We're celebrating Labor Day this week by republishing a classic episode from last year all about the television event that became synonymous with not only this holiday, but also its enigmatic (and problematic) host - Mr. Jerry Lewis. Enjoy!---It's that time of year again - Labor Day Weekend. And we all know the two most important things about that day: it's the final chance to wear white clothing (thank you, Elle Woods), and it's also when the nation used to tune into the Muscular Dystrophy Association's annual fundraising broadcast, or as it's better known, the Jerry Lewis Telethon.Rob teaches Ray about Good Jerry and Bad Jerry; the early days of Martin and Lewis, their subsequent break-up, and their unexpected reunion; how Lainie Kazan earned her Actor's Studio stripes while singing Barry Manilow; Joan Crawford's questionable poetry choices; and why MDA eventually disassociated itself from the very man who popularized its fundraiser and championed its cause. If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. “Being a multi-hyphenate is not a disability – it's an ability. It's an advantage.” Jared Grimes is a Tony Nominated actor currently starring in Funny Girl on Broadway. His effervescent energy lights up the stage every night at The August Wilson Theatre. In this episode, his energy continues into our conversation as we discuss what being a “bag of tricks” in this industry actually means.  In this episode, we discover Grimes' road to Broadway, how he turned his ADD diagnosis into multi-hyphenation, inspirations, getting people in power to understand the multi-hyphenate, and we chat about how tap opened up his eyes to the art of multi-hyphenating.  “At an early age I began to latch on to the idea that if you're a tap dancer, that means you can be many things. It doesn't mean that you just use your feet to connect with people or share with people. I'm looking at all my heroes and they are singing, they are acting, they are comedians, they're lindyhoppers, they're writers, they're choreographers, they do camerawork – they are behind the camera, in front of the camera – all those guys did that and I was just like wow so that's what it is to be a tap dancer. My earliest idea of what a tap dancer was, was a multi-hyphenate.”  Jared Grimes is a quadruple threat in the world of the arts where he is heavily making his mark in singing, dancing, acting, and choreographing. He received a Tony Nomination for his performance in Funny Girl on Broadway, which he is currently starring in. On numerous occasions, he has danced alongside legends such as Wynton Marsalis, Gregory Hines, Ben Vereen, Jerry Lewis and Fayard Nicholas. and also performed for Barack Obama and Ted Kennedy at the Kennedy Center. Most recently on Broadway, Jared could be seen in the Tony Award-winning production of A Soldier's Play. Grimes has toured with Musical legend, Mariah Carey, under the choreography of Marty Kudelka, and danced for artists such as Common, Salt-n-Pepa, Envogue, Busta Rhymes and the Roots. Jared's theater credits include, After Midnight on Broadway directed by Warren Carlyle, Twist directed by Debbie Allen, Babes in Arms at the Goodspeed Opera House choreographed by Randy Skinner, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes directed by John Rando at Encores and Broadway Underground directed by himself. In the world of acting, Jared is known for his recurring role of ‘Adrian' on NBC's hit show “Manifest.” He performed the lead role of ‘Jackson' in the Annapurna feature film Swing Kids and Sammy Davis Jr.'s “Birth of the Blues” on Michael Feinstein's American Songbook for PBS. Other film credits include Paramount's, The Marc Pease Experience starring Ben Stiller, New Line Cinema's Little Manhattan and Elevation Filmwork's' First Born starring Elizabeth Shue. Grimes has appeared in commercials for Coca-Cola, Subway, MTV and television shows such as CBS' “Star Search,” “Showtime at the Apollo,” ABC Family's “Dance Fever” and “The Jerry Lewis Telethon.” Learn more about your ad choices. This year’s Raise conference was moved to a virtual format; however, that did not stop our friends at OneCause from organizing an extraordinary lineup of speakers to ensure their attendees a meaningful learning experience. I was grateful for the opportunity to talk with several of their presenters last week about their presentations. As a student of nonprofit organizations for my entire career, I am always eager to talk to someone like Deb who works for one of the sector’s legacy organizations. This year the MDA is celebrating 70 years of service and retooling their annual telethon which returns after a six-year reprieve on Saturday, October 24, with host Kevin Hart. Nonprofit history buffs recall the Jerry Lewis Telethon as a tradition that raised awareness and resources for MDA’s programs. In addition to hearing about the telethon’s timely comeback, I was eager to compare notes with Deb about the MDA’s messy complexity that is inherent in any organization of such size and impact. As always, we are grateful to the support we receive from OneCause. As mentioned during the break, if you’d like to talk to a member of the Responsive team about our training programs, please reach out to start a conversation. #responsivefundraising  #unpredictable

The guys travel to their happy place, Las Vegas, and chow down at Wolfgang Puck's The Cut. The One Hit Wonder is Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. Sal confesses that he listens to YouTube videos in his car and Bob can't handle it. Sal jokes that Facebook is the rotary phone of the internet. Bob and Sal bitch about lousy Spirit Airlines and the new, lousy middle seat that's coming. Sal has a great Vegas story about winning dinner at the blackjack table. A lively discussion is held about nationwide sports books, and the continuing allure of Vegas. Sal jumps into a story about a Florida man who cut off another man's tadger for sleeping with his wife. Both guys yap about their upcoming shows. Bob whines again about Caesar's mistreatment of the guys the last time they hit Sin City. Las Vegas trivia and the Jerry Lewis Telethon are a favorite discussion. Sal has a great story about going to the AVN Awards. Sal cautions people not to retrieve your out of bounds golfball in the desert. More Las Vegas trivia. Sals upcoming shows include the Grand Casino in Vegas, Big Tommy's in Novi, MI, and the fabulous Holly Hotel. Bob is excited about his first headline gig at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle. Both guys talk about their friend Nate Fridson's gig there after a loss of power and how he did the show with no microphone. Upcoming guests include Jeff Gorman of the Indianapolis Colts, and William Dettloff, a hell of a boxing writer. Sal has a Whine list about getting pulled over for expired tabs. Bob wraps it up with an exciting announcement that The Sal and Bob Show is in the top half percent of iTunes podcasts.

In an episode first aired on Labor Day September 3rd, 2007, "Come To The Sunshine" #28 was host Andrew Sandoval's first ever Gary Lewis Telethon! The show features more than two hours of nothing but the best of Gary's criminally underrated recordings (such as selections from his great later period albums like "I'm On The Right Road Now," "Listen" and others). The show's goal was for Gary to get his critical due and never ROCK alone! Nevertheless, this irreverent program is not affiliated with the former Jerry Lewis Telethon. Three years ago, at the height of the Vegas boom, Jerry Lewis predicted that the resorts were overbuilding and would eventually smother one another. He just didn't expect it to happen so fast. Now, with the city in a world of hurt, the tough-talking, foul-mouthed comedy legend both commiserated with the current state of affairs and suggests some solutions. Steve spoke to the 84-year-old in advance of that much-cherished Labor Day tradition, the annual Jerry Lewis Telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the two talked about the mob, Steve Wynn and the current state of his career. Yes, he still has a career, and we're likely to hear a lot more from him in coming months. In banter: The R-J lawsuit campaign could hit the Strip, the Great Petcast Roadtrip, the screwy monorail directional signs and more.Web: TheStripPodcast.ComE-mail: TheStripPodcast@aol.comPhone: 702-997-3300Blog: VegasHappensHere.ComTwitter: @TheStripPodcast
