Welcome to the last episode of season nine of Nursing Uncensored! This hour-long interview recorded in June of 2022, is also the last one recorded when Nursing Uncensored Headquarters was located in Minneapolis, MN, making it a fitting end to the season.Adrianne engages in a conversation with experienced nurse and educator Audrey Snyder, who formerly served as the Dean of Practice and Innovation for the College of Nursing at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro and has now been appointed as the Associate Dean for Community Engagement and Academic Partnerships in the same institution. The discussion revolves around nursing education, encompassing its evolution over time and its future prospects.Dr. Snyder's viewpoints offer a fascinating and insightful dialogue. She emphasizes the significance of nursing education is centered around the community and technology and outlines the modifications required to cater to the needs of upcoming students as well as the struggling healthcare sector. Some key points they elaborate upon are:The healthcare model should prioritize disease and injury prevention, not just treatment.Nurses' roles and skills should be viewed differently on a global scale.Nursing education should prioritize critical decision-making and interpersonal communication. The advantages and disadvantages of online learning are discussed.Telehealth has benefits for both providers and patients. The challenges faced by first-generation and non-traditional college students are acknowledged. From start to finish, this episode is stuffed with interesting information and stories. Not only was Dr. Snyder a joy to converse with, but she also sent Adrianne a charming gift after the interview. The gift consisted of a pair of starfish-shaped silver earrings, and the story behind it will warm your heart, so be sure to listen to the whole conversation. Adrianne expresses her sincere gratitude to Dr. Snyder for everything. If you'd like to connect with Dr. Snyder LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/audrey-snyder-bb57283bTwitter: @AudreySnyderPhD

In this episode, Adrianne welcomes clinical psychologist and president of the Sufi Psychological Association, Saloumeh Bozorgzadeh PsyD to discuss the current burnout nurses are facing and how she and her organization have responded to this problem. This is the part of this pandemic where many healthcare workers are maxed out and suffering from exhaustion. Many may not notice the symptoms in themselves because so many are just keeping afloat in the day-to-day. It may be easier to recognize it in each other and that's exactly what Saloumeh saw. She was noticing a kind of shellshock among hospital nurses and wanted to bring something to them to combat the effects of overwhelming stress, the witness of suffering, and overwork due to short staffing. But it had to be there in the moment, in the hospital, with no pressure on them to go home and have yet something else to do. Thus Caring 4 Our Caregivers Initiative came to be. Please enjoy this episode where they discuss:- the Initiative and its grassroots beginnings- the delayed effects of pandemic stress on nurses- the how tablets became the vehicle for stress relief- the study regarding spirituality-integrated psychology- how this initiative spread to hospitals nationwide- the scientific evidence of these modalitiesYou can learn more at caring4ourcaregivers.org--------------Want more nursing-related content?

In this episode, Adrianne welcomes back returning guest Dr. Iman Abuzeid, CEO and co-founder of Incredible Health. You may remember Dr. Abuzeid’s first appearance on the show when they discussed the nursing shortage in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, their conversation dives into the effects the ongoing pandemic has had on the nursing profession and the mental health of individual nurses. They also explore new features Incredible Health has added to their platform to support nurses and their well-being. A free social platform strictly for nurses encourages support and networking in a safe space, while the free online journal gives nurses space to inventory their emotions and burnout symptoms. Please continue reading the press release from Incredible Health about these new features on their already fantastic platform. Incredible Health, a career marketplace for connecting hospitals to much-needed, permanent nursing talent announced the launch of two new products aimed to support the mental health of nurses on its platform: an exclusive social network for nurses and a daily journal. Nurses have faced indescribable physical and mental hardships during the pandemic, from higher rates of exposure and mortality to increased reports of burnout and degradation of mental health, and these platform enhancements aim to reduce the burden on frontline workers.According to a recent study of New York-based healthcare workers during the COVID-19 peak in April, nurses were among those reporting the highest levels of stress with 64% of nurses and advanced practice providers reporting symptoms of acute stress - ranging from nightmares to inability to stop thinking about the virus. To meet the mental health needs of nurses, Incredible Health’s new products include:The Incredible Health Nurse Community: A free online community built exclusively for nurses. This online community offers nurses a safe place to support one another during periods of stress and uncertainty by leaning on those who understand what they are going through. Nurses have the option to post to the Nurse Community anonymously to get the advice & support they need without fear of employers seeing the content. Conversations happening in the community range from advice on how to transition between specialties to strategies for coping with workplace stress and burnout. A Daily Nurse Journal: A free digital journal platform.Incredible Health created a digital journal feature where nurses take inventory of their emotions with structured daily prompts designed to help them process stress more effectively. Nurse burnout was a pervasive problem even before the pandemic, with 54% of nurses in a recent study reporting some burnout symptoms. A study in the Journal of Nursing Education and Practice shows that written reflection has a positive effect on the ability of nurses to handle stress, burnout, and trauma/compassion fatigue.Thank you to Dr. Abzeid for being such a lovely guest and to Incredible Health for continuously seeking new ways to improve the lives and work of nurses across the country. ----------------https://www.buymeacoffee.com/NUPodcastWant more nursing-related content?

This week we are joined by Molly Hillig Rodriguez, RN, BSN, MPH, CEO of Empower Yourself Coaching. She reached out to Adrianne to discuss the very sensitive, yet important topic of suicide among nurses and how we work to prevent this tragedy. According to an article from Nurse.org, nurses are four times more likely to commit suicide than individuals not working in healthcare (Yazdi, 2017). The combination of physical, emotional, mental and financial stressors is a real threat to the well-being of our frontline healthcare providers. Molly and Adrianne discuss the imperative need for suicide prevention programs in healthcare institutions and the much-needed involvement of nurse leaders. They highlight ways leaders can reduce suicide risk among nursing staff, how individuals can identify signs of increased suicide risk, and how to be a support to someone who is struggling.
