "What else would I do with my time? This is what I want to do. If you ask me what I want to do tomorrow, I want to show up at my studio and see what else we can make. Wow, that's what I want to do." Deborah Kase Lillian always loved hats. She played dress up with her mother and grandmorthers' hats as a child. And she always loved rummaging through thrift stores to find unique hats. But it was the combination of an earlier move to Paris and her 60th birthday that convinced her to go back to school to learn the amazing craft of hat making (or millinery) late in life. In 2020 in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, she launched her own hat-making company called "Harris Pat" (which comes from a spoonerism in a Cole Porter song with the line "If a Harris Pat means a Paris Hat, okay.") As Deborah shared in this episode: "Elizabeth Zimmermann is a noted knitter and knitting teacher. And I will never forget that she said once, 'People will put something on their head for, it seems to me, two reasons. Either it keeps them warm or it makes them feel cute.' And I like my hats to make people feel attractive and pretty and cute and seductive and alluring." Click here to learn more about her work and hats. Or you can follow her and her designs on Instagram @HarrisPat.
Loes komt onmiddellijk mee in actie. (Zimmermann) Veel luisterplezier! Button/illustratie door: @mariranja

I read a note Elizabeth Zimmermann wrote when she sent a gift for our newborn son...a Baby Surprise Jacket. A Pipeliner, Linda from NH, expresses her passion for our beloved craft of knitting. I clarify the process of threading beads onto yarn for the crochet beaded bind off from last week's show. In response to Irene's question, I talk about how I organize my stash and tell a story about the era of cardboard boxes for stash storage and a teenage son. Nature Notes: John James Audubon. In Needle Notes we discuss selecting yarn for our Norwegian Sweater KAL and I ask for your input on knitting hats for a friend who is in chemotherapy. Finally we conclude with an update on Celtic Cross Pipes and Drums which is preparing for the annual Burns Supper. Musical Selection is from Shira Kammen's CD "A Celebration of Robert Burns", "Flow Gently Sweet Afton." The show is sponsored by my business: www.longaberger.com/paula
I read a long letter hand-written in green ink, with a dried piece of spaghetti, dated Dec 1, 1979 from Elizabeth Zimmermann. Plus advantages of learning to knit both Continental and English/American and the answer to the question, "Does knowing the EZ method spoil you for using other patterns?" The musical selection is a Welsh harp piece, The Ash Grove, by Cheryl Ann Fulton from her album, The Airs of Wales, in honor of Elizabeth Zimmermann's Welsh heritage. Be sure to check out the show blog to see photos of the actual letter and the dried spaghetti. www.knittingpipeline.blogspot.com

January’s project from Elizabeth Zimmermann’s book the Knitter’s Almanac is an Aran sweater. So, that is how I am beginning my year! As I worked out the design for my cardigan, I realized cabling would be a nice topic for the beginning of our knitting year together. It does feel nice to shake away the lethargy of Christmas vacation with a challenge.
The funny thing about knitting is how little things can make a huge difference in the ease of knitting and in the look of a finished project. One of the most under-utilized and misunderstood techniques is the simple i-cord, or idiot cord - a tube of 3 stitches that can be used on its own or applied to a garment in a variety of ways. I’ve given you a couple of examples, but if you would like to see i-cord used to its full potential you can refer to some of the projects in Elizabeth Zimmermann’s book Knitting Around. Better yet, watch the Knitting Glossary DVD where she gives no less than 15 useful ways to use this magical tube of knitting.
This week I want to talk about one of my all time favorite techniques – steeking. I know there are a lot of knitters who have absolutely no idea what steeking means and others who do know but are terrified of it. Let me give you an outline of how handy steeks can be for knitting in hopes of convincing you to give them a try. Knitting Around by Elizabeth Zimmermann will give you instructions for several ways to use this handy technique.
