The second of our three Patreon-exclusive episodes is here! Originally published Sep 27, 2023. Backlist: This episode has been a long time coming. Our good friend Raeven stops by to chat about Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera, an extremely formative and influential story for us, the podcast, and YA at large. Which is why it's extremely funny and extremely weird that the novel is largely some sort of Abbot and Costello sketch with the plot of the musical going on in the background. This is gonna be a wild one. Chill: We are all drinking variations of Raeven's Backlist fan drink "Ambigously Brown". Ollie's got the closest to the original recipe: a hot cocoa with oatmilk, Abuelita drinking chocolate, Rumchata, and cinnamon, topped with mocha Whipshot. Cyna went iced: coffee with almond milk, chocolate syrup, Abuelita drinking chocolate, and Rumchata. Raeven's is on the go: this morning's coffee mixed with Abuelita drinking chocolate, Rumchata, and spiced vanilla rum, all dumped into a McCafe iced coffee, Pics! Cyna / Raeven / Ollie As Mentioned: You can find Raeven on Tumblr, Twitter, and A03 for some extremely Backlist-relevant fanfic. Intro theme - "Let It In" by Josh Woodward. (2h 05m. Content Warning: Profanity, alcohol consumption, sexually explicit and generally extremely filthy language, discussion of stalking, sexual harassment, suicide, and self-harm.)

It's a new week, meaning new opportunities in the retail auto industry. Today we're covering why EVs cost more to repair than ICE vehicles, Northwood University's new Master's Degree, and McDonald's new restaurant spinoff.Electric vehicles (EVs) are proving costly to repair after accidents, surprising many owners with high bills and extended repair times.A recent Wall Street Journal article said that repairs for EVs are generally more expensive than gas vehicles due to the need for more replacement parts, complexity, and fewer specialized repair shops. On average, EVs cost $6,587 to repair post-collision, versus $4,215 for traditional vehicles, with insurance premiums also being higher for EV owners ($357/month for EVs vs. $248/month for ICE).Special considerations like lithium-ion battery risks and the use of exotic materials like aluminum in EVs add to repair costs and complexity.According Scott MacFiggen's neighbor backed into his R1T pickup truck last summer, he faced a $22,000 repair bill and 2½ months wait, reflecting a common trend among EV owners.Despite current challenges, signs point to potential cost reductions as spare parts supply increases and more repair shops gain expertise.“People are used to hearing that EVs have fewer parts than a combustion vehicle, but that is not the case in collision repair,” - Marc Fredman, Chief Strategy Officer, CCC Intelligent Solutions. Our friends at Northwood University are launching a first-ever specialized Master of Science in Organizational Leadership, which will provide in-depth exploration of auto industry-specific challenges and leadership skills.Features automotive-focused readings and cases, interactive and experiential learning scenariosFrom the Auto Remarketing article: The program, designed for participants with diverse auto industry experiences, offers a path for graduates of Northwood's automotive marketing management and automotive aftermarket management programs, creating “a unified and comprehensive educational journey,” Northwood said in a news release.Flexible 24 month online format w classes starting on Jan 15th. McDonald's is further unveiling CosMc's, a secretive new restaurant spinoff, stirring intrigue and speculation in the fast-food industry and from one influential tik-tockerBased on a little-known McDonaldland character from the late '80s, CosMc's aims to blend McDonald's core essence with a distinct personality. The first presumed location is in Bolingbrook, Illinois, where a retro-style building and multiple drive-thru lanes can now be seen, hinting at a focus on quick service.Social media buzz suggests a shift towards McCafe-style offerings over traditional fast food, potentially challenging Starbucks.McDonald's has kept details under wraps, planning to reveal more during its investor day conference.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

McDonald's has pulled McCafe Bakery items from their menu. Is this history repeating itself? No, but I go undercover as a long haul truck driver to get to the bottom of it anyway.

Apple fritters, blueberry muffins and cinnamon rolls are among the items disappearing from the menu. The company says it’s been listening to customers and adjusting the menu based on their likes and […]

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: 13 new Existential Risk Movies & TV Shows that should be made – what are your ideas?, published by HaydnBelfield on April 12, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. There's been some interest over the last year or so in movies and TV shows that could be funded in the general areas of global catastrophic risk or longtermism. In December 2021, Don't Look Up became one of the best performing movies ever on Netflix, and has inspired lots of discussion of climate change, raising its salience. I put together a brainstorm of movies and TV shows that I'd like to see funded and made below, and I'd love to hear other people's ideas – get in the comments. Disaster movies remakes/reboots Dr Strangelove is absolutely incredible, and maybe unremakable. But that's never stopped Hollywood before! Its 60 years old, remake it with Steve Carell as the lead. Threads and The Day After are 40 years old, lets do new versions of them – and add what we now know about nuclear winter. These films were apparently very influential on Reagan. Contagion is really good, Outbreak is bad. Let's have more pandemic movies, focused on engineered pandemics – really nailing the case against gain-of-function research. What about a version of Terminator focused only on Skynet? A better version of Transcendence, or a bigger scale version of Ex Machina. Armageddon and Deep Impact are not particularly accurate, but are very engaging. They're 30 years old. Why not new versions of these, but focused on the dual-use dangers of asteroid mining? Or on supervolcanoes? I loved the early episodes of Survivors (1975) set in an empty wasteland Britain after a pandemic has killed 99% of the population. Later episodes are a bit post-apocalyptic The Archers (lots of farming problems) but there are some great episodes about rebuilding civilisation. They remade it in 2008 and it's meh. Remake a better version set in the US. Turn these books into movies/TV shows Richard Rhodes – The Making of The Atomic Bomb. Incredibly cinematic book, honestly surprised it hasn't been adapted yet. I'd want this to be a several seasons-long series. First season is the early dreams of 20th century physics, following Rutherford, Bohr, Fermi, etc. Second season follow Szilárd and others as they escape the Nazis and keep the nuclear chain reaction secret, end with the Einstein-Szilárd letter to Roosevelt. Third season follows the Manhattan Project, ends with Hiroshima and Nagasaki (could be similar to Manh(a)ttan). Daniel Ellsberg – The Doomsday Machine. There's been loads of movies made about him leaking the Pentagon Papers, but none on his much more interesting work on nuclear strategy. You could have the weird intense atmosphere of 1950s RAND, him hopping around the Pacific at various bases realising theres no limits on individual pilots starting WW3, his realisation that the missile gap was a mistake and he's just been increasing nuclear risk for five years, preparing to leak on nuclear weapons but the hidden documents buried in the ground are washed away by a hurricane (!), getting arrested with his son on the train tracks to a nuclear production facility, etc. Cold Dawn (Newhouse) – how the first bilateral restrictions on nuclear weapons (SALT I) were passed. Loads of fun 1970s suits and hairstyles, weird stuff during the negotiations like boating on Lake Geneva, Kissinger as the central character (fascinating antihero). With a possible sequel adapting Endgame (Talbott) in which Rumsfeld betrays Kissinger and kills SALT II. If you want to make a full series out of it, adapt Adler's story of the arms control community from the 40s to the 70s. The Precipice – Toby Ord going through the major existential risks, have one scene of him literally in a McDonalds in Geneva saying “The BWC's budget is smaller than this little McCafe”. Filings in 2022 indicate that one thing about the metaverse is that it will be well fed and well dressed. Companies with a combined market cap of around $1.1 trillion have filed for trademarks related to metaverse and NFTs this year alone. If you include Meta in this discussion, the figure rises to almost $2 trillion. In addition, 1967 NFT-related applications have been filed in 2022 alone. This is already higher than the total for the whole of 2021. However, as we are well aware of Meta's plans due to their rebrand, so lets focus on the lesser-known metaverse players. Brands such as Ralph Lauren, Chevron, McDonald's, Monster, Colgate, WWE, Levis, Playboy, and many more are gearing up to enter the metaverse and protect their intellectual property. For some, registering trademarks in a new space will be a simple legal exercise to ensure their corporate image is protected. However, it is clear from the filings that this is not just about brand protection. Here's a breakdown courtesy of trademark lawyer Mike Kondoudis. You can read the specifics of the trademarks by searching for the serial numbers at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. McDonald's McDonald's is coming to the metaverse. We first reported on this back in February. McDonald's filed to use the names McDonald's, McCafe, and the famous golden arches with a virtual world. They also plan to offer actual and virtual goods through their virtual restaurants. Therefore, it seems that you will be able to walk into a McDonald's in the metaverse, order a BigMac and have it sent to your door in the real world. Victoria's Secret In February, the international lingerie, clothing, and beauty brand, Victoria's Secret, filed for several trademarks, including downloadable virtual goods, digital collectibles, virtual fashion shows, and online clothing, including undergarments. This one feels very NSFW, in all honesty, but what's interesting is that they see an opportunity and a need to ready themselves for a deeper move into the digital world. Post-2020, it is easy to understand the potential market for virtual fashion shows. However, virtual underwear is something metaverse developers themselves may not have considered quite yet. Chevron This is the biggest company outside of Meta to be readying themselves for the metaverse. They have a market cap of over $300 billion and filed for trademarks directly related to NFTs this year. Their application covers NFTs, virtual gas, virtual stores, and virtual renewable energy products. Virtual gas will likely be a tool to run v vehicles in the metaverse. However, I hope brands cannot get a consensus from blockchain validators to add sponsorship to gas transactions fees. Can you imagine every Ethereum transaction forcing a Chevron advert to your wallet? Monster Energy The drinks and beverages brand has often looked to be at the forefront of trends. So their move into the metaverse is less surprising than most. Like McDonald's, they are looking to use their brand to offer NFTs, downloadable virtual food, drinks, and clothing and create a marketplace for virtual goods. With Death Stranding, Monster Energy has already found its way into the gaming world. In the game, Monster is the only source of boosting stamina in the main character's private room. Perhaps we can now expect similar deals with metaverse projects. Other notable brands There seems to be a clear trend within the current trademark applications. Food and beverage brands are all filing to protect their ability to offer virtual restaurants and virtual food. In-game food often relates to health bonuses or regeneration. The ability to be a recognized option for a player to regain their health should offer immense brand awareness among popular games. Dunkin, KFC, Pizza Hut, Hooters, Sonic, Red Bull, Burger King, and Arby's are all restaurants we can expect to see in what is increasingly likely to be a Ready Player One-style metaverse of the future. Another apparent trend is con...
How a sip of espresso at a piazza in Italy transformed the coffee industry in North America. It seems obvious now. But trust me. This idea was crazy. Learn just how crazy it was. You may need to go to Italy for inspiration. David Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners, the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Sample is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is well it's us. But, we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So, here's one of those... [No Bull RV Ad] David Young: Stephen, my notes say, Starbucks today. Now, I don't know. Are we heading to Starbucks? We're going to do the drive through? I've got credit on my Starbucks card. What do you want? Stephen: Five buck lattes. Here we come. David Young: All right. Stephen: You know, the thing that's interesting about Starbucks and we're going to go back to the early days of Starbucks because one of the problems is Starbucks business seems obvious today, but I'm going to tell you, if Howard Schultz back in the early days, came into your office pitching you to invest in Starbucks. You'd probably tell him to get the hell out of your office. So, Starbucks was founded in 71 and Howard Schultz bought it in 1980. At that time, I'm not sure whether it was four or six stores, but it was just a couple of stores in the Seattle area. Today, they have over 30,000 locations. They're doing $25 billion in revenue. They are everywhere, right? And in fact, they've had such an impact on the coffee business. It's even changed how McDonald's, McDonald's, it's created the McCafe's in response to what's going on with Starbucks. Stephen: But, here's the thing, let's go back to the early days, because one of the things we're often talking about in the Empire Builders Podcast is how you got to do things that are bold and different if you want to build an empire. Copying everybody else? Fine, you can get a little bit of growth, but you aren't going to change the world. You aren't going to change your industry and you aren't going to become a billion dollar business doing that. So, let's go back to the early days of Starbucks. And if you want to learn more about the Starbucks story, I recommend reading the book, Pour Your Heart Into It, which is written by Howard Schultz. It's a fascinating story about this business, but here's the thing, if we go back into the early 80's, late 70's, early 80's, the belief in the coffee business was coffee sales were declining overall. Believe it or not, you look at a Starbucks today and look how many young people are in it. Stephen: The demographics for coffee back then were old people, were dying off. The coffee business was dying with its consumer. Coffee prices were declining. A cup of Joe is what coffee was and it was drunk in diners with those linoleum counters and people smoking and the tacky, you remember the tacky little metal trim that was screwed in and some surly waitress. They were located in Seattle and the Seattle economy was poor, was abysmal. Boeing, the largest employer was struggling and laying people off right, left and center. Schultz was in the coffee business and he had just returned from a trip to Italy where he experienced Italian coffee and cafes. And he said, this seems like a good idea for the United States. What I'm going to do is I'm going to charge a premium price for coffee. Remember, coffee prices are declining, the local economy's the shits, your consumers dying off, and I'm going to charge a premium price for my coffee and I'm... Stephen: And I believe the reason why coffee is dying is because we have a crappy product and a terrible experience. And I'm going to change that. I'm going to charge $5. Prices are declining,

The purpose of today's Podcast is talk about how a multi gear - or two speed business can enable better digital maturity. Well first up, what is a multi speed business? It's a business that uses different services or products to create slightly different business models that are moving slower or faster than the current business. Why would a business investigate this type of structure? Often to iron out more volatile cashflow cycles or to open up new market share. But always to solve a problem for their customer ...... For example, a business doing a sales cycle of 6 weeks might create a business line that shortens sales cycle to 1 week, therefore creating a different dynamic across sales, marketing, cashflow and customer service. How can this enable better digital transformation and ultimately a more mature business? Well first, let's look at what a digitally mature business is. Stage 1 - using basic digital tools to improve business operations, eg. email, website Stage 2 - using advanced digital tools to improve business efficiency , eg. cloud storage, e-commerce, social media, IOT / big data. Stage 3 - using digital platforms to transform business operations, eg. ERP, supply chain management, channel sales, CRM Stage 4 - creating new business models on the back of the digital platforms you have and therefore creating a multi speed businessA multi speed business uses digital maturity to spin off new services like cogs in a machine that add value to the core but enable a new customer offering. OK, so what's an example, let's get practical OK - we'll for some shameless self promotion, Blirt has recently launched a service called http://www.cloudmart.com.au It's a good example of a two speed business - customers get fast, quick turnarounds on small and simple CRM projects, whilst we focus on the more complex people intensive projects through our primary consultancy of Blirt. Where else do we see this? One that we'd all know is McDonalds and McCafe.... or Apple with product sales vs subscription sales. In fact, subscriptions are a great way of launching two speed business models. We often talk about new business initiatives as adventures and the world of adventuring has a concept that works really nicely..... explain Expedition vs Light & Fast. We give a big plug to https://patrickhollingworth.com and his book The Light and Fast Organisation What can a business leader do to get practical? Well, think about where you challenges are and where the market opportunities are, at that intersection is where your problem solving should start. Don't start a new venture just because you it sounds like a good idea - it must solve a problem for the customer.
