Congrats on another week of surviving and fighting the patriarchy! Get your earholes ready because this week was a doozy. I think we all know by now, what happens in Texas does NOT stay in Texas. What BS are the womb hounds that run the Lone Star State pulling now? Their new kink is to blame doctors for people being denied abortion care. PLUS, the professors at University of Texas drank the kool-aid and are suing to be able to FLUNK students who get abortions. Apparently, 2+2=WHORE! Oh, and remember the Zurawski v. Texas case we've been following for over a year? Joining us to talk about what it all means and her tremendous commitment to fight for us all is lead plaintiff in the case, Amanda Zurawski. Check out a full list of their plaintiffs here. And obvi we're gonna drag the Senate for failing to protect birth control and laugh about the 20-foot IUD erected in DC! AND EVEN MORE GUESTS It's the Liberace of abortion! Musical Comedian, Sarah Hester Ross, is on spirit-lifting duty. The funny AF abortion stan originally from the Sunshine State yaps with us about her special Don't Mess With a Redhead, her fun little series “Florida Man Fridays,” and pushing boundaries talking about abortion, sexism, and queerness through her musical comedy. PLUS! Every year, we drag our abobo-loving booties over to Netroots Nation, AKA summer camp for progressives, to broadcast live and link up with our fav radical activists from all over. What goes down there? How does Netroots elevate issues, intersectionality, and what's so special about it this election year? Political Director of Netroots Nation, Mary Rickles, hops in to Buzzkill with us about it all. Times are heavy, but knowledge is power, y'all. We gotchu. CEO at The Impact Seat Foundation & National Board Chair for Netroots Nation, Cheryl Contee, discusses the venture capital's failure to reach black entrepreneurs as well as the state of the Progressive movement. Cheryl Contee is the CEO of the Impact Seat Foundation and the founder and chair of Do Big Things, both organizations working towards creating a world where women can succeed as business leaders and advancing new technologies for progressive causes. Contee has been an active participant in Netroots Nation, a progressive political convention, from its inception. She is also a board chair for the event and believes in its mission to unify various voices in the progressive movement, even when internal conflict exists. The Impact Seat Foundation focuses on investing in women-led tech startups and pushing capital toward people of color who are disproportionately underrepresented in business investments. Contee believes that there's a massive opportunity lost in GDP by not investing in businesses started by people of color. Contee also addresses issues of diversity and inclusion in her ventures, insisting that diversity is a strength, not a concession. She advocates for panels at Netroots Nation and elsewhere to be diverse in terms of race, gender, and perspective to enrich the conversation. She is the author of the Amazon best-selling book "Mechanical Bull," which is a guide for achieving startup success. The book not only reflects her personal story but also includes practical information for aspiring entrepreneurs, including quotes from other successful innovators. Cheryl Contee is making a substantial impact in both the progressive and business spheres by bridging the gap between social justice and entrepreneurship. Her focus on empowering women and people of color in the venture capital space aligns with the broader goals of the progressive movement, which seeks to correct systemic imbalances and champion diversity and inclusion. The work of leaders like Contee is critical in reshaping the landscape of venture capital, which has been historically dominated by white, male entrepreneurs. By directing capital towards underrepresented groups, Contee is not only fulfilling the ethical mandate of social justice but also helping to realize untapped economic potential. The Brookings Institution has reported on the racial gaps in venture capital, highlighting that Black entrepreneurs receive a disproportionately small amount of venture funding. Cheryl's role as a board chair in Netroots Nation also serves as a crucial platform to instigate meaningful dialogue and action within the progressive movement. Netroots has been effective in providing a space for constructive dialogue among a very diverse set of voices, from activists to influencers. This is in line with the broader progressive goal to create a more inclusive, equitable society, as underlined by institutions such as the Center for American Progress. In summary, the work of Cheryl Contee in venture capital and the progressive movement exemplifies a forward-thinking approach that aims to rectify systemic imbalances while also creating economic opportunities. It's a synergistic relationship that has the potential to transform both the business world and social justice landscapes in the United States. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/politicsdoneright/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/politicsdoneright/support

Chuck Pennachio visits with PDR at Netroots Nation 2022 to discuss healthcare reform on a state-by-state basis and his group OnePayerStates. It was a pleasure meeting up with Chuck Pennachio, the Co-founder/President of the One Payer States network and associate professor of history and politics at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. We had a lot to talk about. "One Payer States is an organization that has been around since 2009," Pennacchio said, "We formalized our group as a C4 organization, as a political organization four and a half years ago. And we're geared up to winning Universal Healthcare at the state level. We'd like to get it adopted in one, two, three, or four states, model it as a successful program, and then go national with it similar to the way Canada got to it one province at a time. It started in Saskatchewan. All the other provinces looked at it jealously and said we want to do that too, healthcare for everybody. cheaper and better. At Netroots Nation conference on Saturday Congresswoman Pressley told minorities thinking of higher office "If you’re not prepared to come to that table and represent that voice, don’t come, because we don't need any more brown faces that don't want to be a brown voice." What exactly is a brown voice?

President Trump tweeted this weekend that "'Progressive Democratic Congresswomen" should "go back" to their countries — even though three of the four lawmakers were born in the U.S. and all are American citizens. House Democrats, are calling the comments racist and xenophobic. Do you agree?
PATREON EXCLUSIVE - https://www.patreon.com/posts/110-netroots-28326205 In the mid-2000s, a hot new thing called the "blogosphere" shook the very foundations of American politics, creating a progressive media ecosystem that helped launch the presidential candidacy of... er, Howard Dean. The 2006 documentary BLOG WARS chronicles this moment, with a particular emphasis on Daily Kos founder and Nancy Pelosi superfan Markos Moulitsas. We discuss the ideological project (or lack thereof) of the mid-2000s liberal blogosphere, and track the evolution of the online left. PLUS: Pete Buttigieg's "National Service Program," the changing media landscape, Adam Sandler, and a report for Burlington, Vermont.
Rashida Tlaib, a Palestinian American from Detroit, will become the first Muslim Woman to ever be elected to Congress, and she’s also a Democratic Socialist. But...Is Socialism Dead? That’s what pundits are proclaiming because a number of Ocasio-Cortez backed candidates lost their primaries this week. New York Times Magazine releases “Losing Earth,” by Nathaniel Rich - a devastating look at the chance to stop climate change between 1979 and 1989. Naomi Klein corrects Rich’s retreat to “human nature” in his conclusion. Meanwhile, California battles the largest fire in the state’s history as 17 additional fires still burn. Want a look at our dystopian climate future? Just take a look at California’s use of prison labor to help fight these fires. Inmates are being paid as little as $1 to $2 a day. In today’s “you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me” file, President of AFL-CIO Richard Trumpka offers qualified support for Trump’s trade policies and would not rule out supporting Trump in 2020 when asked. Trump goes off the rails in Wilkes-Barre. We get mainstream media introductions to QAnon and the Washington Post profiles white supremacist sanctuary city in Ulysses, PA. Some of the biggest winners of the Trump Tax Break are...surprise, surprise...Corporate CEOs. In today’s PA focus, the Koch Brothers’ Americans for Prosperity gets ready to dump cash in the state to back Scott Wagner. Scott Wagner flip-flops on climate change, sort of. Tom Wolf says that Pennsylvania is “not ready” for recreational marijuana even though two-thirds of Pennsylvanians want it. Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s 18-month-long investigation detailing sexual abuse allegations against more than 300 Catholic priests is due out any day now. Are there still behind-the-scenes legal efforts to delay the report’s release? In today’s last call, Kevin gets a dog. Sean makes cocktails. Next Free Range is coming. And, Raging Chicken is going to Netroots Nation 2019 in Philly!
This week on the big show, Fingers and Tracy discuss the alleged assassination attempt of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Cynthia Nixon's imploring the Democrats to embrace Socialism at Netroots, Mika Brzezinski thinks Trump is unhinged, and finally they reveal that they've discovered the source of most of the pollution in our oceans!
This week Off-Kilter took a trip to New Orleans for Netroots Nation, which for more than a decade has been bringing together progressive leaders, candidates, grassroots activists and independent media once a year. For the first of two episodes featuring conversations from Netroots, this week Rebecca talks with Joe Dinkin, national campaign director for the Working Families Party, one of the lead sponsors of this year’s conference and a longtime Netroots goer; Danica Roem, the first openly trans elected official in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and Chad Bolt, associate director of policy at Indivisible (and a friend of the show) who’s been talking tax at Netroots—including this week’s news that the Trump administration is trying to bypass Congress to give millionaires and billionaires another $100 billion in tax cuts they don’t need.

Each of Donald Trump's cabinet nominees seems uniquely positioned to destroy the very governmental agency they will be administering. Rick Perry, the latest nominee, famously forgot that the department even existed. In the meantime, while most observers note that the revelation that Russia hacked the election in order to give it to Trump, the President-Elect continues to pooh pooh the report -- while continuing to skip his daily Presidential Briefings. The one glimmer of hope: the growing list of electors who have asked for the intel before they vote next week... and rumors that the number of Republican "faithless electors" who are interested in voting for an alternate candidate is as high as 20. Trump's team must be worried about that - they have threatened anyone who changes their vote with political consequences. MOMocrats Karoli and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss with guest Melissa Ryan of Ctrl Alt-Right Delete Newsletter. Ryan is a veteran of both politics and technology since the early days of the Netroots and has worked with campaigns from local to Presidential.
Netroots Nation Conference is convening next week, the Republican Convention will be in Cleveland the following week and the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia the week after that.Joining us to make sense of this unpredictable election year is Villanova University Professor Matthew R. Ted Cruz takes ICE to task and calls out Mitch McConnell on the Senate floor. The Iran nuke deal is still making headlines. A shooting in Louisiana is being used to renew calls from the left for gun control and to draw attention away from the shooting in Chattanooga. Planned Parenthood gets busted for breaking the law while trying to make a profit from body parts of aborted fetuses. Then we'll talk about Martin O'Malley's face-off with “Black Lives Matter” protesters at the Netroots conference, which just didn't work out very well for the former Maryland govenor.

Tonight on Eyes Wide Open we are talking about the historic deal with Iran over nuclear capability and the whacky, alternate reality response from the GOP and the war hawks. They are coming up with some creative talking points to convince people to reject the Iran Nuclear agreement and the real motivation for this is pretty obvious, especially when so many of them are campaigning against one another for the GOP nomination for president in 2016. "Walker And Bush Clash Over When To Go After Iran -- Day One Or Two" http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/scott-walker-iran-deal_55acfd69e4b0d2ded39f57c2 Sandra Bland story has become the foundation for the "Black Lives Matter" protest against Democratic presidential hopeful Martin O'Malley at Netroots Nation last weekend. They also protested Bernie Sanders' Netroots session. As the former Mayor of Baltimore, a city with a long history of strong arm police tactics against the Black community, O'Malley was a logical target for the group, but the Governor of Maryland was prime protest target. The protesters also hit Sanders for speaking about class-oriented economic inequality, but not specifically enough about black inequality. http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/18/politics/martin-omalley-all-lives-matter/ Rheana Nevitt Piegols and Michael Handley discuss these issues with Dr. Shirley McKellar tonight on Eyes Wide Open. Since you can get all the Donald Trump "news" you can digest from anywhere else, we'll ignore the asswipe here. There's plenty of other things about which to get angry. For instance, Wes Clark suggests putting Muslims in internment camps! Cenk Uygur agrees with my assessment of the BLM protest at Netroots. Plus, @GottaLaff is back. How have politically engaged organizations used the web to fundamentally change how people organize and engage politically? Why are left wing organizations more likely to succeed in organization online? Why are conservatives less funny than liberals? David Karpf chronicles the dozens of Netroots political organizations, both progressive and conservative, that have sprouted up with the mass adoption of the internet in his new book The MoveOn Effect: The Unexpected Transformation of American Political Advocacy. On this 2012 election-themed episode of Radio Berkman he speaks with our host David Weinberger about how these organizations are having an impact on politics.
