In episode 165, we're excited to welcome Evan Shapiro of Mina Foundation, a zero knowledge blockchain for a secure, private, and verifiable internet. We break down what the heck a zero knowledge proof is, why you should get excited about this emerging technology, and some of the most compelling social impact use cases of ZK proofs.--Three Key Takeaways--At their core, Zero Knowledge Proofs give individuals the ability to prove things about themselves, such as their credentials and identity, without needing to reveal private or sensitive information.Mina Protocol envisions a future where ZK Proofs are layered on top of everything on the internet that could benefit from verification – whether it be social media posts, news articles, political advertisements, videos, etc. This will ultimately help create a much safer internet free from misinformation.ZK Proofs can play a huge role in building safe digital spaces and institutions, where those participating can know, without a doubt, that everyone involved is who they say they are, and not a bot. This is increasingly important in the age of Artificial Intelligence.--Full shownotes with links available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruism-podcast-episode-165-zero-knowledge-proofs-and-the-internet-of-true-things--Support us with a Fiat or Crypto contribution--Learn more at cryptoaltruism.org/supportus--Celebrate Onchain Summer by Joining the Onchain Giving Summit!--Join us at the free, virtual Onchain Giving Summit! Kurt Hemecker brings over two decades of global business experience, including roles at the Facebook-backed Diem stablecoin project, and PayPal, to his new role as Chief Operating Officer at Mina Foundation. With their holistic zero knowledge product suite including zkApps, zkBridges, and zkOracles, Mina is positioned to become the powerhouse for privacy and security in Web3. Mina has continuously shown signs of massive potential with one of the most efficient ZK proving technologies out there, world-class teams, and unparalleled success at building a global community. Mina is the world's lightest blockchain, powered by participants. Rather than apply brute computing force, Mina uses advanced cryptography and recursive zk-SNARKs to design an entire blockchain that is about 22kb, the size of a couple of tweets. It is the first layer-1 to enable efficient implementation and easy programmability of zero knowledge smart contracts (zkApps). With its unique privacy features and ability to connect to any website, Mina is building a private gateway between the real world and crypto—and the secure, democratic future. In this episode we talk about: - what brought Kurt to crypto - the privacy in the digital age and the ethics of technology - decentralization, trust and power distribution - how MINA is different from other ZK players - we also go into the technical details of how to build on the MINA Protocol - use cases spanning DeFi, Gaming, AI, logistics and supply chain but also healthcare - the strategies to build and incentivize the MINA community Plus so much more. Blockchains are immutable record keepers, storing information about every transaction ever recorded. However, this attribute comes at a cost: as more and more transactions occur, so does the size of the record expands. In turn, the hardware requirements for running a node increase which ultimately affects decentralization. Another aspect frequently criticized is how transactions are being processed by legacy blockchains in terms of speed. For both of these aspects there is a cryptographic solution that addresses scalability: zero knowledge proofs (ZKPs). These allow one entity (prover) to prove to another entity (verifier) that a statement is true, without revealing any additional information about the process or data involved. When applied to blockchains, ZKPs improve scalability and privacy by certifying that state transitions occurred, without the need to relay the underlying information. In Part 1 of this 2-part episode, we were joined by Anna Rose, host of Zero Knowledge Podcast and founder of ZK Summit, ZK Validator and ZK Hack, and Kobi Gurkan, Head of Research at Geometry, to discuss the state of the ZK ecosystem and how this promising technology is evolving.Topics covered in this episode:Anna's background & her involvement in the ZK ecosystemKobi's background in cryptographyTrusted setups, a brief history: Plumo & AztecZK Hack(athon)The State of the ZK ecosystemHow the ZK landscape evolved: from SNARKs to STARKsTrade-offs: compatibility, security, performanceAztec & Noir DSLThe need for performance benchmarksZK L1s: Zcash, Mina, AleoEpisode links: Zero Knowledge Podcast on TwitterZero Knowledge Podcast on YouTubeThe paper Kobi mentioned (by Ariel Gabizon)Anna Rose on TwitterKobi Gurkan on TwitterSponsors: Omni: Access all of Web3 in one easy-to-use wallet! A reversal on the crypto markets over the past 24 hours saw 4% knocked off total market capitalisation, bringing combined value down to US$1.12tn. The dip comes on the back of comments from the US central bank suggesting further interest rate hikes are on the way. Bitcoin encountered low-single-digit losses and was unable to maintain the key US$24,000 level, whereas Ethereum fell back around 5% as it too was unable to sustain US$1,900. Among the day's biggest fallers were the US$1.4bn EOS blockchain and Mina Protocol blockchains, which both lost over 10% of their market capitalisations. Red candlesticks mounted across most of the large-cap blockchain networks, with Cardano, Solana, Polkadot, Avalanche and Polygon all dropping between 5% and 10%. Binance's US$50bn BNB coin performed slightly better with under 5% in losses chalked up. Total volumes across the decentralised finance (DeFi) space lost nearly 2%, bringing the figure down to US$65.1bn. Lido and Curve performed particularly poorly, having lost over 9% on the markets. CEL token was one of the few bullish cryptocurrencies, as the #CelShortSqueeze Twitter activists rallied in support of the bankrupt Celsius platform.

Cryptocurrency continued its bullish momentum on Wednesday, adding another 3.9% in the past 24 hours, bringing global market capitalisation to a monthly high of US$1.06tln. Bitcoin performed particularly well with a 6.86% rise to US$23.542, pushing its market cap close to the US$450bln barrier which could serve as a strong support line. Ethereum's momentum cooled off slightly, though it still managed to add another 3.16% on Wednesday morning, bringing its trading price to US$1,572. Large-cap network tokens continue to post solid gains on the back of Ethereum's recent bull run, with Solana up 5%, Polygon up 4.07% and Avalanche up 10.24%. But the biggest winner was the US$18bln Cardano Network, with a 10.81% rally pushing its ADA coin to a 30-day high of US$0.50. Niche blockchain offerings NEM, Mina Protocol and Waves all posted double-digital gains. It's a topsy-turvy week for Nexo; after outflanking the market on Monday and Tuesday, the crypto lender was today's biggest loser, having shed 10% in the past 24 hours. The decentralised finance (DeFi) market held steady at US$86.2bln in total value locked across all protocols.

This week, Anna (https://twitter.com/AnnaRRose) and Tarun (https://twitter.com/tarunchitra) host Tracheopteryx (https://twitter.com/tracheopteryx) and Facu (https://twitter.com/fameal), two core devs at Yearn.finance, to take an introductory dive into the past and present of Yearn. Starting from Yearn's spontaneous assembly in the Summer of DeFi (2020), Trach & Facu tell their personal stories of how they joined the project and where it got to since. The conversation then moves into the yDAO and its current “Constrained Delegation” model, the "nebulous" concept of Yearn products, the mergers, Andre Cronje's role in the project and much more. Mina is a layer-one protocol, creating a private gateway between the real world and crypto. The entire chain is around 22kb — even as it scales, thanks to zk-SNARKs, This protocol replaces the traditional blockchain with a zero-knowledge proof, ensuring a super-light and constant sized chain that allows participants to quickly sync and verify the network. And snark-powered dapps, called Snapps, allow access to verified real world data from any website for on-chain use. The ecosystem is growing fast and the mainnet is live - visit minaprotocol.com (https://minaprotocol.com/) to find out more.
