Ben had a great time talking to Kevin Curran and Mike Munro—two legends of the incredible and underrated Boston power thrash metal scene of the 1980s and 1990s. They talk about the brotherhood and musical vision behind their new super group Kingdom of Tyrants and the band's absolutely phenomenal debut album “Architects of Power.” From Ben's signature metal gushry LOL to deep dives into song development and Mike's vocal arrangements, this interview covers a lot of ground. Rather than proceed in any canned linear way, we talk about Mike's artistic development since his last record with Meliah Rage, the tour de force "Masquerade." We also explore the importance of history in Kevin's approach to song lyrics and how the timeless themes of the Guilded Age created connective tissue between each of "Architects of Power" nine tracks, including the mythological lessons of "Daedalus" and the album's epic "Ghosts of Industry." We also hear from the band's manager and videographer par excellence, Rudy Childs! Exploring the early origins of Steel Assassin and Mike's early band Speed Limit, some great stories and laughs are shared as they drink brews and talk metal past and present. Kate Hawkesby: Grant Robertson scored an own goal complaining that he needs more security

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 21, 2022 3:08

I think Grant Robertson hit something of an own goal this week complaining that he needs more security and that politicians are under more pressure these days out on the streets. People have hurled insults at him and there was a threat of a lamington being thrown. Other MPs say they don't have these issues and they consider being out and about on the streets a key part of interacting with the community. Now for Robertson, I get that he's a recognizable and familiar face, he's more likely as Finance Minister to be held responsible for a lot of the pressures facing Kiwis right now. But former Labour Party chief of staff Mike Munro even admitted on the show yesterday that Robertson may just be being a bit sensitive here. I think if he's paving the way for a 'woe is me' approach and some sympathy come election year, it's a bad move. The most common text we received yesterday was that it's a bit rich for politicians flanked by cops to be crying foul on people yelling abuse at them, when there are dairy owners and jewellery retailers literally fearing for their lives. These people are facing down a lot worse, on a daily basis, and have been for months. I mean they've got armed offenders smashing through their front doors and not a cop to be seen. Grant had a threat of a flying lamington and got the DPS to whip him out a back way to avoid it. There's also the argument other MPs have had a lot worse thrown at them over the years, stuff that actually landed, not just threats of it. Then there's Rotorua's Tamati Coffey who says he had his car scratched. He said he had to take his name and Labour branding off it. Now being in Rotorua, a city absolutely wrecked by this Government, flooded with emergency housing, gangs and reprobates, are we surprised a Labour car gets scratched? That's probably the least of the offences taking place in Rotorua right now. And then we learn yesterday that Rotorua tourism operators are so fed up, they now want the Government to fix the mess it's created. The damage it's done to 'brand Rotorua'. Fair enough too. Robertson dismissed it yesterday saying the Government had already invested a lot of money in it, that tourism was still busy for the city, and that the Government's done a lot to support the area. Not so, argue tourism operators who say the damage is long term, and the government's been too slow in its efforts to fix it. The complaints from these operators and hospitality venues have been coming a long time. Just like the complaints from CBDs and suburban dairies and liquor stores and jewellery shops and all the malls and shopping precincts around the country being increasingly targeted these days. So it's a bit rich for government ministers to dip their toes out of their cosy beehive bubble and experience a bit of how feral it is out here in the real world at the moment, and then complain they may not be able to do walkabouts. Cafes and shops have closed, people have been run out of their businesses and livelihoods, thugs rule the roost, because we have a societal problem with lack of consequences and a fundamental lack of respect. This is the New Zealand that's been created over the past few years. The real problem is the degradation of our society, our streets, our cities, our suburbs, our schools. And to just gaslight us and say it's us who need to behave better, in order to have politicians continue to walk amongst us, is to completely miss the point.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The FCC is also expected to issue climate-related standards. ✔️ The EU has become the frontrunner in implementing human rights regulations. Switzerland and Germany have passed a law requiring reporting. The US still needs to improve in addressing modern slavery issues. ✔️The SEC shows growing interest in human capital. ✔️Once the IFRS Sustainability Board puts out standards, verification and auditing will follow. ✔️ With ESG, companies can be part of the solution. Bigger names shouldn't receive the brunt of the blame as businesses of all sizes should be accountable. ✔️ ESG can be simplified with its focus: getting data accurately and reporting it in an appropriate way. ✔️ The role of compliance is to assist and advise. It helps companies understand the regulations and risks associated with doing business in certain countries. It also promotes educating teams in organizing and collecting accurate and useful information. ✔️ The environmental component is a pain point among compliance professionals. Mike Munro gives advice on how to be more open to the E in ESG: basic knowledge of issues and strong ties with environmental groups. ✔️ Embrace the true value of ESG to your organization. With the understanding of ESG, do your own research and stay curious. ✔️ ESG will continue to gain more attention in the coming years. Mike Munro has worked with global companies such as Dell Chemical, Baker Hughes, and Transocean, for more than 30 years. His last position before founding Global Compliance Management and Response (GCMR) was as Chief Compliance Officer at Odebrecht Engineering and Construction in Brazil. He joins Tom Fox on this week's episode of the ESG Report to discuss GCMR, as well as moving from compliance to ESG. ESG Is More Than Anti-Corruption Mike believes that compliance is about more than just anti-corruption issues. “It was clear that the elements and the focus of compliance programs and efforts are really applicable to a much broader area,” he tells Tom. After his work at Odebrecht ended, he decided to establish his own company to “bring what all of us have learned over the years regarding compliance programs and their value and the things that they're focused on, and make sure that they can also bring value to other areas. And so that brought me into ESG because clearly, that is an area that does need a lot of help, a lot of work.” From Compliance to ESG Tom asks Mike, “What are some of the skills you see that a compliance professional has, which really lends itself to either leading or being a part of the leadership team for a corporate ESG effort?” Mike responds that one such skill is the ability to work cross-functionally. “A company really has to bring in many different stakeholders within the company, make sure that all those stakeholders understand what the issues are, understand what they need to do, understand their role in compliance. And that is exactly what is needed in ESG,” he tells listeners. ESG covers many dimensions and requires people across the company to work together, so the compliance officer - who already has expertise in leading cross-functional teams - is well suited to take the lead. He and Tom discuss how compliance and ESG overlap and that ESG will evolve in the same way the compliance function did. “All of those things that happened with compliance programs early on,” Mike remarks, “where you started with a very basic program, and then you moved to training and then you moved to tracking and then you moved to running investigations. Those similar things need to happen with ESG.” The Culture of Safety Many companies are already doing good things - particularly in safety and environmental compliance - but they don't have a formalized ESG program, so they do not track or communicate what they're doing, which means that they don't get credit for their efforts. An ESG program  ‘allows for more of the positive story to be told,” Mike comments. Tom remarks on the culture of safety in energy companies. Everyone knows why the safety rules are important, and they follow them religiously. He and Mike agree that this is the same direction compliance and ESG need to take.  GCMR and the Future of ESG GCMR has brought together a global team of experts who can address ESG issues with the local context. “We are just absolutely focused on making sure when we provide services to a client that we are first and foremost, stressing that local issues have to be understood,” Mike points out. Tom asks whether Mike believes regulators or stakeholders will drive the evolution of ESG. It will be the financiers, Mike responds. He comments on the push in the EU for sustainability elements to have the same financial standards and the implications for companies' financial reporting.  ESG in Acquisitions GCMR has compiled a simple list of key ESG items. This is how they help companies quickly assess potential acquisitions. “Part of the value of ESG reporting is being able to tell the whole story, but I truly believe that sometimes people make this more complicated than it has to be,” Mike comments. When history becomes personal…Australia's last bushrangers - the Kenniff brothers - were Queensland's equivalent of the Kelly gang. Graduating from petty crime, horse stealing and cattle duffing, they moved on to murder.

Better Than Yesterday, with Osher Günsberg

Mike Munro is an Australian journalist and author, who rose to prominence as a part of the early line-up of the then groundbreaking TV Show 60 minutes. He went on to host the nightly magazine show “A Current Affair”, which broke some of the biggest stories of its time, before editorially turning a corner that lead him to split from the show - which he talks about in this conversation.Mike’s latest project is called “Lawless” - The Real Bushrangers, you can see it in Australia on Foxtel and NZ on Sky.He takes a forensic archaeology team back to the sites of famous last-stands of Australian bushrangers - that’s a highwayman if you’re in the US or UK. They discover some incredible things still to this day, and unpack what Australia’s romanticism of Bushrangers is. Mike himself is a direct descendent of the last bushranger hanged in Australia.A quick trigger warning, we discuss alcoholism and domestic violence as a part of Mike’s personal story - so if you want to avoid that today, just skip to about ten minutes in from the start of the interview and you should be fine.If you want to avoid the chat altogether that’s also ok, I’ll see you next week.Enjoy this conversation with Mike Munro.
