I am honestly so excited to share this week's episode because it's one that stuck with me long after we finished recording. If you have ever faced a layoff or felt the pressure of a ticking clock, you will definitely want to tune in to this conversation! My guest for this episode, Namrata Kulkarni, is a highly skilled data architect and business intelligence engineer who came to the U.S. in 2015 to pursue her master's degree at Syracuse University. Like many immigrants, her journey has not been easy, but it has shaped her into the person whom she is today, and after eight years with the same company, Namrata was laid off while on an H1B visa, which meant that she had only sixty days to land a new role or risk losing her right to stay in the country! This is pressure which most of us cannot imagine, but what really personally struck me was how Namrata responded. She skipped the shock and jumped straight into action, choosing gratitude over resentment. In her own words, “The layoff didn't happen to me—it happened for me.” I honestly had to pause when she said that because how often do any of us reframe setbacks that way?!Listen in as Namrata opens up about the challenges of job hunting for the first time outside of her company, relearning how to interview, and wrestling with whether or not to tell her family that she had been laid off. There is also a vulnerable moment in which she talks about the well-meaning but unhelpful things people say such as “I'm so sorry” which simply don't land the way people tend to think that they do. (Speaking as someone who's been laid off more than once, I personally felt that deeply.)What is especially inspiring here is not just that she landed one job offer but TWO in a job market that is anything but stable right now, and she did it by focusing on what was in her control - preparation, mindset, and leaning on the relationships that she had built over the years. If you are facing uncertainty, dealing with a career change, and/or supporting someone who is, you will definitely take something away from this episode, and if you haven't yet, I also highly recommend that you check out or revisit episode 43 of the show in which I speak with Rebecca Reeder, a pastor-turned-AI analyst who offers yet another incredible career story! Thanks for listening and being part of these conversations!Episode Highlights: [2:02] - Namrata reveals that she has been in the data industry for almost 10 years.[4:42] - Speak from the heart, and don't expect anything back.[5:41] - Hear how, moving to the U.S. in 2015, Namrata grew independent and grateful for her journey.[8:13] - Embracing her layoff, Namrata felt gratitude, trusting her instincts and cherishing SCOR's support.[11:04] - Namrata shares how her colleagues' support affirmed her skills, inspiring her to seek new opportunities.[12:24] - I point out how the layoff was a chance for Namrata to reinvent herself.[13:13] - Thanks to support and extra preparation time, Namrata took on interviews under intense pressure.[16:20] - Hear how Namrata overcame shame and networked tirelessly.[17:45] - Refining her skills and her resume, Namrata trusted the universe while pushing through interview anxiety.[20:03] - Truly believing that she was the right fit, Namrata practiced relentlessly until confidence replaced interview anxiety.[22:40] - Namrata argues that performing well requires pursuing what truly excites and energizes you.[25:25] - Starting at Amazon feels surreal for Namrata, with her focus now on learning and effectively contributing.[26:38] - Life's serendipity often redirects plans.[28:15] - Namrata credits her network in helping her land interviews, proving that referrals and support make a difference.Links & Resources:Email Gary: gary@garydanoff.comGary Danoff LinkedInLHH LinkedInNamrata Kulkarni LinkedInWhat's Next Now! - “From Pastor to AI Ethicist”

InsTech, has launched its "State of Irish Insurtech Report 2024, to position Ireland as a global centre for insurance innovation, where industry giants and start-ups can come together to collaborate and create the next generation of insurance solutions. The findings of the new report were presented to Minister of State for Financial Services, Credit Unions and Insurance, Neale Richmond in a productive meeting on the potential for the sector. As the independent, neutral convener InsTech.ie plays a pivotal role in Ireland becoming a leader for insurance technology and insurance innovation. It champions Irish Insurtechs, supporting them to scale into international markets, by building awareness of the depth and breadth of insurance innovation emerging from Ireland. Founding members include AA, Allianz, Aviva, Axa, FBD, Irish Life, VHI, Laya, Scor, Unum and RSA/123.ie. One of the first activities InsTech.ie conducted back in 2022 was the mapping of the indigenous Insurtechs in Ireland. Each year InsTech updates this map and it has now grown to 114 Insurtechs. To coincide with the release of the latest version of the map, InsTech.ie conducted a survey of Irish Insurtechs to gain a better understanding of the landscape in Ireland and learn more about how it can support them to scale and encourage better, stronger collaboration across the ecosystem. On receiving the report Minister for State at the Department of Finance, Neale Richmond said, "Innovation in the Insurtech sector has the potential to pass on huge benefits to customers. Ireland hosts all of the world's top 10 global software companies and 11 of the top 15 global insurers. With a strong track record in both insurance and technology, Ireland has all of the elements to create a powerful cluster of insurance innovation and is a natural hub for the next wave of disruptive Insurtech firms. This InsTech report gives us a framework to explore the opportunities." On the launch of the report InsTech.ie CEO Gary Leyden said, "We have seen huge growth in the number and funding of Insurtech startups in Ireland and it has the potential to be a global centre for insurance innovation . The main finding of the survey this year is that there is an acknowledgement between incumbents and startups in the insurance sector that they can work together to a greater extent and have an increasing appetite to do so. This has the potential to deliver better experiences to consumers. " Leyden added, "InsTech.ie will be the forum to encourage greater innovation and we will be announcing more initiatives to support incumbents and startups collaborate and innovate together in the coming months." Some key findings of the survey in the report include: Background of Founders: 39% of founders came from an insurance background. Interestingly, a greater number of respondents stated that they came from a non-financial services background. Ambition: 90 percent Insurtech startups are seeking to enter into new markets. Challenges: Founders listed "resistance to change" as the main barriers to implementing technological innovations in the insurance industry. Potential for innovation: 68.7percent of stakeholders surveyed said emerging technologies (e.g., AI, blockchain) were "essential for innovation and growth." Ireland has witnessed a range of successful startup ventures, with the Irish Insurtech cluster being led by Fineos. Fast-growing companies such as Kota and DOCOsoft are also providing crucial technological solutions for the insurance industry. Working with their large incumbent members and these startups InsTech.ie aims to accelerate further collaboration and innovation in the industry. Chances are one of the thousands of courses that are participating in the program is near you. But what exactly is Tee It Forward? Well, you'll be surprised to learn that it's not just about playing the front tees to embarrass yourself in front of your friends. Barney Adams, entrepreneur, club maker, and founder of Adams Golf came up with this idea and convinced the PGA and USGA of its merit. This is part 1 of 2 in which Barney explains that it's a really good idea, despite it's name.

China's new round of financial reform is expected to focus on improving the financial system's ability to better support the country's modernization drive, with a priority on bolstering technological innovation and the broader real economy, said financial experts and executives. Also expected to be high on the agenda of the unfolding reform are intensifying financial regulation and strengthening the crackdown on violations to fend off financial risks, as well as deepening financial opening-up to improve resource allocation efficiency, they said.Their comments come at a juncture when the market eagerly waits to see how China will set the tone for the road map for future financial reform and opening-up at an upcoming vital reform meeting — the third plenary session of the 20th Communist Party of China Central Committee, which is scheduled to be held in Beijing from Monday to Thursday.Early this year, President Xi Jinping urged efforts to accelerate the building of a modern financial system with Chinese characteristics at the opening of a study session at the Party School of the CPC Central Committee (National Academy of Governance).Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, emphasized that the path of financial development with Chinese characteristics adheres to the fundamental purpose of serving the real economy and takes preventing and controlling risks as the eternal theme of financial work.Tian Xuan, associate dean of Tsinghua University's PBC School of Finance, said that one of the core objectives of China's financial reform should be building a modern financial system that efficiently serves the real economy, especially when it comes to financing innovative emerging sectors at lower costs, in order to support technological innovations and nurture new quality productive forces. He said the country's financial reform is expected to feature strengthened regulation to fend off any systemic risks, with the focus being on financial fraud crackdown in the capital market as well as on deficiencies in the supervision and governance of small and medium-sized financial institutions."Our financial markets are still developing and not yet mature. We need the government to play its role well to correct market failures," said Tian, who is also a deputy to the National People's Congress, the country's top legislature.Tian said he expects the upcoming plenary session to introduce reform measures aimed at further developing venture capital — investment funds that invest in startups for long-term growth and are among key accelerators of technological innovation.A meeting on April 30 of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, which was presided over by Xi, called for efforts to actively develop venture capital and strengthen "patient capital", or investment that generates healthy returns in the long run.The emphasis on venture capital has reflected China's broader efforts in capital market reform. China's financial system is now dominated by the banking industry, yet the capital market is seen as more capable of supporting innovation activity. This makes further capital market development an integral step for China, in order to ensure that the financial system becomes more capable of serving its modernization pursuit, experts said.In April, the State Council, China's Cabinet, released a guideline that rolled out nine measures to promote high-quality development of the capital market, drawing up a blueprint for the market and featuring an intensified crackdown on securities violations and strengthened investor protection.Wu Xiaoqiu, dean of Renmin University of China's National Academy of Financial Research, said the guideline has set the right tone for future capital market reform, urging "tough laws and harsh punishments" to stem violations and address the prominent issues of fraudulent listings and false disclosures. The compensation system for small investors affected by those malpractices and induced delistings should also be improved on both the civil and judicial fronts, Wu said.China's A-share market rallied on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rising 1.06 percent on Thursday to close at 2,970.39 points, following a policy measure issued on Wednesday to restrict short-selling.At the Central Financial Work Conference in November, Xi called for giving full play to the pivotal role of the capital market, advancing the registration-based initial public offering system and steadily expanding institutional opening-up in the financial sector.Experts also underlined the need for China to widen opening-up to strengthen the financial system's ability for resource allocation, expecting the upcoming reform meeting to call for ensuring a transparent, predictable regulatory environment for foreign investors and reinforcing the role of Hong Kong as an international financial hub.Zhang Xiaoyan, a chair professor of finance at Tsinghua University's PBC School of Finance, said she expects the country to further drive financial opening-up to attract more foreign institutional investors, whose global perspective and investment expertise will help channel more resources to technological companies with real strength.Thierry Leger, CEO of Paris-based global reinsurer SCOR, said that China's step-by-step financial opening-up has helped shape a high level of confidence, and it is important for the country to continue to build a stable regulatory environment for foreign investors.Eugene Qian, China country head of UBS and chairman of UBS Securities, said the Swiss financial giant, having benefited from China's capital market reform and opening-up, will continue to leverage its international experience and local expertise to support China's further reform in the capital market.Reporter: Zhou Lanxu, Liu Zhihua, Ouyang Shijiaresource allocation efficiency资源配置效率the path of financial development with Chinese characteristics中国特色金融发展之路market failures市场失灵

Plus, a look at the rising budget costs for clean energy tax credits in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act and what it could mean for the growth of wind, solar and electric vehicles. Allen Hall: I'm Allen Hall, president of Weather Guard Lightning Tech, and I'm here with the founder and CEO of IntelStor, Phil Totaro, and the chief commercial officer of Weather Guard, Joel Saxum. And this is your News Flash. News Flash is brought to you by our friends at IntelStor. If you need actionable information about renewable projects or technologies, check out IntelStor at IntelStor.com. Reinsurer SCOR has launched a new offshore renewable energy insurance consortium with partner Acrisure Re. The consortium increases SCOR's total deployable capacity to over 180 million dollars. SCOR says. Its technical expertise and understanding of client needs positions it as a leader in providing insurance. To the growing offshore wind industry. So Phil, another insurance company hopping into the offshore market, there seems to be a lot of people putting their toes in the water at this point on offshore. 180 million is not a lot of money in that marketplace, but it does seem like people are testing the waters. Philip Totaro: It's an interesting thing. Certainly good to do with a partner. The challenge with offshore is obviously with the scale, like you're saying, 180 million and deployable. Capital is not going to really make that much of a dent in the overall global market, which is, well over, a trillion dollars in investment even at this point. The reality is that, insurers have seen a lot of losses onshore and offshore. It's good that you're getting, new companies involved. It's, score is increasing the scope of their. What they're able to address. The challenge is that, I think these kind of partnerships. Are going to be necessary moving forward because insurers and in particular reinsurers have had a really rough go of it. With some of the catastrophic losses that they faced, particularly in offshore over the years where, entire projects have had to have, the main shaft bearings replaced on the turbine or. You've had other kind of significant fleet wide issues in, in some cases. Overall, it's a good thing. It's a good deal. But it's a market that's getting tougher and tougher to get into. Joel Saxum: Yeah, the important thing to understand about the insurance market in any industrial capacity, specifically, we're talking about onshore, offshore wind here, is that you don't have an insurance company and that's your insurance. You may have an insurance company, the broker, whatever that runs the thing, but you may have 20, In an offshore win, you could have 20, 30 companies in here. So if SCOR comes in on a project, say there's, right now we talked earlier today about Dogger Bank A. Dogger Bank A is going to have two, two policies there. One for construction, one's when they turn into operations. There's going to be a turn off, turn on date there. That, say, we're going to go to the policy when it is in operation, that policy may be written by, who knows, I don't know, Aeon, that's the broker, but the Aeon will have 20 different, 30 different companies behind them, each one of them taking 2%, 3%, 5 percent of that risk, there may be one lead on there, and that lead on something like an offshore wind project may only be 7. 5 percent or 10 percent or 15 percent as opposed to onshore where it may sometimes be 25, 30, 40 percent because, that asset, that wind farm may be worth 100 million or 200 million where you go to an offshore wind farm, it's worth a billion. Nobody has that kind of capital. So a lot of times the lead is someone who really knows offshore stuff Njord, they put that thing out because, the big pro,

This was the fourth session of the day at our Artemis London 2023 insurance-linked securities (ILS) market conference, held on September 5th in London, UK. Around 240 attendees enjoyed a busy day of thoughtful catastrophe bond and insurance-linked securities (ILS) focused discussion from industry experts, as well as valuable networking opportunities. This session features an expert panel discussing the need to sustain returns, across both catastrophe bonds and private ILS such as collateralized reinsurance, and ideas as to how that can be achieved. The panel discussion was moderated by: Philipp Kusche, Global Head of ILS, Howden Tiger Capital Markets & Advisory. He was joined on stage by: Florian Steiger, Head of Cat Bonds, Twelve Capital; Hervé Castella, Chief Third Party Capital Officer, SCOR; Marco della Giacoma, Portfolio Manager, Tenax Capital; and Michael Rich, Head ILS, Commodities & Environmental Strategies, K2 Advisors. The panellists spoke about the evident diversification benefits that allocations to ILS have exhibited for investors over the last few years, saying that the lack of correlation remains a key driver for investor capital inflows to the sector. They also explored how investor sentiment is evolving in the catastrophe bond space, as well as more broadly for investments into private ILS such as collateralized reinsurance arrangements. Soos in Namibië, is selfmoord 'n uitdaging in Suid-Afrika.
