Skirts below the knee. No jewelry, accessories, or makeup. Stockings in bed and no relaxing your hair. Does this sound familiar? For those raised in the church like Alechi, Dani, and their guest - religious trauma healer Pamela Merritt, this conversation is for you. Tune in as Pamela discusses church hurt versus trauma, how the Black community embodies religion, and the often confusing emotions around sex and religion. And be sure to lean in for her advice for reimagining your faith and reconnecting to the divine outside the church. KEY POINTS: Why is church membership dramatically dropping? Is the rise in community violence correlated with the lack of connection to spirituality? Do we need the church to teach us accountability and structure? The positive benefits of the church What trauma looks like and how it's perpetuated from the pulpit How to nourish your relationship with the divine outside of the church QUOTABLES: “For black church kids, we embody the music. We embody the feel of church. We embody the culture. We embody the community that Black church gives us. So when people come to me for religious trauma, consultations, and they are transitioning, what I'm helping them with is understanding that their religious space does not determine the structure that they have to their life.” - Pamela Merritt “Once you understand who you are and what your needs are and what your beliefs are, you can reimagine your connection with the divine in a different way.” - Pamela Merritt GUEST RESOURCES: Pamela Merritt holysmokesmovement.com thefaithcommunity.org PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: For more info, visit their website: triggeredafpodcast.com Like what you're hearing? Hey y'all! Was a pastor featured on the BMM podcast on your Bingo card for 2023? It certainly wasn't on Mikey and Randie's, but seeing as this season's theme is “Lemonade” the Chapmans are committed to acknowledging the nourishment all around them. Enter Kristian A. Smith, a man who wears many hats, and is also the host of the Holy Smokes Spirituality and Cigars podcast. In this episode, the couple interview Kristian and discuss the first time they all broke an unspoken spoken rule, his ministry, how he and his wife, Pamela, are deconstructing marriage, how his relationship changed his faith and more. Kristian even shares a hack to how you can ensure the church you're visiting (if you still visit churches) believes in inclusive and humane theology.Later, Randie and Mikey chat with Kristian about how cigars bring people closer and after the interview the Chapmans shower each other in some PDA.This episode will surprise you in the best way, and your hosts hope you enjoy. As the future of Roe looks increasingly shaky, the implications of its overturning could result in a number of outcomes some of which may not immediately occur to many of us. Pamela Merritt, Executive Director of Medical Students for Choice, talks to us about what the likely overturning of Roe v. Wade may mean for criminalization, health outcomes, and abortion education and training for medical students and residents. As the fall of Roe looms, the criminalization of pregnancy outcomes, sexual and reproductive health, and self-managed abortion may become more commonplace. Already, criminalization has crept closer and closer; Texas's SB8 allows for anyone to sue for those who “aid and abet” in abortion access or care. In a country in which people of color are already hyper-surveilled, these outcomes will be disproportionately felt by Black communities and other communities of color. In an international context, Poland is currently seeking to create a registry of pregnant people using self-reported and investigated information. For so many, being able to decide whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term may be a life-or-death decision or can result in extreme health outcomes. For Black pregnant people in the U.S., maternal mortality rates are four times higher than the general population. Putting abortion out of reach means contributing to the persistent maternal health crisis. Abortion bans also impact fertility, access to in vitro fertilization, and the ability to treat fibroids, endometriosis, and polycystic issues. Miscarriage management and treatment of ectopic pregnancies may be up for debate among risk-averse hospital ethics boards. Roe's future will have an unknown impact on abortion training and education among medical students and residents. In states that are poised to ban or limit abortion, will residency programs teaching on abortion care and family planning may lose accreditation? Will accrediting programs change their standards of care based on the American Academy of Obstetricians and Gynecologist's best practices? Likely, in 5 to 20 years, patterns of geographic access to care may become clearer, where providers are legally safer practicing abortion in some areas of the country compared to others. So many of us are worried and angry about a woman's right to make choices regarding her own body possibly being taken away, maybe in less than a month (ugh), but let us take comfort in the fact that there are med students and practicing physicians lining up to make sure they're trained in abortion and reproductive healthcare for women many thanks to the international nonprofit, Medical Students for Choice. Today, Amanda and Jenna interview Executive Director Pamela Merritt about how these medical pros are literally on the frontlines of this battle, ready to protect our uteruses and our choices over what happens to them. Pamela gave us so many things to think about we hadn't before—like why med students are more likely to be pro-choice after going through med school because of what they learn about the dangers of pregnancy and how the majority of those who choose abortion are already parents. Come for the rants, stay for the education and then get your marching signs ready.
Hey hey Fam, welcome back! We are rolling into week 5 of our series on Release, Resilience & Re-invention. This week I've got another great episode and we are talking about the Power of Reinvention: How Pastor Kristian A. Smith is “Breaking All the Rules” and transforming the faith community. Hang with us until the end as Kristian shares how he created a faith community that is radically inclusive. You have probably never heard the term Spiritual Image Developer before. That makes sense because the term was created to encompass what Kristian is. It's not enough to just call him a clothier, or a pastor, or a stylist, or a theologian, or a podcaster, or a consultant, or a speaker, or a spiritual director, or a leader. While people have called on Kristian to serve in all of these roles, none of them defines what he does. As a Spiritual Image Developer Kristian helps his clients and congregants develop how they see themselves on the inside and how others see them externally. He understands that God looks at your heart and humans look at your outer appearance. His mission is to help you maximize both. Kristian has served in many areas of ministry including worship leader, conference planner and facilitator, teacher, youth minister, pastor & founder of The Faith Community and leader of the Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality Movement. He is also the lead style consultant with P-Squared Custom Clothiers where he develops the professional images of his male and female clients. Kristian is a fashion aficionado, a foodie and a cigar enthusiast who enjoys lifting weights (but hates cardio). He is married to his beautiful wife, Pamela Merritt. -- Connect with Kristian: www.kristianAsmith.com IG: @kristiansmith02 Twitter: @kristiansmith02 Facebook: facebook.com/kristian.smith.5249 LinkedIn: linkedin.com/m/in/kristian-smith-a1419179 -- P.S. - If you've got questions, I've got answers. NARAL's The Morning After is a production of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. This week, Gabe talked to one his first friends in the reproductive rights movement: Pamela Merritt. Along with Erin Matson, Pamela is a co-founder at ReproAction — a national organization working to increase access to abortion and advance reproductive justice. Pamela is based out of Missouri, which has just one remaining abortion clinic: Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region. The governor has been trying to close that clinic by refusing to renew their license. While Planned Parenthood's legal team is fighting to keep the clinic open, ReproAction is busy lifting up the voices of people in that state who desperately need abortion care. Pamela Merritt — better known as “Dear Pammy” through her cat advice blog — didn’t become a cat fan until she married one. At the time, she says, cats were really still second-class citizens in this country. There weren’t any no-kill shelters, and she and her first husband rescued many cats themselves. Pam learned how to be a “cat appreciator” from her first husband, and she came to realize that cats are our equals, and that our relationships with them work best if we don’t think in terms of a master-owner mindset. Pam did cat rescue for many years, and has now written a book, The Way of Cats, subtitled “How to use their instincts to train, understand, and love them.” The book is currently available only in Kindle format, but a paperback version is in the works, as is a video channel. In the meantime, Pam also continues her cat advice blog on her website, where she tackles such topics as keeping cats off the kitchen counters. Pam feels that most “training” of cats happens naturally when we appreciate and care for cats properly. “If we do the cat a favor in terms of care,” Pam says, “then the cat owes us a favor in terms of cooperation … and we can’t make this magic happen unless we learn how to speak and read ‘cat.’” To learn more about Pam and her cat advice, visit wayofcats.com or follow her under “Way of Cats” on the various social media channels. You can also find her book on Amazon.

Are the Democrats going soft on choice? Reproductive justice advocate and NARAL Missouri board member Pamela Merritt joins host Lindsay Beyerstein to discuss the rhetoric of Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Ben Ray Luján who decided to remind everyone that the DCCC has no “litmus test” on abortion. Merritt explains why it's impossible to achieve economic justice without addressing reproductive justice and that Democrats who try to tackle the former while ignoring the latter risk alienating their most loyal supporters, notably women of color. If they want to win a majority in the House of Representatives in 2018, the Democratic Party can't afford to throw the base under the bus one more time. As Merritt argues, they can go even further by actually listening to that base and elevating its concerns as part of a "fifty plus one" strategy for victory.
