Dan traveled up to Newtown, PA to sit with Dirty Dollhouse front-woman Chelsea Mitchell in her shop, Newtown Book & Record Exchange, along with her bassist Josh Machiz. Chelsea talks about growing up in Newtown, being an anxious, book-obsessed kid, and how she found her way into music by playing in the church worship bands and choir (where, as a bonus, she received classical voice training). She also talks about the trajectory of Dirty Dollhouse, beginning as a trio of her, Amber Twait and Vanessa Winters singing country harmonies, and how it morphed into the full band that it is today with members like Josh, Eric Lawry and Pete Hall. Dan, Chelsea, and Josh reminisce about an era in the Philly folk and rock scene that they all inhabited around the same time, and give their kudos to people who have helped along the way. Dirty Dollhouse's new LP, 'The End', is out now and available wherever you get digital music. The band will play a release show at Johnny Brenda's on November 22nd with Dominy and Bren. Also: Dan is getting ready to send the $$ from 'Want To Play A Song?: Live On 25 O'Clock Vol. 1' to Philly Music Fest (they're getting ready to announce their donation numbers very soon), so get yourself the comp exclusively on Bandcamp if you haven't already. All proceeds go to the charitable giving of PMF to music education charites in Philadlephia.

Mental health has been a challenge for educators for years and the pandemic only increased the needs of students and educators. Scared and unhappy kids can't learn. In this episode we talk to a middle school administrator who has been bringing greater awareness, sharper focus, and useful practices to students and educators in her school and district.Courtney Rau Rogers is a middle school Assistant Principal in suburban Boston. For the last 7-8 years she has been studying trauma-informed instruction, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and looking to find ways to increase students' social-emotional skills and coping mechanisms. Her school uses their advisory program to deliver instruction and create small groups to make connections. This helps build resiliency and coping skills. This focused and intentional part of the school schedule works by providing simple tools that target the skill areas students are lacking, such as self-regulation, persistence, and confidence. The advisory program uses daily themes with sample activities that teachers can use or adapt for their own groups. The school uses Sown to Grow as a tool to help keep fingers on the pulse of the population overall as well as on individuals who may need support.ResourcesFostering Resilient Learners: Kristen Souers and Pete Hall, Relationship, Responsibility, & Regulation and Fostering Reslient Learners. What are the differences between the skills needed for educational leadership compared to the type of leadership skills need in other fields What are the differences between developing leadership skills in kids versus building leadership abilities for adults? I see a lot of behaviors in schools that are contributed to the trauma or environment that students are experiencing. I work sometimes one-on-one with this students who are going through a lot at home. I have seen a range of behaviors from throwing chairs, running off campus, screaming, making silly noises, kicking, pulling hair, or spitting on you, withdraw or shut down, you name it. All students whether they are on the autism spectrum or just have a lot of trauma or just having a rough day, they all have needs just like we do as an adult. It can be really hard to accompany these students when each one may need something different. I don't see students as a bad person or think that they are trying to get attention, I get curious and I truly care about what they are needing. I am there to support them in any way that I can. If we bring our judgements to the table then it makes it really hard to be present with our students. I remember that they need so much compassion, grace, kindness, love and a listening ear because some may not get that at home. NVC has helped me so much with meeting these students where they are at and having the language to create a safe dialogue with them when they are escalated or when they have calmed down. Most often then not, I am empathically listening and giving them a reflection on what they said so they know I understand them and believe their experience. Believing ones experience doesn't mean I agree, it means I am believing their experience as their truth. Once I can do this, we can work towards problem solving together or resolving a conflict using feelings and needs and do-able requests. Adinah and I get to talk about what is going on with student behavior and how we can use a different lens to understand in a deeper way what is going on for these students. Trauma can have a huge impact on students. Trauma can impact the classroom and teachers. I have witnessed how trauma affects learning and growth in the classroom and I hope that I can make a small change in the way I communicate to hold space for these students. Longtime educator, author, speaker and leadership coach Pete Hall stresses the importance of a "reflective practice" for educators. He outlines a four-step process of self-reflection and shows how, when combined with some authentic self-care, it can build capacity in educators at every level. Check out all his works HERE and look for his latest book, "Always Strive to Be a Better You: How Ordinary People Can Live Extraordinary Lives" later this summer (2022).
Returning guest Pete Hall, executive director of educationhall.com and author of YA novel Chasing the Show, joins hosts Dr. Caesar Mickens and Ron Stefanski to talk about his new book and the valuable lessons of communication and empathy between parents, coaches, and kids. While Hall's other books focus on lessons of self-reflection, this story takes on a new approach: “How do I navigate what my life is going to be?,” said Hall. To create an audience receptive to learning while also engaged in the story, Hall focused on figuring out what people wanted most, “Part of the motivation beyond writing it was to build connections,” he said.Schools today are trying to figure out the metric for success and part of that equation needs to be building connections. The human need for interaction was reflected sharply in the pandemic-era remoteness and isolating digital aspect, taking a toll on many people's mental health. When Hall's friend returned to the office, one of the reasons he stated was, “‘I miss interacting with human beings,'” said Hall. The book is reflective of those human connections, “It's a young adult novel…It follows the rises and falls of that dream [of an athlete],” explained Hall, “As the story unfolds, it also follows the interactions between the kid and his parents, the kid and his classmates and teammates, the kid and one of his teachers in particular, the parents and their friends who are school psychologists.” The book is aimed at explaining the importance of providing and nurturing support for his goals while also communicating effectively and developing a “Plan B” in case Plan A does not pan out.Not only does Chasing the Show help facilitate conversations between parents and kids, but it's an important tool for learning how to communicate effectively. A lot of kids “don't have the skills and knowledge to go and talk to their coach…” said Hall, this book aims to disrupt that.

This week, we take you to Auckland. A few months back, our own Betsy Corcoran traveled to New Zealand, where she sat down with Pete Hall. Right now, Pete is the newest principal of the Taupaki School, but he also has a background in entrepreneurship and teaching. Back during this interview, he served as the Educator Engagement Lead for Network for Learning (N4L), and principal at Upper Harbour Primary School. Betsy spoke with Pete about New Zealand’s schools, and discovered a few unique facts--including the reality that standards aren’t the be-all, end-all of schooling in New Zealand. In fact, the schools place a huge emphasis on bringing the community into the running of programs like makerspaces, and offer students a sense of autonomy that you don’t always see in standards-obsessed systems. What can the U.S. borrow from New Zealand's schooling system?
