Neurobiologists have found that when a person behaves altruistically, the pleasure centers of their brain become more active. Engaging in compassionate actions activates the areas of the brain associated with the reward system” (Source) Community Project: Neighborhood Fiber Co.'s production and community mission has outgrown its current location, and owner, Karida Collins decided to purchase a larger building in the Midway neighborhood of Baltimore. This new location offers more square footage, ADA compliant access for customers, and increased space for additional classes and workshops. The new space is under construction to bring its gas and electric utilities up to code, and improve ventilation systems so that Team NFC can more safely work with dye pigments (as well as decrease the risk of Covid infection). Once these critical renovations are completed, cosmetic construction can begin on retail store space, class spaces, and outdoor area. The vision was always to have enough space so that Neighborhood Fiber Co. could not only expand their operations but also have the kind of facility that would work for projects and educational programs with Baltimore Youth Arts as well as other youth based organizations in the area. The problem is that since this project started (and Karida invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into the new building) the costs of renovations has more than doubled. Donations to this GoFundMe will go toward construction and labor costs to create a functional workspace and a welcoming creative hub in the Midway neighborhood. The sooner Neighborhood Fiber Co. can relocate, the sooner it can operate to its full potential and fulfill its community arts mission. Take # 371 of this episode after technical difficulties. It reminded me of the episode of The West Wing where President Bartlett could not successfully pre-record his weekly radio address. In the end, he finally got through it live. Turns out, the same strategy worked for me today and I was able to record the rest of the episode in one take and did not need to edit much! Join me as a project reaches a roadblock, a long languishing project sees the light of day again, and I swatch for upcoming projects. My co-hosts make a return appearance on the show at the very end. On Monday (06/29/2020) my guest will be Karida Collins from Neighborhood Fiber Co. Karida learned how to knit immediately after finishing college, and fell in love. Hard. Enamored with knitting, she set out to create her own hand-dyed yarn business in 2006. She taught herself how to dye yarn and thus, Neighborhood Fiber Co. was born. Karida's love of saturated and vibrant colors is what gives her yarn it's signature style. Stirred by her surroundings, Karida set out to provide the world with hand-dyed yarns inspired by and named to reflect the natural beauty and diverse neighborhoods throughout the nation's capital. Since then, she has added many more colors to reflect a multitude of neighborhoods, both inside and outside of DC. Now based in Baltimore, MD, Neighborhood Fiber Co. continues to offer vibrant, one-of-a-kind colors inspired by urban landscapes. Karida is an amazing person. I hope you join us for what I know will be a great show!
Karida Collins is a small business owner based in Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to her passion for hand-dyed yarns and fibers, which she sells at her store Neighborhood Fiber Co., she is also deeply passionate about her local community. Following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the protests that erupted around the country, Karida had an idea for how to get her community involved in a big way — and the results are truly astonishing.

Jasmin is slowly working on a Knitmore Vanilla Sock, with the Cynthia variation, made out of Asfaltflickan yarn in “Plastic Pony”. She is thinking of making another Knitmore Vanilla sock. Let us know. When Knitting Attacks:(36:39) Gigi started the Vitamin D cardigan three times, used a highlighter for stitch markers in the pattern, and used a different color to highlight sleeves. Jasmin ordered the wrong stitch markers, then DIY fixed them Gigi lost a game of chicken with the Purlbreak. Review:(41:33) This week we review Firmament, Stellar Stitches For Your Next Adventure, by Hunter Hammersen (PREORDER LINK WILL BE HERE) Straw into Gold:(46:30) Jasmin PLIES! We review our 2016 achievements and have a Fibershed segment where our minds are blown by discovering that compost can help mitigate climate change. Marsha is almost finished with her #PussyHatProject hat for the Women's March that will be held in Seattle. Other than that, she has been working exclusively on her Great Poncho Adventure project. She is making the Rodeo Drive poncho from Berocco Ultra Alpaca yarn. It is getting close to finished! Kelly's Great Poncho Adventure is moving along after a mistake in the colorwork meant she had to rip back about 4 inches of work. It was painful, but worth the effort. She has adapted the Om Shawl to three colors and is working this out of three different gray yarns from Neighborhood Fiber Co. Kelly has also been spinning. She finished plying two skeins of the endless 3-ply CVM. When combined with the bulky CVM singles she has spun, there is a total of 2.5 lbs (of the 6 lbs) that has been spun from this fiber. She also spun and plied some longwool fiber from deep in the stash (circa 2002?). She finished 6 #PussyHatProject hats and sent them (along with 4 more of her Aunt's hats) to Washington DC for the Women's March on Washington. There are 3 more to finish for the San Francisco march that she will be attending. Kelly was excited to share some work being done by Jeff Creque, the Marin Carbon Project and the Carbon Cycle Institute. She describes research done by Ryals, et al. in a paper entitled, "Impacts of organic matter amendments on carbon and nitrogen dynamics in grassland soils." If you would like to hear more about Carbon Farming and other ideas presented at the Fibershed Wool Symposium, the videos are available on the Fibershed site. If you are interested in purchasing the Climate Beneficial Cloth or making a donation for application of a cubic yard of compost, click here for more information. Marsha and Kelly will be at Stitches West on February 25 and 26. We will attend the meet-up organized by the Yarniacs and the 2 Knit Lit Chicks starting at about 1 pm on Saturday in the bar of the host hotel. We hope to see you there! If you enjoy the podcast, be sure to subscribe and share it with your friends on Ravelry, facebook, Instagram, or elsewhere!
