Mindful technology use refers to a conscious and deliberate approach to how individuals interact with digital devices and online platforms. It involves being aware of the impact of technology on one's well-being, relationships, and overall quality of life. This practice encourages individuals to strike a balance between their digital and offline lives, aiming to use technology as a tool to enhance productivity, communication, and entertainment without allowing it to dominate or negatively affect their daily existence. To engage in mindful technology use, individuals often set boundaries and establish digital detox routines to minimize the time spent on screens. They may prioritize face-to-face interactions, engage in activities that promote physical and mental health, and avoid excessive consumption of digital content. Mindful technology use also involves being present in the moment and avoiding the constant urge to check smartphones or respond to notifications, allowing people to reclaim their attention and focus on more meaningful experiences. In an age of constant connectivity, mindful technology use can help reduce the negative effects of digital addiction, screen time-related health issues, and the erosion of personal privacy. It encourages individuals to take control of their digital habits, make conscious choices about their online activities, and foster a healthier and more balanced relationship with technology. This practice ultimately empowers individuals to harness the benefits of technology while minimizing its potential drawbacks, promoting overall well-being in a technology-driven world. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cbtkenya/message

Nir Eyal, Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes related to technology, sleep, and personal growth: 1. Sleep Medication Impact & Melatonin Patent: Nir and Jeremy discussed the health implications of sleep medication and highlighted the lack of regulation in the supplement industry, including melatonin products. They touched upon the significance of understanding the origin, purpose, and dosage when considering sleep supplements. They also emphasized the importance of natural sleep cycles and cautioned against reliance on sleep aids without a deep understanding of their implications. 2. Technology in Sleep Optimization and Future of Sleep Predictive Analytics: They discussed various tools to optimize sleep, including a Kindle, for bedtime reading to earplugs for undisturbed rest. They talked about tools like the Oura Ring, which provides insights on sleep quality and patterns, and the Apple Watch, which tracks and analyzes sleep metrics. They believe that the future of sleep tech lies in predictive analytics, which would offer real-time feedback on sleep quality and help people in making healthier sleep choices. 3. Inserting Friction for Mindful Technology Use: They stressed the value of creating friction to make conscious decisions about technology use. Nir shared about an experimental approach such as the NFC chip tool that limits access to certain apps during work hours, requiring extra steps to access potential distractions. They explained that adding these friction points aids in a more mindful and intentional relationship with our devices, and ensures that they serve us instead of dominating our time and attention. They also talked about the placebo and nocebo effects in relation to sleep, how a lot of sleep medications can be habit-forming, the importance of being vigilant in media consumption, and the significant effect of overstimulation in both children and adults' sleep patterns. Liza Kindred is an author, speaker & founder of "Mindful Technology". She's worked with some of the top companies fashion and tech companies like VOGUE Magazine, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Hearst Media, Time Inc, Microsoft, Cisco, Vodafone & Amazon. Liza has also appeared in the The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Financial Times, Market Watch and other publications. After spending twenty years working in fashion & technology, eventually specializing in wearable tech, Liza became alarmed by the lack of attention being paid to whether these devices were serving us... or the other way around. As a meditator for eight years, a student of Shambhala Buddhism & a reiki practitioner, she began talking about this disparity, & eventually developed the principles behind "Mindful Technology", which have been wildly well received as while nearly everyone loves technology, they also want to escape from it's grips from time to time. This is the genesis behind "Mindful Technology" the company & the #mindfultech movement. Find more info on Liza Kindred at https://www.mindfultechnology.com/lizakindred On each episode of the Technology For Mindfulness Podcast, Robert Plotkin, co-creator of the “Hack Your Mind” series at MIT, explores the intersection between the practice of mindfulness & the use of technology in the modern age.
