In this episode of the #MoneyMagic Podcast Vangile introduces Karen Bernetti, who shares her expertise on dealing with addiction and its impact on family dynamics and financial trauma. Karen's work focuses on helping families affected by addiction through yoga, meditation, and mindfulness. Karen's journey began with Al-Anon, a 12-step fellowship for families of those struggling with alcohol addiction. She explains how living with someone who has an addiction can lead to various psychological issues like anxiety, depression, and codependency.  Karen emphasizes that families often become enablers or try to control the situation, which only exacerbates the problem. To break the cycle, she suggests mindfulness practices and seeking support through groups like Al-Anon. Karen also delves into the financial impact of addiction on families, sharing her personal experience of divorce and the ensuing custody battle.  She describes how addiction can lead to financial instability, legal issues, and increased stress. Her story highlights the importance of addressing financial trauma and finding ways to heal and rebuild one's life after such experiences. To aid in healing, Karen recommends mindfulness practices such as yoga and meditation, which have been transformative in her own life. I'd love to say that I've learned to love the good and the bad, but part of my own challenge is that I still look at past experiences - especially things I either did or failed to do - through the binary prism of 'right and wrong' or 'good and bad.'  Yoga and Recovery expert Nikki Myers is here to tell both you AND me a story of hope: it IS possible to love the whole. Have you ever wondered what exactly is Yoga For Recovery or Trauma Informed Yoga?  How does it differ from Bikram, Ashtanga, Power Yoga or Kundalini? Can yoga help you heal your mind, body and spirit as you walk away from drinking? How can releasing a traumatic experience from your body through yoga help you heal before illness, chronic fatigue, dis-ease, autoimmune disorders may manifest.    And what about essential oils? How do they work and are they worth the hype? What's the difference between all the different options?  What's the oil of a Buoyant Heart? The Inner Child? Energetic Boundaries? Sexual Healing? Truth and Connection?    Today we're here to answer these questions and more with one of my favorite teachers in recovery, yoga and life: Taryn Strong,    Taryn is a founder of the SHE RECOVERS Foundation - a global grassroots movement currently consisting of more than 300,000 women in or seeking recovery from substance use disorders, other behavioral health issues and/or life challenges.    Taryn is a trauma-informed yoga instructor, recovery coach and an aromatherapist.    Taryn has developed a unique yoga retreat program and led over 40 yoga for recovery retreats since 2012.    She is also the host of the SHE RECOVERS Podcast and most recently created and taught the inaugural trauma informed SHE RECOVERS Yoga Teacher Training  Program.   Taryn identifies as being in recovery from trauma, a substance use disorder and self-injurious behavior and believes that recovery is a journey to wholeness – in which we take care of our mind, body and spirit.   In this episode, you'll learn: Why healing your body is an important part of your sobriety journey.  How essential oils can play a huge role in your recovery How balancing the energy around your heart can help you heal from codependency, isolation, depression, or fear of intimacy. Why a grounding yoga practice can help center you when you're feeling anxious, overwhelmed or unsettled. Taryn's step-by-step morning meditation practice (which can be done without ever leaving your bed!)    A strong yoga practice and essential oils can be an important tool in your "sober toolkit" as a pathway to holistic healing and recovery.   Today we dive into everything you need to know about these practices to get started!   More about Yoga with Taryn https://sherecovers.co/yoga-with-taryn-strong/ As part of her online yoga signature recovery series and online monthly membership Taryn takes you on a gentle, trauma-informed journey of exploration that will help heal your body, mind and spirit.   Taryn offers an extensive library of themed yoga classes online including her six-session signature recovery series below.      Heart Space   Balance the energy around your heart to help heal from codependency, isolation, depression, or fear of intimacy.     Resilience   Resilience is like a muscle – the more life throws at us, the more opportunities we have to strengthen our resilience and thrive.     Grounding Practice   Are you often anxious? In this episode, I am speaking with the founder of @Y12SR (Yoga 12 Step Recovery) Nikki Myers. Nikki realized after 2 relapses, that although both Yoga and 12 Steps programs are both useful in solidifying one’s recovery, she and others like her needed a way to connect the two differing aspects. Yoga, a combination of physical and mental awareness had little to offer her in the cognitive world we are all raised in. The 12 Step programs that we have all around us tend to exist in the cognitive world and lack some of the real hard inner work that yoga focuses on. Her bringing these together has helped millions and as it relates to recovering the self Nikki and I seem to have a lot to talk about. Yoga 12 step recovery is yoga for those of us in recovery more than it is recovery for those of us interested in yoga. These are sessions that begin with a brief check-in, maybe a reading, and share and then we do some dimple mindful yoga movements. Find Y12SR meetings near you wherever you are in the world here https://y12sr.com/ there you will also find ways to get in touch with Nikki and her staff for training and other resources. With episodes like this one, I am extremely grateful. Nikki and I connected in so many ways and I am looking forward to meeting face to face one day when this pandemic passes. I love and respect her approach and how she expresses her recovery. She and I both connect to the same outcomes of our practices which guide us forward in our work of being our own authentic selves. Broadening these conversations is part of my mission. I cannot express how grateful I am to have so many wonderful people trust me to interview them, it is my hope, that I also am able to contribute to their lives and show you how you might better see your growth.
