Today we talked with F-Plus Trio!   F-PLUS is a violin, clarinet, and percussion trio committed to collaborating with today's most exciting composers to establish a diverse repertoire for their unique instrumentation. Formed in 2016 at the Bang on a Can Summer Festival, the ensemble has performed all over the country, including Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Ear Taxi Festival, the International Clarinet Association "ClarinetFest," and the New Music Gathering. F-PLUS has premiered over 35 new works since its inception, including commissioned works by Chen Yi, Chicago Symphony Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery, Grawemeyer-winner George Tsontakis, Emma O'Halloran, Gemma Peacocke, Perry Goldstein, Matthew Ricketts, and Charles Peck, among many others. The ensembled has been the recipient of commissioning grants and additional funding from the Fromm Foundation, Chamber Music America, the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition, New Music USA, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Irish Arts Council and the New Zealand Arts Council. Megan Ihnen is a “new music force of nature.” The act of live performance is integral to Megan's work and her performances thrive on elaborate sound worlds and fully-developed dramatic interpretations. Through narrative and non-narrative musical storytelling, she explores the subjects of memory, nostalgia, the perception of time, and relationships. Whether through chamber music, staged recitals, opera, or large ensemble soloist work, she emphasizes the full range of vocal sounds, timbres, colors, and uses that characterize the 21st century voice. Megan is a prolific new music vocalist who has appeared with the International Contemporary Ensemble, Fifth House Ensemble, Latitude49, Great Noise Ensemble, Stone Mason Projects, Rhymes With Opera, SONAR new music, and more. She has sung with many outstanding performers including Nadia Shpachenko, Michael Hall, Gregory Oakes, Nick Zoulek, Hillary LaBonte as well as premiered the work of Mara Gibson, Griffin Candey, Garrett Schumann, Christian Carey, Alan Theisen, Anna Brake, D. Edward Davis, and more. A gifted narrative and non-narrative musical storyteller, Megan's performance work explores the depths of memory, nostalgia, the perception of time, and complex relationships. Ihnen's interpretations of modern and contemporary repertoire have garnered growing acclaim. She is particularly recognized as an excellent recitalist. Her This World of Yes program of contemporary music for voice and saxophone with Alan Theisen explores the themes of pathways, choices, and duality through the work of contemporary composers such as Jessica Rudman, Michael Young, and Michelle McQuade Dewhirst. This World of Yes has been performed across the United States including appearances in Kansas City, New Orleans, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Detroit, and Baltimore. With performances in Washington D.C., Baltimore, Colorado Springs, and Kansas City, Ms. Ihnen has worked with violinist Martha Morrison Muehleisen and Rome Prize winner video artist Karen Yasinsky to take audiences on a profound journey through György Kurtág's Kafka Fragments through video and sound. Finally, Ihnen's Single Words She Once Loved is a performance that centers around the ideas and effects of memory, dementia, and time. It is a deeply personal exploration of the dueling forces of ‘eternal sunshine of the spotless mind' and ‘God gave us memories so that we may have roses in winter'. Single Words She Once Loved features compositions by David Smooke, Ryan Keebaugh, Daniel Felsenfeld, Jeffrey Mumford, and more. In the spring of 2017, Megan undertook a fundraising project for her first album, “Sleep Songs: Wordless Lullabies for the Sleepless.” She commissioned over 25 diverse composers from the United States and abroad to write brief, wordless lullabies for mezzo-soprano. Megan has also had recordings on Navona Records, Hoot/Wisdom Recordings, I CARE IF YOU LISTEN Fall 2015 Mixtape, and the CarpeDM Seize Des Moines “Music Mix: Volume III” which was featured at the 2016 SXSW Festival. As a chamber musician, Megan is proud to have trained at the following summer festivals: impuls International Ensemble and Composers Academy for Contemporary Music, Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice (SICPP), Fresh Inc Festival, Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA, and MusicX. Her devotion to the proliferation of new music extends beyond the commissioning and performing of music to teaching, workshopping, and mentoring of emerging artists in the field. She also works to increase the visibility and influence of new music through writing on the subject for multiple online and print publications. As a curator, she selected twenty songs for mezzo-soprano and piano for the NewMusicShelf Anthology of New Music. Mezzo-Soprano, Vol. 1 includes works by: Michael Betteridge, Mark Buller, Stephen DeCesare, Douglas Fisk, Matt Frey, Jodi Goble, Ricky Ian Gordon, Cara Haxo, Cameron Lam, Cecilia Livingston, Shona Mackay, Tony Manfredonia, Nicole Murphy, Eric Pazdziora, Frances Pollock, Julia Seeholzer, Alan Thiesen, Dennis Tobenski, Moe Touizrar, and Ed Windels. Megan was honored to receive a Phyllis Bryn-Julson Award for Commitment to and Performance of 20th/21st Century Music in 2009 and a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award in Classical Music: Solo Performance in 2014. She was an accomplished violist and drama student before pursuing degrees in music and vocal performance from Augustana University and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Ihnen has been a board member for Baltimore Concert Opera and HOWL performing arts ensemble. Megan is a devoted teacher who recently shepherded studios at Drake University Community School of Music, Southwestern Community College School for Music Vocations, and Graceland University before taking on communications roles at Nief-Norf, Live Music Project, and New Music USA. She has also been a resident faculty artist for the UMKC Summer Composition Workshop and the Mostly Modern Festival. In addition to UMKC, Megan has presented her popular masterclasses, workshops, and lectures a Bowling Green State University, Xavier University of Louisiana, New Music Gathering, Iowa Thespian Festival, UNCG Greensboro, and Florida Atlantic University. Chelsea Tinsler Jones is an avid percussionist, arts administrator, and educator based in Utah County. She has a unique skill set having studied solo, orchestral, and contemporary percussion in addition to musical styles from West Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil, and the Middle East. Chelsea is percussionist and Director of Operations for Khemia Ensemble, an internationally performing mixed-chamber ensemble dedicated to promoting contemporary classical music. Khemia actively commissions new works and mentors young performers and composers. Performance highlights include National Sawdust, the Mizzou International Composers Festival, Strange Beautiful Music X Festival, New Music Gathering, and the MoxSonic Experimental Sonic Arts Festival, among several university residences. As a soloist, Chelsea has performed with the University of Michigan Symphony Band, Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble, and the Hartt Contemporary Players. She placed second in the 2016 Black Swamp Solo Percussion Competition. Chelsea's performance of Andy Akiho's Stop Speaking for solo snare drum accompanied by a stop-motion animated film by visual artist Alisa Yang won “Best Music Video” at the 2018 Ann Arbor Film Festival. Notable freelance appearances include the White Christmas National Tour (Paducah, KY), Ballet West Orchestra (Salt Lake City, UT), Section Percussionist with Paducah Symphony Orchestra (2017-20), steelworks steelband (2014-present), AEPEX Contemporary Performance (Detroit, MI), Rochester Symphony (MI), New Britain Symphony (CT), Nutmeg Symphony (CT), Adrian Symphony (MI), and the Artful Living Musical Theater Company (CT). A passionate educator, Chelsea is Instructor of Music at Utah Valley University. In 2021, Chelsea's Level Up! 15 Sequential Duets for the Developing Snare Drummer was released by Tapspace. Previously, she has held positions as a Lecturer of Music at the University of Tennessee at Martin, Instrumental Music Teacher in the Ann Arbor Public Schools, and Director of the University of Michigan's Impact Youth Percussion Ensemble. We talk about the impact of the pandemic and the lessons we've learned along the way. Most importantly we talk about the soul-deep need for community that is the human experience, and how we can use music to connect. New music powerhouse Dr. Lisa Neher (pronouns: she/her, last name pronounced "NEER") is an award-winning composer, mezzo-soprano, and actress on a mission to transform audiences through sound, story, and vulnerability. Described as a “maestro of beautifully wacky noises” (Oregon ArtsWatch) and a composer of “varied and imitable” vocal lines (Contemporary Classical), Lisa writes music inspired by female athleticism, the tender love of friends, the ambiguities of death, and the eerie mystery of deep ocean life. Praised as “a small woman with a very big voice” and “especially alive” (Oregon ArtsWatch), Lisa captivates audiences as a performer with her electrifying dramatic commitment and unforgettable vocal colors. Lisa's musical-theatrical fluency and passion for contemporary music have led to engagements such as Reciter for William Walton's Façade with the Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra, the world premiere of Space Station 189: A Micro-Opera for Instagram at New Music Gathering, the first staged version of Sun Songs: Three Micro-Operas by Augusta Read Thomas with the Center for New Music, the world premiere of Aaron Israel Levin's Fiumana, for mezzo-soprano singing while playing the bass drum, and the leading role of Jennifer in the world premiere of Rita Ueda's chamber opera One Thousand White Paper Cranes for Japan with the Singaporean ensemble Chamber Sounds. Her credits include Duruflé's Requiem, Mozart's Requiem, Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, and Coronation Mass, Bach's Magnificat and Ascension Oratorio, and Arvo Part's Pässio, with groups such as the Central Iowa Symphony, the Grinnell Oratorio Singers, and the Chamber Singers of Iowa City. Her operatic credits include Dorabella in Così fan tutte with Iowa City Concert Opera, Dolores in The Gondoliers, Mrs. Malaprop in The Rivals, Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus and Annio in La clemenza di Tito with Martha-Ellen Tye Opera Theatre, the Student in the premiere of the chamber opera The Nightingale and the Rose by Li Kai Han Jeremiah with Helianthus Ensemble, and Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro with the Midwest Institute of Opera. Lisa was a Young Artist with Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre and the Vancouver International Song Institute. Lisa's compositions include solo and chamber music for instruments and vocal works in the operatic, song, and choral genres. Her particular passion for text and poetry has led to works such as her chamber operas Sense of Self, about a triathlete struggling with a breast cancer diagnosis and White Horizon, about a nineteenth-century Arctic expedition gone wrong. Lisa's major song cycle, No One Saves the Earth from Us But Us speaks the the urgency of the global climate crisis. Her commissioners include Third Angle New Music, Third Angle New Music, Opera Elect, Opera Theatre Oregon, Coe College Symphony Orchestra, Kirkwood Community College Choirs, the Glass City Singers, tenor Zach Finkelstein, pianist Michael Kirkendoll, and flutists Rose Bishop and Hal Ide. Lisa was selected to be part of the inaugural year of the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music. Lisa is a member of the Iowa Composer's Forum, Cascadia Composers, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and ASCAP. In addition to her creative work, Lisa coaches singers on technique, acting, and interpretation, and composers on writing and marketing their music. Recognized in particular for her deep knowledge of the voice and extended techniques, she frequently teaches workshops on composing for singers. Lisa has served on faculty at Lewis & Clark College, Coe College, Kirkwood Community College, and Grinnell College. ​Lisa graduated summa cum laude from Lewis & Clark College with degrees in vocal performance, music composition, and theatre, and holds a master's degree in music composition from the University of Kansas and a Doctor of Musical Arts in voice performance and pedagogy from the University of Iowa. Her doctoral essay explores the chamber vocal works of composer Gabriela Lena Frank. She is a vocal student of Julia Nielsen, Stephen Swanson, Katherine Eberle, Julia Broxholm, and Susan McBerry, and studied composition under the tutelage of Michael Johansen and Forrest Pierce. “It’s very unlikely I'll have a full-time position with an orchestra as a pianist as my career. That is not a thing that happens to too many people these days. So, if not that, sink or swim, I have to start thinking about my career in a different way.”Marianne Parker is one of the most active and vibrant musicians I know. Just to name a few things she has going on: performances and commissioning works with her piano and marimba duo, L&M; recording works by Haitian composers; curating an anthology of 21st century works for solo piano through New Music Shelf; producing performances with New Music Chicago along with other administrative tasks; a packed performance and teaching schedule; and still has time to spend with her family, go to parks with her lovely dog, build a garden, hiking, running, what else?! Lainie Fefferman is a composer, performer, teacher, organizer, and general proponent of new and forward-thinking music. Her most recent commissions have been from JACK Quartet, Tenth Intervention, and So Percussion. "White Fire," her electroacoustic meditation on the heroines of the Hebrew Bible has been touring internationally and is coming out as an album in 2021. Today I am talking to soprano Emily Thorner who specialises in contemporary classical music but is also the CEO of moon rising, her company where she helps people as an intuitive healer. In our chat we talk about various issues, highlighting similarities between growing as an artist through the process of learning and performing music to the process of healing and being fulfilled in life.International "ultra-soprano" (Second Inversion, WA, USA) and "new music rising star" (The Stranger, WA, USA) Emily Thorner is rapidly making her mark as a soloist in contemporary chamber ensembles, orchestras, and modern operas. Known for her command of stratospheric high notes, Ms. Thorner is highly sought-after for world premieres due to her unusual range and fearless virtuosity. Recent performances have included: Acht Brücken festival in Cologne (on WDR radio), Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme at Snape Maltings in the UK with Jessica Cottis and Claire Booth, the Donaueschinger Musiktage with Deutsche Kammerchor, Seattle, USA, singing a world premiere with Kin of the Moon, Gladbeck, Germany performing with the Duisberg Philharmonic and Chorwerk Ruhr for the Ruhrtiennale festival, and in Italy, singing as the Soprano Soloist for "Hotel Paradiso" by Benedict Mason with TransArt under the baton of Clement Power.Additionally, she has also performed in Boston and New York for a double performance of Rumpelstiltskin with Guerilla Opera as The Miller, which has been recorded for Navona Records, the classical label of PARMA records, and Sisa in Noli Me Tangere, which featured her in a mad scene in the Tagalog language. She was also the first soprano in twenty years to take part in the new music course of the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme and her entrepreneurial spirit has led her to put together STATE OF BEING, a world tour written for her voice and electronics beginning late 2020. Upcoming world premieres written for her voice include collaborations with composers Julianna Hall (USA), Max Hundelshausen (DE), Alex Mills (UK), James Joslin (UK), Rob Laidlow (UK), Martyna Kosecka (Norway/Poland), Kaley Lane Eaton (USA), Anthony R. Green (USA/NL), and Rita Ueda (Canada).Ms. Thorner released her first album on Itunes with ensemble Kin of the Moon for "FUNERAL SENTENCES FOR DAMAGED CELLS" in 2020. Her one-woman voice & electronics feminist song performance project "White Fire," an electroacoustic meditation on the heroines of the Hebrew Bible, premiered at Merkin Hall in 2016 and she has been touring it internationally ever since. She is a co-founder and director of New Music Gathering, an annual conference/festival hybrid event for the international New Music Community. Andy Hudson is currently Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and the NC State Chair for the International Clarinet Association. He has appeared in Carnegie Hall’s ‘Weill Recital Hall,’ Chicago’s ‘Symphony Center,’ and has performed at the World Congress of the International Alliance for Women in Music, College Music Society conferences in the US and Canada, the New Music Gathering, and International Clarinet Association Festivals in the US and Europe. Andy has commissioned or premiered dozens fo works to date, and has performed as guest principal clarinet of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, the North Carolina Opera, and the Carolina Ballet. He has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on their MusicNOW series and was appointed 3rd/Bass Clarinetist of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra in 2020. Viet’s music has been featured in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Library of Congress, Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, Aspen Music Festival, New Music Gathering, Boston GuitarFest, International Double Reed Society Conference, US Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, and on American Public Radio’s Performance Today. While at Peabody, he received the Peabody Alumni Award (the Valedictorian honor) and the Gustav Klemm Award for excellence in composition. Viet has been a fellow at the Mizzou International Composers Festival, Eighth Blackbird Creative Lab, Cabrillo Festival’s Young Composer Workshop, Copland House’s CULTIVATE emerging composers workshop, and was also a scholarship student at the Aspen, Bowdoin, and Lake Champlain music festivals. Additionally, he has received artist residencies from Yaddo, Copland House, Ucross Foundation, and Atlantic Center for the Arts (under Melinda Wagner, 2012 and Christopher Theofanidis, 2014). Pamela Stein Lynde is a busy person. She is a singer, composer, producer, and music educator. She began her career as a classically trained singer but as the years went on she realized that her abilities were applicable in other areas. We go into detail about the journey of her career and how she was able to create two non-profits that help musicians, composers, and singers. MEET PAMELA STEIN LYNDE Praised for her “rich dramatics” (The Boston Globe), Pamela Stein Lynde is a versatile soprano, composer, contemporary music performer, music educator, and producer, known for inspiration, introspection, and passion in all aspects of her work. Recent performances have included premiering Lesley Flanigan’s haunting sound sculpture VOICES for four singers and loop pedals at Roulette; premiering New York-based composer Eric Lemmon’s The Impossible Will Take a Little While with the Highline Chamber Ensemble at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music; and performing a concert of chamber music by contemporary female composers, including a premier by Philadelphia-based composer Jenny Beck, at the National Opera Center. The 2015 launch of her company Stone Mason Projects has brought exciting performances of contemporary vocal chamber music to the National Opera Center, Arts on Site, Wilmer Jennings Gallery, and multiple other venues across the ti-state area, about which reviews have said, “The singing was stellar, on par with anything I’ve heard recently at higher profile venues such as Zankel Hall or National Sawdust. These concerts deserve a wider audience.” In the fall of 2016, Stone Mason Projects released its first music video, From the Mountain, a co-production with Contemporary Undercurrent of Song Project. Stone Mason’s upcoming endeavors include the commissioning and producing of a new chamber opera and the launch of the inaugural New Hope Sound(e)scape Festival in New Hope, PA in June of 2017. Stone Mason Projects has appeared on a panel discussing contemporary opera creation with will New York Opera Alliance during New York Opera Festival and will be presenting this May at the third annual New Music Gathering conference at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Pamela has appeared as a singer in prior seasons with Helix New Music Ensemble, The Nouveau Classical Project, American Opera Projects, Beth Morrison Projects, Rhymes With Opera, Saratoga Fine Arts Festival, Yamaha Concert Artist Series, Yale’s New Music, New Haven series, and many others. She has worked with award-winning composers including David Lang, Tristan Perich, Jacob Cooper, Trevor Weston, Daniel Felsenfeld, Lisa Bielawa, Jenny Beck, and many others. She appears as a vocalist on minimalist composer Alexander Turnquist’s album Flying Fantasy, released on the Western Vinyl label. She was a featured guest composer at Phoenix’s OME New Music Marathon concert in 2015 and has had her compositions premiered by Patchwork American Song Project in both New York and Chicago, Guided Imagery Opera, Princeton-based group CUSP, and many other ensembles across the country. Pamela has taught voice, composition, music theory, vocal pedagogy, music history, performance practice and chamber music at the College of Saint Elizabeth, Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts, and City College of New York. Pamela teaches masterclasses and workshops and gives lectures on creating new music for voice at colleges, universities, and conservatories around the country. She was invited to speak about teaching new music in higher education at the inaugural New Music Gathering conference at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Her organization Your Music Bus, co-founded with superstar composers Lisa Bielawa and Aaron Jay Kernis, has been serving the needs of the university and conservatory composition students and departments across the country since 2014.
