Historian Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc has just produced Burn Them Out, a history of the Irish far-right. One of its most intriguing chapters studies the Blueshirt movement, tracing its development from an association of veterans into something much broader. Studying intelligence files and reports, Ó Ruairc demonstrates the surprising level of violence associated with this movement around the country. So, was Eoin O'Duffy's so-called ‘March on Dublin' ever a serious proposal, and what could have happened on the streets of Dublin in August 1933? This week U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to the Caribbean, where he will visit Jamaica, Guyana and Suriname. Having already traveled to Central America and the Dominican Republic in February, this is Rubio's second trip to the hemisphere in the two months since President Donald Trump returned to the White House on Jan. 20. Trump himself has already demonstrated his new administration's focus on expanding Washington's power, influence and perhaps even territory in the Western Hemisphere. Among his first acts after taking office was to sign an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America," though few besides the U.S. government's official agencies refer to it as such. And he initially threatened to take control of the Panama Canal, though that topic has receded as a focus of his attention in recent weeks. In a similar way, Trump and Rubio are bringing more bluster than substance to Caribbean policy, which is a mistake. While the region is given short shrift in terms of time and attention by all U.S. administrations, the Caribbean's current list of urgent priorities is lengthy. As a result, regional leaders are intent on making the most of Rubio's visit. They spoke multiple times last week in preparation for it, and Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley plans to be in Jamaica to represent all the Caribbean island nations when Rubio arrives. Arguably, climate change could be considered the region's biggest challenge. But given the Trump administration's environmental policies, arguing over that issue would be a fruitless pursuit and take away time from things that all sides can negotiate and perhaps even agree on. Next on the agenda should be Haiti, a country without an elected government where gangs continue to expand their power and territorial control, armed with weapons that mainly originate in the United States. A Kenyan-led peacekeeping mission deployed to the country continues to lack the resources necessary to make a dent in the security situation, meaning that Haiti is a continuing source of instability for the region. Yet, while Haiti is probably the second-biggest regional challenge, it too will likely not feature much in Rubio's discussions, as each island in the Caribbean has its own individual domestic concerns that may take precedence over the bigger picture. One issue many Caribbean leaders are itching to bring up is the Trump administration's crackdown - led by Rubio - on their payments to Cuba as part of Havana's longstanding practice of sending its doctors abroad as a revenue-generating development scheme. Cuban doctors are a fixture in many Caribbean countries that find the arrangement to be an affordable way to plug gaps in their own health care systems. Now the U.S. government is threatening to sanction governments that participate in the program, including visa bans to keep their leaders from entering the United States. Supporters of Havana's doctors-for-hire scheme, including several Caribbean nations, point to the fact that Cuban doctors receive excellent medical training. The doctors are sent to work in locations where medical assistance would otherwise be unavailable. Their training and focus on preventative medicine and health policy often benefits communities beyond individual doctors' visits, as does the fact that they stay with communities for months or even years, far longer than U.S. programs that bring hospital ships or medical personnel for a brief visit of a week or two. Critics of the program highlight the abuses that the doctors and their families face. Cuba pockets the revenue the program generates, while barely paying the doctors that do the work. Often, the doctors' families are held hostage back in Cuba to ensure they do not defect once they are overseas. Beyond that, the medical care is inconsistent. While some of Cuba's doctors are top-tier physicians and researchers who could practice medicine anywhere in the world, others are spies who could bar...

It seems like President Trump has proposed some new kind of tariff every day that he's been in office so far. Some are happening, others were just bluster. Things are a little different this time, as other nations have prepared to strike back quickly if Trump ignites another trade war. Dairy farmer Hans Breitenmoser talks about the impact on Wisconsin farming and exports if things go sideways again. Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news the US is today moving from a prosperous and strong four years into an unknown future; the age where billionaires get all the gains. Markets are showing caution, especially the bond market which is likely to be the most reliable predictor of what is to come. And the USD fell. It is all very fluid. And in the US, it seems the 'promise' of immediate tariffs on his first day in office isn't going to happen. The Trump team now says it plans to direct federal agencies to study trade relations with China and other countries without imposing new tariffs on his first day in office. But the tariff uncertainties and their threats to inflation control remain. One thing he did re-promise in his speech today is war with Panama, committing to seize the Panama Canal. (Almost certainly, that will start work on a wider, more efficient alternative canal in another country.)In Canada and in a central bank survey of firms taken in mid-November, after the Trump victory and before the Trudeau resignation, Canadian businesses were girding for a rocky relationship with the US marked by higher costs and new tariffs. But they were seeing improved demand. And if they can navigate the new US policies, they seem confident businesses there will improve.Across the Pacific, Japanese released machinery order data yesterday for November and that brought a much stronger result than expected. Excluding volatile items like ships and power companies, they rose +9.5% from the same month a year ago to a nine month high. And for the first time in more than a year, that propelled the annual levels to a small +1.2% gain. The recent strength comes on top of a good result for October as well.China held its loan prime rates unchanged yesterday at its January review. The one year LPR, the benchmark for most corporate and household loans, remains at a record low 3.10% and their 5 year, the benchmark for mortgages, stays at a record low 3.60%.In Australia, and following its pull-out of personal banking in New Zealand, HSBC is said to be considering doing the same there for its much larger retail banking operation. The UST 10yr yield is now at just on 4.58%, and down -4 bps from this time yesterday. The price of gold will start today at US$2707/oz and up +US$5 from yesterday.Oil prices are down -US$1.50 at just over US$76.50/bbl in the US while the international Brent price is now just under US$80.The Kiwi dollar starts today just under 56.6 USc and up +70 bps from this time yesterday. Against the Aussie we up +30 bps at 90.4 AUc. Against the euro we are unchanged at 54.4 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today just on 67.1 and up +30 bps from yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$106,643 and up +1.9% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been very high at +/- 4.8%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour Host Scot Bertram is in for Jim. Join Scot and Greg as they discuss Florida's rising enrollment numbers in public school alternatives, the disastrous situation on the Gaza pier, and Transportation Sec. Pete Buttigieg's lackluster explanation for the mere seven EV charging stations that took a $7.5 billion in taxpayer investment to produce.First, they take time to appreciate the fruits of Florida's school choice policies, as more and more parents choose charter schools, private schools, or homeschooling for their children. They point out that this will force public schools to up their game in order to compete, as many Florida public schools face the threat of closure.Next, they lament the collapse of the Gaza Pier. They also discuss how this policy always seemed doomed from the moment it was announced. Scot notes that there are still five Americans held hostage by Hamas, and they examine the failure of the Biden administration's foreign policy in the Middle East. Finally, they laugh right alongside Margaret Brennan at Transportation Sec. Pete Buttigieg's verbose yet milquetoast response to her question about the $7.5 billion spent on the production of EV charging stations, an effort which has produced a grand total of seven charging stations across the country. They observe that consumers are not rushing to buy EV's, and that the government, along with automobile producers, will have to reckon with that.

It's budget day! And at time of record, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt had just dropped what the ladies hope will be the last Tory budget. Imagine that... Jemma and Marina give some initial reactions to Hunt's speech which opened with lies, continued with lies, and then finished with lies - because if there's one thing Hunt is good at, it's consistency. The ladies then move from the goings-on in Westminster to those in Rochdale with a lookback at George Galloway coming first in the Rochdale by-election, and Richard Tice's Reform candidate coming fourth - in a two-horse race, no less. Then it's onto that Sunak speech outside number 10 on a Friday at 5:30pm, which for all his faults, Boris Johnson would never have done - most probably because it would have eaten into wine-time Fridays. This week's underrated section is a buffet of delicious clips and tweets, including THAT Grazia interview with Rishi Sunak and his wife as they tried to convey themselves as totally normal, and came across as anything but. The ladies finish with a clip of Sky's Sophy Ridge that felt heaven-sent for The Trawl, plus a smash hits pudding from Munya Chawawa. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the International Court of Justice's decision in South Africa's genocide case against Israel, Biden's cratering popularity, Trump's torpedoing of an immigration deal, Biden's environmental policy, Matt Gaetz's ethics investigation, Texas' secession, and Gov. Whitmer's Michigan policy, before parsing through South Africa and others' initial reactions to the ICJ's provisional decisions made against Israel. Digby then joins, diving right into the devolution of Donald Trump over Biden's presidency, tackling mainstream media's hesitancy to cover it, and Nikki Haley's successful undermining of Trump's status within the GOP, despite his continual cucking of every other GOP candidate. Next, Digby, Emma, and Sam assess Biden's irrational commitment to the ideology of Bibi Netanyahu, before wrapping up with the likely sacrifice of Mike Johnson, and the chaos brewing between the GOP and the federal government with Texas' refusal of direct SCOTUS orders. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through the specifics of the ICJ's provisional orders to Israel, whether Israel will even abide by them, and how the decision provides a chance to reframe the conversation around the genocide in the West, also touching on some fake reports that came out of Israel in the wake of 10/7. Next, they look down south as they watch Ken Paxton attempt to defend Texas' independent control over the border, with other GOP Governors toeing the line between supporting fascism and not violating the Constitution. Tim Pool gets mad that his guests keep threatening violence, and Peter Navarro gets sentenced, plus, your IMs! “I've communicated with some people inside of North Korea, and I heard from them that the recent famine is very similar to [the] 1990s famine. And, as we all know, almost 3 million people died of starvation during that time.”Hyun-Seung Lee, otherwise known as “Arthur” Lee, is a former member of the North Korean ruling party. He and his family were fiercely loyal to the communist regime. But being on the side of economic reform and having witnessed several brutal internal purges by Kim Jong Un—including that of Kim's uncle—the family made the decision to defect.“Many people, especially top people, and even [the] general public in Pyongyang City, don't know what's happening outside Pyongyang because of the isolation of the information. The regime structure controls the information distribution,” says Mr. Lee.We discuss North Korea's current food crisis, the regime's nuclear weapons program, the value of free information, and what can be done to bring about change.“North Korea's regime keeps saying that once we have nuclear weapons, we'll live [a] better life … and we will be a strong country in terms of economy and the military side. Now, they have enough nuclear weapons—and the people are still suffering from starvation,” he says.Despite the political and cultural divisions in the United States, Mr. Lee believes that it is one of the world's greatest nations in terms of its commitment to democracy and individual freedoms.“American people should respect this society, because many people in the world think that still, America is the best. The freedom they have cannot be compared to the other nations,” says Mr. Lee.

Hooray! 5k plays! I'm really excited to record the special. I know I said that I might be doing a collab, but the majority of the Spotify poll I published said "nope! fanfic time!" Maybe I'll do a collab in the future, but definitely not right now, so please don't flood my Gmail inbox with a thousand collab requests. Here is some background info about my fanfiction/ part of its sequel: -There are 3 main characters in the first book: Pineclaw (ThunderClan tomcat), Maplefur (another ThunderClan shecat), and Adderfang (yes, I know this is canon, but I wrote this before I read Bluestar's Prophecy- a ShadowClan tomcat) -I was a little too obsessed with the concept of forbidden relationships, so it's going to be mentioned at least ten times. I was also obsessed with running away from a Clan and starting a utopia, so that's going to pop up towards the end of the book. -The forbidden relationship is between Adderfang and Hawkheart (again, I came up with the name before I read Bluster's Prophecy and realized Hawkheart was a canon name

We need change. And someone special who can bring it. ----- Another mass shooting last weekend. By the time this airs, there will likely be another one or two. It's awful that these events no longer horrify us the way they should. I hardly read the story anymore. The details are all too familiar. A young male. An assault weapon. A troubled background. A history of affiliation with hate groups. Concerns by neighbors and employers of mental instability. And, boom. I've warned my children: at some point in your life, you'll experience a mass shooting. Know what to do, I've told them. Our politicians blame guns, blame parenting, blame hate groups, blame mental health, all trying to out shout each other. All hoping NOT to solve the problem, but, instead, all hoping to get reelected. Bluster. Pomp. Self-righteousness. Self-important. I've said it before: If it weren't for politics these people would be unemployable. Our world needs a prophet today. Someone who steps forward and offers a compelling alternative view of our reality that creates change. Traditional faiths tell us that in times of chaos, confusion and disharmony, a messenger arrives, shouting from the edges, from the craziness of our world, showing us we've lost our way. There's a better way, they say. We need that person now. Prophets have always been outsiders but never strangers. They're on the edges but are active in the customs and the traditions of the group they're trying to reform. They see a truth that has escaped those of us in the center who gain traction by attacking each other. The prophets call attention to something different, something more important, and often, something obvious – right in front of us – that we can't see. However, aside from a tight group of early adopters, profits are reviled. They threaten the status quo. And those who benefit from the status quo act quickly to silence them. Pastors and priests make careers out of teaching the Bible's lessons of the prophets. Rest assured though, if a prophet showed up and questioned the value and the teaching of churches and pointed to a new, inclusive path to eternity, those very same pastors and priests would attack. But how would a prophet's voice break through? Who could it come from? It won't be a politician. Campaigning saying we've lost our way makes that person unelectable. It won't be on social media. That person would be cancelled. It won't be in business. That person would be accused of only trying to make money. And it won't be through entertainers. THAT person would be cancelled. So who? And how? And from where? Our world needs a prophet today. Someone to refocus us. To remind us of what's important. No prophet ever said, “Hey. I'll do it. I'll be your prophet.” They took the job reluctantly, feeling inferior to the task, but compelled by change that needs to happen. Our world needs that prophet today. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep It Real.
Dylan and Brendan run through the Big Ten to discuss where each team in the league stands relative to the NCAA Tournament. What type of seeds can top-half teams expect? What do bottom-half teams have to do make the field? Who are we buying and selling?
