Descended from Hollywood royalty (his father Mickey Rooney who famously partnered with Judy Garland throughout his career) , the multi award winning choreographer Michael Rooney has been responsible for some of the most iconic moments in pop music ever including his work with Kylie (including videos for "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" and "Slow) as well as working on her groundbreaking "Showgirl" and "X" tours, collaborating with Spike Jones for MTV award winning videos for Fatboy Slim (including "Weapon Of Choice") , and the truly fabulous video for Bjork's "Its Oh So Quiet" amongst many others. As if this wasn't enough and most exciting for me is his work with the Muppets , everyone knows I'm their biggest fan! Here he talks through his introduction to dance by 'watching his father in the box (on television)" and then a baptism of fire with his first professional job under the legendary Debbie Allen dancing on the TV version of "Fame". Someone who he learned a lot from over those 4 years! I've been lucky enough to work with Michael a lot and you'll understand why I adore him so much throughout this interview. He's hard working, meticulous and a brilliant creative but he also has the warmest heart and most beautiful human. I really hope you enjoy this unique look at the moments that made him. Formed in 1983, the original line-up was Michael Rooney (vocals), Tom Rafferty (guitar), Malcolm McDonald (bass), Kevin Key (guitar), and Rhod Burnett (drums). Their first release was the self-financed "Where Are You?" single in 1984, produced by McDonald, after which they were signed by French independent label New Rose. Their first release for the label was the mini-LP Eternal Hotfire. A further single followed before Gordon left, to be replaced by Malcolm McDonald.[1] They recorded a session for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show in 1985(Don Gordon played guitar on this along with Malcolm McDonald), which was released as an EP in 1987. Rafferty left before the band recorded Sound Hole (New Rose 1986) with McDonald handling all guitar duties as the band built up a following in continental Europe, with a further album following for New Rose in 1987 (Live a Little). Gordon Goudie was recruited as rhythm guitarist in 1986. In late 1987 there was a further line-up change with Burnett and McDonald leaving, the remaining members recruiting Richard Mazda (guitar) and Paul Bridges (drums).
Celebrating CONSTANCE Ocean FM is proud to celebrate one of Sligo's most famous daughters and revolutionaries, Constance Markievicz, with the broadcast of CONSTANCE, a unique and powerful documentary drama that explores her often enigmatic and controversial life and legacy. This Hawks Well production offers a rare chance to hear Constance’s actual words and thoughts. It explores her life as artist, activist and revolutionary by combining her own prose and poetry with a magical original composition by Sligo's Michael Rooney. Written and directed by Kellie Hughes and featuring an octet of traditional Irish and classical musicians and actor Nichola McEvilly, CONSTANCE is a rich sonic experience that offers a rare insight into one of Ireland’s most iconic figures. Writer and Director, Kellie Hughes says “I found a beautiful letter to her brother Josslyn, where she tells him ‘My enemies will make a monster out of me, my friends a heroine and both will be equally wide of the truth’ . and I thought that is such a prophetic statement. She really understood how she was going to be viewed and she went for it anyway”. Almost a century on, her vision of a free Ireland with equality for all of regardless of class, gender, or religion remains an elusive but worthy aspiration. Constance Markievicz also blazed a trail in politics, becoming the first woman to be appointed as a Cabinet Minister in Ireland and indeed in all of Europe. In Ireland, fewer than twenty five women have followed in her footsteps. Listen in across the station this weekend to hear the opinions of this select group of women on Constance, life in politics and the place of women in Ireland today. Land, landscape, history, and music…Janet Harbison is one of the most well respected celebrators of the Irish Harp and Traditional Irish Music. She has had a profound influence on the harp and trad community teaching some of the most well known harp players in the tradition like Grainne Hambly, Michael Rooney, and Laoise Kelly. Her new solo album, “By Strangford Water” is a collection of Janet's compositions. There is also a companion book of the compositions on this album available on Janet's website. We discuss her relationship with Camac harps and the story behind the making of the Camac “Janet” harp, how to interpret slow airs on the harp, and other interesting topics.Janet likes to remind players that when playing a slow air, knowing the text and how you can tell the story of that song through the music is so integral to your musical interpretation. ”We have detached the music from the story. It's turning the meaningful music that connects us as a community into something totally superficial and sugary.”-Janet Harbison (on interpreting a song) Janet is so proud of her many students who have gone on to teach and perform. “To be their teacher was a privilege.” Performers and educators like Gráinne Hambly, Laoise Kelly, and Michael Rooney continue to share the tradition with a new generation of harp players. What does it mean to learn music in the tradition?“The way people are learning now, mostly is in workshops by rote. It's learning by ear, but it's not traditional. To be traditional is to start with the basics and then to evolve the arrangement yourself using a free form of ornamentation and variation and accompaniment. None of that should be present.”-Janet HarbisonJanet believes that a musician should be able to converse with and, “be in community with the [other] players otherwise “You're limiting yourself”.“It's a natural thing for a student to emulate their teachers, but it shouldn't be that they only can play what they've been formally taught, by ear or by any other means. It's about teaching somebody a language so they can speak it. And that they feel confident to commune with it with the other tradition makers. For me that's the purpose behind teaching.”-Janet HarbisonPlaying Harp in Irish Traditional Music Sessions“Harp players have a unique opportunity to do the traditional stuff in a traditional way that is still also ahead of the fashion, if you like.”-Janet Harbison On Accompanying:“It's all about dressing up and dressing down any piece of music…The tune is the story and the accompaniment is the fluff. “-Janet HarbisonSession EtiquetteJanet encourages harpists to play with the best musicians you can find, not to play in slow sessions, but go and try to stretch yourself. You don't have to play every note, but let your playing breathe and get into the feel of the music. Janet reminds us to “Watch how the musicians look at each other and the unspoken communication”. Harpists and Poets“The harpists had a partnership with the poets. The poets composed the epic verse. [The verse] would never be performed without the harper providing the emotional impact in the music of the suantraí, geantraí and goltraí.”-Janet HarbisonAccording to tradition, there are three types of Irish melody – suantraí, geantraí and goltraí. Suantraí (lullaby) was a tune that put you to sleep, geantraí caused laughter or merriment, whereas goltraí brought the listener to tears.www.livinglanguage.com/blog/Janet is passionate about training and teaching traditional Irish Harp and believes that, “Irish harp music should have a much higher profile in harp music worldwide.” LINKSJanet's Website: www.janetharbisonharp.comThe History of The Belfast Harp Orchestra: www.irishharporchestra.com/history/short-history-of-the-belfast-harp-orchestra/Janet and Grainne Hambly performing, “Bright New Morning” at The Somerset Folk Harp Festival in 2019:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSc7qcqg1KAThe Camac “Janet” Harp: www.camac-harps.com/en/harps-en/lever/janet/

GRADE A AFFORDABLE HOUSING w/ Michael Rooney | HHB PODCAST #60 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/charles-weinraub/message
This week for Kiss My Arts, 16 year old Ava Brogan from Carrick on Shannon shares her talent with us. The gifted musician talks about idolising Sharon Shannon as a toddler to graduating to the piano and eventually the harp after pester power worked it's magic on her parents in the shape of a confirmation present. Taking her first steps under the guidance of local harpist Fiachra Guihen a number of years ago, she fell in love with the music of composer Michael Rooney. She approached the Sligo based teacher, performer and award winning composer about taking lessons from him and was invited into his class. Since then as well as making huge strides in her own performance which we get to hear throughout the episode, she has also been inspired to try her hand at her own compositions on both the piano and harp. With an All Ireland and Connacht title in the Scór Ballad Group alongside Eleanor Smith, Elsie Harman, Roisin Noone, Rionach Nic Conmara already in the bag this year, she added the Connacht Fleadh Accompaniment title to her achievements this summer.
