This is the Band Shirt Day Podcast. In this episode, Dylan Gette King and Jason P. Woodbury share band shirt stories from Oliver Ackermann of A Place to Bury Strangers who describes the torn and frayed charm of his favorite Minor Threat shirt, pilfered from his older brother. And then Jess Abbott of Tancred takes us on a guided tour of some of her favorite band shirts, including a killer Taco Bell/Limp Bizkit bootleg, a Shania Twain tee, and her favorite shirt from her wife, Jenny Owen Youngs. On one hand, a band shirt is a simple everyday item, the kind of thing you might take for granted. But when you start thinking about it, the topic encompasses so much more: band shirts help us tell stories about ourselves and what music means to us. And that's why we're here: to think a little more about band shirts and the holiday invented to celebrate them, Band Shirt Day, a global fundraising initiative uniting artists, fans, and the music industry at large on Friday, September 20th.Artists like Portugal. The Man, Wilco, The Revivalists, The Format, K.Flay, Cherry Glazerr, Geese, and Warren G, along with many more confirmed to participate through the Band Shirt Day. Wanna sign up as an artist for fan? Register now.Since launching, Band Shirt Day has raised more than 30k for charities, much of that from the Band Shirt Day Fund in partnership with GoFundMe, raising cash for organizations like Planned Parenthood, ACLU, Project Hope, The Ally Coalition, MusicCares, and Animal Legal Defense Fund. This is the Band Shirt Day Podcast, featuring Dylan-Gette King, the communications manager for MerchFriends, a coalition of merch makers working together to create a sustainable music merch ecosystem, and Jason P. Decoy Deloy shines a light on Synthesizer, the brand new album from one of the wildest bands we've ever seen: A Place to Bury Strangers. For their 7th album, A Place to Bury Strangers decided to pull out all the stops: the 12” vinyl LP is packaged in a cover that can be assembled into a noise synthesizer. That's right, the vinyl is packaged in a circuit board cover. It's exactly what you'd expect from band leader Oliver Ackermann, because when he's not rocking with the band, he's hard at work at Death By Audio, makers of some of the most gnarly effects pedals ever assembled. We caught up with Oliver to learn more about what inspired this insane idea. You can pre-order your copy of Synthesizer NOW from Hello—it's out October 10th via Dedstrange. Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Then Comes Silence was founded by Alex Svenson in 2012, originally inspired by frequent touring with A Place To Bury Strangers and an attraction to horror and the occult. Today he is joined by drummer Jonas Fransson and Hugo Zombie (Los Carniceros del Norte) on guitar. They released their seventh album called Trickery on Metropolis Records. Recorded by Jörgen Wall (Jay-Jay Johanson, The Hellacopters) over three days at Stockholm's Kapsylen Studio and mixed by Tom van Heesch (Rammstein, Apocalyptica, Backyard Babies), this album was mastered by Svante Forsbäck / Chartmakers (Rammstein, Amaranthe, Ville Valo, The Rasmus, Apocalyptica).According to the band, this album celebrates friendship, unity and the feeling of belonging to a group, a tribe. Being a part of what most people would call the goth and post- punk community is, according to the band, a great privilege. Of course, there are dark sides to everything, but after being on the road and meeting people from the music scene for so many years, the band have experienced a caring and welcoming community. Then Comes Silence has toured and played live with The Fields of the Nephilim, The Chameleons, A Place To Bury Strangers, The Bellwether Syndicate and Vision Video, as well as performing at Wave Gotik Treffen, M'era Luna, Amphi Festival, Castle Party and W-Festival. and .... Often cited as ‘ the loudest band in New York', APTBS is known for their vicious live performances overloaded with all-consuming visuals, experimental sonic warfare, and treacherous stage destruction. On record, it is pop hooks layered with the sounds of broken machinery and syrup. https://www.aplacetoburystrangers.com/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/3kx1S2P2Qq3a9bG4DGsAjR https://music.apple.com/us/artist/a-place-to-bury-strangers/264350175 https://www.instagram.com/aptbs/ Melt Downer Straight from Austria's underground, Melt Downer blend heavy psych rock with dub, post hardcore and noise rock. This week features the second interview in a two-part series with Daniel Ash and David J., lyricists and songwriters behind Love and Rockets, Bauhaus, and multiple other band and solo projects. I interviewed Daniel and David separately, with a similar set of questions. The success of their projects can be attributed, in part, to their distinctly different approaches to writing lyrics and crafting songs. Today's episode features David J. I spoke with Daniel and David while they were preparing for Love and Rocket's first US tour in fifteen years. Named after the underground comic by the Hernandez brothers, Love and Rockets announced themselves to the world with their radically unique take on the classic Temptations song “Ball Of Confusion.” This debut proved that they were going to be a force to contend with. It became a huge seller and a popular club hit in the US and Canada, where it also went gold. The legacy of the band has only grown with more people realizing the extent of their influence and generations of new fans discovering them. The list of artists who cite their influence is impressive: The Flaming Lips, The Dandy Warhols, A Place To Bury Strangers, Jane's Addiction, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Beck, Maynard Keenan, Dubfire, the Pixies and many more. As a bonus, David agreed to share lyrics from an upcoming project. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/viewlesswings/support

IDLES are a British rock band formed in Bristol in 2009. The band consists of Joe Talbot (vocals), Mark Bowen (guitar), Lee Kiernan (guitar), Adam Devonshire (bass) and Jon Beavis (drums). A self-proclaimed 'angry band' from Bristol in Southwest England, IDLES take the fury of punk rock and wed it to a muscular but moody instrumental attack that matches the literate, purposeful menace of their lyrics. Lead singer and lyricist Joe Talbot's full-bodied ranting, in which he offers his vehement opinions on the state of British culture and his own personal issues, is matched by the rich, angular blast of the musicians, who can swing from melodic to brutally hard at a moment's notice. In this episode all songs selected by IDLES as guests for Australian TV show Rage, on Saturday June 8, 2019. Lineup: Crows, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Grinderman, The Stooges, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Heavy Lungs, Spiritualized, Queens of the Stone Age, LCD Soundsystem, Grimes, Fuck Buttons, BAMBARA, Parquet Courts, Preoccupations, Gilla Band, Death Grips, Tyler, The Creator, Pusha T, Ginuwine, Velcro Hooks, Turbowolf, Pulled Apart By Horses, Cold War Kids, LIFE, Death From Above 1979, Foals, The Futureheads, Archie Bronson Outfit, Spring King, Fontaines D.C., Metz, The Walkmen, LICE, SOFT PLAY, A Place To Bury Strangers, Beak, Death In Vegas, Arab Strap, SUUNS, TV On The Radio, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Spectres, Mogwai, Q Lazzarus, IDLES, Fugazi, DEN, Future Islands, Iggy Pop, Talking Heads, Tears For Fears, The Cure, The National, Einstürzende Neubauten, To Rococo Rot

I'm really excited for this episode. I'm joined by independent music renaissance man, Oliver Ackermann. He studied industrial design at Rhode Island School of Design, founded the bands Skywave and A Place To Bury Strangers, began the effects company Death By Audio, as well as a performance space of the same name. He's also founded two record labels, the latest being DedStrange. The whole story begins in Fredericksburg, VA. Oliver talks about growing up and what influenced him. He talks about times when the name A Place To Bury Strangers gets awkward as well as the trip that started Death By Audio Effects. Oliver tells how U2's The Edge became a customer. He also discusses how one review in one publication changed EVERYTHING for the band. But this isn't just a history lesson on A Place To Bury Strangers & Death By Audio. Oliver explains how he decided to embrace the dumb ideas instead of doing things the same way everyone else does and how having many different songwriting processes helps him and the band come up with a variety of ideas. And Oliver and I agree on the importance of seeing, experiencing, & supporting independent bands and musicians live. So check out the latest album by A Place To Bury Strangers, See Through You, on DedStrange Records. Check out Death By Audio's effects pedals. Follow them both on social media. They're pretty easy to find. Follow us @PerformanceAnx there, as well. Support us with a merch purchase at performanceanx.threadless.com.
