In this first part of a two-part episode, we look at the variety of ways that John Williams creates the musical world of Harry Potter. From school songs to Quidditch, from dragons to goblins, from ghosts to moving staircases, John Williams combines the rich late-romantic orchestral sound with the slightly odd notes resembling 20th century composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev to create a world that seems both familiar and different. He also expands in the second and third film from celeste and choir to adding instruments from the Baroque and Renaissance, combining new sounds with old. This episode focuses solely on the first three movies composed by John Williams.Host: Ruth MudgeMusic included in podcast:"The Arrival of Baby Harry" - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams, 2001"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" - The Sorcerer's Apprentice, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic & James Levine, music by Paul Dukas, 1987"Diagon Alley/The Gringotts Vault" - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams, 2001"Act 1, Scene III, The Street Awakens" - Romeo & Juliet, Op. 64, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra & Valery Gergiev, music by Sergei Prokofiev, 2010"Platform Nine-and-three-quarters/The Journey to Hogwarts" - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams, 2001"Hogwarts Forever!/The Moving Stairs" - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams, 2001"Entry into the Great Hall/The Banquet" - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams, 2001"The Quidditch Match" - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams, 2001"Christmas at Hogwarts" - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams, 2001"Olympic Fanfare and Theme" - Celebrating John Williams (Live at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles 2019), performed by Los Angeles Philharmonic & Gustavo Dudamel, music by John Williams, 2019"The Norwegian Ridgeback/A Change of Seasons" - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams, 2001"Fawkes is Reborn" - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams & William Ross, 2002"Dueling the Basilisk" - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams & William Ross, 2002"Meeting Aragog" - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams & William Ross, 2002"Moaning Myrtle" - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams & William Ross, 2002"Knockturn Alley" - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by John Williams & William Ross, 2002"Pavana la Bataglia (Crumhorns & Ensemble)" - Dictionary of Medieval & Renaissance Instruments, performed by Christian Mendoza & Orchestra Antiqua Musica, music by Anonymous, 2002"Double Trouble" - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, music by John Williams, 2004"Secrets of the Castle" - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, music by John Williams, 2004"The Portrait Gallery" - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, music by John Williams, 2004"Quidditch, Third Year" - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, music by John Williams, 2004"Apparition on the...
Foundations of Amateur Radio One of the many acronyms that define the world of amateur radio is VFO. It stands for Variable Frequency Oscillator. That doesn't explain much if you're not familiar with the purpose of it and just how special this aspect of amateur radio is. Much of the world of radio beyond our hobby, like broadcast television, WiFi and Citizen Band or CB, to name a few, uses radio spectrum in a particular way. On a television you change channels to switch between stations. Similarly, a WiFi network uses specific channels to make your wireless network a reality and the same goes for CB, different channels to make yourself heard. Looking specifically at CB for a moment, if you look at channel 8 for example, depending on which type of equipment you have, your radio might be using 27.055 MHz, or 476.575 MHz, or 476.6 MHz. Each of those frequencies can be described as CB channel 8. The first is on the 27 MHz or 11m band, the second is if you're using a 40 channel radio, which is now depreciated and the third is if you're using an 80 channel radio. If you look at digital broadcast television, channel 8 is on 191.5 MHz. On WiFi, channel 8 is on 2.447 GHz or 5.040 GHz. You get the point, depending on where you are as a user of radio spectrum, channel 8 might mean a whole host of different things and as I've described with CB radio, that might even change over time. Harry Potter needed magic to reach Platform Nine and Three-Quarters at Kings Cross Station to get to school. In a channelised world, getting to an in-between frequency is not possible if you're using licensed equipment, unless you're a radio amateur, then you can use magic to get into the gaps. That magic is called the VFO. You might recall that our radios use many different frequencies internally to be able to filter out specifically what signal you want to hear. Most of those frequencies are fixed, in fact in the vast majority of cases these are actually tuned and calibrated to work in a very specific way. The one exception is the VFO, it's by nature variable. It's likely calibrated, but it's not fixed and that allows our community to tune our equipment to any frequency we desire. The traditional user interface for this is a big knob on the front of your radio, colloquially referred to as the dial, as-in turn the dial to change frequency. This allows us something quite rare in radio land. We can be frequency agile. It means that if there's interference at a specific frequency, we can tweak our VFO and slightly modify where our radio is tuned. You use this almost subconsciously when you're on HF trying to tune to a particular station. In the world of software radio there's likely no knob. You type in a number and the variable frequency oscillator in the radio is tuned to another frequency and the output signal, or transmit signal if you're making noise on-air, changes to another frequency. Digital modes like WSPR, which generally use a very specific frequency also vary that frequency but in a different way. You set your radio to the appropriate so-called dial frequency, let's say 28.1246 MHz on the 10m band and then the software alters the signal by up to 200 Hz to change within the available audio range of your radio, altering between a low of 1400 Hz and a high of 1600 Hz, making the actual WSPR frequency on 10m between 28.1260 and 28.1262 MHz. I'm mentioning the WSPR example because while we're frequency agile in our hobby, we do use channels as well. There's a specific set of frequencies set aside, channels if you like, for WSPR, FT8 and other modes. We do the same on the 2m and 70cm bands where we have rules for where repeaters are allowed to be. It means that we get the best of both worlds. We have the stability and institutional knowledge where repeaters or some modes go, but we also get to play in any spot we want. For example, there's nothing stopping me and a friend setting our radio to some random frequency within our license allocation and outside pre-allocated space and run a WSPR transmitter there. Only the two of us will know about it, well at least at first, but it allows us to experiment away from any other users who might experience interference from our tests and exploration. The VFO is what makes our hobby so very interesting and it's what makes it possible to do weird and wonderful experiments. I'm Onno VK6FLAB
In this episode, we look at Hedwig's Theme from the Harry Potter series written by John Williams. We look at the origins being written for the trailer as well as how it is adapted over the course of all 8 films both by John Williams and the other three composers, Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper and Alexandre Desplat. Along these lines, we see how this theme tells the story of Harry, Hogwarts, and owls. In other words, the world of magic. Welcome to September 6th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a sweet breakfast buzz and taking a virtual trip. You've heard the phrase “when in Rome…” but if you can't hop a plane to Italy just now, why not mix things up with a sweet twist on breakfast? Apparently it's perfectly acceptable in Sicily to start the day with coffee flavored gelato tucked inside fresh brioche bread. Uh, yum! Italians also make a dessert called Affogato which means “drowned” and you guessed it, a scoop of ice cream gets drowned in espresso. Coffee ice cream has been around since 1869 and it's been on Howard Johnson's menus, right alongside chocolate and vanilla since the 1960s. On National Coffee Ice Cream Day it's ok to have your buzz for breakfast or dessert! One of the easiest ways to travel the world is to crack open a good book. Take a trip to Middle Earth, fight dragons and save the world from impending doom. Or hop a train at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters to enroll in a school for witches and wizards. And if romance is more your thing, get swept off your feet to the moors of Northern England. Books can take you anywhere and everywhere through the power of your imagination. And reading to your kids is a great way to introduce them to a life-long love of literature. On National Read A Book Day, celebrate by curling up for an hour or two with the perfect way to get away from it all. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. That's really cool of her. So thank you, JKR, and thine is the kingdom! I feel the need to disclaim that certain parts of this chapter are not meant as "bashing". It's not that I have a grudge, the story just writes itself and once you start dropping anvils on a character it's hard to stop. A few reviewers have asked whether the science in this story is real or made up. Yes, it is real, and if you look at my profile, you'll see a link to a certain nonfiction site that will teach you pretty much everything Harry James Potter-Evans-Verres knows and then some. Thank you very much to all my reviewers. (Especially Darkandus on Viridian Dreams, for the surprisingly inspiring comment "Lungs and tea are not meant to interact". "Your dad is almost as awesome as my dad." Petunia Evans-Verres's lips were trembling and her eyes were tearing up as Harry hugged her midsection on Platform Nine of the King's Cross Station. "Are you sure you don't want me to come with you, Harry?" Harry glanced over to his father Michael Verres-Evans, who was looking stereotypically stern-but-proud, and then back to his mother, who really did look rather... uncomposed. "Mum, I know you don't like the wizarding world very much. You don't have to come with. I mean it." Petunia winced. "Harry, you shouldn't worry about me, I'm your mother and if you need someone with you -" "Mum, I'm going to be on my own at Hogwarts for months and months. If I can't manage a train platform alone, better to find out sooner rather than later so we can abort." He lowered his voice to a whisper. "Besides, Mum, they all love me over there. If I have any problems, all I need to do is take off my sweatband," Harry tapped the exercise band covering his scar, "and I'll have way more help than I can handle." "Oh, Harry," Petunia whispered. She knelt down and hugged him hard, face to face, their cheeks resting against each other. Harry could feel her ragged breathing, and then he heard a muffled sob escape. "Oh, Harry, I do love you, always remember that." It's like she's afraid she'll never see me again, the thought popped into Harry's head. He knew the thought was true but he didn't know why Mum was so afraid. So he made a guess. "Mum, you know that I'm not going to turn into your sister just because I'm learning magic, right? I'll do any magic you ask for - if I can, I mean - or if you want me not to use any magic around the house, I'll do that too, I promise I'll never let magic come between us -" A tight hug cut off his words. "You have a good heart," his mother whispered into his ear. "A very good heart, my son." Harry choked up himself a little, then. His mother released him, and stood up. She took a handkerchief out of her handbag, and with a trembling hand dabbed at the running makeup around her eyes. There were no questions about his father accompanying him to the magical side of King's Cross Station. Dad had trouble just looking at Harry's trunk directly. Magic ran in families, and Michael Verres-Evans couldn't even walk. So instead his father just cleared his throat. "Good luck at school, Harry," he said. "Do you think I bought you enough books?" Harry had explained to his father about how he thought this might be his big chance to do something really revolutionary and important, and Professor Verres-Evans had nodded and dumped his extremely busy schedule for two solid days in order to go on the Greatest Secondhand Bookshop Raid Ever, which had covered four cities and produced thirty boxes of science books now sitting in the c...

"You-Know-Who. Hiss hiss hiss," Luna said. She held fingers down from her mouth and swayed like a snake. "This is Loony—" Hermione said, "Luna Lovegood. She created the BOY-WHO-LIVED GETS DRACO MALFOY PREGNANT headline the summer before last. She believes there exists an unobservable Platform Nine and One-Half concealed by powerful magics. She claims you and she adventured together without me." "Do you have any evidence I trusted you before I lost my memory?" Harry asked. Luna glanced at Hermione. "All my secrets are hers as well," Harry said. "I know your real name, that you're a Parselmouth and that you've operated the Mirror of Atlantis," said Luna. "My real name isn't something I'd tell you so you must have worked it out yourself and therefore does not constitute evidence of my trusting you in the past. There are at least three people who know I'm a Parselmouth so it's not surprising the information leaked out. These are the same people who know I've operated the Mirror so the Mirror adds no bits of information. An enemy would be at least as likely as an ally to possess this information," said Harry, "Did we discover an ancient artifact or something?" "We found the Lost Diadem of Ravenclaw together," Luna showed it to him. "This crown proves little since you could easily retcon a story around it. On the other hand, there is information I would tell someone I trusted if I wanted to guarantee recognition in case of obliviation," said Harry, "Do you have the recognition code?" Luna recognized the logic of someone whose priors outweighed the available evidence. She fled the room. The Marauder's Map showed Luna how to climb on top of the Great Hall. She hugged a stone gargoyle at the edge. It guided her tears down into the Hogwarts courtyard. "Not now, Wanda," Luna said, "I need to feel this." Luna detected quiet behind her. She continued staring at the students mingling below. "I do not intend to jump," Luna said. "I do not intend to stop you," Lady Yue said. They listened to the wind. They smelled the gentle scent of trees. "How does one make friends?" Luna asked. "That is Professor Lockhart's field of expertise," Lady Yue said. "Do you have a spell for loneliness?" Luna asked. "今夜鄜州月," Lady Yue sang from her teenage youth, "閨中只独看。遥憐小児女,未解憶長安。香霧雲鬟湿,清輝玉臂寒。何時倚虚幌,双照涙痕乾?" 《月夜》 Moon Night by Du Fu 杜甫 今夜鄜州月, Tonight Fuzhou moon, 闺中只独看。 boudoir inside only alone see. 遥怜小儿女, Distant tenderness small girl, 未解忆长安。 unsolved recall Chang'an. 香雾云鬟湿, Scent fog cloud hair wet, 清辉玉臂寒。 clear splendor jade shoulder cold. 何时倚虚幌, When lean empty window curtain, 双照泪痕干。 both shine tear stains dry. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is Luna Lovegood and the Chamber of Secrets, Part 1: Luna Lovegood and the Chamber of Secrets, published by lsusr. Luna Lovegood walked through the barrier between Platforms Nine and Ten to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. Luna wondered what happened to Platform Nine and One-Half. Numbers like "three quarters" only appear when you divide an integer in half twice in a row. Luna looked around for someone who might know the answer and spied a unicorn. She wore clothes, walked on two feet and had curly brown hair. None of that fooled Luna. The unicorn radiated peace and her fingernails were made out of alicorn. "What happened to Platform Nine and One-Half?" Luna asked the unicorn. "There is no Platform Nine and One-Half," the unicorn replied. "How do you know?" Luna asked. "It would have been in Hogwarts: A History," the unicorn replied, "nor is there mention of a Platform Nine and One-Half in Modern Magical History, Important Modern Magical Discoveries, or any other book in the Hogwarts library. There is only a Platform Nine and Three Quarters." "What about Platform Nine and Seven Eighths?" Luna asked. "There is no Platform Nine and Seven Eights either." The unicorn turned around and walked away before Luna could ask "How do you know?" If Platform Nine and Three Quarters does not appear in Muggle libraries then Platform Nine and One-Half is unlikely to appear in wizard libraries, except for double-witches' libraries. The Hogwarts library is not a double-witch library. "How are you?" a Weasley-headed first-year girl asked Luna. "I'm trying to find Platform Nine and One-Half. The unicorn told me it doesn't exist. If it does exist then it must be hidden by powerful magics. How are you?" said Luna. "What unicorn?" the first-year girl asked. "That one, right there," Luna said, pointing. The girl invented an excuse to end the conversation. Luna didn't know how to make friends. She had a vague idea that as a first-year, the Hogwarts Express was a one-time opportunity to do so. She wore a necklace she had painted herself which nobody else seemed to notice. She had brought kettle of home-brewed Comed-Tea, but it had got her jeered out of a compartment. Nobody was interested in the troll she had smelled at Platform Nine and Three Quarters or her discovery of a lich in the second year or that the Chamber of Secrets had been opened or any of Dark Lord Harry Potter's various plots. The other first-years seemed unfocused and confused. Confused.. Wrackspurts are invisible creatures that float into your ears and make your brain go fuzzy. The train could be full of them. They could be floating into her ears right now. Luna stuck her index fingers in her ears to block the possible Wrackspurts. The first-years in the nearby compartment looked at Luna as if she were already unpopular. Wrackspurts are cognitohazardous which means they mess with your thoughts. Luna learned all about Wrackspurts and other cognitohazards in her work on The Quibbler. The most important thing about cognitohazards is to check yourself regularly and figure out if you've already been affected by one. Luna observed her own mind. Fuzzy? No. Unfocused? No. Confused? No. Wrackspurts had not yet entered her brain. (Unless it already had and was inhibiting her meta-cognition—but she didn't think that was happening.) Luna observed the other students. Maybe they were infected by Wrackspurts or maybe they were behaving normally. It was hard to tell without a Wrackspurt-free baseline to compare them to. Before she could unplug her ears, Luna had to figure out if there were Wrackspurts roaming the train. But Wrackspurts are invisible. How can she test whether such a thing exists? Wrackspurts are attracted to people so the safest place to go would be an empty compartment. Smaller would be better since that would decrease the like...

This is Luna Lovegood and the Chamber of Secrets, Part 7: Luna Lovegood and the Chamber of Secrets, published by lsusr. They were in the hospital wing. "Who are you?" Harry Potter said to Luna. This is Luna Lovegood and the Chamber of Secrets, Part 12: Luna Lovegood and the Chamber of Secrets, published by lsusr. "Stupefy," Professor Lockhart said. Lord Voldemort spat a verbal non-somatic counterspell. He dodged too, just in case. "Do not do that again," said Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort cast another non-somatic spell. Animated skeleton hands grew from his wrists. He picked up Harry Potter's wand. "Take a look at this map," Luna said, "Do you see this nargle? It will hunt you forever unless we work together to stop it." Lord Voldemort's Legilimency tore through Luna's mind. "It is almost here," said Professor Lockhart. "Place your hands on my astrolabe," Luna said. "Rennervate the boy to awaken after we leave," said Lord Voldemort to Professor Lockhart. Headmistress Minerva McGonagall, Chief Warlock Amelia Bones and Auror Mad-Eye Moody burst into Harry Potter's office. "What did you do this time?" said Auror Moody. "Nothing," said Harry James Potter-Evans-Verres. "Uh-huh," said Headmistress McGonagall. The Forgotten Library was a regular heptagon centered around a giant Pensieve. Seven giant shelves radiated toward the corners. The shelves held brown tattered diaries, vials of silvery memories and endless stacks of stationary. Six desks were interlaced in six aisles between the seven shelves. The seventh aisle led to the entrance. Each desk was covered in parchment covered in Luna's handwriting. A flowchart on the far left desk said START HERE in giant letters. Luna checked the Marauder's Map. The nargle moved faster than it had before. According to Luna's notes, they had all three components of the ritual: the Sword of Gryffindor, the secrets of Slytherin and the Diadem of Ravenclaw. Lockhart wielded the sword. Lord Voldemort wielded the secrets. Luna placed Ravenclaw's Diadem on her head. The diadem forced Luna's thoughts into coherence. There was an epic battle. The vials had been smashed. The diaries had been burned. Something was missing. Ravenclaw's horcrux continued to overwrite the Luna personality. Not yet. Luna had unanswered questions. The power of Gryffindor. What had destroyed Atlantis? The intellect of Ravenclaw. Where was Platform Nine and One Half? The secrets of Slytherin. What had happened to the third cauldron? The sacrifice of Hufflepuff. Luna wondered where the Wrackspurt could have come from. It had to have been there before she shut the door. But the Wrackspurt had not immediately entered Luna's ears when she had first entered the compartment. There may not have been any free Wrackspurts in the compartment when Luna had entered it. Luna's trapped Wrackspurt must have been in someone else's ear. But who? Luna's eyes slid from one end of her compartment to the other, as if nothing important existed in-between. Luna never met Kirito on the train. He wasn't sorted into Hufflepuff. He didn't nudge her into exploring the kitchens. He didn't place a blanket over her the night she slept outside the Ravenclaw Common Room. He never founded Smite Club. He never joined Lockhart's dueling club. He didn't sacrifice himself to defeat the nargle. Kirito had never existed. Where do vanished objects go? Atlantis had never existed. Platform Nine and one Half had never existed. There had never been a third cauldron. Why had Luna never worn shoes? Luna yanked the diadem off her head. "We just have one more loose end to tie up," said Professor Lockhart. The Sword of Gryffindor cut through Lord Voldemort's wards, counterspells and skull. Lord Voldemort died. Professor Quirrell revived. Professor Quirrell opened a portal to Hell underneath Professor Lockhart. The Sword of Gryffindor clattered to the floor. "Is there a self-interested reason why I ought not to kill you too before I leave this room?" said Professor Quirrell to Luna. Thanks for listening. To help us o...
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Luna Lovegood and the Chamber of Secrets - Part 1, published by lsusr on the LessWrong. What's Your Favorite Way To Spend Labor Day? Welcome to September 6th, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate taking a virtual trip and a job well done. Since 1882 we have honored the folks who labored to build the backbone of our country. These roads, buildings and infrastructure have supported us ever since our nation began. And while Americans are generally considered to be hard working, this day is all about relaxing with family and friends as we recognize the official end of Summer. If you're headed back to school, you still have time for one more adventure. Why not take a road trip to admire some of that original handiwork? The monuments and highways that were proudly built by our ancestors still hold breathtaking views. Whatever you get up to on Labor Day, remember the tradition of patting yourself on the back for a job well done while you kick back with those you love. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.

Partly it's our enthusiasm and motivation at the first flush of hope and desire, and partly we've chosen this time to start because it's particularly convenient or easy. But the universe will test our resolve not too long after that. It can feel like slamming into a brick wall at the end of a runway.

Hello everyone! Happy Halloween! Today, I will discuss the sixth chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Also, there are some elements of Halloween in this episode. Hope y'all enjoy it and stay safe!
Turn to Page 88, The Journey from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. Today’s lesson is called The Baggage We Carry. The chapter starts with Harry preparing to head to Hogwarts. His family drops him off at King’s Cross Station, and Harry struggles to find Platform 9 ¾, until a kind woman with wizard children of her own guides him. Two of her children help Harry load his stuff onto the train, and discover he is the famous Harry Potter. On the train, their younger brother, Ron Weasley, confirms this with Harry before they bond over wizarding treats. Neville comes by looking for his toad, before Hermione stops in while helping Neville to witness Ron cast a dud spell. Finally, Draco Malfoy and his two friends show up to harass Harry and Ron. The train eventually arrives at its destination, and Harry first sees Hogwarts castle. Music: Magical Dirt by Sir Cubworth #MagicalTheory #podcast #HarryPotter #BackToHogwarts ✨Like the podcast? This episode features a discussion of chapter 6 of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, entitled 'The Journey from Platform Nine and Three Quarters'. We talk train etiquette, Weasley family values and wizarding baked goods, with an installment of Hogwarts Kitchen all about pumpkin pasties.Speaking of pumpkin pasties, here is my very basic and easy recipe for them:Ingredients:ready rolled shortcrust pastrysome amount of fresh pumpkin, ideally one that cooks down soft, like Hokkaido, skinned and chopped into small cubesone onion, finely choppedbutter or oilsaltpepperoptional seasonings such as rosemary, thyme or paprikaoptional egg for eggwashing the pastiesMethod:1. Sautee the chopped onion in butter or oil over a low hear2. When the onion is translucent, add the chopped pumpkin as well as salt, pepper and seasoning3. Cook, covered, stirring occasionally, over low heat until pumpkin pieces are soft and slightly caramelised4. While the filling cools down, prepare the pastry by cutting the pastry sheet into large oval shapes5. Place a dollop of filling in the centre of the pastry oval, then fold over until the long sides overlap. Use fingers to create a crimped edge, making sure the pasty is perfectly sealed. 6. Optionally, brush the surface of the pasty with beaten egg6. Bake at 190°C until pastry is golden brown (around 40 minutes)
We're diving back into the Dickensian world this week, looking at Chapter 6: The Journey from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters in parallel with Chapter 22 of Great Expectations. This week we consider what it means to have "great expectations". We also take a look at Ron and Harry's budding friendship and talk about the importance of kindness and compassion. Paul is affronted by the idea that Scabbers is "not what he seems", and also makes a compelling case for why Harry doesn't belong in Slytherin.

This week, Erin and Adri discuss the politics of charity in chapter 6 “The Journey from Platform Nine and Three-quarters” of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. Erin discusses her uncomfortable and complicated feelings around the word “charity,” while Adri reminisces about all those times her mom volunteered her as tribute (seriously, mom, stop offering my work for free). What is charity and through which lenses could charity be seen? Why does the word get such a bad rap? Are the Dursleys charitable people? Are the Weasleys? Is Harry?
