Imagine feeling so alone that you can't even recognize yourself in the mirror. For many battling addiction, this isn't just imagination—it's their daily reality. In this eye-opening episode of The Addicted Mind Plus, hosts Duane and Eric Osterlind dive deep into the powerful connection between shame, isolation, and addiction. They explore how these forces work together to keep people stuck in a cycle of pain and substance abuse. But there's hope! The hosts reveal that the simple act of connecting with others can be a game-changer in recovery. They discuss how shame, while once useful for keeping early humans in line with their tribes, can become toxic when it fuses with our sense of self. This toxic shame often leads to isolation, which in turn fuels addiction. Duane and Eric highlight the importance of finding safe, supportive communities where people can experience "corrective experiences." These are moments where individuals can feel shame in a safe environment, allowing them to change their relationship with this powerful emotion over time. The hosts draw parallels to the famous "Rat Park" study, which showed how social connection could significantly reduce substance abuse in rats. The episode emphasizes that recovery isn't just about staying sober—it's about connection. Duane and Eric stress the need for both compassion and accountability in supportive communities. They also introduce their new Addicted Mind community, inviting listeners to join and be part of building something meaningful. Whether you're struggling with addiction yourself or supporting someone who is, this episode offers valuable insights into the role of shame and the healing power of community in the recovery process. Today's Nugget of Wisdom is a poem about the healing of addiction - inspired by my own experiences. There is no greater teacher On the art of letting go Than the lessons that addiction Will break your heart to know Deep beneath that master Is a pain for us to feel, An aching from the past And a wound for us to heal, But if we find the courage, To feel the hurt that's here We can wash away the pain With every single tear Soon those broken habits Will gently fall away So we can rise each morning To dance with each new day No longer we are chained By a desperate urge to scream We can let ourselves be free To live and love and dream by Martin Lowndes Go to One Whole Being to receive a free healing session for your heart to feel more love, joy and emotional freedom Additional resources from Martin Book a free 30 minute 1-1 discovery session with Martin Read Martin's new book - the Way of Embracing - a path to joy, love and freedom Listen to his new album of 36 Sound Healings for Sensitive Souls "I secretly love Martin Lowndes and wanted to share my secret love today. They discuss the importance of men's mental health and the challenges of vulnerability. They explore Dan's initial belief that he didn't have a story worth sharing and how he started to embrace his own story. They delve into Dan's childhood experiences, including growing up in a conservative household and the lack of emotional expression. Dan reflects on his parents' relationship and the impact it had on his understanding of love and intimacy. He also discusses his codependency and addiction to gaming, which ultimately led to the end of his marriage. The episode highlights the importance of self-discovery and finding meaning in one's own life. In this conversation, Dan shares his journey of healing and self-discovery. He discusses his struggles with addiction, codependency, and trauma, and how therapy and somatic healing have helped him uncover and process his past experiences. He also highlights the need for more open conversations about men's mental health and the middle part of the healing journey. Dan's story serves as an inspiration for others on their own healing journeys. Takeaways Men's mental health is an important topic that needs more attention and open conversations. You may have heard whispers about EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, which has gained popularity for treating symptoms of trauma, anxiety, and depression. Here to chat with us and shed some light on this form of therapy, we are excited to have Jamie Marich, a leader in trauma recovery. It's a new year and time for reflection, inspiration, and light. It was such a pleasure to meet my new friend Kimberely La Farge, Berlin, LCSW.Kimberley La Farge Berlin, LCSW, is an Integrative psychotherapist, and Level 3 IFS (Internal Family Systems) practitioner specializing in addiction and trauma. She has been providing expert clinical, consulting and training services worldwide for the past 20+ years. Her approach is grounded in spiritual traditions, merging ancient wisdom with modern neuroscience. As a person in long-term recovery, Kimberley knows the struggles of anyone seeking to recover from alcohol and/or other substance use disorders. Her own journey inspired her decades of research, writing, and presentations at regional, national, and international conferences. Kimberley is a former professional dancer, an avid photographer, chef, and gardener. She lives in Leesburg, Virginia, with her husband and four rescue dogs.Kimberley's newest book, titled "Rise in Recovery: The Spiritual Path for Healing AddictionAlcohol and substance abuse disorders have baffled medical practitioners for centuries. Addiction is more than a neurological or physical disorder. It is a malady that eats at the soul. Rise in Recovery: The Spiritual Path for Healing Addiction merges ancient wisdom with neuroscience and introduces the powerful effects of spiritual practices to heal the overall damages of addiction. It answers the questions, “What is spirituality, how do we find it, nurture it, and live it – and how do we apply it to healing from a soul-crushing disease?”Unlike most books on the market that discuss “meditation” as a tool for recovery, this book discusses “spirituality” (of which meditation is a part) as a path to recovery. While neuroscientists have proven that spiritual practices positively affect and heal brain areas, no book has taken the wisdom of ancient spiritual guidance and applied it to treating addiction. It takes a unique and proven approach that breaks through outdated ideas to bring a sea-change in how we can achieve long-term recovery.Be sure to connect with Busy Living Sober! Truth be told, we all feel judgements, pressures, and expectations around alcohol. Whether we drink pop bottles on the weekend or sip mocktails from our patio- everyone feels some sort of stigma around alcohol. Is one drink going to hurt me? Can I just have a few sips so I can fit in? What if I give up alcohol, will I leave behind my happiness and FUN?! Is alcohol a drug, what's really in it and what does it do to my body? These are the questions we answer for you on the show! Like so many of us, we can't see the forest through the trees and I know for fact this is an episode I wish I had when I was taking shots until I could no longer feel any longer. This wonderful conversation featured a few themes, the main one of which is reciprocal opening, or an attitude of always expanding horizons and exploring new experiential territory instead of focusing narrowly on pleasure and its causes. Alex shared his story of addiction, recovery, and discovery. We also talked about dialectic, psychedelics in the context of addiction, spirituality, the question of whether addiction can be completely healed, and more! Estella is a modern day medicine woman with an interesting mixed heritage, currently based in the UK. A mother to three grown-up children, and grandmother to two, she embodies multiple female archetypes through her expression. Her strength and confidence as a leader and space holder shines through in this lively conversation. With a previous career as a yoga teacher and corporate wellbeing practitioner, Estella is very honest about her battles with addiction and how this was a catalyst for her healing journey. Plant medicine has been central to her expansion, and her respect and reverence for our plant teachers is an important key theme of this episode. Estella readily explains how much her life has shifted, into a way of being that truly surrenders to the guidance of spirit. The deep transformation she went through during the 4 day Danza de la Luna in Mexico in 2021, taught her to completely surrender. That trust and receptivity is resulting in a growing community, as well as multiple events, projects and collaborations all focused on connecting us to something beyond our physical reality and conventional lifestyle. Today I had the privilege to have a conversation with Zane Wheeler. Zane is a psychic, healer, and hypnotherapist who shares his experience dealing with addiction in his earlier life. He now has the opportunity to use his past experiences and gifts to help the world.Zane was a victim and willing participant of the opioid addiction in the early 2000's. He accidentally fell into it from being immersed in an environment of people who were in the party scene and partaking in these drugs. He was given the drug oxycontin, not realizing how easy it was to become addicted to it. In 2011, his addiction was so bad that he ended up in the hospital. This is when all the truth prevailed and his family and friends realized he had a serious problem. Zane said, "It was really tarnishing my soul in a lot of ways." At one point, he decided he was probably going to die in the next few years because of his addiction. There was one particular night that Zane had a big shift. He was taking the drug and took too much and felt like he was having a heart attack. In that moment, Zane thought he was going to die. Zane's eyes opened and his heart cleared, returning back to who he really was. That moment he know that the world needed people like him and that life was worth living. Zane got checked into rehab and started connecting back with his psychic abilities. He then got so clear of the magnificent gifts that he was born with and he wanted to use them to help the world. He was able to serve younger men while working through the 12 step program.Fast forward years later Zane is now an inspiration story and is serving people who may be going through the same struggles that he went through. He is now able to utilize his gifts as tools for people who need help. Hypnosis is the modality that allows him to connect with people, heal, and serve the world.Zane is a Certified Clinical and Alchemical Hypnotherapist, Esoteric Life Coach, Consulting Hypnotist, and Somatic Healing Practitioner who has been a student of the healing arts since 2001. He is an esteemed graduate of the Alchemy Institute of Hypnosis, holding accreditations with the National Guild of Hypnotists. He is an avid musician, and a loving husband and father, currently practicing trancework remotely and in-person from the beautiful wine country of northern California.Learn more about Zane and his work at www.zanewheeler.comThanks for listening to this weeks podcast. To learn more about how psychedelic medicines can help heal addiction, Cody interviews doctor Alan Davis, a Johns Hopkins professor, and a plant medicine shaman who healed his addiction with ibogaine, Warren Flesch. (Tine stamps below) Dr. Alan K Davis is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at The Ohio State University and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Psychedelic Research Unit at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Davis's clinical experience includes working with people diagnosed with trauma-based psychological problems such as addiction, PTSD, depression, and anxiety. His clinical expertise includes providing evidenced-based treatments such as motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy. Consistent with his clinical interests, his research interests and expertise focus on contributing to the knowledge of and ability to help those suffering with substance use and mental health problems, understanding how to improve clinical outcomes through examining new treatments, and developing ways to conceptualize substance use and mental health problems through a strengths-based approach. Psychedelic research focuses on clinical trials with psilocybin for people with depression and exploring psychological mechanisms by which psilocybin improves mental health and functioning. Upcoming studies include exploring the use of short-acting psychedelics in laboratory and naturalistic settings and assessing the application of psychedelics in vulnerable populations including people of color who have experienced racial trauma and native Spanish-speaking individuals. In this episode, Kevin and I sit down to have a beautifully authentic conversation about the addictive qualities of familiarity, how to change your behavior, the struggles that all 20s and 30 somethings experience, and more. We talk about how to focus on your confidence, why communication in relationships is so important, what the hardest step to changing really is. Kevin Nahai is a public speaker and personal coach. Diagnosed with an excruciating, incurable stomach disease at 19, he quickly fell into a dark spiral of depression, anxiety, and severe anorexia. With no direction, failed health, and an abysmal love life, it took him 7+ years of therapy and coaching to begin to change his thoughts and actions, overcome his challenges, and create the results he wanted to see. He discovered how to live an extraordinary life; one made of authentic confidence, fulfillment, and beautiful relationships. Now he teaches others how to do the same. @kevinnahai **Trigger Warning: mentions of suicide, addiction, and eating disorders.
