What is up everybody, welcome back to What the Truck?!? The freight recession is officially over as demand builds into the summer, but a tightening market means the old procurement playbook is completely broken. In this episode of WTT for May 1, 2026 , we sit down with Ciaran Doherty, Founder and CEO of Loadar, to expose a hard truth: the era of shipper leverage is ending. He breaks down why traditional RFP cycles are failing in a tight market and how capacity exiting and rising fuel costs are forcing a massive shift. If you are a shipper still relying on a loose-market strategy, you are going to bleed cash. Then, we uncover the silent margin killer draining fleets dry: bad routing. Ronak Amin from HERE Technologies drops in to reveal how static maps and inefficient routes are causing extra miles, wasted fuel, and blown ETAs. He brings the math to prove it, including a real-world example of how a 200-van fleet in Chicago could uncover nearly $100,000 in potential savings just by optimizing their location data. Plus, we are diving into the latest industry headlines:• The FBI is late to the cargo theft epidemic, but the industry isn't.• A Kentucky congressman is pushing the FAA to permanently shut down MD-11 aircraft.• The STB chairman and industry leaders headline the Future of Rail Symposium to discuss the supply chain rail network. “Herminio Bolaextra.

He is passionate about leveraging technology to solve complex business challenges and is dedicated to fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence within his teams. About Optym Optym, Inc. is a global leader in optimization and applied AI solutions for the transportation and logistics industry. For more than two decades, Optym has partnered with some of the world's largest trucking, airline, and rail companies to solve their most complex operational challenges. Its flagship products—including LoadAi and RouteMax—empower carriers, brokers, and fleets to maximize efficiency, increase profitability, and make smarter, data-driven decisions. Backed by deep expertise in operations research, optimization science, and machine learning, Optym builds technology that turns real-world complexity into simple, actionable workflows. Key Takeaways: The Optym Advantage: Smarter Routing, Planning, and Decision Making In "The Optym Advantage: Smarter Routing, Planning, and Decision Making", Joe Lynch and Shaman Ahuja, Deputy CEO of Optym, discuss how applied AI and optimization maximize fleet utilization and driver profitability. Optimization vs. Standard Routing: Shaman clarifies that Optym is not a turn-by-turn navigation tool. While standard routing focuses on the best path from Point A to Point B, Optym's "Decision Support" focuses on load assignment. It determines which load a driver should take next, considering all drivers and constraints simultaneously to create a holistic weekly plan for the entire fleet. Targeting the "Enterprise" Complexity: The software is specifically designed for enterprise fleets, generally starting at 200 trucks. At this scale, manual planning on whiteboards becomes inefficient. Optym solves the "utilization problem"—ensuring trucks aren't sitting idle and drivers aren't wasting hours waiting at docks—by identifying "juice to squeeze" in large, complex networks. Strategy Pivot: From TMS to Integration: Originally, Optym built its own TMS (LoadOps) to ensure data quality. However, they realized large fleets are reluctant to switch TMS providers due to operational disruption. Optym pivoted to a "Killer App" layer that integrates directly with industry standards like Trimble and McLeod, acting as a specialized intelligence layer rather than a replacement for core systems. Advanced Operational Models: Relay and "Meet & Turn": A core feature of the software is optimizing complex maneuvers like Relays (handing off trailers between drivers) and Meet & Turns (two drivers meeting at a midpoint to swap loads). By automating these schedules, fleets can keep drivers within a specific radius, allowing them to be home every night while keeping the assets moving 24/7. Bridging the "Tribal Knowledge" Gap:The industry faces a crisis as veteran planners (who "know the network in their sleep") retire. Younger, tech-savvy employees expect modern interfaces. Optym's AI captures that "tribal knowledge" and turns it into data-driven suggestions, allowing a new hire to be as productive as a 30-year veteran within a week. Proven ROI and Efficiency Gains: Shaman shares a case study of a 900-truck fleet where Optym's pilot program covered the same amount of freight using 100 fewer drivers. This represents a nearly 20% reduction in driver costs. To lower the risk for new clients, Optym offers a 5x ROI guarantee, promising to generate $5 in value for every $1 spent. Enhancing Driver Lifestyle through Predictability: Beyond the math, the software addresses the "human" element of trucking. By using AI agents to reschedule appointments based on real-time ETAs and reducing wasted "dwell time" at shippers, Optym creates a more predictable schedule. This reduces the stress and sleep deprivation that contribute to the high health risks faced by long-haul drivers. If you're planning a trip to Ireland in 2026 these tips will make planning smoother, help you avoid crowds, and maybe even save you a bit of money. Probably the most important tips are when NOT to be in Dublin, but there are some updates to European entry & exit systems that you need to know, as well as really important advice for 2027. Jody Halsted – Ireland Family Vacations and the Traveling in Ireland podcast In case you're wondering why you would want to get your Ireland travel advice from me… My name is Jody Halsted, and I am an Ireland travel advisor. I have been traveling to and through Ireland for over 23 years (!!), publish Ireland Family Vacations, host the Traveling in Ireland podcast, assist hundreds of travelers with their Ireland vacations each year and, occasionally, I also host small group tours through Ireland (I have 2 this spring so you can look forward to some live from Ireland episodes in April and May). That's a lot! But Ireland travel is my passion; and my goal -100% – is to help you have an amazing Ireland vacation. And I have quite a few ways to do that. My website, Ireland Family Vacations, is a complete resource for Ireland vacation planning – filled with information on what to do & see as well as handy tips for planning your trip and free itineraries to get your plans in motion quickly. (Don't let the name fool you! I travel through Ireland solo, with my husband, with my family, and hosting small group tours. Whatever your group size or dynamic I am able to assist!) My itinerary personalization, vacation coaching, and custom itinerary creation services help you maximize your Ireland experience, and my small group guided tours are designed to not only deliver the ‘authentic' Ireland of your dreams but also introduce you to the people and hidden places that make the country so very magical. If you love the process of planning your trip the Ireland Travel Compass walks you step-by-step through my expert process, from when to visit and how long the perfect vacation lasts, to what to see, where to stay, and even what to eat. It's basically my entire Ireland vacation planning brain laid out. On a more personal note, I have 2 daughters, now in college, who have been traveling through Ireland with me since before they could toddle and one very supportive husband (who loves it when I plan other people's vacations because it means I'm not planning my own). At Malahide Castle (It's probably time to get new family photos done)By Aoife for Flytographer; Dublin, Ireland. All rights reserved. Now that you know all about me, let's jump into what you need to know as you consider planning an Ireland vacation in 2026! This article is based on Traveling in Ireland podcast episode 320. Use the player below to listen or scroll to continue reading the article and get resource links. 2026 Ireland Travel Tips You Need Ireland Travel Rules & Regulations There are currently no restrictions in place for North Americans traveling to Ireland.Ireland travel restrictions and other requirement are found here. In Case of Cancellation Read and understand cancellation policies on everything from flights and transportation to tours and accommodations before booking. If booking with a credit card be aware of the cancellation coverage you may have with that card. I highly recommend purchasing travel insurance if you book tickets our tours that don't allow 100% refund if cancelled. And always if you are booking a tour package (and not necessarily the one the company offers). 2026 Looks like Another Busy Year from Travel to Ireland from North America Irish tourism numbers showed that tourism from Europe into Ireland was down, but numbers from North America remained steady. From my perspective things are already looking busy, especially in the months of May, late August, and September. (The shoulder season is the new high season.) More Direct Flights to Ireland in 2026 Aer Lingus, Ireland's flagship airline is adding 2 new US routes in 2026, bringing the total to 18 routes from Dublin! This is important because Aer Lingus is considered a ‘budget' carrier. And when budget carriers enter a market, US based airlines will drop rates to compete.
The first snowstorm of the season didn't just test trucks—it tested systems. We sat down with Justin Thomas, operations manager at Lazer Tow in Kansas City and part of the Cardinal Legacy Towing Group, to unpack how teams managed ETAs when hills iced over, why side streets often beat clogged interstates, and what happens when real-world experience meets structured training. From the cab to the classroom, Justin brings a rare mix of heavy haul, RGN, and rail-sector instruction to show how safer methods and sharper decisions keep people and revenue protected. We dig into the October training series that combined EV and alternative-fuel response, a one-day light-duty course, and a two-day heavy recovery program—scheduled to respect operators' weekends and, yes, a Chiefs game. The surprise highlight: competitors sharing a room, swapping numbers, and leaving with common safety standards. With strong hosting by Lazer and local sponsor support, the classes turned into a blueprint for market-wide collaboration. Justin explains what stuck, from practical rigging choices to better traffic control, and how those changes speed up scenes without cutting corners.Looking ahead, we spotlight a new three-hour leadership class aimed at frontline leads and managers who set culture on the lot and on the white line. Pairing leadership skills with updated EV protocols and field-proven heavy recovery techniques creates a balanced playbook: communicate clearly, plan smart, execute safely. We also talk instructor bench strength—why having trainers who still work real jobs keeps lessons current and honest. If you care about reducing risk, improving retention, and getting home safe, this conversation gives you next steps you can put to work tomorrow.Subscribe, share this with a shop owner or operator who needs a lift, and drop a review to help more pros find the show.
Malcolm Harris brings together three powerhouse guests who are shaping the future of trucking, supply chain, and transportation technology. First up, Kenneth Hanover, Director of North American Sales & Customer Support at Fleetguard (now operating under Atmos), dives deep into the company's Cummins-rooted heritage, its commitment to engineering-first product excellence, and how Fleetguard empowers truckers through right-to-repair advocacy, unmatched warranties, and one-stop filtration solutions. Ken also shares a fun take on how loud an 18-wheeler's horn really should be—and why truckers deserve both a squeaker and a foghorn. Next, Nidhi Gupta, Co-founder and CEO of Portcast, breaks down why visibility tech still leaves operations firefighting—and how predictive logistics, connected data, and AI-powered insights are transforming supply chains from reactive to proactive. She details real-world examples of customers preventing costly disruptions, how predictive ETAs reshape billing and cash flow, and why touchless supply chains aren't futuristic—they're inevitable. Wrapping up the show is Ronak Amin of HERE Technologies, who sheds light on one of trucking's most expensive and shockingly common problems: bridge strikes. Ronak explains why they happen, how HERE's precise commercial-grade mapping and AI help fleets avoid them, and what the future of routing intelligence looks like—especially as electric trucks enter the mainstream. He also shares leadership lessons and how fleets can adopt smarter routing before disaster strikes. What if a few workflow changes could cut your average arrival time from 44 minutes to nine and reduce secondary crashes by 30 percent? That's the lived experience industry veteran and Hall of Famer John Borowski brings to our conversation about modernizing towing operations with digital dispatch. We dig into the real reasons teams resist new tools—fear of the unknown, comfort with paper and radio, anxiety over ROI—and show how unified software turns chaos into clarity. John breaks down integrations that matter most: seamless connections with motor clubs, police calls, GPS, billing, and reporting so jobs, photos, timestamps, and signatures live in one clean record. The payoff is immediate: calmer dispatchers, fewer errors, faster ETAs, and accurate invoices. For owners watching margins, a simple per-truck subscription with no upfront fees and a free trial lowers risk while surfacing cost-per-call, profitability by account, and the data you need to negotiate smarter.Safety takes center stage. John shares how tighter dispatch, real-time tracking, and automated statuses helped DOT teams clear scenes faster and curb dangerous secondary crashes. With location visibility and dwell-time alerts, operators get an extra layer of protection and customers spend less time on the shoulder. We also tackle data security and compliance, explaining how audit-ready logs and access controls protect sensitive information while meeting agency and motor club requirements. We wrap by celebrating John's new book, Towing Through Time, and his upcoming column in Tow Professional Magazine—two more ways he's investing in the industry's future. If you're evaluating dispatch platforms or still juggling paper logs, this conversation offers a clear blueprint to scale safely and profitably. Subscribe, share with a shop owner who needs it, and drop us a review with your must-have dispatch feature.

In “Warp is The LTL Network of the Future”, Joe Lynch and Daniel Sokolovsky, the Co-Founder and CEO of Warp, discuss how Warp's technology-powered freight network is modernizing LTL logistics across the U.S. by connecting shippers, cross-docks, and carriers through a single operating system to enable flexible, efficient, and highly visible freight movement. About Daniel Sokolovsky Daniel Sokolovsky is the Co-Founder and CEO of Warp, a technology-powered freight network modernizing LTL logistics across the U.S. He grew up in the world of freight. His parents ran a courier business, so missed ETAs, late-night scrambles, and broken systems were part of daily life. By 18, he was already dispatching drivers and has been obsessed with fixing freight ever since. Before Warp, Daniel founded Jitsu, a gig economy parcel network that now moves millions of packages across the U.S. That experience showed him and Co-founder Troy Lester how broken traditional LTL freight really was: zero visibility, constant delays, and rigid systems that didn't match the pace of modern retail. Warp was born out of that frustration and built to fix it, with real-time data, predictive routing, and a connected network. Daniel brings deep operational expertise and a relentless drive to rebuild logistics from the inside out. About Warp Warp is a technology-powered freight network focused on modernizing LTL logistics in the U.S. By connecting shippers, cross-docks, and carriers through a single operating system, Warp enables flexible, efficient, and highly visible freight movement. Built by veteran logistics operators like Daniel Sokolovsky, Troy Lester, Chris Reeves and Bill Bence who saw the limitations of legacy networks firsthand, Warp is designed for real-world complexity where delays ripple, stores need replenishing fast, and freight can't afford to go dark. With real-time tracking, AI-powered routing, and a versatile national fleet of 53' carriers, box trucks, and cargo vans, Warp helps brands move freight faster, carriers operate leaner, and retailers stay stocked. Built by the people who've lived the breakdowns and decided to fix them, Warp is redefining how LTL freight works. Key Takeaways: Warp is The LTL Network of the Future In “Warp is The LTL Network of the Future”, Joe Lynch and Daniel Sokolovsky, the Co-Founder and CEO of Warp, discuss how Warp's technology-powered freight network is modernizing LTL logistics across the U.S. by connecting shippers, cross-docks, and carriers through a single operating system to enable flexible, efficient, and highly visible freight movement. The "Lived Experience" Advantage: Built by logistics industry veterans who "lived the breakdowns," this isn't a theoretical solution from a tech outsider. The company was born from a deep understanding of the real-world complexities and frustrations of freight. This operational expertise is a key differentiator. Solving Traditional LTL's Core Problems: This new, technology-powered network directly addresses the fundamental challenges of traditional LTL services. Warp provides faster, more reliable transit times and uses a simplified pricing structure that eliminates the complex freight class system and unexpected accessorial charges, leading to drastically reduced invoice issues. Real-Time Data and AI are Game-Changers: The network uses real-time tracking and AI-powered routing to solve common LTL problems. This technology allows for predictive routing and provides exceptional visibility throughout the entire journey, eliminating the "dark" periods where freight status is unknown. This data accuracy also helps to mitigate issues stemming from inaccurate shipping data from shippers. Modern Retail Needs a Modern Freight Solution: Traditional LTL systems are not equipped to handle the pace and demands of modern retail. This solution moves freight faster and ensures stores remain stocked. Damage is also very rare because freight is never stacked, which is a common practice for traditional LTL carriers that have increased freight handling. A Versatile and Connected Fleet: The company utilizes a versatile national fleet that includes 53′ carriers, box trucks, and cargo vans. This flexibility allows the network to adapt to different freight sizes and delivery needs. Driver assist and liftgates, typically extra costs, are standard for all shipments. The network also welcomes freight brokerage business. More Than Just a Carrier—A Network: The company's vision is to be "The LTL Network of the Future." It's a technology-powered network that redefines how LTL freight works, helping brands move freight faster and carriers operate leaner.
