In this episode, Bill talks about: - His latest book "The Autonomous Revolution" - Maladaptation to Virtual spaces - His advice on venture funding - Role of exponential technology in our lives Bill Davidow's latest book is "The Autonomous Revolution: Reclaiming the Future we've sold to Machines", which he has co-authored with Michael S. Malone. We are at the dawn of the Autonomous Revolution, a turning point in human history as decisive as the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. More and more, AI-based machines are replacing human beings, and online environments are gathering our data and using it to manipulate us. This loss of human autonomy amounts to nothing less than a societal phase change, a fundamental paradigm shift. The same institutions will remain--schools, banks, churches, and corporations--but they will radically change form, obey new rules, and use new tools. Many of the book's recommendations--such as using taxes to control irresponsible internet behavior and enabling people to put their data into what are essentially virtual personal information "safety deposit boxes"--are bold and visionary, but we must figure out how we will deal with these emerging challenges now, before the Autonomous Revolution overcomes us. Augmented and Virtual Reality are a wonderful set of tools that open up a lot of possibilities in how we experience and share information. Yet as we have less interaction with the physical world, we can become more anti-social, depressed and disconnected from physical interactions and environments where rich exchanges occur and build emotional intelligence and adaptability. It's easy to imagine a near-future where, we don't buy things in physical stores, we don't go to the doctor, and it becomes even more difficult to make a living in the physical world, which is becoming economically unproductive with travel costs and having to compete with the likes of Amazon, eCommerce, etc. How do we find the balance of living in the physical world and use the virtual world as a tool to enhance our experience, not disconnect us from it? How do we take care of our mental health and connection with our ecosystem instead of insulate from it? Join us this Thursday at StraightTalk.Live as we invite special guest William Davidow, Author & Investor at Mohr Davidow Ventures to discuss his unique perspective on how we've already been implementing the gifts of virtual reality for over 2 Million years of our evolution and what we need to be mindful of if we are to survive and thrive in the next phase.

William Davidow is a Silicon Valley pioneer, former Intel VP, and renowned venture capitalist.  He is author of the new book, with tech journalist Michael Malone, THE AUTONOMOUS REVOLUTION: Reclaiming the Future We’ve Sold to Machines (Berrett-Koehler, February 18, 2020).  It’s a provocative look at how to safeguard humanity from our autonomous future and how to harness its benefits. According to Davidow and Malone, for the third time in the history of humanity civilization is undergoing phase change.  The first was the Agricultural Revolution, the second the Industrial Revolution, and we are now in the midst of the Autonomous Revolution. Some ideas discussed: How to adapt society to our new era and transform our relationship with intelligent machines the authors propose in the new book Creating tiered personal information “safety deposit boxes” over which users would have complete control to protect internet privacy; Imposing a tax on sending emails, time spent on social networks, and gaming; Programs that automatically block phone use while we’re driving; Regulation that puts limits on Artificial Intelligence; Proactive investment in the infrastructure of the future to offset inevitable job loss.   More on William Davidow:  William Davidow is a Silicon Valley pioneer who ran the microprocessor division at Intel at the dawn of the chip revolution and was later senior vice president of marketing and sales. Prior to Intel Corp., Bill worked in various managerial positions at Hewlett Packard and General Electric. He cofounded Mohr Davidow Ventures, one of the Valley's premier venture capital firms, in 1985. Bill serves on the boards of California Institute of Technology and the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy. He is the author of three books and the coauthor of two, including The Virtual Corporation, which sold more than 100,000 copies.   Episode Exerpts: On the Evolution of Technology Innovation “When I was at Intel, you know, we used to get up and feel like we were putting on our Superman shirts and going out and changing the world. And what we were doing was automating existing processes: In other words, we made a stoplight run better or we made a typewriter into a word processor. But if you looked at it, there was still a factory or there was still a stoplight. We didn't change the structure of things. And what is different today is that our technologies are changing the social and economic structure of things.” The Problem of Virtual Worlds like Facebook “We have real problem that people are choosing to live in a virtual world. It turns out that you evolved in a physical world, YOU controlled the physical world. A tree was not created to be firewood. You managed the world and made the tree firewood.   The physical world had no purpose and you were running the physical world. But when you go to a virtual world, a virtual world DOES have a purpose. And the purpose of the virtual world is to control your behavior. you you're down to two senses, both of which are impaired. “ On the Accelerating Pace of Job Destruction “We keep finding new work for people to do, so we keep creating opportunities, I think today the challenge is that we may not be able to create the opportunities fast enough. I mean, these technologies have such broad impact. Netflix put Blockbuster Video out of business, when Blockbuster Video had nine thousand stores and 60,000 employees. And Netflix, I think, had one thousand employees. And those are the kinds of things will continue to happen. It’s going to turn everything upside down. I believe in a free market, but free markets have their flaws. They do not allocate wealth based on social contribution, they allocate wealth based on your ability to make money. In the future we may be living in a society where we're going to have to find ways to compensate people based on their social contribution as opposed to whether they're just a great high speed trader. “ Kent Lindstrom (host):          https://kentlindstrom.com William Davidow:                  https://www.davidow.com Something Ventured:           https://somethingventured.us

Wildcat Venture Partners seeks the wildcatters of the 21st century (tech entrepreneurs) who prospect, refine, and monetize digital oil (data) to become the next market disruptors and category leaders. The company invests in B2B and B2B2C startups leveraging key technologies such as Machine Learning/AI, IoT, and Cloud & Mobility in the following markets: Digital Health, EdTech, Enterprise SaaS, and FinTech. But I wanted to learn more about the story behind Wildcat and obtain valuable insights for startup founders who listen to this daily tech podcast. Bryan Stolle is a Founding Partner at Wildcat, where he focuses on investments in FinTech, EdTech, quant marketing, and technology that addresses elder care. His specific areas of interest include software as a service (SaaS) and platforms that enable alternative credit, payments, and insurance, as well as those that support the post-K-12 educational market and the growing elder care market. Concurrently, he is a General Partner at Mohr Davidow Ventures, which he joined in 2007. Growing up under two generations of self-made businessmen, Bryan’s work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit are deeply rooted in his youth. As a teen, he competitively raced motocross, taking on jobs delivering newspapers and making pizzas to support his racing passion. His early love of athletics has led him to view his role in venture capital as more of a coach or mentor to entrepreneurs who are embarking on a journey he’s also taken. When not at work, Bryan is a sports fan, cheering on his teams: the Texas Longhorns, Golden State Warriors, and San Francisco Giants. A serial entrepreneur, Bryan, created more than $1 billion in realized liquidity for his investors as a founder. He oversaw the creation, go-to-market, and market growth of product and service offerings that have achieved more than $2 billion in revenues, and has raised more than $1 billion in venture, public market, and investment management capital. As founder and CEO of Agile Software (formerly, NASDAQ: AGIL), Bryan led the creation of a new category now called product lifecycle management (PLM). He led the company through a public offering and secondary offering that raised over $500 million. He executed on almost two dozen private and public M&A transactions and steered a major strategy shift that led to the eventual acquisition of the company by Oracle.
