EPISODE 122: Composer of the award-winning feature films Peace by Chocolate, Daughter of the Sun, and Botero, David Bertok writes for film, TV, and the concert hall. After graduating from music college in Germany, David enjoyed a busy career as a live musician touring Europe with progressive rock bands opening for acts such as Scorpions and Saga. His band, Subsignal, reached the German album charts twice during his tenure as keyboarder, songwriter, lyricist, and producer. In 2012, he relocated to Los Angeles on a Fulbright Scholarship and was admitted to the famed Scoring for Motion Picture and Television Program at USC. David's lush orchestral themes and distinctive melodic approach can be heard on Netflix's Chef's Table and Home Game, as well as Amazon's Brittany Runs a Marathon and For the Love of George, just to name a few. David's musicography extends to songwriting, producing, and more. He has lent his orchestration skills to the 2018 Deadmau5 release of “Where's the Drop?”, arranging for 2018 America's Got Talent Semi-Finalists Angel City Chorale, collaborating with German Idol winner Marie Wegener and scoring a 60-minute symphonic orchestra work for the art installation “Stranger-Mankind” debuting in Munich in 2022. Whether scoring for a full orchestra or creating an intimate piece with a single piano, David has the spectral ability to tap into a project's soul and lift it off the screen into your memory. Recent projects include the feature films Daughter of the Sun (Audience Award winner at Montreal's Fantasia Film Fest), Peace by Chocolate, which premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, and the documentary Botero, brilliantly highlighting the life and works of legendary Columbian artist Fernando Botero. David has recently been nominated for a Hollywood Independent Music Award in the Contemporary Classical category for his piece “Fontana dell'Anima.” davidbertok.comContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!
You might be forgiven for guessing SHHH! Ensemble to be a collection of musically minded librarians, but you'd be way off the mark. Because SHHH! Ensemble makes noise. A lot of it. On a variety of instruments. And people are loving it. Which might be especially surprising given that SHHH! mostly plays contemporary classical works, a genre that can be intimidating to many audiences. So how do they do it?SHHH! comprises Ottawa-based life partners Edana Higham, a pianist, and Zac Pulak, a percussionist, making them possibly the world's only professional piano/percussion duo. Since launching their ensemble in 2016, Edana and Zac have made waves in Canada's classical-music scene, playing in venues and festivals from coast to coast and garnering raves from critics and audiences alike. They have collaborated with renowned contemporary classical composers, including John Beckwith, Monica Pearce and past Art Restart guest Frank Horvat. Here they explain how they decided to join musical forces and how they've developed the “avant-accessible” style that at each performance invites an audience to take a meticulously curated and delightful musical journey with them.

While classical music often suffers from an image of ancient dead white men, this month music lovers had a chance to hear an alternative to that stereotype. During Open Mic Classical's February performance at the Cultural Center in Yarmouth, guest ensemble Linking Legacies from Oberlin College and Conservatory celebrated Black History month with music from Black classical composers. https://www.lowercapenews.org/a-different-look-at-classical-music

Electronic musician Clark is always redefining his own sonic boundries, from signing with Warp Records at a young age, producing over thirteen albums, collaborations, remixing the likes of Depeche Mode and Thom Yorke to recently making his contemporary classical crossover with last year's Playground In A Lake. Chris and Paul had an early morning, very flowy, frank and caffeinated conversation springboarded from the reissue of the album Body Riddle - initially released to little fanfare 16 years ago and now regarded as something of a classic and cited by producers including Arca, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke. Chris talks about creativity, validation and rushing your face off to 78bpm music. In Britain the folk music was inextricably linked with the pre-Christian, or pagan past, which gave rise to quite a few pieces in which Pan appears, like this…or this……and perhaps this takes us too far afield, but isn't it interesting to see the Saxophone turn up in the role of one of Job's comforters in Vaughan William's “Job - A Masque for Dancing”?Some background to the great God Pan. Contains a discussion of Occult matters.Arthur Machen's masterpiece “The Great God Pan” , that H.B. specifically told Gav he'd never heard of, let alone read.…from there it's just a short step to The Fall's Leave the Capitol, with many Pan references. I'd put money on Birtwistle being completely unaware of this. The Dionysian Saxophone, a Short StudyPaul Gonsalves's 27 choruses of Crescendo and Diminuendo in Blue at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival are a good example of Dionysian energy embracing an entire crowd. Even with the sound quality and lack of image, it's still quite easy to hear how the audience is gradually moved out of itself into an ecstatic state. Newport again, but a very different Saxophonist. Out of all of Coltrane's outpourings, this is one of the closest to the Birtwistle, I think. It's not difficult to imagine Trane as the Great God Pan…Or maybe this. This is certainly the acid test for me to see if a piece of Contemporary Classical music is any good. Then again, it's not just Coltrane. One of the most shamefully overlooked players in this field was Sun Ra's tenor player John Gilmore. Listen to how this solo builds into an ecstatic explosion… Other Notable mentions should include… …and also this. Is this why Birtwistle wrote for the alto instead of the far more expressive tenor saxophone?Night's Black Bird (2002)Albrecht Dürer's Engraving featuring something that looks suspiciously like the Casa da Musica on it's side…..everything is connected.Flow, my tears, fall from your springs! Exiled for ever, let me mourn; Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings, There let me live forlorn. Down vain lights, shine you no more! No nights are dark enough for those That in despair their last fortunes deplore. Light doth but shame disclose. Never may my woes be relieved, Since pity is fled; And tears and sighs and groans my weary days, my weary days Of all joys have deprived. From the highest spire of contentment My fortune is thrown; And fear and grief and pain for my deserts, for my deserts Are my hopes, since hope is gone. Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell, Learn to contemn light Happy, happy they that in hell Feel not the world's despite. For Part I of the interview, please see Previous Post With a shared passion for Music, Text & Story, we talk about the many hurdles young musicians face in getting the support they need to succeed. We talk about the impact of the pandemic and the lessons we've learned along the way. Most importantly we talk about the soul-deep need for community that is the human experience, and how we can use music to connect. New music powerhouse Dr. Lisa Neher (pronouns: she/her, last name pronounced "NEER") is an award-winning composer, mezzo-soprano, and actress on a mission to transform audiences through sound, story, and vulnerability. Described as a “maestro of beautifully wacky noises” (Oregon ArtsWatch) and a composer of “varied and imitable” vocal lines (Contemporary Classical), Lisa writes music inspired by female athleticism, the tender love of friends, the ambiguities of death, and the eerie mystery of deep ocean life. Praised as “a small woman with a very big voice” and “especially alive” (Oregon ArtsWatch), Lisa captivates audiences as a performer with her electrifying dramatic commitment and unforgettable vocal colors. Lisa's musical-theatrical fluency and passion for contemporary music have led to engagements such as Reciter for William Walton's Façade with the Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra, the world premiere of Space Station 189: A Micro-Opera for Instagram at New Music Gathering, the first staged version of Sun Songs: Three Micro-Operas by Augusta Read Thomas with the Center for New Music, the world premiere of Aaron Israel Levin's Fiumana, for mezzo-soprano singing while playing the bass drum, and the leading role of Jennifer in the world premiere of Rita Ueda's chamber opera One Thousand White Paper Cranes for Japan with the Singaporean ensemble Chamber Sounds. Lisa was a Young Artist with Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre and the Vancouver International Song Institute. Lisa's compositions include solo and chamber music for instruments and vocal works in the operatic, song, and choral genres. Her particular passion for text and poetry has led to works such as her chamber operas Sense of Self, about a triathlete struggling with a breast cancer diagnosis and White Horizon, about a nineteenth-century Arctic expedition gone wrong. Lisa's major song cycle, No One Saves the Earth from Us But Us speaks the the urgency of the global climate crisis. Her commissioners include Third Angle New Music, Third Angle New Music, Opera Elect, Opera Theatre Oregon, Coe College Symphony Orchestra, Kirkwood Community College Choirs, the Glass City Singers, tenor Zach Finkelstein, pianist Michael Kirkendoll, and flutists Rose Bishop and Hal Ide. Lisa's major song cycle, No One Saves the Earth from Us But Us speaks the the urgency of the global climate crisis. Lisa graduated summa cum laude from Lewis & Clark College with degrees in vocal performance, music composition, and theatre, and holds a master's degree in music composition from the University of Kansas and a Doctor of Musical Arts in voice performance and pedagogy from the University of Iowa. How common is it to experience ‘hate' towards someone you once loved? We tend to think of 'hate' as one of the strongest emotions we can have, so what happens if you find yourself 'hating' your former partner, particularly if you have children with them. We discuss why some people experience this during or after the breakdown of their relationship, and how to move on from it. In the early 1990s Ruby Wax smashed out of the TV studio and rewrote the rule book on the celebrity chat show with 'When Ruby Wax Met…'. She joins Anita to look back at some of these encounters with stars such as Grace Jones, Carrie Fisher, Imelda Marcos, and one particularly memorable encounter with a future US President and his new girlfriend - a Mr Donald Trump. As part of our money series, we are looking at the FIRE Movement. The acronym, which stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early, is a method of extreme saving, in order to retire – or stop working – decades earlier. Recent studies suggest that over half of millennials do not see themselves as 'emotionally and behaviourally' connected to their job and company. Exhausted from high-pressure jobs and with a growing sense of burnout, some millennials are turning to the FIRE strategy in an attempt to become financially independent, sooner. Emma-Lou Montgomery is a personal finance and investment writer at Fidelity International, and Sarah Pennells is a Consumer Finance Specialist from the Royal London. Indian-American violinist Preetha Narayanan and British cellist Tara Franks met while studying at the Guildhall School of Music and went on to form a strings duo – Balladeste. Their style has been described as Contemporary Classical meets Folk in its broadest form - Indo-Baroque meets alt-folk minimalism. For their new album, Beyond Breath, they have taken fragments of melodic lines from a set of Indian devotional songs learnt in Preetha's childhood as inspiration. They join Anita to discuss the cross-cultural melding of their musical ideas and styles. The dynamic percussionist Colin Currie is back onstage this weekend with the Oregon Symphony. Midway through his artist's residency, he's performed with the Symphony as well as in non-traditional spots around the region. Currie visited our studio to talk about the composers and works that shaped him, and what he hopes new commissions can bring to life.
Kerry Muzzey is the composer for “The Seer”, a new documentary by director Laura Dunn and executive producers Robert Redford and Terrence Malick that just premiered at the 2016 SXSW film festival. Kerry's music has also been heard on TV shows like “Glee”. His 2014 album, “The Architect”, debuted at #5 on both the Billboard Classical and Contemporary Classical charts. We're continuing our special series on Musical Entrepreneurs with film and modern classical composer Kerry Muzzey. If you're a composer looking to make a living from your compositions, then you're going to really enjoy listening to Kerry's story. One of the most remarkable things about Kerry is the fact that he actually left a well-paying corporate job at MTV Networks in New York City to become a full-time composer. The way he did it, and the way he was able to get his music into TV and film, is very insightful. Kerry's music is full of atmosphere and intimate passion, perfectly suited for telling stories on the big screen.
