As the much loved footy Season looms with the excitement of packed stadiums team scarves and hot meat pies it's the players the teams that thrill us the most !So we're excited to welcome a major footy legend to the Pod winning countless awards includingthe Brownlow Medal, Norm Smith Medal, Carji Greeves Medal and Leigh Matthews Trophy ·An exceptionally skilled footballer, now director of football at Carlton Diesel Greg Williams - Greg would later become one of the highest-paid player in the AFL. However, as a child in suburban Melbourne, any future sporting career looked impossible. At two-and-a-half years old, Williams' parents, Brenda and Leigh, sought medical opinion on his severely knocked knees. As a result, he wore full-length callipers on both legs until he started school. The intervention worked, and it was only a short time before he began showing significant sporting promise. His football prowess came to the fore when the family moved to Bendigo, and he developed his game with the Golden Square Football Club. As part of the VFL's country zoning scheme, Bendigo belonged to Carlton, and after training with the club in the pre-season of 1982, he returned home with an official letter stating that hDeborah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/what.ive.learnt/Mind, Film and Publishing: https://www.mindfilmandpublishing.com/Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/what-ive-learnt/id153556330Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3TQjCspxcrSi4yw2YugxBkBuzzsprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1365850

The only Tasmanian to win the coveted Norm Smith Medal, Colin Robertson, grew up on a dairy and potato farm in the small north west town of Yolla. The paddocks, with tree limbs for goals posts, were Robertson's equivalent of the MCG and where he honed his skills before starring with Wynard in two premierships. Multiple VFL clubs came calling, but the dashing wingman opted for emerging Hawthorn and quickly became a key member of the side that rose to prominence in the 1980's. Robertson is best remembered for his best-on-ground performance in the 1983 Grand Final, a match in which he knocked out Essendon star Tim Watson in an infamous incident that led to threats on his life.

At the start of 1991, the family club were coming off a season where they had failed to continue in the family tradition, eliminated by Melbourne the previous September to miss their first Grand Final since 1982 - unable to complete a three-peat. As odd as it sounds, their failure to make it to the big one in 1990 sent the club into a tailspin. They had been called too old and too slow in the past – maybe, just maybe, it was now true? When the West Coast Eagles, the new kids on the block, towelled them up at home early into the new campaign alarm bells sounded once more. But sure enough, Michael Tuck’s side got on a roll to finish in second spot on the ladder. Their next mission: a trip across the Nullarbor to take on Mick Malthouse’s hotshots to start one of the most anticipated finals series ever held. All the experience of the battled-hardened Hawks was on display through the month that matters most, overcoming West Coast at Subiaco then just reaching the finish line against Geelong a week later to earn a berth in the Grand Final at VFL Park. The Eagles were now on their territory for the decider. Gary Ayres knows more than most about saving the best for last Saturday in September, twice winning the Norm Smith Medal as best afield in the 1986 and 1988 Grand Finals. By 1991, he was the vice-captain at Glenferrie, hunting his fifth premiership.
