The Bloodsword series is a set of gamebooks which take place in the world of Dragon Warriors, the classic roleplaying game written by Dave Morris and Oliver Johnson. It's great that they are available again but do they bring anything fresh to the table? The first book, Battlepits of Krarth, tips its hat to Deathtrap Dungeon and has art by the great Russ Nicholson (who seems to have been a regular feature on the podcast lately). There's no less than four different characters to play and a whole host of additional combat rules. Listen along to find out if more is more in this instance.
Oliver Johnson, the synthesizer maestro better known as Dorian Concept, graces our latest episode with tales of musical evolution from "failed jazz artist" to electronic music luminary. Renowned for his collaborations with Thundercat, MF Doom and Flying Lotus, Johnson opens up about his unorthodox journey and the creative philosophies that guide him. We journey through the making of his latest EP, "Music from a Room Full of Synths," recorded at the Swiss Museum for Electronic Music Instruments, where jazz, funk, and hip-hop merge with club sounds.Another topic that came up was on how Dorian navigates artistic identity and societal expectations, revealing how personal experiences can forge a path to authenticity. From childhood piano lessons that prioritized play over pressure, to encountering musical influences that shaped his tastes. If you like what I'm doing with Lost and Sound, please like, rate, review or subscribe to the show on your podcast app of choice – it really does help."Music for a Room Full of Synths” is out now, check it out here. Logarithms were perhaps once thought of as just an old-fashioned way to do sums on slide rules. But they underpin much of modern life, from modelling the COVID pandemic to Claude Shannon's mathematical theory of information (which makes mobile phones a reality) and making sense of Cristiano Ronaldo's crazy Instagram follower numbers. This lecture will explore the basics and history of logarithms, and then show how they are a natural way to represent many models and datasets. This lecture was recorded by Oliver Johnson on 22nd May 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonThe transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/logarithmsGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. Oliver Johnson aka Dorian Concept will release his new album What We Do For Others on 28th October on Brainfeeder Records. It's the third studio album by the Austrian producer and synthesizer savant, famed for his singular, beautifully detailed sonic tapestries and wild, utterly joyful live keyboard jam videos. What We Do For Others is a relaxed, quietly confident and intimate record, founded on delightfully loose arrangements, feedbacked soundscapes and blessed with snatches of cryptic vocals that are presented more as additional instrumentation rather than lyrical phrases. All the elements and layers were recorded without interruptions and deliberately not edited. “I think that's why this record has something of a ‘band sound'” says Oliver. “It's me playing all kinds of different key- instruments, singing and using fx-units to create these freeform compositions.” The title came to Oliver in a dream and stuck with him. “One thing I often find interesting about my creative process is that when I believe to be making something that others could like, it tends to not really connect with people,” he says. “Whereas when I get to that special place and just work from my gut – the music tends to often speak to the outside world naturally.” Johnson says that he tried questioning his internal voice of self-judgment and temper his constant urge for improvement during the making of the album. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Dorian's earliest memories of being introduced to music through film soundtracks such as Batman Returns (1992) Sound synthesis The earliest influences on Dorian Dorian being influenced by Dj Spinna's “Heavy Beats Vol. 2” in his youth Experimenting and improvising with Micro Korgs Dorian learning how to play the piano around the age of 6 Prepared piano The importance of having teachers that can nurture one's individual creativity Connections between music and video games 8 to 16-bit music used in early console games Psychedelics Set and setting Questioning one's perspective on using time The intentionality of decisions made throughout one's life The compulsion for creating art Dorian's reasons for choosing to become a professional artist His new album “What We Do For Others” His track, Survival Instinct being the “heartpiece” of his album Drawing parallels between creating a sculpture and creating music Presenting complex points of view to a wider audience Commercialization vs. arthouse creations Breaking rules and questioning the process Paradigm shifts in one's own unique consciousness Dorian creating lo-fi music videos for himself with the use of archival footage and processed through Blender Artists Mentioned: Dimlite (Musician) Mike Slott (Musician) Tupac (Rapper) DJ Spinna (DJ) John Coletrain (Saxophonist) Edgard Varès (Composer) Aphex Twin (Musician) Little Snake (Musician) artistdecoded.com dorianconcept.com

Episode Forty features Peg Alston. For nearly four decades since establishing Peg Alston Fine Arts, she has emerged as this country’s foremost private dealer specializing in works by African American artists and other artists of African descent, as well as select pieces of traditional African sculpture. In addition to handling art created by gifted emerging and mid-career artists, Peg Alston has sold works by some of the most renowned 20th Century Black masters, including Aaron Douglas, William H. Johnson, Laura Wheeler Waring, William T. Williams, Horace Pippen, Charles White, and Elizabeth Catlett. She has also sold works by some of the leading names on the contemporary scene, among them: Sam Gilliam, Richard Yarde, Betye Saar, Howardena Pindell, Frank Bowling, Ronald Burns, Edward Clark, David Driskell, Al Loving, Lubaina Himid, Oliver Johnson, Faith Ringgold, and Raymond Saunders. Peg Alston emerged on the New York art scene in 1972, a time when art by African Americans was limited. Early giants such as Romare Bearden and Norman Lewis generously served as informal mentors during the beginning stages of her career. Thanks to her keen eye and tastes, commitment to her specialty, and dedication to educating the public through lectures and activism, she has played a pivotal role in cultivating an interest all around the country for investing in African American fine art, and formed close associations with many of today’s most important African American artists. Long active with theStudio Museum in Harlem and many other major New York City cultural institutions, Peg Alston organized some of the first seminars on collecting, appraising and cataloguing African American art. Today, Peg Alston is a member of the Private Dealer’s Association (PADA) and ArtTable, and recently had the honor of being interviewed by History Makers for their visual and oral archival collection. http://www.pegalstonfinearts.com/ https://www.thehistorymakers.org/biography/peg-alston-41 https://www.instagram.com/pegalston/?hl=en

On the podcast this week, Mike welcomes Oliver Johnson, the founder of Soleil Sound (formerly – and still lovingly by many – called The Hive), which is a music and post-production studio complex in Toronto that has been an instrumental part of the Toronto creative community for more than 20 years. In fact, in a recent conversation, Polaris Prize-shortlisted producer Junia-T told Mike that Oliver is one of the unsung heroes of Toronto music community and credited the uniquely creative and collaborative environment at Soleil Sound for making it possible to create his acclaimed album Studio Monk. It’s for that reason that Mike reached out to Oliver to get the story behind the studio and find out how he created this unique space that has attracted K’naan, Glenn Lewis, and so many other beloved artists. Mike and Oliver also discuss the major financial challenges facing recording studios in major cities and a bunch more. Oliver is also one of the founders of Nagamo Publishing, is the first Indigenous production music library and composer agency. He encourages Indigenous creators to contact them if they’d like to get involved in production music industry and have their music licenced. More at www.nagamo.ca.
In 2014, Oliver Johnson was a 28 year old British doctor, working on health policy in Sierre Leone after finishing medical school. Also working in Freetown was Sinead Walsh, then the Irish Ambassador to the country. Then the biggest outbreak of Ebola on record happened in West Africa, starting in Guinea and quickly spreading to Liberia, Sierre Leone and Nigeria. Oliver and Sinead have co-authored a book about the change that wrought on their lives, how they stepped into roles coordinating the international response to the disease and running a treatment centre. They join us today to talk about their experiences there. For more information about Ebola, including the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo visit https://www.bmj.com/ebola. For Sinead and Oliver's book - Getting to Zero: A Doctor and a Diplomat on the Ebola Frontline is available now. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DFLFF9P/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1
Surge Radio's coverage of the 2019 SUSU Spring Elections continues with interviews from candidates running for both Student Officer and Student Leader positions.
On August 1, 2018 the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ministry of Health announced the 10th Ebola virus outbreak since 1976 had been confirmed in the country’s North Kivu Province. Senior Director of Emergency Health at the International Rescue Committee, Michelle Gayer, noted this outbreak has, “the potential to be the worst ever seen in East Africa—and risks being an encore of history we simply cannot afford.” Health workers face a number of challenges delivering medical and preventative care in this context, exacerbated by high numbers of operational armed groups and rumors that the outbreak is politically fabricated to decrease voter turnout in the country’s upcoming elections. New options for treatment and lessons learned from the 2014 West Africa Ebola crisis can provide insight for aid workers on the frontlines of this latest outbreak. In this episode, Ambassador Sinead Walsh and Dr. Oliver Johnson discuss their new book, "Getting to Zero: A Doctor and a Diplomat on the Ebola Frontline," which explores the shortcomings of the 2014 response, as well as suggestions for improvement in future outbreaks. They are joined by Patrick Vinck, the Director of Research at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, who is currently conducting research on the outbreak in the DRC.
The Ebola virus exploded in West Africa in 2014, causing the deaths of over 11,300 people. Sinead Walsh was there, serving as Ireland's ambassador to Sierra Leone, and she witnessed first-hand how the international humanitarian system operated, and failed to operate, under the toughest of circumstances. Getting to Zero, the book Walsh has co-written with Oliver Johnson, a British doctor who ran an Ebola isolation unit in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, is a powerful account of the struggle to bring the outbreak under control. She talked to Ruadhan Mac Cormaic for The Irish Times.

En 1976 grabó Man Of The Light en compañía de Joachim Kühn, Cecil McBee, Billy Hart y Jasper Van't Hoff.
