Episode 8 - Talking Energy Show - Mike Cantrell - Author | Speaker | Oil and Energy Consultant | Owner of Pivotal Strategic Solutions Pivotal Strategic Solutions(405) 206-4444 mike@mikecantrell.net Government affairs consultantRegulatory compliance consultantPublic affairs consultantStrategy consultant Mike is an entrepreneur / consultant with demonstrated history of accomplishment in the oil & energy industry as well as the Political and Public Affairs space. Skilled in coalition building, solving difficult problems, and building oil and gas companies, Mike is a strong entrepreneurial professional with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) focused in Psychology from East Central University. A 40 year industry veteran, Mike sees the oil and gas industry, at least in the conventional vertical well space, as offering the greatest return on investment in the American economy. Michael (Mike) Cantrell was born and raised in Oklahoma, where his family has strong ties to the oilfield. Cantrell's grandfather was a driller in the 1920's, eventually starting his own business in the 1950's, which Cantrell's father joined a few years later. In 1968, his father shifted into the production side of the business, where Cantrell gained hands-on experience in the field, accompanying his father in business from an early age. Cantrell attended East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma and graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. While Cantrell was, and still is, keenly interested in psychology, he wanted a career in which he could work for himself and decided to continue on the family legacy in the petroleum industry. In 1975, Cantrell started Oklahoma Basic Economy Corporation, an Ada, Oklahoma based oil and gas exploration and production company specializing in enhancing production in more mature formations, serving as President until 2000. That year, Cantrell sold Oklahoma Basic Economy Corporation and a few months later, founded Cantrell Investments LLC, an oil and gas investment company, with assets primarily in Oklahoma., Texas and Kansas. Around that time, Cantrell decided to leave his longtime home in Oklahoma and relocated to Plano, Texas, just outside Dallas. A few short years later, in 2006, he moved back to Oklahoma. In 2009, Cantrell accepted a consulting position with Continental Resources, where he was an integral part of building the company's Government Relations Division, eventually serving as Vice President of Governmental and Regulatory Affairs. While at Continental, Cantrell maintained his oil and gas interests and upon leaving the company in March 2013, shifted his focus back to Cantrell Investments. As a longtime veteran, Cantrell notes that this industry is "an exciting place to work," crediting his dedicated employees - many of whom have been with him for years, if not decades - for their team's overall success. He also points out that it is an added benefit to have assets performing for you, and in turn generating profit, even while you sleep! Even though he has no shortage to choose from, Cantrell easily considers his greatest accomplishment to be raising two motivated children - both successful in their chosen fields - who he claims are even smarter than their dad. In fact, both his children have taken a page from their father's book in some way - his daughter is a political consultant and his son a fourth generation oilman. And though each have their own, independent companies, Cantrell has also worked closely over the years on joint ventures and projects with both his father and brother. In his free time, you will most likely find Cantrell on his Harley Davidson, whether he's traveling to the corners of the United States or just taking a quick ride. Cantrell is also very active in industry organizations, and serves on the Board of Directors of: Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association, The Domestic Energy Producers Alliance, The Council for a Secure America, Citizens Bank of Ada, and is the Vice Chairman of Oklahomans for Lawsuit Reform. Additionally, Cantrell is the Chairman of the National Stripper Well Association, and is a longtime member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers. Cantrell adds that he has sincerely enjoyed working with the Alliance, saying, "I have never felt as effective in Washington D.C. as I did when accompanying Alliance leadership" to the U.S. Capitol earlier this year. Do you feel like one side of your body is stronger or weaker than the other? Perhaps some muscles are overcompensating for this and maybe it’s even affecting your breathing. This isn’t uncommon. In fact, it’s quite normal and there are systems out there to help address this. Mike Cantrell is an instructor for the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) where he helps all sorts of people gain stability and strength in their bodies. He has a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Emory University School of Medicine and uses his expertise in PRI as well as his sense of humor to break down difficult concepts of human kinetics for anyone to understand. In this interview, Mike introduces us to the PRI system. This involves recognizing that our bodies are naturally asymmetrical. This impacts everything from the way we breathe to how we perceive our environment. Once we have this knowledge we can start to purposefully breathe, move, and exercise in ways that support both sides of our bodies. Throughout this really fun conversation, Mike shares his unique perspective on many topics concerning our asymmetrical anatomy that will help anyone become more knowledgeable and comfortable in their body. Have you noticed an asymmetry in your body affecting your movements? Tell me about it in the comments on the episode page! In this episode: The natural asymmetry of the human body and why it’s important to understand it The asymmetry of the brain and why this matters The importance of fully exhaling and why so few of us truly do so Your hamstrings as some of the most important yet neglected muscles you have The integrative breath-centered PRI approach to dealing with hypermobility and ligamentous laxity How asymmetry plays out in the bodies of high-performance athletes and how to use this knowledge to keep them healthy PRI activities that you can safely try at home Quotes: “PRI is simply an institute that is crystalizing an understanding about human asymmetry. That’s the job and the role of the Postural Restoration Institute, to synthesize and collect research and data on the fact that humans are asymmetrical and that it matters.” [8:56] “What I would love to see people do is fully exhale before they decide to inhale, or fully load right before they decide to fully load left. Then we can learn ‘em how to fully load left and teach them how to go back to the right. That’s called pendular alternating lateralization.” [15:12] “The more confident you are about the science about what you’re saying, the more reliant that patient will be upon your instruction -- and then the better off you are at prescribing whatever it is you want to do.” [29:47] Links: Find Mike Cantrell online Follow Mike on Instagram | Twitter Postural Restoration Institute American Academy of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry Check out the full show notes for this episode here Urban Wellness Clinic Follow Emily & Urban Wellness on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube
Welcome to the third episode of the Postural Respiration Podcast! In this episode, I am joined by Mike Cantrell, MPT, PRC who joined Ron Hruska and James Anderson (Episodes 1 & 2) early on in teaching and presenting some of the earliest Postural Restoration coursework. After hearing about a Protonics device at a presentation in Houston, TX Mike’s interest in the theories and concepts behind the approach used by Ron Hruska at the time grew into several trips around the country following his coursework and attending several weekend lectures. Mike graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics from the University of Georgia in 1981, followed by a period in the Army as a Ranger. After this period Mike returned to school to complete his Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Emory University School of Medicine in 1989. Following graduation Mike accepted a role returning to the University of Georgia as the Physical Therapy Director, with the ultimate goal of eventually moving into private practice. While Expecting their first child, Mike and his wife decided to move to Warner Robins Georgia and start The Cantrell Center which would serve much of middle and southern Georgia and all of the surrounding communities as the first Wellness Center of its kind in the area. In this episode, Mike discusses the trials and tribulations of not only starting a practice but also the many arrows he and other initial instructors faced while presenting this newly founded material. Mike takes us through the events that led him to attend dozens of PRI courses which eventually led to his strong desire to teach and spread the message of asymmetry and power of respiration. Since becoming faculty Mike has trained for and added numerous courses to the list that he teaches, and along the way has mentored and supported numerous other PRI students on their journey. After many years in private practice Mike eventually sold his clinic and now steps through many different ‘doors’ working side by side with other PRI trained and certified professionals as well as dentists and other airway management specialists. Mike discusses how his foundation of PRI allows him to apply these concepts while walking through these various doors and professions and how he integrates the science within them.Mike now teaches Myokinematic Restoration, Postural Respiration, Impingement & Instability and Cervical Revolution for the Institute while remaining active with patient care. Mike currently practices in Macon, GA with fellow PRC, Jason Robey and Athletic Trainer Amos Mansfield. When not in Georgia Mike consults with various groups throughout the country and works side by side with Dr. Elizabeth Caughey at her practice in Atlanta. Mike enjoys spending time on his farm in Warner Robins and playing Harmonica in his Band!
