One of the aims of BRIAN is to use the information provided by you and your loved ones to enable researchers to better understand brain tumours to improve treatments and ultimately find a cure for this terrible disease. You can find out more and download BRIAN here https://askbrian.org.uk/ or through Google Play or the App StoreIf you have already downloaded BRIAN could spare a minute or two to complete a short survey on how you have found using it. As Fiachra says your feedback is really important to us in helping us make BRIAN into something that is really helpful for you. You can find the survey here https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/3Z6CFWV

Today we feature a premiere of one of our favourite young producers, Billy Spike Island, as his latest track 'Dark Horse' on Waterford label, Kriminal Records nears release. Dublin based techno producer Billy Spike Iland returns off the back of his Alien Sound Trax and 'A Tribute To You' self-release, with a track titled 'Dark Horse' for new Waterford based label, Kriminal Records. Kriminal Records is run by clubnight Subjective Series resident 'Deano', who is also one half of the techno duo, Diesekt. Shining a light on Irish talent, with a focus on the darker side of techno, trance and acid, this release is a great example of what they bring to the scene. Humans are social beings. The relationships that we create allow us to grow individually. However, building a long-term relationship with someone, be it romantic or not, inevitably comes with obstacles and challenges. When do we push for it to work, and when do we accept that it is not for us? In today's episode, relationship expert Fiachara 'Figs' O'Sullivan joins us to discuss the basics of relationship building therapy. He explains how personal development is deeply connected to how we act in our relationship with other people. We also talk about the ways we can make our relationships work through practicing empathy. If you've been looking for a sign on how to manage your relationships, then this episode will be insightful for you. Tune in to this podcast and start creating better relationships with yourself and your loved ones! 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “People's worst fights, people's biggest disconnection, (and) ongoing repetitive arguments are actually evidence of just how important they are to each other, not evidence that there's something fundamentally wrong with us.” “Are we coming to the end of this relationship? Or is this another growth opportunity?” “If you really love each other, you're going to get to a place where you scare each other.” “At the end of the day, it's not a sustainable way for the course of an entire lifetime to be beating ourselves up so that we perform our maximum capacity.” On living a life Ever Forward: “What it means to me is to continue to be honest with myself, be curious about myself, look inside, find what the real vulnerability is underneath whatever actions I'm taking, and then be willing and brave and courageous enough to share that vulnerability with the world.” About the Guest Figs O'Sullivan is a certified emotionally focused couples therapist and counselor. This week for Kiss My Arts, 16 year old Ava Brogan from Carrick on Shannon shares her talent with us. The gifted musician talks about idolising Sharon Shannon as a toddler to graduating to the piano and eventually the harp after pester power worked it's magic on her parents in the shape of a confirmation present. Taking her first steps under the guidance of local harpist Fiachra Guihen a number of years ago, she fell in love with the music of composer Michael Rooney. She approached the Sligo based teacher, performer and award winning composer about taking lessons from him and was invited into his class. Since then as well as making huge strides in her own performance which we get to hear throughout the episode, she has also been inspired to try her hand at her own compositions on both the piano and harp. With an All Ireland and Connacht title in the Scór Ballad Group alongside Eleanor Smith, Elsie Harman, Roisin Noone, Rionach Nic Conmara already in the bag this year, she added the Connacht Fleadh Accompaniment title to her achievements this summer. She's hoping to go one better than her previous best of second at the All Ireland Fleadh in a few weeks. She talks about how seeing the success of her neighbours Roisin and Ailie Blunnie in their own musical careers gave her the believe that she might be able to replicate their talents with dedication and hard work. I think you'll agree after hearing her play that she's well on her way on her very own path in the world of music.

Fiachra “Figs” O’Sullivan, an Irish born San Francisco-based dad, husband, and psychotherapist, gets real with us about the fears of showing up, being vulnerable, talking politics, and having fun - even when you have no idea how people will receive you. “Being real” with clients in a healing environment is one thing, but what does it mean to bring who you really are to the greater, public online space? Figs helps us understand that this isn’t a modern, online phenomenon: we all take these risks in our relationships when we ask others to really see who we are. Couples therapy helps individuals see and understand that they both play a role in the relationship story. Together, they can begin to create a new narrative of love and belonging. All relationships are on a continuum and we move between moments of connection and disconnection and we spend much of our time in the messy middle. Through experiences of disconnecting and reconnecting, you start to see that you fight because you mean so much to each other. The magic is in the repair, not in making sure you never fight. This is especially important for parents… What would it mean for your children to see you go from fighting to being sad to comforting each other to reconnecting each other? What an amazing way to prepare your children to have a healthy emotional life. Figs shares insights he’s gained through marriage and parenting, through poetry (you must hear him recite David Whyte’s poem “Self Portrait”), and by tuning into what really ticks him off… like people who chose “neutrality” over authenticity. We need stillness, not silence. We need people to trust to hold their stories. We build that trust when we’re able to honestly reveal what we stand for. Much of the conversation is focused on the marriage and the family, but then we look to the wider stage… How are the disconnects at the larger political level starting to influence couples? How can the work we do on our own relationships affect the wider world? We explore three main archetypes that are emerging in response to the current political climate: Bridge builders who help people with different perspectives connect so they understand that both perspectives make sense Fierce warriors ready to name injustice from whatever their perspective on what they think is right Helpers are those who will be there to care for those who are suffering Learn more about Figs' counseling and coaching practice at www.therapywithfigs.com and read his personal writing at https://medium.com/@figlet Figs is creating a new resource called Empathi.com - an online process that introduces individuals and couples to the wisdom of attachment. It’s possible to change the world by helping individuals have empathy for themselves, the people they love, and everyone they meet.

True Calling Project | Finding Purpose and Meaning In Life and Career
Fiachra O'Sullivan is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a practice in in San Francisco. Couple’s counseling is tough – a lot of therapists shy away from it – but Fiachra loves it. Fiachra is also launching Empathi.com, a free tool for couples to learn about who they are, and who they are together, from an attachment perspective. Couples will receive daily reminders or prompts that will help them continue to tend to their love and relationships. “Love matters, and because it matters so much you’re going to feel threatened in moments where it looks like that love isn’t present.” He is using a digital platform to share this information for free because he doesn't believe people should have to spend hundreds of dollars if they want to work towards greater understanding and healthier relationships. As a couples therapist, Fiachra has to do all of the things an experiential therapist does, but he also has to match people’s energy and actively become a part of the session. “There is nothing I will be able to do with a couple unless we have an alliance.” Fiachra describes himself as the typical psychotherapist cliché in that he was drawn to the field by a desire to heal his own emotional pain and suffering – he also considers this one of his greatest strengths as a psychotherapist. “The number one qualification I have to do this work is I am another wounded human being that has managed to do my own personal work so I can help other people.” Fiachra believes it is unbelievably powerful to be comfortable with who you are, warts and all, but it has taken him a long time to achieve that comfort. It helps people feel safe and contained. “The most important rule for me is that nobody gets shamed. No one will ever leave my office having felt shamed.” Fiachra is hugely influenced by Sue Johnson – the creator of Emotionally Focused Couples Training (EFT). There’s a map that allows him to keep track of where they are at nearly every moment, and “the moments where I’m not sure where we are? That’s where there’s potential magic that can happen.” Fiachra does really important work and I appreciate having the opportunity to talk about the challenges of couples therapy, why he is launching Empathi.com, and the journey that he took to discover his True Calling. Check out Empathi.com to see what Fiachra is building and head over to TherapyWithFigs.com to learn more about his practice and read his blog. In this episode, I have the pleasure of interviewing LMFT Figs O'Sullivan. In his practice, Figs focuses on three pillars for relationship work: Attachment Theory, Systems Theory, and Transformational Experiences. Figs teaches us that understanding that people's actions are driven by their own insecurities and fears is fundamental. Instead of fixating on the flaws of our partner/ex-partner, it's more beneficial to study one's own emotional responses and vulnerabilities and how to feel our feelings better. By becoming an expert on oneself and the system, one can be and attract a more emotionally evolved partner, and fight less! So many gems in this episode - dive in! Fiachra "Figs'' O'Sullivan is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, certified in Emotionally-Focused Therapy, and the founder of Empathi. He strives to interact with his clients as fellow travelers on life's journey, allowing them to easily dive deeper into their “stuff” with his down-to-earth philosophy. Figs has spent years working with frustrated couples at a crossroads in their relationship—they want to make things work but are stuck in what Figs calls their “Waltz of Pain”—which is what led him to create Empathi! Inspired by attachment theory, improvisational dance and theater, experiential psychotherapy, and EFT, Empathi provides fun, effective, and simple solutions to help couples stop fighting and snuggle more. —Website: https://empathi.com —Empathi Quiz for Couples: https://empathi.com/quiz/ —Empathi Courses: https://get.empathi.com/ —YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Empathinow —Media Page: https://empathi.com/figs-osullivan Themes: Relationships, Boundaries, Self-Worth, Self-Love, Codependency, Dating, Attachment Theory, Transformation, Conflict, Grief, Communication, Psychology 0:00:00 Intro 0:04:11 Who's the problem in the relationship? 0:08:10 How communication can be threatening 0:11:30 Three Pillars for Relationship Work: Attachment Theory, Systems Theory, and Transformational Experiences 0:18:46 The reason people get together 0:28:21 Confronted with grief - now what? 0:28:55 Changing perspective 0:37:12 Importance of using attachment theory responsibly 0:40:14 Tips for a successful relationship 0:43:37 Counterintuitive concepts in self-development and attachment theory 0:48:12 The line between personal boundaries and relationship deal-breakers 0:54:21 Opening up about feelings and concerns 1:03:08 The Complexity of Attachment and Relationships 1:06:47 The Pain of Disappointing a Loved One 1:10:16 Helping People Feel Their Feelings Better 1:13:16 Becoming an Expert for Future Relationships This episode is sponsored by: —Open: Get 30 days free by visiting https://withopen.com/CREATETHELOVE —Organifi: Use code CREATETHELOVE for 20% off sitewide at http://www.organifi.com/createthelove Contact us at podcast@markgroves.com for sponsor product support, questions, comments, or just to say hello!
