What a way to go, we're still ranking for a bus that we missed years ago! The Black Band T-Shirt chaps are back with another Top 5 episode, this time doing their favourite songs of Mancunian progsters Oceansize! Inspired by Vennart's headline slot at Portals festival which he unfortunately had to pull out of, we revisit BritRock for the second time and review the excellent Portals festival. We'll update our Spotify Rank Bank playlist shortly after release with our Top 5s and tracks from some of our favourites at Portals festival, engorging this already 500+ song behemoth. Shuffle for a wonderful time! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7GZMXr0eHTICa0TcZ3AYsE?si=UxHqXbAATdq2RyWgtF2Bcw&dl_branch=1 You can follow Ollie on Twitter @olliexcore and Chris on @cmgrumps. We play in a band called My Eyes Are Old and Bent doing a blend of post-metal and post-hardcore (seems perfect for Portals…
I miss the comfort in being ranked! Ollie and Chris round off their Nirvana rankings quite obviously with In Utero and Nevermind, along with their The Nicher The Better top 5 on songs ruined by Weird Al Yankovic and our usual shoutouts. We apologise for dips in and out of sound quality, we were experiencing technical difficulties on this one. Hope you've enjoyed our first of hopefully a few visits to Seattle, join us next time to hear our top 5 Oceansize songs with a review of Portals festival (just to go against the point of those episodes being shorter). To get that in your ears on release, subscribe on your favourite podcatcher and while you're there, a 5* review and a recommendation to a pal would be lovely
We speak to Chris Sheldon, an Engineer, Mixer and Producer who has worked on some of the most influential rock records of the last 30 years. After serving an apprenticeship at various London studios through the 80s he produced the million selling debut album, troublegum, by cult british rock band Therapy! A couple of years later his relationship with super-producer Gil Norton led to him producing the Colour and The Shape for the Foo Fighters. Not content with 2 of the greatest rock records of the nineties on his CV, he started the noughties by returning to the production chair for the first 3 albums by multi platinum rock trio Biffy Clyro (Personal favourites of this podcast) as well as other records by Oceansize, Feeder and My Vitriol. Into the twenty-tens he's stuck mainly with mixing, but returned to his first love of engineering to work alongside Giles Martin, George's son, on the Elton John film musical Rocketman. We heard about all of this and more, but started with that incredible Foo Fighters record and how Dave and Gil built their relationship with Chris as well as how it's legacy still resonates through the years. Click here for a playlist of Chris' work The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. Andy Farrow, manager of Opeth, Devin Townsend, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Bloodbath, Anathema and The Wildhearts, unpacks three decades of experience in an episode that digs deeeeeep into the business. The importance of bands getting their master tapes back, licensing deals, filling in those PRS sheets, 'syncs' with gaming companies and, finally, an explanation of what 'publishing' actually means.Pulling festival favours from Devin, setting up a merch company with Opeth, Zoom calls about Anathema's "indefinite hiatus" and his expectations of a domestic-focussed touring future for his bands. There's some Terrorvision, Oceansize, Skindred, 65daysofstatic, Sons of Apollo, Anaal Nathrakh, Cult of Luna and Carcass chat thrown in for good measure. And would he consider organising a seated Bloodbath show?A masterclass in everything you didn't know about the metal business. #damnationvs #andyfarrow For further info on Damnation Vs, or Damnation Festival visit:damnationversus.buzzsprout.comdamnationfestival.co.ukfacebook.com/damnationfestivalinstagram.com/damnationfestivaltwitter.com/damnationfest*Please like, subscribe, comment and engage.

Mike @vennart is known to be brutally honest about pretty much everything. He did not disappoint in our chat with him. We cover early musical influences, feeling like an outsider, the unconcious evolution of Oceansize, and all that has come after. Thanks so much Mikey!
Listen to us give birth thanks to Jim on this birthday bonus extravaganza. Oh, we also review an Oceansize album too.
In this episode, we unearth the ridiculous, hilarious and heart-warming tale of Charlie Barnes turning from "fan to man”... told via approximately 568 swear words and his heroes, Mike Vennart and Steve Durose of Oceansize. Due to Charlie's relentless dedication to the band, a whole host of unbelievable occurrences have taken place over the past 17 years; from playing onstage with a member, being signed to the same label, even having one of the band produce his album, and finally reaching career equilibrium as touring musicians respectively for chart-toppers Bastille and Biffy Clyro. As well as a hell of a lot of ‘pinch me' moments, we explore the profound effect fan and band have on each other, still to this day. Turns out sending that letter to your idol could actually change their perspective on a song, and getting that tattoo of their lyrics might just end up making their day 15 years later, while they watch you on-stage at Glastonbury... Wild!
Show #678 features a spotlight on Oceansize's 2010 release, Self Preserved While The Bodies Float Up.
Here's a little extra slice of the Mike Vennart Podcast.
This week we have a Mike Vennart from Manchester progstars 'Oceansize' on the show. We talk Biffy Clyro, Glastonbury, Pledge Music and more....
The humility and truly humble nature of the TickyOff Boyz is what many people believe has led to their vast success in life, and in podcasting. Sure, there's the wonderful humanitarian work they do. There's Sam's work with people affected by ghost hauntings or James's selfless support of people who look like horses to name but two. These vast achievements on behalf of humankind itself generally fly under the radar completely because Sam and James don't do them for the recognition, the fame, the well wishes or the financial reward. They do these things because they are probably two of the greatest human people ever to have lived. You wouldn't know it to meet them though, they'd just shrug and bat away any compliments. ‘It's just who we are' they'd say. 'It's just what we do' they'd say. You'd be honoured to be in their presence and you'd be left with more questions than answers. How can two people be that kind, that handsome and that successful yet also that pure of heart and endeavour? It's incredible. They really are very special indeed. All of these qualities are in full effect on this week's episode. Sam has been digging a river and named it after himself. James has a Vicks stain on his teeshirt which only adds to his raw sexuality. There is a fascinating discussion of names, learning from burning, and James keeps naming members of semi-obscure British rock band of the early Noughties, Oceansize. Then comedian, rival food podcaster and heavy music fan Ed Gamble arrives and two mouths become three, like viral bacteria multiplies but in an aural sense. Ed talks about his start in comedy, 'Big Train', dressing like a rabbit (consensually) and why he may or may not be wearing chainmail underwear. There's also a discussion about sensitivity in comedy, the fall of Louis CK and what the most metal of woodwind instruments might be. Somehow they also manage to fit in Dungeons And Dragons, dal, Ed's fiancee burning a Jamaican curry, James names yet more members of semi-obscure British rock band of the early Noughties, Oceansize, and Sam flat out demands that Ed picks a pulse. This is God's work, if God is in fact two boyz named TickyOff. Humanity, you are welcome. This week's episode is sponsored by an incredible bag of wine from dropwine.co.uk. Buy it and drink it. It helps.
With just 31 days left of 2018, Steve and Remfry delve into albums released over the past 11 months that they missed first time around. In the first part of this two part round-up, the boys look at albums by The Armed, itoldyouiwouldeatyou, Louise Lemón, Ovlov, Kississippi, Ólafur Arnalds and Twenty One Pilots.Elsewhere, Remfry sat down with current Vennart/ex-Oceansize main man Mike Vennart to discuss his top five Iron Maiden songs. Remfry stuck around to review the show as well as shows from Pijn, Mogwai, Earthtone9 and Pitchshifter, whilst Steve went to see Therapy?. Plus, this week’s trade-off is The Smashing Pumpkins’ 2011 Oceania for Sugar’s Copper Blue. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week, Stephen and Remfry are putting two + two together as they get all mathematically minded whilst reviewing ArcTanGent 2018… well, Remfry does. Unfortunately, Steve didn’t put his workings in the margins and consequently turned up late and left early. What a plonker!Elsewhere Remfry goes ballistic after seeing The Fever 333’s debut demonstration in London mere hours before the show was recorded and Steve goes stark raving bonkers over the new album from Mantar, as well as giving us a history lesson in art so offensive, even the Nazis disapproved of it!The boys also review new albums from Jesus Piece and Leeched and verdicts are given on the latest Album Swap; Entombed’s Same Difference and Oceansize’s Effloresce. Plus comment is given on the new single from Sheffield metalcore abandoners Bring Me The Horizon. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
