EYE ON NPI - Nexperia Battery Life Booster ICs

This week's EYE ON NPI is going to give you life, we're looking at Nexperia's Battery Life Booster ICs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/battery-life-booster-ics), an interesting solution for dealing with common coin cell batteries as an inexpensive power supply for your small electronic products. The marketing copy for this chip series is pretty eye-catching, with copy that they are "designed to extend the life of a typical lithium coin cell battery by up to an order of magnitude (10x) while also increasing its peak output current capability by up to 25x" (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/battery-life-booster-ics) Quite a claim! So let's take a look at what this chip can really do, and why we need it to help with our coin battery-powered designs. Primary Lithium LiMnO2 coin batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/battery-products/batteries-non-rechargeable-primary/lithium-manganese-dioxide/90) are hard to beat when you want ultra-dense, low-cost power that is very small. They are the smallest form factor of user-serviceable battery. And the power density of coins - plus their flat shape - makes them great for wearable devices, medical sensors or hearing aids, wireless nodes, anything that is smaller than a finger. With a nominal voltage of 3VDC, and 280 Wh/kg density, they are more dense than a AA alkaline. LiSOCl2 batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/battery-products/batteries-non-rechargeable-primary/lithium-thionyl-chloride/90?s=N4IgjCBcoCxgTFUBjKAzAhgGwM4FMAaEAeygG0QBmANgFZKEQBdIgBwBcoQBldgJwCWAOwDmIAL6SgA) are even more dense, with 3.6V nominal and 500 Wh/kg - twice the density of LiMnO2 or Alkaline. Both are non-rechargeable batteries, and while fairly inexpensive when bought in bulk, they can add up in cost when buying from a grocery store, so making sure that they last a long time is essential for a good customer experience. The Energizer Lithium Coin Handbook and Application Manual (https://data.energizer.com/pdfs/lithiumcoin_appman.pdf) is chock full of good advice for folks who want to use a CR2032 or similar coin battery to power their products. It's written with engineers in mind, so a lot of the document covers how the nominal voltage and current, 3V and 240mAh, are deeply affected by shelf life, internal resistance, temperature, and pulse effects. The biggest downside you will see on coin batteries is their relatively high internal resistance - IR. Whereas alkaline and LiPoly batteries have internal resistance well below 1 ohm, the IR of a CR2032 is 9 ohms. So say you want to draw 100mA from a CR2032, even if just for a few millisecs - that 0.1 A turns into a .9V drop across the IR which means what you thought was a 3V power supply is now 2V - too low for your microcontroller or radio to run. Since the power lost across the IR is 2*I*R and R is fixed, it's doubly important that you keep that I low, so that you can minimize IR loss and use as much of that 700mWh stored energy. In our 100mA example, 30% of the battery energy is lost to resistor heat dissipation! That's where Nexperia's Battery Life Booster ICs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/battery-life-booster-ics) come in. They are designed to be used with products that don't need continuous battery drain, that is they have a very low duty cycle where the user presses a button a few times a day or maybe the sensor node transmits only once a minute. During that short transmit or usage cycle, a radio or LCD display may need up to 200mA but its for a very small amount of time and the voltage needs to be stable. The NBM family of chips do this by slowly sipping a small amount of current from the battery, keeping that I low so that the 2*I*R power loss is minimized, then use that constant current to boost a voltage onto a large storage capacitor. The capacitor is chosen to have high capacitance and high voltage for a large total Joule storage capacity. All four variants of the Nexperia NBM family, NBM7100A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nexperia-usa-inc/NBM7100ABQX/19109915), NBM5100A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nexperia-usa-inc/NBM5100ABQX/19109703), NBM7100B (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nexperia-usa-inc/NBM7100BBQX/19110140) and NBM5100B (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nexperia-usa-inc/NBM5100BBQX/19109874) are in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment! Order today to pick up these chips that will pay for themselves in one battery life-cycle by adding a PMIC to your coin-battery powered products, and DigiKey will ship your chips immediately so you can start integrating them by tomorrow afternoon.

This week's EYE ON NPI is a 1040 that is easier than filing out a 1040-EZ (https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-fillable-forms/free-file-fillable-forms-choose-the-right-1040-form), but will still get you a great return on your time investment: it's the NXP i.MX RT1040 Crossover MCU series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nxp-semi/i-mx-rt1040-crossover-mcu) an ultra powerful microcontroller that is designed to make it easy to add high speed processing without a lot of work or excessive BOM costs. The RT1040's ease of usability and implementation stands out when we look at the details, allowing you - yes you! - to have 500 MHz+ Cortex M7 processing on a low cost two layer board, and without a separate PMIC. We're featuring this chip as the big sister to the Metro M7 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4950) that we're also releasing this week, so it's definitely an iMX party here at the 'fruit. The suggested way to program the iMX NXP series is to use NXP's IDE MCUxpresso (https://www.nxp.com/design/software/development-software/mcuxpresso-software-and-tools-:MCUXPRESSO) but you can also just use the NXP SDK with the arm-gcc toolchain in a command line or other IDE (https://developer.arm.com/Tools%20and%20Software/GNU%20Toolchain) If your application plans to use USB, we recommend checking out our TinyUSB implementation which has iMX RT10xx support (https://github.com/hathach/tinyusb) which compiles under arm-gcc as well, and includes many examples that you can build off of. We've also ported our TinyUF2 second-stage USB bootloader that has mass-storage for read-write of the flash memory (https://github.com/adafruit/tinyuf2). These chips are powerful and very integrated, so you don't need separate power management chips - also known as PMIC's - or SRAM but there are some tips and tricks to watch for about pin usage, the built in bootloader, and configuring the DC/DC converter. This handy video from NXP has some good quickstart tips (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpb_mZknqrk) and each chip also has a suite of app notes for hardware implementation (https://www.nxp.com/products/processors-and-microcontrollers/arm-microcontrollers/i-mx-rt-crossover-mcus/i-mx-rt1040-crossover-mcu-with-arm-cortex-m7-core:i.MX-RT1040). There's many chips in the iMX RT family, as you move up and down you'll be trading package size, SRAM, and peripherals, for complexity and price. (https://www.nxp.com/products/processors-and-microcontrollers/arm-microcontrollers/i-mx-rt-crossover-mcus:IMX-RT-SERIES) The RT1040 sits nicely in the middle with 512KB of SRAM (the bigger chips are up to 1 or 2 MB), parallel TFT support, CAN bus, Ethernet, and two flexIO peripherals that can mimic various interfaces. But it doesn't have MIPI support, or a built-in camera interface, or a second USB port. Digi-Key does stock all of the rest if you so wish! (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/result?s=N4IgjCBcoLQCxVAYygMwIYBsDOBTANCAG4B2aWehA9lANogBMADAJxMDsIAuoQA4AuUECAC%2BYoA) The NXP evaluation boards are fully featured and are recommended by NXP to get started (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nxp-usa-inc/MIMXRT1040-EVK/17141404) We tend to develop off the eval boards first, then using the schematics as a guideline for our own designs. While the BGA packaging is intimidating, it's available in two sizes: 9x9 and 11x11 with the same pinout - the smaller one has 0.65mm ball pitch, and the larger one has 0.8mm pitch, which means you can fan-out on a 2-layer PCB (https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/application-note/AN10778.pdf) or get roomy with a 4-layer. Other than a 3.3V power supply, a crystal and some passives, you only need a QSPI flash memory chip - we use the W25Q64 (https://www.digikey.com/short/0jpf8wmf) on our Metro M7 with great success. Best of all, both versions of the NXP iMX RT1040 chips are in stock right now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key! We suggest starting with the larger MIMXRT1042XJM5B (https://www.digikey.com/short/jv9qjdtv) and the RT1040 EVK (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nxp-usa-inc/MIMXRT1040-EVK/17141404) Huzzah, the chip shortage is over - so order today and you'll be blazing along with a Cortex M7 at 500 or 600 MHz by tomorrow afternoon.

This week's EYE ON NPI is a fusion of form and functionality - it's the MF-LSMF Series High-Power PPTC Resettable Fuse collection from Bourns! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bourns/mf-lsmf-series-high-power-pptc-resettable-fuses) These are super-fuses, made of a polymeric material that allows them to be small and thin, but pass large amounts of current, at high bias voltages. With current ranges up to 6A hold (12A trip!) and 33 VDC max voltage, these fuses are burly enough to be used in large LED or motor-driving projects that normally would need a more expensive PMIC or eFuse (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/pmic-current-regulation-management/734) or a non-resettable glass/ceramic fuse. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/fuses/139) PPTC stands for polymetric positive temperature coefficient. PTC means that as the temperature rises around the resistor, the resistance also rises. There are linear kinds of PTC's that can be used for temperature measurement (silistors) but these are ones that have a non-linear rise (switching type). The resistance actually starts dipping slowly and then shoots up after reaching a certain, adjustable, temperature called the Curie point. When current starts flowing through a PTC, the resistance dips a little, and its quite low to start, usually in the milli-ohm range. Once the current increases a certain amount, the wattage through the PTC's resistance (P = V*I = R*I^2) sets the dissipating heat, the temperature rises, and the Curie point is reached. Then the resistance shoots up to 'open' the circuit, essentially disconnecting the two sides of the circuit since the resistance is in the 10's or 100's of Kohms. However, now the current has dropped and so the power dissipation goes down to zero. After a few seconds or minutes, the material cools down past the Curie point and the resistance allows current through again. (This is why, if your USB port or random electronics product stops working, it does work to unplug it, wait a few minutes, and then try again.) Compare this with classic 'wire' fuses with ceramic or glass or thermoplastic bodies, and a thin wire inside. When too much current goes through the fuse wire, it gets hotter and hotter and eventually melts, cutting off the load from the source voltage (https://flickr.com/photos/shardayyy/8028645604/) But it doesn't self 'heal' - it's a one time thing only! Bourns has adjusted the Curie point on each fuse to match a different voltage and current limit, and they can be trusted to quickly trip when the current goes over the rated limitation. PPTC's are inexpensive, easy-to-use, and add quick protection to your products - you may have seen them on many of our own designs such as the Adafruit Metro which as a simple 5V 500mA one (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2488). Now with these wide current and voltage ranges from Bourns, there's no reason not to add one! A wide range of Bourns MF-LSMF Series High-Power PPTC Resettable Fuses (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bourns/mf-lsmf-series-high-power-pptc-resettable-fuses) are in stock now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment. Order today and you can keep your high-power design safe and sound by tomorrow afternoon

EYE ON NPI - Nordic Semiconductor nPM1100 Power Management IC

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2021 10:05

It's getting hot here in New York City, we could use a little help cooling off, and this week's EYE ON NPI an ultra-cool blast of Nordic engineering - the nPM1100! It's the first power management IC from our favorite low-power-wireless company, Nordic Semiconductor. We've featured them on EYE ON NPI before - the Nordic Power Profiler Kit II (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/12/03/eye-on-npi-nordic-power-profiler-kit-ii-eyeonnpi-digikey-nordictweets-digikey-adafruit/) and the nRF53840 microcontroller (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/03/20/eye-on-npi-nordic-semiconductors-nrf5340-bluetooth-eyeonnpi-maximintegrated-digikey/) - and we've been using Nordic BLE chips for quite a while in our Bluefruit line of boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-evaluation-and-development-kits-boards/859?s=N4IgTCBcDaIEYBsCuBTAZgJyQSwC4gF0BfIA) For us Nordic is synonymous with Wireless and Low Power. That's their bag, and if you need something that's BLE and runs on a small battery for a long time, it's probably the product like you're going to use. Even Apple, who have gotten serious into designing their own silicon used the Nordic nRF52 series for the AirTag (https://www.ifixit.com/News/50145/airtag-teardown-part-one-yeah-this-tracks) When you make products that are designed and marketed to be used for low power wireless - like motion trackers, beacons/tags, fitness watches/bracelets, environmental monitor, etc. the power management system becomes less of a independently-run subsection of the electronics design. As we've seen in other EYE ON NPI's, there may be times when you drop the voltage down or raise it up to change quiescent current and RF transmission. A lot of Cortex chips we've seen lately have integrated buck converters that can be enabled/disabled on demand - they have higher quiescent current than LDOs, but may have lower overall run current during high draw. Buck converters also require an inductor, of course, and will have higher noise. Getting long life from battery is very hard, much harder than people think, and requires good firmware, hardware and integration design. Given the creating of the PPK2, it seems obvious to us that a lot of Nordic's time has been spent trying to get their their customers going with the battery performance they need without doing their design for them. A lot of time folks don't understand the way quiescent currents add up to drain batteries. To solve this for Nordic's customers, they've pulled the PMIC's that were historically integrated into the nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52840-QIAA-R7/11200025), nRF5340 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF5340-QKAA-R/13559661) and nRF9160 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-SICA-R/12339212) and super-powered it into the nPM1100 (https://www.digikey.com/short/38n9f9dv) - an all-in-one battery charger, regulator and buck converter. Ultra-small form factor PMIC 2.075 x 2.075 mm WLCSP package 400 mA battery charger Termination voltage: JEITA compliant 4.1 V or 4.2 V selectable Charge current: 20 mA to 400 mA Highly efficient Buck regulator Output voltage: 1.8, 2.1, 2.7 or 3.0 V Current limit: 150 mA output USB compatible input regulator Overvoltage protection Ship mode disables power output Quiescent currents: 800 nA typical, 460 nA in ship mode Drivers for charge and error LEDs -40°C to 85°C operating temperature Things we like - this chip is fully standalone and strapped with resistors or pins so you don't have to configure it over I2C or 1-Wire or anything and two direct LED outputs for instant visible feedback with a bi-color LED. Works with USB but has input protection for higher voltages in case something gets mis-plugged. Three-in-one integration design means you can pick and choose the pieces you want. It's clearly designed for boards that use sporadic power, and has a 'ship mode' to reduce power draw while its in storage/shipment to the customer - many of these devices don't have a true Off button/switch, so before the first use they'll want to be disabled/enabled with soft-switch buttons to wake up. In Nordic's case studies, they were able to up the run time of a wearable health-monitor bracelet by taking advantage of the buck converter to reduce run-time quiescent current. While designed for Nordic wireless chipsets, this PMIC would be well suited to wearable/low-power designs and you know that Nordic takes low power very seriously so this chip will hit the ground running with a tiny chip that does it all. Bare nPM1100 chips (https://www.digikey.com/short/5dwz72j7), as well as the eval boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NPM1100-EK/14310011?s=N4IgTCBcDaIHYAcC2BGFAGdIC6BfIA) are in stock right now for immediate shipment! EYE on NPI: NXP iMX RT106L

Adafruit Industries

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2020 9:47

This week's EYE ON NPI (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nxp-semi/i-mx-rt106l-local-command-voice-solution) looks at a new spin on a familiar favorite! We've chatted before about the IMX RT10xx series of chips from NXP. These 'cross-over' chips are Cortex M7's running at 500 or 600 MHz - that means you get the relative simplicity of a Cortex microcontroller with the speed and power of a microprocessor. Heck, the RT106x's ~3000 CoreMark @ 600 MHz makes it faster for some computations when you compare it to the Raspberry Pi Zero' ~2000 CoreMark (https://www.eembc.org/coremark/view.php?benchmark_seq=2534) - most of that due to the Linux operating system overhead. This chip family recently made its way into CircuitPython (https://circuitpython.org/board/imxrt1060_evk/) as we were super-excited to see such a powerful and low cost chip. OK but back to this week's EYE ON NPI which is a sister-chip, the iMX RT106L (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nxp-semi/i-mx-rt106l-local-command-voice-solution) - an interesting twist to the RT1060 - this chip is licensed to use with a wake-word + voice-activation software stack. It seems like the hardware is the same, and share the same datasheets and reference manuals. So it's more about purchasing hardware that has a licensing cost baked in - this reminds us of when we would purchase MP3 chips that had a 50 cent licensing fee built in. (https://blog.adafruit.com/2017/04/18/is-mp3-now-patent-free-makerbusiness-technicolor/) So, why is this interesting? Well, you've seen the proliferation of voice assistants like Siri, Google Voice and Alexa - they all use a a microcomputer, with a very powerful processor, to record audio and send it to the cloud for processing. Having to build a full computer with operating system to do voice control makes the BoM cost go up - you need a few MB of RAM, plenty of flash, a complex PMIC...what if we could do all of the processing on a really fast microcontroller instead? Like...a 600 MHz M7? Yes! NXP’s MCU-based solution for local voice control leverages the i.MX RT106L crossover MCU, enabling developers to quickly and easily add local voice commands to their products. The ultra-small form-factor, production-ready hardware design comes with fully integrated software that runs on FreeRTOS for quick, out-of-the-box evaluation and proof-of-concept development. This turnkey solution minimizes time-to-market, risk, and development effort, enabling OEMs to easily add voice to their smart home and smart appliance products without the need for Wi-Fi and cloud connectivity while also addressing the privacy concerns of many consumers. There's a few different products in this family. First is the 106L - the L for "Local". (https://www.digikey.com/products/en/integrated-circuits-ics/embedded-microcontrollers/685?k=rt106l) That's internet-less voice command inference. Good for maybe a dozen words. There's a collection of words built-in - for more words you'll have to train up the engine which is a non-trivial task. The Local is great for simple device control and no WiFi is required so its very low power and low cost. Next is the similar 106A, the A is "Alexa", as you may guess it has Amazon Alexa software ready to go to create custom Alexa-connected devices. (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/nxp-usa-inc/MIMXRT106ADVL6A/568-MIMXRT106ADVL6A-ND/10816229) You'll need to use/add WiFi for the cloud backend communication. Digi-Key has a great tutorial/article about the Alexa series and the nitty-gritty detail of how it works over here (https://www.digikey.com/en/articles/quickly-implement-alexa-built-in-iot-designs) Lastly is the 106F where F is for "Face" - yes facial recognition! (https://www.digikey.com/products/en/integrated-circuits-ics/embedded-microcontrollers/685?k=rt106f) This version connects up to a camera and can be used to recognize faces. These are all interesting machine learning demos many of us have seen, and its interesting to see NXP integrate them as software 'add-on's for a very powerful and capable chip. Note that the RT1060 doesn't have hardware ML acceleration or co-processor, so you'll be relying on the speed and power of the microcontroller itself. We think in the next few years we will see similar "AI ready" chips that are even less expensive thanks to a neural-net accelerator. Meanwhile, if you want to explore these powerful chips, you can check out the entire NXP iMX RT series chip collection here on Digi-Key (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nxp-semi/imx-rt-series) And pick up the iMX RT106L eval kit here on Digi-Key (part 568-SLN-LOCAL-IOT-ND ) so you can start playing with local voice recognition: order today and you'll have it tomorrow!
