“On the way to the library, I flew a kite.” We here on Outlook decide to begin this particular Mixed Bag episode with the above quote, start to a social media status, because we on this show love libraries/love books and love the outlook of writer Leona Godin, also close friend of this radio show/podcast, but really because elections make us want to take a break to fly a kite too. As the federal elections here in Canada approach, we're together, just after Easter, to discuss some of the issues in our country's politics from a disability perspective as issues facing disabled Canadians have been mostly overlooked during this election season, so soon off of the rushed Ontario provincial elections we just so recently dealt with. We're telling about the realities of the PC Party being no-show's at both provincial and now federal disability town halls and a still-totally inaccessible, inadequate, and inequitable voting system/process. Kerry shares about experiencing a new holiday, Irish style, after being in Ireland for Halloween and now Easter, along with being in Ireland last time during the presidential elections in the States and now, being back this time during our Canadian ones. Also, she and Barry celebrated Easter by having KFC fried chicken for their Easter meal, coming to the conclusion that KFC in Ireland seems better to her than eating it in Canada. Parades, Irish Sea gulls, and Kerry cuddling with an Oyster guide dog as we talk traditions, whether holidays or looking for change (but not necessarily only for change's sake) when voting for politicians who often ignore the concerns of disabled voters. Kerry also shares about a plane ride conversation with a generation z stranger, about the multi-sensory experience of taking guide dog Oyster to her favourite park again, and Brian's revisiting previous voting attempts and their inaccessibility as he's off to try again himself. So, it's Canada's federal election on April 28th and we're doing a mixed bag edition, one co-host in studio live and the other in Northern Ireland. With a bit of distance from the anxious Canadian citizenry, sister/co-host Kerry hasn't flown a kite, but instead has flown like one into the future of the UK time zone five hours ahead of brother/co-host Brian and yet modern technology makes it possible to open up a bit of a pre-election mixed bag of discussion topics, both silly and serious as one voted already while the other is on his way after this show and we will continue with a post-election wrap-up shortly.

This week on Open Sources Guelph, we go mega! On this super-sized edition of the show, the last one before Election Day and the episode that opens three days of advanced polling, we will profile the three candidates we haven't covered yet. From the long-time campaigner running for the governing party, to an upstart trying to rebuild a Liberal stronghold, and a new face for a new party! This Thursday, February 20, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Be Coole. You may not know Robert Coole, but he's been doing politics in Guelph for a long-time as a reliable and seasoned campaigner for local Conservatives, but now, he's in the spotlight as the PC Party candidate in this provincial election. Coole will join us to talk about why Guelph needs a voice in the next PC government, and why he's taking the spotlight after years of playing in politics behind the scenes. Mustafa: The Liberal Candidate. There are a lot of young people running for the Ontario Liberals, and Mustafa Zuberi is one of them. Pretty well established in local politics thanks to his years running the Young Liberals at the University of Guelph, Zuberi now aims to be the next MPP from this riding and part of a Bonnie Crombie government. He will tell us why the Liberals are ready to run Ontario again. If the Blue Fits... Just when it looked like there would be no emerging party candidates running in Guelph this election, we get the arrival of Carina Fraser. The author and single mother is running for New Blue, which, as the name implies, is an alternative to the PCs aiming to collect the ones turned off by Doug Ford and not willing to bank on one of the other major parties. Fraser will tells us why you shouldn't sleep on the New Blue. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

In some respects, Wellington-Halton Hills is the riding to watch this year because, for the first time in three decades. it's competitive. Ted Arnott announced that he would not be seeking re-election at the end of the last term, and while the PC Party would like to hold on to this one, opportunity is knocking for the other major parties. Today, Ontario's official opposition will make their case for the riding next door! Of the four major party candidates in Wellington-Halton Hills, only one of them is not presently a politician with a municipal council. Between those four, there's also an even split between candidates representing the urban side of the riding, and the more rural parts. Simone Kent is the from the rural side, and she's the one major party candidate who's not presently in a political office, but that's not to say that she doesn't keep busy. Kent has a unique resume being both a dairy farmer and an education worker. She's stayed active in organizations like Centre Wellington's environmental committee and Jersey Ontario, a non-profit association for Jersey cow owners and breeders. Farming, education, the environment, grassroots organizing: that's about as good as it gets for a resume for an NDP candidate, but what does Kent think of the issues, and what does she want to do as the first MPP in nearly 35 years whose not Ted Arnott? We will get an answer to that and other questions on this week's edition of the podcast as Kent talks about why she's running and being the only major party candidate not already in politics. She will also talk about what an NDP-led Ontario government will do for Ontarians, and what kind of premier Marit Stiles would be. Also, she will discuss, whether Doug Ford has been ignoring Ontario's farmers, and the issues she wants to put front and centre in these last two weeks of this very truncated campaign. So let's dig into the NDP case on this edition of the Wellington-Halton Hills Politicast! You can learn more about the Ontario NDP, their candidates, and their platform at the party's website. We will be cranking out another episode of the Wellington-Halton Hills Politicast this weekend, and, as you're waiting, keep in mind that advanced voting is on February 20 through 22 and you can find out where to go at elections.on.ca. Part 1 - You'll hear an introduction for our new listeners about TGCTS and our role in the public affairs landscape. We specialize in long-form interviews with elected officials, candidates, and newsmakers, holding government and institutions to account and providing a voice for the public. 6.00 Part 2 - A longtime director of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba, Wally Daudrich is a Churchill hotelier and eco-tourism operator (Lazy Bear Expeditions) and recently became a part-owner of the Winnipeg Sun. He decided to step up and run to become the new PC leader. "A lot of what I've been doing is building up trust with the legacy members," many of whom were put-off by the last leadership race process and 2023 election campaign. "I'm trying to bring those people back into the fold" and "fix the brand," Daudrich explains. His vision includes northern, mining and infrastructure development, citing the royalty revenues Saskatchewan derives as evidence mining could boost the provincial treasury by $3B. Daudrich discusses aspects the PC Party needs to shore up- improving communicating with members is at the forefront. He cites Pallister's pandemic management as a source of internal tensions and dissatisfaction, and says in comparison to places like South Dakota, "The government was being influenced by the wrong people." * To send feedback, topic or interview suggestions, or E-transfers to support our work - martygoldlive@gmail.com 19.00 - Daudrich believes that during the pandemic, Pallister was distracted by a constantly-critical media "that influenced the policy that we sought." He is also critical that caucus members "got pulled into that vortex" and didn't support maintaining "the semblance of freedom that we have." Daudrich and his wife worked hard to build a multi-million dollar business while raising 5 kids. He's opposed to policies creating a dependence on government funding and "a culture of victimhood." He wants citizens "to excel in your life" and create businesses, and wants to wean Manitoba off of federal transfer payments: "Why are we the only western province that has to have our hand out?" 29.20 Part 3 - Marty Gold asks Daudrich about his personal and business background, having a residence in the Morden-Winkler area, and policy matters. - On crime and public safety he says there's "a mood introduced under Justin Trudeau that we need to coddle these criminals" and for cops becoming social workers. - "We used to laugh at Saskatchewan" but now their mining policies underpin a strong economy. - Daudrich believes the proposed NeeStaNan Utility Corridor to build a rail line to Port Nelson could bring up to $100B in investments and jobs to the province. - "We've got hundreds of miles of coastline that gives us access to the North Atlantic and some of the biggest markets in the world for energy, for potash and agriculture products and we're doing nothing on that front." 47.00 - Daudrich is firmly against the "I'm an anti-Zionist not an anti-Semite" radicals terrorizing public spaces and dividing western societies. "I am an absolute supporter of the state of Israel and the Jewish people without any apology." He says the public has to closely assess whether politicians like Premier Wab Kinew actually take action against Jew-hate or just engage in "Symbolism over substance." * More about the Daudrich campaign is at Wally4Leader.ca * 57.25 Part 4 - Our Donate page on ActionLine.ca has handy lists of our Top Podcasts of 2024; interviews with political leaders, public figures and crime victims; and our reports on City Hall and the Legislature. The Progressive Conservatives are trying to unsnarl two members from a letter of support for a suspended U of Manitoba nursing student, after MLAs Richard Perchotte (Selkirk) and Obby Khan (Fort Whyte) seemingly didn't realize the "anti-Israel" activist posted a Nazi cartoon and antisemitic content to describe the Israeli military and government. And while PC leader Heather Stefanson claimed "both individuals have since apologized", according to sources Obby Khan was taking his time and was waiting until Thursday to find the words. Part 1- We provide the background of the president of the U of M Nursing Students' Association, Arij Al Khafagi, and review a Free Press interview where she played the victim. She went full Pallywood in describing herself as a "humanitarian by heart" who "shares the perspective of unity and humanity"- as long as it paints Israel as oppressor and the genocidal Gazan society as oppressed. She even bragged she had Jewish friends on the far-left, after senior administrators held her accountable for posting cartoons that, as Marty Gold explains, breached the IHRA definition of antisemitism. Citing "discriminatory remarks and demonstrating wider unprofessional conduct" as well as her Instagram antics, College of Nursing officials iced her student status and she became a cause celebre among the local Pro-Palestine mob. As part of a campaign to salvage her academic year, MLAs were solicited to send a letter asking Advanced Education Minister Renee Cable to intercede and get the Jew-hater back into classes. Opposition critic Perchotte, along with Khan, signed a letter to the Minister that complained "it sends an unacceptable message to academically penalize a student for expressing herself... the same passionate nurses that our healthcare system so desperately needs." 17:30 Part 2- You'll hear the apology sent by Richard Perchotte to a Jewish family where he admitted, "I failed to get the details before signing", and insisting "the antisemitism posts are against the belief of my party, my leader and myself". Five hours later, Stefanson followed up, assuring the family that "As soon as it was brought to my attention, I made clear that this does not reflect the sentiment of our PC Party." The former Premier continued "Both individuals have since apologized." But no one seemed to have heard a word of contrition from Khan on Wednesday. "Where's Obby"? asked one listener. Party insiders told TGCTS if Khan's waiting until Friday to do it, that's another in a long line of questionable decisions the Tory star has made that undermine his credibility with the rank and file, after he was a major focal point of the losing election campaign. As we report, while Khan tries to play politician with local "pro-Palestinian" figures, at least one he's been photgraphed with is believed to have been seen in a video threatening Winnipeg Jews where calls are heard celebrating Hitler and Hamas. That video is still being investigated by Winnipeg Police. Pro-Hamas marches continue to attack Canadian values and villify Israel's right to self defence. The pro-Intifada sentiment was loudly proclaimed when the rail line was blocked on November 20. There's a morally deceptive 'progressive' movement funded by Iran and other anti-West agitators who want to turn our society against the concept of "Never Again". We've been seeing political cowardice, not leadership, in Winnipeg. Will the media ask Obby Khan to repudiate the "anti-Zionist not antisemite" radicals in our community, and denounce the weekly marches of terror-supporting "decolonizers"? Or will he continue to 'go along to get along' with antisemites? ******* The costs of our independent investigations and analysis is funded entirely by YOU- our sponsors, advertisers and donors. Well... trying to conceal that an underage teen drove the getaway car from a liquor mart robbery and rammed a cop car to evade arrest before being shot; pretending the drop in the poll numbers for Wab Kinew's NDP wasn't happening; etc. etc. When we saw the trend line for Manitoba election polling, our listeners heard about it. ALONE in the media landscape we said this was a horserace, even if the public doesn't really want to bet on either horse. Hear how last week's Free Press/Probe poll has led to a complete obliteration of the Free Press narrative that Premier Heather Stefanson "has been unable to move the needle in public opinion polls". As Marty Gold explains, dismissing how "the lucky pundits predicted" a dead heat shows how out of touch corporate newsrooms are from voter reality. To the chagrin of the newsroom experts, while tax cuts may not have been a "Top Ten" issue in voter priority polls, when 4 figure rebate cheques landed in mailboxes, it still had the desired effect of helping the cash flow of Manitobans battling inflation and pump a few more voters into the PC Party column. ** Support our work that supports your values and your community via paypal.com/paypalme/MartyGoldMedia ** 14:58 Part 2 - Our crime courts and public safety analysis continues to get compliments - and important tips about danger lurking in St. Boniface around prominent area parks. - Whether it's a group of homeless criminals running an open-air chop shop or a single suspicious creep scoping out who to victimize next, that community faces increased risks. As open drug use on residential street corners diminishes the confidence of homeowners in their safety, another emerging issue in St. B is whether violent crime in the area south of Marion Street, is being fueled by the wards of numerous group homes. - Public revulsion towards pathologically violent teenagers was reached after the death of the 17 year old boy last week in defending his mother and sisters from a swarming mob. - With a 14 year old boy charged with murder and a 15 year old girl charged with ADW - and about 8 other suspects still at large - the mood in Winnipeg is not on 'root causes'. In the wake of the savage attack on Graham Ave. a block from the front door of the downtown police station, Mayor Gillingham touted he had help on the way. Hear the common-sense comments from concerned citizens about the murder and about "the bleeding hearts" who refuse to acknowledge that "at 14 and 15 you're old enough to know right from wrong and what stabbing someone can do." - Capping off the crime round-up is yet another Level 5 offender - our longtime term for stolen car drivers who aim at cops. A woman who's been in the news before ping pong around downtown. Ever wonder how much the damage to public service vehicles - it isn't just cop cars - and lost injury time is costing us? COMING SOON: It's Assiniboine Avenue in 2010 all over again. The City has put the screws to ordinary residents and business owners from Arlington to Archibald- and as we've learned, to health care employees and patients and visitors. No one else has reported the extensive tension being caused yet again, by the City of Winnipeg engaging in deceptive, slanted "public consultations" for bike lanes. Our next follow-up will reveal there's a 3rd local business zone battling biased "bike lane processes." We don't just talk about something, we DO something about it. By shining a light on the hidden facts and details, YOU have the power to fight back. Your support helps fund this platform, so the community can be informed and become active. Help prime the pump with a donation or sponsorship, as we head into delivering unique election reporting and interviews- including in July, a Manitoba Cabinet Minister.

The only televised debate of the 2023 Alberta Election goes down tonight. What can we expect from Danielle Smith and Rachel Notley? Who has the upper hand? Does it even matter? Furthermore, does anybody even recognize the United Conservative Party anymore?  2:00 | Our Group Chat Round Table reconvenes with Katherine O'Neill, Harman Kandola, and Jenny Adams, veterans of multiple conservative campaigns. We open with observations on what sets this debate apart from any other in Alberta history. Then, our panelists discuss the abhorrent comments from UCP candidate Jennifer Johnson about gender minority students, and what an appropriate response from Danielle Smith looks like. We look back at the PC/WRP merger (Katherine was PC Party president at the time), and how that set the table for today's version of the UCP. Our panel discusses Rob Anderson (Smith's top advisor) defending a far-right commentator, NDP candidate Kevin Van Tighem's comments about the oil and gas industry, and polling discrepancies out of Calgary.  All in all, this is an hour of Alberta election coverage you won't want to miss!  Let us know what you think: talk@ryanjespersen.com  WEBSITE: https://ryanjespersen.com/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/RealTalkRJ INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/RealTalkRJ/ TIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@realtalkrj PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/ryanjespersen THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR SPONSORS! https://ryanjespersen.com/sponsors The views and opinions expressed in this show are those of the host and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Relay Communications Group Inc. or any affiliates.

With the passing of Bill 23 by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, it is becoming even more clear to voters that developers run the Province. Their sphere of influence goes beyond the carving up of the Greenbelt. This episode uses Ontario examples to show how detrimental the relationship between ultra wealthy developers and politicians is to the wellbeing of our communities. It isn't just campaign donations, developers are wining and dining politicians, founding and funding right-wing third party 'advertisers' and clearly writing policies that cater to their every need. Resources linked to the show:Who Control's Toronto - ACORD Report - “In the 2018 Toronto Municipal Election, 34% of all campaign contributions came from people with ties to the development industry” Doesn't think any other industry is as heavily invested in municipal politics Toronto 9 out of 9 Planning and Housing Committee took funds (25%) Pasternack 59% of the funds raised Follow the Money Report - Horizon Ottawa - Nearly half of donations came from folks tied to developers Chair of planning Committee had 96% raised this way Results in bylaws and other things under the control of the local governments to be created/changed to suit developer needs - and contrary to public good. Already normalized rezoning and bylaw amendments. Now they don't even need to do that - leaving local officials unable to push back on critical items (affordable housing, green initiatives) Bill 68 (banned union/corporate donations) BUT: raised individual limits and allowed for 3rd Party Contributions (see ONTARIO PROUD) Ontario Proud's Election Advertising Was Mostly Funded By Developers - Sold as some grassroots campaign to defend Ontario values - really just a few very wealthy donors (87%) “Mattamy Homes, at $100,000; anti-union contractors association Merit Ontario, at $50,000; Nashville Developments, also at $50,000; Opportunities Asia Ltd. at $30,000; and Shiplake Properties Limited at $25,000. Seventeen other companies, mostly related to housing development, donated $10,000 apiece.” Ontario Proud: Takes credit for Doug Ford's win. Boasting that unions spent so much more and got a lesser result. Had ads, lawn signs “Unplug Wynne”. They only need to declare what they raised and spent during a specific time period. Outside that time they can do anything (and do). INVESTIGATION: Developers with ties to Ford government stand to cash in on Hwy. 413 | Canada's National Observer - -Lots of very powerful developers set to profit big time from Highway 413 (which has fierce opposition from environmental critics “Four of the developers are connected to Doug Ford's Progressive Conservative government through party officials and former Tory politicians now acting as registered lobbyists.” Article details these relationships and highlights the key players. All donors of Ontario Proud as well. Project will cost upwards of $10B to save folks (MTO says) 30 minutes of travel. Just so happens one of these developers takes Ford and Lecce to a Florida Panthers game, in a box (but swear no government business was discussed) Provide a map where it shows how PC top donors dot the land associated with the highway. I don't think this points to collusion between the PC Party and developers but of one between capital and anyone in power. Architects respond to Ontario's proposed Bill 23 - Ford says “ proposed legislation is to accelerate the construction of 1.5 million homes over the...
