This is the Band Shirt Day Podcast. In this episode, Dylan Gette King and Jason P. Woodbury share band shirt stories from Oliver Ackermann of A Place to Bury Strangers who describes the torn and frayed charm of his favorite Minor Threat shirt, pilfered from his older brother. And then Jess Abbott of Tancred takes us on a guided tour of some of her favorite band shirts, including a killer Taco Bell/Limp Bizkit bootleg, a Shania Twain tee, and her favorite shirt from her wife, Jenny Owen Youngs. On one hand, a band shirt is a simple everyday item, the kind of thing you might take for granted. But when you start thinking about it, the topic encompasses so much more: band shirts help us tell stories about ourselves and what music means to us. And that's why we're here: to think a little more about band shirts and the holiday invented to celebrate them, Band Shirt Day, a global fundraising initiative uniting artists, fans, and the music industry at large on Friday, September 20th.Artists like Portugal. The Man, Wilco, The Revivalists, The Format, K.Flay, Cherry Glazerr, Geese, and Warren G, along with many more confirmed to participate through the Band Shirt Day. Wanna sign up as an artist for fan? Decoy Deloy shines a light on Synthesizer, the brand new album from one of the wildest bands we've ever seen: A Place to Bury Strangers. For their 7th album, A Place to Bury Strangers decided to pull out all the stops: the 12” vinyl LP is packaged in a cover that can be assembled into a noise synthesizer. That's right, the vinyl is packaged in a circuit board cover. It's exactly what you'd expect from band leader Oliver Ackermann, because when he's not rocking with the band, he's hard at work at Death By Audio, makers of some of the most gnarly effects pedals ever assembled. We caught up with Oliver to learn more about what inspired this insane idea.  You can pre-order your copy of Synthesizer NOW from Hello—it's out October 10th via Dedstrange. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. On Versions, Queralt and Smith's four tracks have been reimagined by Nandele, Flug 8, GLOK (Steve's RIDE bandmate Andy Bell) and Nina Walsh, kindred spirits and treasured members of the extended Bytes/Ransom Note family. And so I walk along the beach, turning my back on a world that's stopped making sense, and the feeling that maybe sense is the first thing to go; before our civilisation falls, it will stumble through a long delirium, like an old man with Alzheimer's, before it finally grinds to a halt … I'm trying to turn my back on all that, before me the great unknown, the poetry of the magnificent blue distance … to gaze out at the blue and open myself up to that which is beyond us, to let the blue beyond wash all that away like pebbles in its foam … Bytes is proud to announce Sun Moon Town Versions, a companion piece to last year's EP, on which Steve Queralt, bass player of pioneering shoegazers RIDE, joined forces with the writer and film-maker MIchael Smith for a stunning four-track EP featuring Steve's music and Michael's spoken-word musings. On Versions, the four tracks have been reimagined by Nandele, Flug 8, GLOK (Steve's RIDE bandmate Andy Bell) and Nina Walsh, kindred spirits and treasured members of the extended Bytes/Ransom Note family. Premiering here is the GLOK remix, continuing Andy's hot streak under his electronic alter-ego, which has seen him deliver stunning remixes for Dot Allison, Maps and A Place to Bury Strangers. For his rework of ‘Chaldean Oracle', Andy eschews Michael's vocal almost entirely, transforming the track into a Detroit dub-techno monster that has echoes of Bandulu and Carl Craig in its shimmering melodies, eerie distortion and pounding drums. As well as these four new remixes, due to popular demand the release also features instrumental versions of the original tracks, with fans keen to hear Steve's exceptional electronic soundscapes in isolation. It's out on July 21, available digitally and a limited edition cassette, only available from Bytes Bandcamp. I'm really excited for this episode. I'm joined by independent music renaissance man, Oliver Ackermann. He studied industrial design at Rhode Island School of Design, founded the bands Skywave and A Place To Bury Strangers, began the effects company Death By Audio, as well as a performance space of the same name. He's also founded two record labels, the latest being DedStrange. The whole story begins in Fredericksburg, VA. Oliver talks about growing up and what influenced him. He talks about times when the name A Place To Bury Strangers gets awkward as well as the trip that started Death By Audio Effects. Oliver tells how U2's The Edge became a customer. He also discusses how one review in one publication changed EVERYTHING for the band.  But this isn't just a history lesson on A Place To Bury Strangers & Death By Audio. Oliver explains how he decided to embrace the dumb ideas instead of doing things the same way everyone else does and how having many different songwriting processes helps him and the band come up with a variety of ideas. And Oliver and I agree on the importance of seeing, experiencing, & supporting independent bands and musicians live. So check out the latest album by A Place To Bury Strangers, See Through You, on DedStrange Records. Check out Death By Audio's effects pedals. Follow them both on social media. They're pretty easy to find. Follow us @PerformanceAnx there, as well. Support us with a merch purchase at performanceanx.threadless.com. You can send us a cup of coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. And remember, just like our guest Oliver Ackermann, support independent artists whenever you can. The 7-inch record isn't just a format—it's an art form. On each episode of The Spindle podcast, music writer Marc Masters and music historian (and music maker) John Howard dive into a great 7-inch, dissecting its background, impact, and the reasons why it stands out as a small plastic piece of music history.  This week, the duo digs into the 1988 single by Mudhoney, "Touch Me I'm Sick" b/w "Touch Me I'm Sick." Emerging from the ashes of Green River and led by Mark Arm, Mudhoney would go on to be a huge part of Sub Pop Records history, and this gnarly anthem has more than stood the test of time. This week on The Spindle, Mark and John dig in. They're diseased, but we don't mind.Announcement: Rough Trade is teaming up with Hello Merch to bring exclusive clothing and accessories to Rough Trade's New York location at 30 Rockefeller Plaza on June 30th in Brooklyn. This is WASTOIDS With and we're hanging with a voice that should be familiar to listeners, Marc Masters, co-host of The Spindle podcast. Every two weeks, he and his partner John Howard discuss a single 7” record here on WASTOIDS. So far, they've covered 45s by Flipper, Pavement, Superchunk, and Hüsker Dü. Marc's also a musician—he and John played in a group called The Plums—as well as one of our favorite music writers, whose work can be read Pitchfork, Bandcamp, NPR, The Washington Post, and The Wire. His 2007 book No Wave is sadly out of print, but commands high dollar prices on the secondary market, and he's hard at work on a book about the history of cassettes, which we discuss here today on WASTOIDS With…Marc Masters. This week's episode features original music by Sam Means, plus selections from The Plums and Nice Breeze. The Spindle airs every other week here on the WASTOIDS frequency. A new episode featuring Mudhoney will drop this Thursday, June 23rd, so be sure to hit subscribe so you never miss a WASTOIDS podcast.
