The so-called Crown Act was signed by Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe on July 9. Missouri became the 28th state to pass legislation that makes it illegal to discriminate based on the texture or style of one's hair.
A new report has raised concerns that Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe and his predecessor have failed to fill vacancies at the Missouri Ethics Commission. As a result, the state watchdog has been unable to investigate dozens of complaints of ethical misconduct.
Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe signed the state budget into law last week, approving more than $50 billion in spending. But he also stripped more than half a billion dollars out that had been approved by lawmakers, including for dozens of programs and projects in Kansas City.
On this week's episode of Women Speak — a segment on Northeast Newscast — hosts Northeast News Editor-in-Chief, Julia Williams and former Missouri House Representative for District 19 Ingrid Burnett sat down with Chair of Gender Equity Task Force of Kansas City Human Rights Commission Alice Kitchen to wrap up our series on women who influence policy. This marks the 10th and final episode of the women who influence policy series for Women Speak. Following this episode, this segment will introduce a new series where Burnett and Williams highlight the history of women in their fields. Throughout this episode, Kitchen delves into the Gender Equity Task Force Commission in Kansas City, how she got involved and how the commission has evolved over the years into what it is today. She discusses policies and resources the Task Force has worked on and is currently working on including hosting an upcoming listening session in October, which will include data collected from the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office on domestic violence prevention. Kitchen also shares important women in her life who have inspired and motivated her along the way. Burnett, Williams share final conversations on happenings in the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. Burnett discusses the Missouri Ethics Commission and its lack of quorum, which has remained since January when former Missouri Gov. Mike Parsons withdrew two appointed Ethics Commission Members. Now Gov. Kehoe has yet to fill those vacancies, but has begun interviews with potential candidates. Kitchen goes on to mention that the Missouri Ethics Commission is not the only commission in Missouri that has vacant seats. This includes various spots in Kansas City to which many people have applied, but appointments have yet to be made. *This episode was recorded on June 24. The Missouri Ethics Commission has six seats, which are appointed by the Missouri Governor. To have a quorum, four of those six seats must be filled. While on June 16, 2025, Governor Mike Kehoe appointed five new members to various boards and commissions throughout Missouri, he has not yet appointed any additional members to the Missouri Ethics Commission.*Music used within this Women Speak episode is a song called “I Wish I Knew You Then” by Kansas City local artist Honeybee and the group's lead female vocalist, Makayla Scott. “I Wish I Knew You Then” is a recent single, which Honeybee released in March 2025. Jackson County legislator Sean Smith, who along with a handful of local lawmakers met with Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe last week, says it's essential for the county to "straighten out the property tax debacles" if it wants voters to pass a future stadium sales tax measure to keep the teams in town.
Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe is pushing for a state board to oversee the St. Louis police department because he says it will make the city safer in the long run. The GOP chief executive is brushing aside criticism that the idea is another example of Republican-controlled state government micromanaging the heavily Democratic St. Louis region. In a wide-ranging interview with STLPR the day after his first State of the State address, Kehoe discussed public safety and a host of other issues including taxes, education funding and diversity programs.
In his first State of the State as Missouri governor, Mike Kehoe described a lack of hope among young people due to crime. He urged the General Assembly to pass legislation that would support law enforcement officers and increase penalties.
Gwendolyn Grant, president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Kansas City, said her colleagues and community members are outraged that Missouri Gov. Mike Parson freed former KCPD detective Eric DeValkenaere last week.
After six and a half years, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson is set to leave office in January. In an interview with KCUR, Parson reflected on his tenure — including accomplishments like expanding I-70, if he plans to pardon former KCPD officer Eric DeValkenaere, and his hopes for the future of Missouri.
Despite hinting that it could happen, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson won't say for sure whether he will pardon or commute the sentence of Eric DeValkenaere, the former KCPD officer serving six years in prison for killing Cameron Lamb. Parson spoke to KCUR's Up To Date about his tenure before leaving office on Jan. 13.

In the meantime, the case is on hold, meaning no trial can take place. The order said the court would hear the case, which could take months to resolve, the week of April 22. In the meantime, the case is on hold, meaning no trial can take place. The order said the court would hear the case, which could take months to resolve, the week of April 22. That timeline allows for a ruling by the end of the court's regular term in June, which is faster than is typical when the court hears arguments but not as fast as prosecutors wanted it to be.https://www.politico.com/news/2024/02/28/how-the-supreme-court-just-threw-trumps-2024-trial-schedule-into-turmoil-00144043 2024 Election Era Is Biden's Michigan Problem A Media Creation or a Serious Issue? https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/28/politics/biden-michigan-vulnerabilities-israel-gaza/index.htmlhttps://newrepublic.com/article/179386/media-overhyping-uncommitted-threat-bidenBorder Wars https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-biden-border-election-news-02-29-24/index.htmlTrump's Increasing Money Pithttps://www.cnn.com/2024/02/28/politics/donald-trump-appeals-court-new-york/index.htmlAlleged VP list for Trumphttps://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2024/mar/1/trump-puts-texas-gov-greg-abbott-on-vp-shortlist/ The Biden Replacement Debate continues, but is it just noise at this point? https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/2895228/liberal-pundits-debate-biden-replacement-scenarios/Delegate counts https://www.google.com/search?q=democratic+primary&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS901US901&oq=democratic+primary+&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQRRhAMgYIAhBFGDsyBggDEEUYPNIBCDMzOTlqMGo3qAIAsAIA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8ABC election center: https://abcnews.go.com/electionsI am begrudgingly including this AXE piece: https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/29/opinions/biden-trump-michigan-primary-revealed-secret-axelrod/index.htmlLAST CALLI disagree to agree but I am not disagreeable Esther Perel on Pivot @TheHeartlandPOD on Twitter and ThreadsCo-HostsAdam Sommer @Adam_Sommer85 (Twitter) @adam_sommer85 (Post)Rachel Parker @msraitchetp (Post) Sean Diller (no social)The Heartland Collective - Sign Up Today!JOIN PATREON FOR MORE - AND JOIN OUR SOCIAL NETWORK!“Change The Conversation”Outro Song: “The World Is On Fire” by American Aquarium http://www.americanaquarium.com/
As a third-generation farmer, Mike Parson, the 57th Governor of Missouri, has a deep empathy for the challenges and opportunities facing farmers in the Show-Me State's agricultural community. As his time in office winds down and a return to the seat of his John Deere tractor draws near, Gov. Parson goes Inside the ICE House to discuss Missouri's agribusiness output, the highlights of his tenure, and the goals he's focused on completing as the state's chief executive. https://www.ice.com/insights/conversations/inside-the-ice-house

Torrey dives into the use of the word "thug" and if it's really a racial dog-whistle. Baltimore's citation docket didn't get many citations from the Baltimore Police Department, and there appear to be some possible gaps with services. We discuss if this is the right approach to dealing with low-level crimes. We also scrutinize Maryland Gov. Wes Moore's massive investments in climate change, and if the pace is too reckless.
Gov. Mike Parson highlighted bipartisan issues in his final State of the State address as Missouri governor, gaining him some praise across the aisle. The Republican governor shares his agenda and goals for the last year of his term.

And Missouri should see $1.7 billion of that money. Alabama is set to get about $1.4 billionArkansas just over $1 billionIndiana more than $850 millionKansas over $450,000Iowa over $400,00According to administration estimates some 24 million folks are without high speed internet access to their homes, many of which are located in the areas largely represented by and governed by Republican members of congress like Jason Smith in the Missouri 8th District one of the single most impoverished districts in America. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson, noted Federal money glut who pretends to hate the government for political points said that the money will “greatly assist our ongoing investments in Missouri's broadband infrastructure”This comes as part of the Biden administrations “Internet For all” initiative. “What we're doing is, as I said, not unlike what Franklin Delano Roosevelt did when he brought electricity to nearly every American home and farm in our nation. Today (Vice President) Kamala (Harris) and I are making an equally historic investment to connect everyone in America to high speed internet, and affordable high speed internet, by 2030,”So far none of the Republican governors have denounced this redistribution of wealth as a massive government overreach or bloated spending. LGBTQ supporters were swift to push back on the woman's complaints, and they showed up in droves Tuesday night to counter complaints by the woman and her supporters. Some say the employee is dressing like a stripper, and only appropriate for night clubs. The public comment portion of the meeting lasted three hours before the board decided to end comment and allow others to simply email their diatribes. Sadie Anderson, who described themselves as being the partner of the library staff member, urged the library board to continue to support the employee.“My partner is having to do something that no person on earth should have to do, they are having to fight for their mere right to exist,” Anderson said. “My partner, myself, and every single person in this room should be able to express themselves and feel comfortable in the clothing they choose and wear those clothes without fear of ridicule. It is as simple as that.”https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/stcharles/more-than-350-people-pack-st-charles-library-meeting-in-fight-over-dress-code-lgbtq/article_363f3d66-1069-11ee-afd9-a7e1bfb0bc7d.htmlKANSAS VOTING RIGHTS CASE GOES SUPREMENo, they didn't add sour cream and tomatoes - but the Kansas election law from 2021 is being challenged in court and it's headed to the Kansas state supreme courtto review portions of a voting rights lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of mandates created in 2021 in response to election fraud conspiracy theories - all of which were lies. The question is whether Kansans' right to vote is undermined by state law restricting the number of advance ballots a person can deliver to an election office and the new state law requiring election volunteers to verify signatures on advance ballots. The plaintiffs challenging the laws filed have asked for an injunction during the pendency of the case.Davis Hammet with Loud Light, one of the groups involved in the case. said “It should be concerning to every Kansan, the idea that you do everything right, and then the state just alleges that someone didn't think your signature match so your vote isn't counted.”The law also created new penalties for touching somebody else's ballot, distributing ballots or altering the postmark on an advanced ballot. Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly vetoed both bills, but was overridden. So if you're in Kansas, keep your hands and arms inside the voting booth at all times.Wisconsin Elections Commission Still Impacted By Trump's Big LieThe Wisconsin Elections Commission failed to reappoint administrator Meagan Wolfe in a vote Tuesday that three Democratic commission members are banking on to protect her from a Senate confirmation process - Wolfe is expected to lose a confirmation vote. Democrats argued a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling in 2022 allows Wolfe to remain in the seat indefinitely — defying the efforts of election deniers to oust her after falsely accusing her of helping to steal the 2020 election, a claim that has been shown to have no merit, and is simply put: Not true. Before the “Big Lie” of 2020, Wolfe was unanimously endorsed by the commission for the administrator's job in 2019 and confirmed by the Republican majority in the Senate. It appears that while she was qualified to do the job prior, the only change is that she told the truth in 2020 which made former President and current federal indictment facer, Donald Trump, grumpy.Biden won Wisconsin by over 20,000 votes but that didn't stop Trump and his supporters from attacking Wolfe, who again was confirmed by a republican state senate, and claiming that she was a secret democrat or Biden agent, among other baseless attacks.Earlier this month, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on a campaign by some Republican state senators against confirming Wolfe for another term. https://wisconsinexaminer.com/2023/06/28/election-commission-fails-to-reappoint-wolfe-in-maneuver-to-keep-her-on-the-job/Iowa Governor Costs Taxpayers For Keeping SecretsThe Polk County District Court approved an agreement between the governor's office and three Iowa journalists and their media organizations following the Supreme Court's decision allowing an open records lawsuit to proceed in April. The Governor's office agreed to pay $135,000 (of tax payer money) in legal fees and costs incurred during the legal battle, as well as agreeing to undergo a one-year period of judicial oversight in regard to open records requests by the plaintiffs to ensure the office continues to comply with the state Open Records Act. In other words, Iowans will also be paying for judges to babysit the Governor's office because they can't play nice. Thomas Story, an attorney for the ACLU of Iowa, said:“Throughout this litigation, we have emphasized one crucial point: that nobody is above the law,” “The Iowa Supreme Court reinforced that point and set valuable precedent that supports the right of all Iowans to a transparent, responsive government at every level.”https://iowacapitaldispatch.com/2023/06/26/district-court-approves-settlement-in-open-records-lawsuit-against-governor/Missouri Independent, Arkansas Advocate, St. Louis Post Dispatch, Kansas Reflector, Wisconsin Examinor, and Iowa Capital Dispatch

Hour 2 - Happy Thursday, friends! Here's what Nick Reed covers this hour: Should we allow children to no longer like the rainbow because the LGBTQ has taken it over? Missouri Gov. Mike Parson on Wednesday signed a pair of bills into law banning transgender health care for minors and restricting athletes' participation in sports to teams that match their biological sex. Starting Aug. 28, Missouri health care providers won't be able to prescribe sex change surgeries for teens and children. Most adults will still have access to transgender health care under the law, but it won't be covered under Medicaid.
