This week on Hurdle, Emily sits down with Olympic and Indoor World Champion Julien Alfred. The track and field star opens up about navigating the mental ups and downs of elite competition, moving away from home at age 14 to pursue her dreams, and learning how to protect her inner peace amid massive international success and public attention. Julien shares how she overcomes self-doubt, handles the pressure of representing Saint Lucia on the global stage, and why giving herself grace has been key to her growth both on and off the track. IN THIS EPISODE Navigating Mental Rough Patches: Julien reflects on starting the season in a difficult mental space, questioning her abilities, and how stepping back helped her reset and realign. Overcoming Loss & Finding Drive: How losing her father at a young age shaped her resilience and continues to inspire her athletic journey today. Handling High Pressure: What it’s like to carry the expectations of an entire country while learning to focus on her own personal growth and goals first. Protecting Inner Peace: Why Julien steps away from social media and media noise to surround herself with a strong support system that values her for who she is, not just what she accomplishes on the track. The Move at Age 14: The immense sacrifice of leaving Saint Lucia as a teenager for Jamaica to train, and how that leap of faith prepared her for college and professional success. Game Face vs. Real Life: The contrast between Julien’s calm, peaceful personality off the track and her focused, "all business" alter ego on race day. QUOTABLE MOMENTS "I am just such a resilient person, a strong person, that if I'm down for a short time, I know I'm going to find my way to get back to the top." "It's okay to give yourself grace. It's okay to mess up sometimes. That's part of being human." "Small island, big things—you can just do whatever you put your mind to, no matter where you're from." "On the track, I'm a different person. It's all business... There's nothing to smile about until I cross that line first." What do we do when life breaks our hearts and we can't fix the pain for the people we love?In this moving and deeply human episode of Linda's Corner Podcast, I sit down with Brad Wolfe — singer-songwriter, community activist, and founder of Reimagine — to talk about grief, music, storytelling, and how we can transform pain into purpose, connection, and healing.Brad shares the story of his childhood friend Sara, who was diagnosed with a rare pediatric cancer. Faced with the helplessness that so many people feel during tragedy, Brad discovered something powerful: even when we can't make everything better, we can still show up with love. He brought his guitar to the hospital and began singing for Sara, eventually writing a song for her called “Sara's Got a Sunbeam.” Through music, Brad witnessed not only emotional comfort, but even relief from some of Sara's physical symptoms. The experience transformed Brad as well. He realized that helping others creates healing for everyone involved. That journey eventually led to the creation of the Sunbeam Foundation, which has since raised more than $1 million for cancer research. Brad also formed his band, Brad Wolfe & The Moon, debuting alongside Grammy-winning artist Sara Bareilles. We also discuss the powerful story behind Brad's song “Why Wait?” — inspired by his grandmother, Sally Wolfe, one of the last living survivors of The Holocaust and a survivor of Auschwitz concentration camp. Sally lived to be 102 years old and left behind a profound message: life is short, so we must use our time to care for one another, practice kindness, and choose tolerance and compassion. That message became a guiding force in Brad's life and work. Through Reimagine, Brad has helped create one of the largest community movements in the United States focused on grief, healing, mortality, and meaning. Reimagine has hosted more than 4,500 events for over 250,000 people, creating safe spaces where people can share stories about loss, illness, discrimination, violence, heartbreak, and hope.We also talk about the healing power of creativity and storytelling, the role music plays in helping us process difficult emotions, and how even small steps can help us create meaning and purpose from painful experiences. Brad reminds us that while life is fragile and temporary, we still have the opportunity to live intentionally, love deeply, and do what matters most with the time we are given. You can learn more about Brad Wolfe and his work at:Brad Wolfe Official WebsiteReimagineYou can also watch Brad's powerful music video for “Why Wait?” here:Why Wait Music VideoListen, Share, and SupportIf this episode resonated with you, please share it with someone who may need hope today.Be sure to subscribe, leave a rating and review, and help us spread more healing and inspiration to the world.Free Resource for HealingIf you're ready to release stress, calm your mind, and begin healing from within, visit:

Julie Smolyansky, CEO of LifeWay Foods — the largest kefir brand in the country — has one of the most extraordinary stories you'll ever hear. Born in Soviet Ukraine, her family defected behind the Iron Curtain when she was just one year old, arriving in America with $116 and no English. Her mother went on to open Chicago's first Slavic deli — and even brought the very first cases of Nutella to the United States. Her father, longing for the kefir he grew up with back home, eventually built LifeWay Foods from scratch. When Julie was just 27, her father passed away suddenly, and she stepped in as CEO — becoming the youngest female CEO of a publicly traded company in US history. What followed was a decade of immense challenge, personal rock bottoms, and an unshakeable refusal to fail.Kelly and Julie talk about the immigrant work ethic that shaped them both, navigating grief while running a company, the gut-brain connection and why kefir is having its major cultural moment, and what it really means to turn pain into purpose. Plus they make a ridiculously good smoked fish farmer cheese dip live in the kitchen — and yes, it's as good as it sounds. This episode was kindly sponsored by Lifeway Foods. Overcoming Grief Through Creativity and PurposeGuest: Ksenia MerckGrief can arrive in waves—unexpected, overwhelming, and deeply personal. In this moving episode, we sit down with Ksenia Merck, an artist, architect, creative storyteller, and publisher, who shares how she navigated profound loss and transformed grief into a meaningful act of love. After the heartbreaking loss of her mother, Ksenia was soon faced with another devastating blow when her husband, Bill, was diagnosed with cancer and later passed away. Bill left behind an unfinished manuscript. Rather than letting his words fade, Ksenia made it her mission to bring his work to life.Through her vivid illustrations and posthumous publication of Ghostflower, Ksenia honored Bill's legacy in a deeply personal way. As she immersed herself in the manuscript, she recognized pieces of their shared life reflected in the characters and experiences within the story. In many ways, the book became a love letter from Bill to Ksenia—and she responded with a love letter of her own through art.In addition to publishing the book, Ksenia created a companion journal designed to help readers reflect, process, and internalize the themes woven throughout the story. The journal offers space for self-exploration, healing, and personal meaning—an invitation to engage with grief rather than avoid it.Ksenia shares how embracing a creative project became a vital part of her own healing journey. She gently reminds us that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to grief and no set timeline for healing. Instead, she encourages those who are grieving to:Find purpose and meaningHonor the life and legacy of their loved oneExpress grief in a way that feels authenticKeep moving forward, one step at a timeThis episode is a tender reminder that while grief changes us, it can also open the door to connection, creativity, and transformation.

Guided by unwavering faith, a steadfast commitment to his family, and a mindset forged in adversity, Austin now shares his journey and his "GRIT" framework as a sought-after motivational speaker. Honoring those he lost, Austin is dedicated to helping others thrive in the face of adversity and to leaving people and places better than he found them. Takeaways: Purpose is Everything: Austin emphasizes the importance of having a “because” that’s bigger than yourself—his family is his deeper purpose and what keeps him moving forward even during life’s toughest moments. GRIT is a Daily Discipline: Success over the long term is built on daily decisions to show up with growth, resilience, integrity, and a team-first mentality. Austin’s GRIT framework turns adversity into opportunity. Gratitude and Action Go Hand-in-Hand: Practicing gratitude is a conscious choice that can’t coexist with negativity. Pairing this mindset with urgent, intentional action creates real, lasting impact. Sound Bites: “If it’s just for us, we’ll probably throw in the towel, give up. But if we remember that greater purpose, that why...we’ll always be willing to do what it takes to overcome.” “It’s impossible to be truly grateful and very negative at the same time. Those two emotions can’t coexist.” “You may not be the best on the team, but you can be your best for the team.” Quote by Mick: “If you’re not getting better, you’re falling way behind, right?” Connect & Discover Austin: Website: https://austin-hatch.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/austin-hatch-530727a6/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/austin.j.hatch/ Website: Players for Good FOLLOW MICK ON:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mickunplugged/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mickunplugged/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@mickunplugged LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mickhunt/Website: https://www.mickhuntofficial.com Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mick-unplugged/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Loss. Heartbreak. Despair. They can leave us feeling like the pieces will never come back together again. But what if those broken pieces are exactly what God uses to rebuild something stronger, deeper, and more beautiful? In this episode, we dive into what it means to walk through heartbreak and loss without losing hope. We talk honestly about the weight of grief, the depth of disappointment, and the quiet ache of unanswered prayers. But we also speak life—about God's nearness in our pain, His promise to heal the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and how no sorrow is wasted in His hands.Whether you're in the middle of your darkest valley or walking with someone who is, this conversation will remind you that God is still writing your story. There is purpose in the pain, healing ahead, and joy that will come again.Song: Lofi Chill Hip Hop Beat - SpringVibes (youngfrenchy808)We would like to pray for you. Send us a textFacing the death of a loved one can shatter our world and challenge our deepest beliefs. When Ken's mother passed away after a four-year battle with cancer, he found himself wrestling with profound theological questions. Despite believing in divine healing and standing on promises from Scripture, his mom transitioned to heaven at age 69, leaving him to navigate complex emotions of grief, faith, and acceptance. This raw, heartfelt conversation explores the mystery of death from a biblical perspective, reframing it not as a fearful end but as a transition between realms. "I didn't lose her," Ken shares, "I know exactly where she is. She's with Jesus." For believers, death becomes less a tragedy and more a graduation—painful for those left behind but joyful for those who've entered eternity free from suffering.Tabatha vulnerably shares her own journey through the fear of death during her cancer battle, describing how studying near-death experiences and Scripture transformed her perspective. "I am not afraid to die," she testifies. "This is a promotion. This is someplace that we are all going." Their discussion demystifies what happens when we die, offering comfort through biblical truths that affirm continued existence, reunion with loved ones, and the promise of new bodies. The most powerful moment comes when Ken discusses Hebrews 11:13, which speaks of those who "died in faith, not having received the promise." His mother exemplified this—maintaining unwavering faith despite not seeing her healing manifested on earth. "I can't make a healing come," Ken reflects. "I'm the mailman; I deliver the package, but I can't make the package. God is the one who heals."Whether you're actively grieving or seeking to understand death from a faith perspective, this conversation offers both compassion and clarity. The hosts remind us that while grief is natural, we don't grieve like those without hope. Your tears are valid, but they need not be permanent. He details their experience with their boat, which kept breaking down, leading to a delay in their sailing plans. Carlos and Alex received multiple confirmations from God that they should move to Tennessee, including a random offer to sell their boat. Linda finds the story inspiring and relates it to her own plans to visit Tennessee for a charity event. Challenges and Passion in Filmmaking  Carlos discusses the challenges and excitement of working with his friends on their production company, Good for You Entertainment. He explains that despite disagreements, their passion for making family-friendly content drove them to overcome obstacles. Linda shares a similar experience with her son, who faced challenges in managing personalities while directing a movie. Carlos clarifies that their movie will be released on Great American Family, not Hallmark, and expresses pride in their work. Filming at the AT&T Stadium  Carlos describes the unique experience of filming a scene in the AT&T Stadium, which was arranged by Bill Abbott, the CEO of Great American Family. He recalls the excitement of having the entire stadium to themselves for 12 hours, with no restrictions on movement or filming. Linda is impressed by the grandeur of the setting and the Christmas decorations, adding to the movie's appeal. Carlos shares that the movie will be set in Tennessee, despite the initial plan to film in Bridget Stone Arena. Their Love Story and Relationship Advice  Carlos and Alexa met at a Bible study, and Carlos knew from their first hangout that he wanted to marry her. He advises others to seek a relationship with God first, as he did, and to stay true to themselves, as they will eventually find their love story. Linda appreciates Carlos's advice and shares her admiration for their deep connection and faith. Carlos emphasizes the importance of soul and heart connections in a relationship, sharing a personal story about waiting until marriage to have sex. Linda acknowledges Carlos and Alexa's significant loss this year and praises their resilience and faith. Carlos credits their faith for helping them through difficult times, especially after losing their baby, Indy. He highlights the importance of sharing their experiences to inspire change and encourages others to find strength in their own testimonies.
